1 Samuel 25
1And SamuelH8050 diedH4191; and all IsraelH3478 gatheredH6908 themselves togetherH6908, and lamentedH5594 him, and buriedH6912 him in his houseH1004 at RamahH7414. And DavidH1732 aroseH6965, and wentH3381 downH3381 to the wildernessH4057 of ParanH6290.
2And there wasH1961 a manH376 in MaonH4584, whose possessions wereH1961 in CarmelH3760; and the manH376 wasH1961 veryH3966 greatH1419, and he had threeH7969 thousandH505 sheepH6629, and a thousandH505 goatsH5795: and he wasH1961 shearingH1494 his sheepH6629 in CarmelH3760. 3Now the nameH8034 of the manH376 was NabalH5037; and the nameH8034 of his wifeH802 AbigailH26; and the womanH802 was of goodH2896 understanding, and of a beautifulH3303 countenance: but the manH376 was churlish and evilH7451 in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb. 4And DavidH1732 heardH8085 in the wildernessH4057 that NabalH5037 was shearingH1494 his sheepH6629. 5And DavidH1732 sentH7971 tenH6235 youngH5288 menH5288, and DavidH1732 saidH559 unto the youngH5288 menH5288, Get you up to CarmelH3760, and goH935 to NabalH5037, and greet him in my nameH8034: 6and thusH3541 shall ye sayH559 to him that liveth in prosperity, PeaceH7965 be unto thee, and peaceH7965 be to thy houseH1004, and peaceH7965 be unto all that thou hast. 7And nowH6258 I have heardH8085 that thou hast shearersH1494: thy shepherdsH7462 have nowH6258 beenH1961 with us, and we did them no hurt, neither wasH1961 there aught missingH6485 unto them, all the while they were in CarmelH3760. 8AskH7592 thy youngH5288 menH5288, and they will tellH5046 thee: wherefore let the youngH5288 menH5288 findH4672 favorH2580 in thine eyesH5869; for we comeH935 in a goodH2896 dayH3117: giveH5414, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy handH3027, unto thy servantsH5650, and to thy sonH1121 DavidH1732.
9And when David’s youngH5288 menH5288 cameH935, they spake to NabalH5037 according to all those wordsH1697 in the nameH8034 of DavidH1732, and ceased. 10And NabalH5037 answered David’s servantsH5650, and saidH559, Who is DavidH1732? and who is the sonH1121 of JesseH3448? there are manyH7235 servantsH5650 now-a-days that breakH6555 away every manH376 from his masterH113. 11Shall I then takeH3947 my breadH3899, and my waterH4325, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearersH1494, and giveH5414 it unto menH376 of whom I knowH3045 not whence they are? 12So David’s youngH5288 menH5288 turnedH2015 on their wayH1870, and wentH935 backH7725, and cameH935 and toldH5046 him according to all these wordsH1697. 13And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto his menH376, GirdH2296 ye on every manH376 his swordH2719. And they girdedH2296 on every manH376 his swordH2719; and DavidH1732 alsoH1571 girdedH2296 on his swordH2719: and there wentH5927 up after DavidH1732 about fourH702 hundredH3967 menH376; and two hundredH3967 abode by the baggage.
14But oneH259 of the youngH5288 menH5288 toldH5046 AbigailH26, Nabal’s wifeH802, sayingH559, Behold, DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 out of the wildernessH4057 to salute our masterH113; and he railed at them. 15But the menH376 wereH1961 veryH3966 goodH2896 unto us, and we wereH1961 not hurt, neither missedH6485 we anything, as long as we wentH1980 with them, when we wereH1961 in the fieldsH7704: 16they wereH1961 a wallH2346 unto us both by nightH3915 and by dayH3117, all the while we wereH1961 with them keeping the sheepH6629. 17NowH6258 thereforeH6258 knowH3045 and considerH7200 what thou wilt do; for evilH7451 is determined against our masterH113, and against all his houseH1004: for he is such a worthlessH1100 fellow, that one cannot speakH1696 to him.
18Then AbigailH26 madeH6213 hasteH4116, and tookH3947 twoH8147 hundredH3967 loaves, and twoH8147 bottles of wineH3196, and fiveH2568 sheepH6629 ready dressed, and fiveH2568 measures of parched grainH7039, and a hundredH3967 clusters of raisinsH6778, and twoH8147 hundredH3967 cakesH1690 of figsH1690, and laid them on asses. 19And she saidH559 unto her youngH5288 menH376, GoH935 on before me; behold, I comeH935 after you. But she toldH5046 not her husbandH376 NabalH5037. 20And it wasH1961 so, as she rodeH7392 on her ass, and came downH3381 by the covert of the mountainH2022, that, behold, DavidH1732 and his menH376 came downH3381 toward her; and she metH6298 them. 21Now DavidH1732 had saidH559, SurelyH389 in vain have I keptH8104 all that this fellow hath in the wildernessH4057, so that nothing was missedH6485 of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returnedH7725 me evilH7451 for goodH2896. 22GodH430 do so unto the enemiesH341 of DavidH1732, and more also, if I leaveH7604 of all that pertain to him by the morningH1242 light so much as one man-child.
23And when AbigailH26 sawH7200 DavidH1732, she hasted, and alighted from her ass, and fellH5307 before DavidH1732 on her faceH6440, and bowedH7812 herself to the groundH776. 24And she fellH5307 at his feetH7272, and saidH559, Upon me, my lordH113, upon me be the iniquityH5771; and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speakH1696 in thine earsH241, and hearH8085 thou the wordsH1697 of thy handmaid. 25Let not my lordH113, I pray thee, regard this worthlessH1100 fellow, even NabalH5037; for as his nameH8034 is, soH3651 is he; NabalH5037 is his nameH8034, and follyH5039 is with him: but I thy handmaid sawH7200 not the youngH5288 menH376 of my lordH113, whom thou didst sendH7971. 26NowH6258 thereforeH6258, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soulH5315 liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own handH3027, nowH6258 thereforeH6258 let thine enemiesH341, and them that seekH1245 evilH7451 to my lord, beH1961 as NabalH5037. 27And nowH6258 this present which thy servantH5288 hath broughtH935 unto my lordH113, let it be givenH5414 unto the youngH5288 menH5288 that follow my lordH113. 28ForgiveH5375, I pray thee, the trespass of thy handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly makeH6213 my lord a sure houseH1004, because my lord fighteth the battlesH4421 of Jehovah; and evilH7451 shall not be foundH4672 in thee all thy daysH3117. 29And though menH120 beH1961 risenH6965 up to pursueH7291 thee, and to seekH1245 thy soulH5315, yet the soulH5315 of my lord shall beH1961 bound in the bundle of lifeH5315 with Jehovah thy GodH430; and the soulsH5315 of thine enemiesH341, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling. 30And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the goodH2896 that he hath spokenH1696 concerning thee, and shall have appointedH6680 thee princeH5057 over IsraelH3478, 31that this shall beH1961 no grief unto thee, nor offence of heartH3820 unto my lord, either that thou hast shedH8210 bloodH1818 without causeH2600, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt wellH3190 with my lord, then rememberH2142 thy handmaid.
32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to AbigailH26, BlessedH1288 be Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, who sentH7971 thee this dayH3117 to meetH7122 me: 33and blessedH1288 be thy discretion, and blessedH1288 be thou, that hast kept me this dayH3117 from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own handH3027. 34For in very deed, as Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and comeH935 to meetH7122 me, surely there had not been leftH3498 unto NabalH5037 by the morningH1242 lightH216 so much as one man-child. 35So DavidH1732 receivedH3947 of her handH3027 that which she had broughtH935 him: and he saidH559 unto her, GoH935 up in peaceH7965 to thy houseH1004; seeH7200, I have hearkened to thy voiceH6963, and have acceptedH3947 thy person.
36And AbigailH26 cameH935 to NabalH5037; and, behold, he held a feastH4960 in his houseH1004, like the feastH4960 of a kingH4428; and Nabal’s heartH3820 was merry within him, for he was veryH3966 drunkenH7910: wherefore she toldH5046 him nothing, less or more, until the morningH1242 lightH216. 37And it came to pass in the morningH1242, when the wineH3196 wasH1961 goneH3318 out of NabalH5037, that his wifeH802 toldH5046 him these thingsH1697, and his heartH3820 diedH4191 within him, and he becameH1961 as a stoneH68. 38And it came to pass about tenH6235 daysH3117 after, that Jehovah smote NabalH5037, so that he diedH4191.
39And when DavidH1732 heardH8085 that NabalH5037 was deadH4191, he saidH559, BlessedH1288 be Jehovah, that hath pleaded the causeH7379 of my reproachH2781 from the handH3027 of NabalH5037, and hath keptH2820 backH7725 his servantH5650 from evilH7451: and the evil-doing of NabalH5037 hath Jehovah returnedH7725 upon his own headH7218. And DavidH1732 sentH7971 and spake concerning AbigailH26, to takeH3947 her to him to wifeH802. 40And when the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 were comeH935 to AbigailH26 to CarmelH3760, they spake unto her, sayingH559, DavidH1732 hath sentH7971 us unto thee, to takeH3947 thee to him to wifeH802. 41And she aroseH6965, and bowedH7812 herself with her faceH639 to the earthH776, and saidH559, Behold, thy handmaid is a servantH5650 to washH7364 the feetH7272 of the servantsH5650 of my lordH113. 42And AbigailH26 hasted, and aroseH6965, and rodeH7392 upon an ass, with fiveH2568 damsels of hers that followed her; and she wentH1980 after the messengersH4397 of DavidH1732, and becameH1961 his wifeH802.
43DavidH1732 alsoH1571 tookH3947 AhinoamH293 of JezreelH3157; and they becameH1961 both of them his wivesH802. 44Now SaulH7586 had givenH5414 MichalH4324 his daughterH1323, David’s wifeH802, to PaltiH6406 the sonH1121 of Laish, who was of GallimH1554.
