1 Samuel 2

Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving

1Then HannahH2584 1prayedH6419 and saidH559, “My heartH3820 exultsH5970 in the LordH3068; 2My 3hornH7161 is exaltedH7311 in the LordH3068, My mouthH6310 4speaksH7337 boldlyH7337 againstH5921 my enemiesH340, BecauseH3588 5I rejoiceH8055 in Your salvationH3444.26ThereH369 is noH369 oneH369 holyH6918 like the LordH3068, IndeedH3588, 7thereH369 is noH369 oneH369 besidesH1115 You, 8NorH369 is thereH369 any rockH6697 like our GodH430.39BoastH1696H7235 noH408 moreH7235 so veryH1364 proudlyH1364, 10Do not let arroganceH6277 comeH3318 out of your mouthH6310; 11For the LordH3068 is a GodH410 of knowledgeH1844, 12And with Him actionsH5949 are weighedH8505.413The bowsH7198 of the mightyH1368 are shatteredH2844, 14But the feebleH3782 girdH247 on strengthH2428.5Those who were fullH7649 hireH7936 themselves out for breadH3899, But those who were hungryH7457 ceaseH2308 to hunger. 15EvenH5704 the barrenH6135 givesH3205 birthH3205 to sevenH7651, But 16she who has manyH7227 childrenH1121 languishesH535.617The LordH3068 killsH4191 and makesH2421 aliveH2421; 18He bringsH3381 downH3381 to 19SheolH7585 and raisesH5927 up.720The LordH3068 makesH3423 poorH3423 and richH6238; 21He bringsH8213 lowH8213, He alsoH637 exaltsH7311.822He raisesH6965 the poorH1800 from the dustH6083, 23He liftsH7311 the needyH34 from the ashH830 heapH6083 24To make them sitH3427 with noblesH5081, And inheritH5157 a seatH3678 of honorH3519; 25For the pillarsH4690 of the earthH776 are the Lord’sH3068, And He setH7896 the worldH8398 on them.926He keepsH8104 the feetH7272 of His godlyH2623 onesH2623, 27But the wickedH7563 onesH7563 are silencedH1826 in darknessH2822; 28For not by mightH3581 shall a manH376 prevailH1396.1029Those who contendH7378 with the LordH3068 will be shatteredH2865; 30AgainstH5921 them He will thunderH7481 in the heavensH8064, 31The LordH3068 will judgeH1777 the endsH657 of the earthH776; 32And He will giveH5414 strengthH5797 to His kingH4428, 33And will exaltH7311 the 34hornH7161 of His anointedH4899.”

11Then ElkanahH511 wentH1980 to his homeH1004 at 35RamahH7414. 36But the boyH5288 ministeredH8334 to the LordH3068 beforeH6440 EliH5941 the priestH3548.

The Sin of Eli’s Sons

12Now the sonsH1121 of EliH5941 were 3738worthlessH1100 menH1121; they did not knowH3045 the LordH3068 1339and the customH4941 of the priestsH3548 with the peopleH5971. When anyH3605 manH376 was offeringH2076 a sacrificeH2077, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 would comeH935 while the meatH1320 was boilingH1310, with a three-prongedH7969H8127 forkH4207 in his handH3027. 14Then he would thrustH5221 it into the panH3595, orH176 kettleH1731, orH176 caldronH7037, orH176 potH6517; allH3605 that the forkH4207 broughtH5927 up the priestH3548 would takeH3947 for himself. ThusH3602 they didH6213 in ShilohH7887 to allH3605 the IsraelitesH3478 who cameH935 thereH8033. 15AlsoH1571, beforeH2962 40they burnedH6999 the fatH2459, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 would comeH935 and sayH559 to the manH376 who was sacrificingH2076, “GiveH5414 the priestH3548 meatH1320 for roastingH6740, as he will not takeH3947 boiledH1310 meatH1320 from you, onlyH3588H518 rawH2416.” 16IfH518 the manH376 saidH559 to him, “They must surelyH6999 41burnH6999 the fatH2459 42firstH3117, and then takeH3947 as muchH3512 as 43you desireH183,” then he would sayH559, “NoH3808, but you shall giveH5414 it to me nowH6258; and ifH518 not, I will takeH3947 it by forceH2394.” 17Thus the sinH2403 of the youngH5288 menH5288 was veryH3966 greatH1419 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, for the menH376 44despisedH5006 the offeringH4503 of the LordH3068.

Samuel before the Lord as a Boy

18Now 45SamuelH8050 was ministeringH8334 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, as a boyH5288 4647wearingH2296 a linenH906 ephodH646. 19And his motherH517 would makeH6213 him a littleH6996 48robeH4598 and bringH5927 it to him from yearH3117 to yearH3117 when she would comeH5927 up with her husbandH376 to offerH2076 49the yearlyH3117 sacrificeH2077. 20Then EliH5941 would 50blessH1288 ElkanahH511 and his wifeH802 and sayH559, “May the LordH3068 giveH7760 you 51childrenH2233 from thisH2088 womanH802 in placeH8478 of 52the oneH7596 she 53dedicatedH7596H7592 to the LordH3068.” And they wentH1980 to their own 54homeH4725.

2155The LordH3068 visitedH6485 HannahH2584; and she conceivedH2029 and gaveH3205 birthH3205 to threeH7969 sonsH1121 and twoH8147 daughtersH1323. And 56the boyH5288 SamuelH8050 grewH1431 beforeH5973 the LordH3068.

Eli Rebukes His Sons

22Now EliH5941 was veryH3966 oldH2204; and he heardH8085 57allH3605 that his sonsH1121 were doingH6213 to allH3605 IsraelH3478, and howH854H834 they layH7901 with 58the womenH802 who servedH6633 at the doorwayH6607 of the tentH168 of meetingH4150. 23He saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 do you doH6213 suchH428 thingsH1697, the evilH7451 thingsH1697 that I hearH8085 from allH3605 theseH428 peopleH5971? 24NoH408, my sonsH1121; for the reportH8052 is not goodH2896 59whichH834 I hearH8085 60the Lord’sH3068 peopleH5971 circulatingH5674. 25IfH518 one manH376 sinsH2398 against anotherH376, 61GodH430 will mediateH6419 for him; but 62ifH518 a manH376 sinsH2398 against the LordH3068, whoH4310 can intercedeH6419 for him?” But they would not listenH8085 to the voiceH6963 of their fatherH1, for the 63LordH3068 desiredH2654 to putH4191 them to deathH4191.

26Now the boyH5288 64SamuelH8050 65was growingH1980H1432 in statureH1432 and in favorH2896 bothH1571 with the LordH3068 and with menH376.

27Then 66a manH376 of GodH430 cameH935 to EliH5941 and saidH559 to him, “ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, ‘67Did I not indeedH1540 revealH1540 Myself to the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 when they were in EgyptH4714 in bondage to Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004? 2868Did I not chooseH977 them from allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to be My priestsH3548, to goH5927 up to My altarH4196, to burnH6999 incenseH7004, to carryH5375 an ephodH646 beforeH6440 Me; and did I not 69giveH5414 to the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 allH3605 the fireH801 offerings of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478? 29WhyH4100 do you 70kickH1163 at My sacrificeH2077 and at My offeringH4503 71whichH834 I have commandedH6680 in My 72dwellingH4583, and 73honorH3513 your sonsH1121 aboveH4480 Me, by makingH1254 yourselves fatH1254 with the 74choicestH7225 of everyH3605 offeringH4503 of My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478?’ 30ThereforeH3651 the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 declaresH5002, ‘75I did indeedH559 sayH559 that your houseH1004 and the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 should walkH1980 beforeH6440 Me foreverH5704H5769’; but nowH6258 the LordH3068 declaresH5002, ‘FarH2486 be it from Me--for 76those who honorH3513 Me I will honorH3513, and those 77who despiseH959 Me will be lightlyH7043 esteemedH7043. 31BeholdH2009, 78the daysH3117 are comingH935 when I will breakH1438 your 79strengthH2220 and the 80strengthH2220 of your father’sH1 houseH1004 soH4480 that there will not be an oldH2205 manH2205 in your houseH1004. 32You will seeH5027 81the distressH6862 of My dwellingH4583, in spite of allH3605 the goodH3190 that 82I doH3190 for IsraelH3478; and an 83oldH2205 manH2205 will not be in your houseH1004 foreverH3605H3117. 33Yet I will not cutH3772 offH3772 everyH376 manH376 of yours from My altarH4196 84so that your eyesH5869 will failH3615 from weeping and your soulH5315 grieveH109, and allH3605 the increaseH4768 of your houseH1004 will dieH4191 85in the primeH376 of lifeH582. 34ThisH2088 will be 86the signH226 to you whichH834 will comeH935 concerningH413 your twoH8147 sonsH1121, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372: 87on the sameH259 dayH3117 bothH8147 of them will dieH4191. 35But 88I will raiseH6965 up for Myself a faithfulH539 priestH3548 who will doH6213 according to whatH834 is in My heartH3824 and in My soulH5315; and 89I will buildH1129 him an enduringH539 houseH1004, and he will walkH1980 beforeH6440 90My anointedH4899 alwaysH3605H3117. 36EveryoneH3605 who is leftH3498 in your houseH1004 will comeH935 and bowH7812 downH7812 to him for a 91pieceH95 of silverH3701 or a loafH3603 of breadH3899 and sayH559, “PleaseH4994 92assignH5596 me to oneH259 of the priest’sH3550 officesH3550 so that I may eatH398 a pieceH6595 of breadH3899.”’”
