1 Samuel 20
1And DavidH1732 fledH1272 from NaiothH5121 in RamahH7414, and cameH935 and saidH559 before JonathanH3083, What have I done? what is mine iniquityH5771? and what is my sinH2403 before thy fatherH1, that he seeketh my lifeH5315? 2And he saidH559 unto him, FarH2486 from it; thou shalt not dieH4191: behold, my fatherH1 doeth nothing either greatH1419 or smallH6996, but that he discloseth it unto me; and whyH4069 should my fatherH1 hideH5641 this thingH1697 from me? it is not so. 3And DavidH1732 sware moreover, and saidH559, Thy fatherH1 knoweth well that I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in thine eyesH5869; and he saith, Let not JonathanH3083 knowH3045 this, lestH6435 he be grieved: but truly as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soulH5315 liveth, there is but a step between me and deathH4194. 4Then saidH559 JonathanH3083 unto DavidH1732, Whatsoever thy soulH5315 desireth, I will even do it for thee. 5And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto JonathanH3083, Behold, to-morrow is the newH2320 moonH2320, and I should not fail to sitH3427 with the kingH4428 at meat: but let me goH7971, that I may hideH5641 myself in the fieldH7704 unto the thirdH7992 day at even. 6If thy fatherH1 missH6485 me at all, then sayH559, DavidH1732 earnestly askedH7592 leave of me that he might runH7323 to Beth-lehem his cityH5892; for it is the yearly sacrificeH2077 there for all the familyH4940. 7If he sayH559 thusH3541, It is well; thy servantH5650 shall have peaceH7965: but if he be wroth, then knowH3045 that evilH7451 is determined by him. 8Therefore deal kindly with thy servantH5650; for thou hast broughtH935 thy servantH5650 into a covenantH1285 of Jehovah with thee: but if there be in me iniquityH5771, slay me thyself; for whyH4100 shouldest thou bringH935 me to thy fatherH1? 9And JonathanH3083 saidH559, FarH2486 be it from thee; for if I should at all knowH3045 that evilH7451 were determined by my fatherH1 to comeH935 upon thee, then would not I tellH5046 it thee? 10Then saidH559 DavidH1732 to JonathanH3083, Who shall tellH5046 me if perchance thy fatherH1 answerH6030 thee roughly? 11And JonathanH3083 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, ComeH3318, and let us goH3318 out into the fieldH7704. And they wentH3318 out both of them into the fieldH7704.
12And JonathanH3083 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, be witness: when I have sounded my fatherH1 about this timeH6256 to-morrow, or the thirdH7992 day, behold, if there be goodH2896 toward DavidH1732, shall I not thenH227 sendH7971 unto thee, and disclose it unto thee? 13Jehovah do so to JonathanH3083, and more also, should it please my fatherH1 to do thee evilH7451, if I disclose it not unto thee, and sendH7971 thee awayH7971, that thou mayest goH1980 in peaceH7965: and Jehovah beH1961 with thee, as he hath beenH1961 with my fatherH1. 14And thou shalt not only while yetH5750 I live show me the lovingkindness of Jehovah, that I dieH4191 not; 15but also thou shalt not cutH3772 off thy kindness from my houseH1004 for everH5769; no, not when Jehovah hath cutH3772 off the enemiesH341 of DavidH1732 every oneH376 from the faceH6440 of the earthH127. 16So JonathanH3083 madeH3772 a covenant with the houseH1004 of DavidH1732, saying, And Jehovah will requireH1245 it at the handH3027 of David’s enemiesH341.
17And JonathanH3083 caused DavidH1732 to swearH7650 again, for the loveH157 that he had to him; for he lovedH157 him as he lovedH157 his ownH5315 soulH5315. 18Then JonathanH3083 saidH559 unto him, To-morrow is the newH2320 moonH2320: and thou wilt be missedH6485, because thy seatH4186 will be empty. 19And when thou hast stayed threeH8027 daysH3117, thou shalt goH935 down quickly, and comeH935 to the placeH4725 whereH834 thou didst hideH5641 thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remainH3427 by the stoneH68 Ezel. 20And I will shootH3384 threeH7969 arrowsH2678 on the sideH6654 thereof, as though I shotH3384 at a mark. 21And, behold, I will sendH7971 the ladH5288, sayingH559, GoH935, findH4672 the arrowsH2678. If I sayH559 unto the ladH5288, Behold, the arrowsH2678 are on this side of thee; takeH3947 them, and comeH935; for there is peaceH7965 to thee and no hurt, as Jehovah liveth. 22But if I sayH559 thusH3541 unto the boy, Behold, the arrowsH2678 are beyond thee; goH7971 thy way; for Jehovah hath sentH7971 thee awayH7971. 23And as touching the matterH1697 which thou and I have spokenH1696 of, behold, Jehovah is between thee and me for everH5769.
24So DavidH1732 hidH5641 himself in the fieldH7704: and when the newH2320 moonH2320 wasH1961 come, the kingH4428 satH3427 him downH3427 to eatH398 foodH3899. 25And the kingH4428 satH3427 upon his seatH4186, as at other timesH6471, even upon the seatH4186 by the wallH7023; and JonathanH3083 stoodH6965 up, and AbnerH74 satH3427 by Saul’s sideH6654: but David’s placeH4725 was empty. 26Nevertheless SaulH7586 spake not anythingH3972 that dayH3117: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not cleanH2889; surely he is not cleanH2889. 27And it cameH935 to pass on the morrow after the newH2320 moonH2320, which wasH1961 the secondH8145 dayH3117, that David’s placeH4725 wasH1961 empty: and SaulH7586 saidH559 unto JonathanH3083 his sonH1121, Wherefore cometh not the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 to meat, neither yesterdayH8543, nor to-day? 28And JonathanH3083 answeredH6030 SaulH7586, DavidH1732 earnestly askedH7592 leave of me to go to Beth-lehem: 29and he saidH559, Let me goH935, I pray thee; for our familyH4940 hath a sacrificeH2077 in the cityH5892; and my brotherH251, he hath commandedH6680 me to be there: and nowH6258, if I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in thine eyesH5869, let me get awayH7971, I pray thee, and seeH7200 my brethren. ThereforeH3651 he is not comeH935 unto the king’sH4428 tableH7979.
30Then Saul’s angerH639 was kindled against JonathanH3083, and he saidH559 unto him, Thou sonH1121 of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I knowH3045 that thou hast chosenH977 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 to thine own shameH1322, and unto the shameH1322 of thy mother’sH517 nakednessH6172? 31For as long as the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 liveth upon the groundH127, thou shalt not be establishedH3559, nor thy kingdomH4438. Wherefore nowH6258 sendH7971 and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. 32And JonathanH3083 answered SaulH7586 his fatherH1, and saidH559 unto him, Wherefore should he be putH4191 to deathH4191? what hath he done? 33And SaulH7586 cast his spearH2595 at him to smite him; whereby JonathanH3083 knewH3045 that it was determined of his fatherH1 to putH4191 DavidH1732 to deathH4191. 34So JonathanH3083 aroseH6965 from the tableH7979 in fierce angerH639, and did eatH398 no foodH3899 the secondH8145 dayH3117 of the monthH2320; for he was grieved for DavidH1732, because his fatherH1 had done him shameH3637.
35And it came to pass in the morningH1242, that JonathanH3083 wentH3318 out into the fieldH7704 at the timeH4150 appointedH4150 with DavidH1732, and a littleH6996 ladH5288 with him. 36And he saidH559 unto his ladH5288, RunH7323, findH4672 now the arrowsH2678 which I shootH3384. And as the ladH5288 ranH7323, he shotH3384 an arrowH2678 beyond him. 37And whenH834 the ladH5288 was comeH935 to the placeH4725 of the arrowH2678 which JonathanH3083 had shotH3384, JonathanH3083 cried after the ladH5288, and saidH559, Is not the arrowH2678 beyond thee? 38And JonathanH3083 cried after the ladH5288, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan’s ladH5288 gatheredH3950 up the arrowsH2678, and cameH935 to his masterH113. 39But the ladH5288 knewH3045 not anythingH1697: onlyH389 JonathanH3083 and DavidH1732 knewH3045 the matterH1697. 40And JonathanH3083 gaveH5414 his weaponsH3627 unto his ladH5288, and saidH559 unto him, GoH935, carry them to the cityH5892. 41And as soon as the ladH5288 was goneH935, DavidH1732 aroseH6965 out of a place toward the SouthH5045, and fellH5307 on his faceH639 to the groundH776, and bowedH7812 himself threeH7969 timesH6471: and they kissedH5401 oneH376 another, and weptH1058 oneH376 with another, until DavidH1732 exceeded. 42And JonathanH3083 saidH559 to DavidH1732, GoH1980 in peaceH7965, forasmuch as we have swornH7650 both of us in the nameH8034 of Jehovah, sayingH559, Jehovah shall beH1961 between me and thee, and between my seedH2233 and thy seedH2233, for everH5769. And he arose and departed: and JonathanH3083 wentH1980 into the city.
