1 Samuel 4
1And the wordH1697 of SamuelH8050 came to all IsraelH3478.
Now IsraelH3478 wentH3318 out against the PhilistinesH6430 to battleH4421, and encampedH2583 beside Eben-ezer: and the PhilistinesH6430 encampedH2583 in AphekH663. 2And the PhilistinesH6430 put themselves in array against IsraelH3478: and when they joined battleH4421, IsraelH3478 was smitten before the PhilistinesH6430; and they slew of the army in the fieldH7704 about fourH702 thousandH505 menH376. 3And when the peopleH5971 were comeH935 into the campH4264, the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, Wherefore hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the PhilistinesH6430? Let us fetch the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of Jehovah out of ShilohH7887 unto us, that it may comeH935 among us, and saveH3467 us out of the handH3709 of our enemiesH341. 4So the peopleH5971 sentH7971 to ShilohH7887; and they brought from thence the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of Jehovah of hostsH6635, who sitteth above the cherubimH3742: and the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were there with the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of GodH430.
5And when the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of Jehovah cameH935 into the campH4264, all IsraelH3478 shoutedH7321 with a greatH1419 shoutH7321, so that the earthH776 rang again. 6And when the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 the noise of the shoutH8643, they saidH559, What meaneth the noise of this greatH1419 shoutH8643 in the campH4264 of the HebrewsH5680? And they understood that the arkH727 of Jehovah was comeH935 into the campH4264. 7And the PhilistinesH6430 wereH1961 afraidH3372, for they saidH559, GodH430 is comeH935 into the campH4264. And they saidH559, WoeH188 unto us! for there hath not beenH1961 such a thing heretofore. 8WoeH188 unto us! who shall deliverH5337 us out of the handH3027 of these mightyH117 godsH430? these are the godsH430 that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plaguesH4347 in the wildernessH4057. 9BeH1961 strongH2388, and quit yourselves like menH376, O ye PhilistinesH6430, that ye beH1961 not servants unto the HebrewsH5680, as they have beenH1961 to you: quit yourselves like menH376, and fightH3898. 10And the PhilistinesH6430 foughtH3898, and IsraelH3478 wasH1961 smitten, and they fledH5127 every manH376 to his tentH168: and there wasH1961 a veryH3966 greatH1419 slaughterH4347; for there fellH5307 of IsraelH3478 thirtyH7970 thousandH505 footmen. 11And the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947; and the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, were slain.
12And there ranH7323 a manH376 of BenjaminH1144 out of the army, and cameH935 to ShilohH7887 the same dayH3117, with his clothes rent, and with earthH127 upon his headH7218. 13And when he cameH935, lo, EliH5941 wasH1961 sittingH3427 upon his seatH3678 by the wayside watchingH6822; for his heartH3820 trembled for the arkH727 of GodH430. And when the manH376 cameH935 into the cityH5892, and toldH5046 it, all the cityH5892 criedH2199 out. 14And when EliH5941 heardH8085 the noise of the crying, he saidH559, What meaneth the noise of this tumultH1995? And the manH376 hasted, and cameH935 and toldH5046 EliH5941. 15Now EliH5941 was ninetyH8673 and eightH8083 yearsH8141 old; and his eyesH5869 were setH6965, so that he could not seeH7200. 16And the manH376 saidH559 unto EliH5941, I am he that cameH935 out of the army, and I fledH5127 to-day out of the army. And he saidH559, HowH4100 wentH935 the matterH1697, my sonH1121? 17And he that brought the tidings answered and saidH559, IsraelH3478 is fledH5127 before the PhilistinesH6430, and there hath beenH1961 alsoH1571 a greatH1419 slaughterH4046 among the peopleH5971, and thy twoH8147 sonsH1121 alsoH1571, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, are deadH4191, and the arkH727 of GodH430 is takenH3947. 18And it came to pass, when he made mention of the arkH727 of GodH430, that Eli fellH5307 from off his seatH3678 backwardH322 by the side of the gateH8179; and his neck brake, and he diedH4191: for he wasH1961 an oldH2204 manH376, and heavyH3515. And he had judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 fortyH705 yearsH8141.
19And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wifeH802, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heardH8085 the tidings that the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947, and that her father-in-law and her husbandH376 were deadH4191, she bowedH3766 herself and brought forthH3205; for her pains came upon her. 20And about the timeH6256 of her deathH4191 the women that stoodH5324 by her saidH1696 unto her, FearH3372 not; for thou hast broughtH3205 forthH3205 a sonH1121. But she answeredH6030 not, neither did she regard it. 21And she named the child Ichabod, sayingH559, The gloryH3519 is departed from IsraelH3478; because the arkH727 of GodH430 was takenH3947, and because of her father-in-law and her husbandH376. 22And she saidH559, The gloryH3519 is departed from IsraelH3478; for the arkH727 of GodH430 is takenH3947.
