1 Samuel 11
American Standard Version
1Then NahashH5176 the AmmoniteH5984 cameH5927 up, and encampedH2583 against Jabesh-gilead: and all the menH376 of JabeshH3003 saidH559 unto NahashH5176, MakeH3772 a covenantH1285 with us, and we will serveH5647 thee. 2And NahashH5176 the AmmoniteH5984 saidH559 unto them, On this condition will I makeH7760 it with you, that all your rightH3225 eyesH5869 be putH7760 out; and I will lay it for a reproachH2781 upon all IsraelH3478. 3And the eldersH2205 of JabeshH3003 saidH559 unto him, Give us sevenH7651 days’H3117 respite, that we may sendH7971 messengersH4397 unto all the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478; and then, if there be none to saveH3467 us, we will comeH3318 out to thee. 4Then cameH935 the messengersH4397 to GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586, and spake these wordsH1697 in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971: and all the peopleH5971 liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963, and weptH1058. 5And, behold, SaulH7586 cameH935 following the oxenH1241 out of the fieldH7704; and SaulH7586 saidH559, What aileth the peopleH5971 that they weepH1058? And they told him the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of JabeshH3003.
6And the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 came mightily upon SaulH7586 when he heardH8085 those wordsH1697, and his angerH639 was kindled greatly. 7And he tookH3947 a yoke of oxenH1241, and cutH5408 them in pieces, and sentH7971 them throughout all the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478 by the handH3027 of messengersH4397, sayingH559, Whosoever cometh not forthH3318 after SaulH7586 and after SamuelH8050, so shall it be done unto his oxenH1241. And the dreadH6343 of Jehovah fellH5307 on the peopleH5971, and they cameH3318 out as oneH259 manH376. 8And he numbered them in BezekH966; and the children of IsraelH3478 wereH1961 threeH7969 hundredH3967 thousandH505, and the menH376 of JudahH3063 thirtyH7970 thousandH505. 9And they saidH559 unto the messengersH4397 that cameH935, ThusH3541 shall ye sayH559 unto the menH376 of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, by the timeH4279 the sunH8121 is hot, ye shall have deliveranceH8668. And the messengersH4397 cameH935 and toldH5046 the menH376 of JabeshH3003; and they wereH1961 gladH8055. 10Therefore the menH376 of JabeshH3003 saidH559, To-morrow we will comeH3318 out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth goodH2896 unto you. 11And it wasH1961 so on the morrow, that SaulH7586 putH7760 the peopleH5971 in threeH7969 companiesH7218; and they cameH935 into the midstH8432 of the campH4264 in the morningH1242 watchH821, and smote the Ammonites until the heatH2527 of the dayH3117: and it cameH935 to pass, that they that remainedH7604 wereH1961 scatteredH6327, so that not twoH8147 of them wereH1961 leftH7604 togetherH3162.
12And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, Who is he that saidH559, Shall SaulH7586 reignH4427 over us? bring the menH376, that we may putH5414 them to deathH4191. 13And SaulH7586 saidH559, There shall not a manH376 be putH4191 to deathH4191 this dayH3117; for to-day Jehovah hath wrought deliveranceH8668 in IsraelH3478.
14Then saidH559 SamuelH8050 to the peopleH5971, Come, and let us go to GilgalH1537, and renewH2318 the kingdom there. 15And all the peopleH5971 went to GilgalH1537; and there they madeH8055 SaulH7586 kingH4427 before Jehovah in GilgalH1537; and there they offeredH2076 sacrificesH2077 of peace-offerings before Jehovah; and there SaulH7586 and all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 rejoicedH8055 greatly.
