1 Samuel 16
1And Jehovah saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, How long wilt thou mournH56 for SaulH7586, seeingH7200 I have rejectedH3988 him from being kingH4428 over IsraelH3478? fillH4390 thy hornH7161 with oilH8081, and goH7971: I will sendH7971 thee to JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a kingH4428 among his sonsH1121. 2And SamuelH8050 saidH559, HowH349 can I goH935? if SaulH7586 hearH8085 it, he will killH2026 me. And Jehovah saidH559, TakeH3947 a heiferH5697 with thee, and sayH559, I am comeH935 to sacrificeH2076 to Jehovah. 3And callH7121 JesseH3448 to the sacrificeH2077, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anointH4886 unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4And SamuelH8050 did that which Jehovah spake, and cameH935 to Beth-lehem. And the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892 cameH935 to meetH7122 him tremblingH2729, and saidH559, Comest thou peaceably? 5And he saidH559, Peaceably; I am comeH935 to sacrificeH2077 unto Jehovah: sanctifyH6942 yourselves, and comeH935 with me to the sacrificeH2077. And he sanctifiedH6942 JesseH3448 and his sonsH1121, and calledH7121 them to the sacrificeH2077.
6And it cameH935 to pass, when they wereH1961 comeH935, that he lookedH7200 on EliabH446, and saidH559, SurelyH389 Jehovah’s anointedH4899 is before him. 7But Jehovah saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, LookH7200 not on his countenance, or on the heightH6967 of his statureH6967; because I have rejectedH3988 him: for Jehovah seeth not as manH120 seeth; for manH120 looketh on the outward appearanceH4758, but Jehovah looketh on the heartH3824. 8Then JesseH3448 calledH7121 AbinadabH41, and made him passH5674 before SamuelH8050. And he saidH559, Neither hath Jehovah chosenH977 this. 9Then JesseH3448 made ShammahH8048 to passH5674 by. And he saidH559, Neither hath Jehovah chosenH977 this. 10And JesseH3448 made sevenH7651 of his sonsH1121 to passH5674 before SamuelH8050. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, Jehovah hath not chosenH977 these. 11And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, Are hereH6311 all thy children? And he saidH559, There remaineth yetH5750 the youngestH6996, and, behold, he is keeping the sheepH6629. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, SendH7971 and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he comeH935 hither. 12And he sentH7971, and broughtH935 him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautifulH3303 countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah saidH559, AriseH6965, anointH4886 him; for this is he. 13Then SamuelH8050 tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081, and anointedH4886 him in the midstH7130 of his brethren: and the SpiritH7307 of Jehovah came mightily upon DavidH1732 from that dayH3117 forward. So SamuelH8050 roseH6965 up, and went to RamahH7414.
14Now the SpiritH7307 of Jehovah departedH5493 from SaulH7586, and an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from Jehovah troubled him. 15And Saul’s servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, Behold now, an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 troubleth thee. 16Let our lordH113 now command thy servantsH5650, that are before thee, to seekH1245 out a manH376 who is a skilful player on the harpH3658: and it shall come to pass, when the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 is upon thee, that he shall playH5059 with his handH3027, and thou shalt beH1961 wellH2895. 17And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, Provide me now a manH376 that can playH5059 wellH3190, and bringH935 him to me. 18Then answered oneH259 of the youngH5288 menH376, and saidH559, Behold, I have seenH7200 a sonH1121 of JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playingH5059, and a mightyH1368 manH376 of valor, and a manH376 of warH4421, and prudent in speech, and a comely personH376; and Jehovah is with him. 19Wherefore SaulH7586 sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto JesseH3448, and saidH559, SendH7971 me DavidH1732 thy sonH1121, who is with the sheepH6629. 20And JesseH3448 tookH3947 an ass laden with breadH3899, and a bottle of wineH3196, and a kid, and sentH7971 them by DavidH1732 his sonH1121 unto SaulH7586. 21And DavidH1732 cameH935 to SaulH7586, and stoodH5975 before him: and he lovedH157 him greatly; and he becameH1961 his armorbearer. 22And SaulH7586 sentH7971 to JesseH3448, sayingH559, Let DavidH1732, I pray thee, standH5975 before me; for he hath foundH4672 favorH2580 in my sight. 23And it came to pass, when the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 wasH1961 upon SaulH7586, that DavidH1732 tookH3947 the harpH3658, and playedH5059 with his handH3027: so SaulH7586 wasH1961 refreshed, and wasH1961 wellH2895, and the evilH7451 spiritH7307 departedH5493 from him.
