1 Samuel 2
Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving
1Then HannahH2584 1prayedH6419 and saidH559, “My heartH3820 rejoicesH5970 in the LordH3068; 2My 3hornH7161 is exaltedH7311 in the LordH3068, My mouthH6310 4speaksH7337 boldlyH7337 againstH5921 my enemiesH340, BecauseH3588 5I rejoiceH8055 in Your salvationH3444.26ThereH369 isH369 noH369 oneH369 holyH6918 like the LordH3068, IndeedH3588, 7thereH369 isH369 noH369 oneH369 besidesH1115 You, 8NorH369 isH369 thereH369 any rockH6697 like our GodH430.3Do not go on 9boastingH1696H7235 so veryH1364 proudlyH1364, 10Do not let arroganceH6277 comeH3318 outH3318 of your mouthH6310; 11For the LordH3068 is a GodH410 of knowledgeH1844, 12And 13with Him actionsH5949 are weighedH8505.414The bowsH7198 of the mightyH1368 are brokenH2844 toH2844 piecesH2844, 15But those who have stumbledH3782 strapH247 onH247 strengthH2428.5Those who were fullH7649 hireH7936 themselves outH7936 for breadH3899, But those who were hungryH7457 ceaseH2308 to be hungry. 16EvenH5704 the infertileH6135 womanH6135 givesH3205 birthH3205 to sevenH7651, But 17she who has manyH7227 childrenH1121 languishesH535.618The LordH3068 putsH4191 toH4191 deathH4191 and makesH2421 aliveH2421; 19He bringsH3381 downH3381 to 20SheolH7585 and bringsH5927 upH5927.721The LordH3068 makesH3423 poorH3423 and richH6238; 22He humblesH8213, He alsoH637 exaltsH7311.823He raisesH6965 the poorH1800 from the dustH6083, 24He liftsH7311 the needyH34 from the garbageH830 heapH6083 25To seatH3427 them with noblesH5081, And He givesH5157 them a seatH3678 of honorH3519 asH5157 anH5157 inheritanceH5157; 26For the pillarsH4690 of the earthH776 are the Lord’sH3068, And He setH7896 the worldH8398 on them.927He watchesH8104 overH8104 the feetH7272 of His godlyH2623 onesH2623, 28But the wickedH7563 onesH7563 areH1826 silencedH1826 in darknessH2822; 29For not by mightH3581 shall a personH376 prevailH1396.1030Those who contendH7378 with the LordH3068 will be terrifiedH2865; 31AgainstH5921 them He will thunderH7481 in the heavensH8064, 32The LordH3068 will judgeH1777 the endsH657 of the earthH776; 33And He will giveH5414 strengthH5797 to His kingH4428, 34And will exaltH7311 the 35hornH7161 of His anointedH4899.”
11Then ElkanahH511 wentH1980 to his homeH1004 at 36RamahH7414. 37But the boyH5288 continuedH1961 to attendH8334 toH8334 the serviceH8334 of the LordH3068 beforeH6440 EliH5941 the priestH3548.
The Sin of Eli’s Sons
12Now the sonsH1121 of EliH5941 were 3839uselessH1100 menH1121; they did not knowH3045 the LordH3068. 1340And this was the customH4941 of the priestsH3548 with the peopleH5971: when anyoneH3605H376 was offeringH2076 a sacrificeH2077, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 would comeH935 while the meatH1320 was cookingH1310, with a three-prongedH7969H8127 forkH4207 in his handH3027. 14And he would thrustH5221 it into the panH3595, orH176 kettleH1731, orH176 caldronH7037, orH176 potH6517; everythingH3605 that the forkH4207 broughtH5927 upH5927, the priestH3548 would takeH3947 for himself. They didH6213 soH3602 in ShilohH7887 to allH3605 the IsraelitesH3478 who cameH935 thereH8033. 15AlsoH1571, beforeH2962 41they 42burnedH6999 the fatH2459, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 would comeH935 and sayH559 to the manH376 who was sacrificingH2076, “GiveH5414 the priestH3548 meatH1320 for roastingH6740, as he will not takeH3947 cookedH1310 meatH1320 from you, onlyH3588H518 rawH2416.” 16And if the manH376 saidH559 to him, “They mustH6999 43burnH6999 the fatH2459 44firstH3117, then takeH3947 as muchH3512 asH3512 45you desireH183,” then he would sayH559, “NoH3808, but you must giveH5414 it to me nowH6258; and ifH518 not, I am takingH3947 it by forceH2394!” 17And so the sinH2403 of the youngH5288 menH5288 was veryH3966 greatH1419 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, for the menH376 46treatedH5006 the offeringH4503 of the LordH3068 disrespectfullyH5006.
Samuel before the Lord as a Boy
18Now 47SamuelH8050 was ministeringH8334 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, as a boyH5288 48wearingH2296 a linenH906 ephodH646. 19And his motherH517 would makeH6213 for him a littleH6996 49robeH4598 and bringH5927 it upH5927 to him from yearH3117 to yearH3117 when she would comeH5927 upH5927 with her husbandH376 to offerH2076 50the yearlyH3117 sacrificeH2077. 20Then EliH5941 would 51blessH1288 ElkanahH511 and his wifeH802, and sayH559, “May the LordH3068 giveH7760 you 52childrenH2233 from thisH2088 womanH802 inH8478 placeH8478 ofH8478 the 53oneH7596 she 54requestedH7592 of the LordH3068.” And they wentH1980 to their own 55homeH4725.
215657The LordH3068 indeedH3588 visitedH6485 HannahH2584, and she conceivedH2029 and gaveH3205 birthH3205 to threeH7969 sonsH1121 and twoH8147 daughtersH1323. And 58the boyH5288 SamuelH8050 grewH1431 upH1431 59beforeH5973 the LordH3068.
Eli Rebukes His Sons
22Now EliH5941 wasH2204 veryH3966 oldH2204; and he heardH8085 about 60everythingH3605 that his sonsH1121 were doingH6213 to allH3605 IsraelH3478, and that they sleptH7901 with 61the womenH802 who servedH6633 at the doorwayH6607 of the tentH168 of meetingH4150. 23So he saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 are you doingH6213 suchH428 thingsH1697 as theseH428, the evilH7451 thingsH1697 that I hearH8085 from allH3605 theseH428 peopleH5971? 24NoH408, my sonsH1121; for the reportH8052 is not goodH2896 62whichH834 I hearH8085 the Lord’sH3068 peopleH5971 circulatingH5674. 25IfH518 one personH376 sinsH2398 against anotherH376, 63GodH430 will mediateH6419 for him; but 64ifH518 a personH376 sinsH2398 against the LordH3068, whoH4310 can intercedeH6419 for him?” But they would not listenH8085 to the voiceH6963 of their fatherH1, for the 65LordH3068 desiredH2654 to putH4191 them toH4191 deathH4191.
26Now the boyH5288 66SamuelH8050 was continuingH1980 to growH1432 and to be in favorH2896 bothH1571 with the LordH3068 and with peopleH376.
27Then 67a manH376 of GodH430 cameH935 to EliH5941 and saidH559 to him, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: ‘68Did I not indeedH1540 revealH1540 Myself to the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 when they were in EgyptH4714 in bondage to Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004? 2869Did I not chooseH977 them from allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to be My priestsH3548, to goH5927 upH5927 to My altarH4196, to burnH6999 incenseH7004, to carryH5375 an ephodH646 beforeH6440 Me? And did I not 70giveH5414 to the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 allH3605 the fireH801 offerings of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478? 29WhyH4100 are you 7172showingH1163 contemptH1163 for My sacrificeH2077 and My offeringH4503 73whichH834 I have commandedH6680 for My 74dwellingH4583, and why are you 75honoringH3513 your sonsH1121 aboveH4480 Me, by makingH1254 yourselves fatH1254 with the 76choicestH7225 of everyH3605 offeringH4503 of My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478?’ 30ThereforeH3651 the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 declaresH5002, ‘77I did indeedH559 sayH559 that your houseH1004 and the houseH1004 of your fatherH1 was to walkH1980 beforeH6440 Me foreverH5704H5769’; but nowH6258 the LordH3068 declaresH5002, ‘FarH2486 be it from Me--for 78those who honorH3513 Me I will honorH3513, and those 79who despiseH959 Me will beH7043 insignificantH7043. 31BeholdH2009, 80the daysH3117 are comingH935 when I will eliminateH1438 your 81strengthH2220 and the 82strengthH2220 of your father’sH1 houseH1004, soH4480 thatH4480 there will notH4480 be an oldH2205 manH2205 in your houseH1004. 32And you will lookH5027 at 83the distressH6862 of My dwellingH4583, in spite of allH3605 the goodH3190 that 84I doH3190 for IsraelH3478; and there will neverH3808H3605H3117 be an 85oldH2205 manH2205 in your houseH1004. 33Yet I will not cutH3772 offH3772 everyH376 manH376 of yours from My altarH4196, 86so that your eyesH5869 will failH3615 from weeping and your soulH5315 grieveH109, and allH3605 the 87increaseH4768 of your houseH1004 will dieH4191 88in the primeH376 of lifeH376. 34And thisH2088 will be 89the signH226 to you whichH834 will comeH935 inH413 regardH413 toH413 your twoH8147 sonsH1121, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372: 90on the sameH259 dayH3117 bothH8147 of them will dieH4191. 35But 91I will raiseH6965 upH6965 for Myself a faithfulH539 priestH3548 who will doH6213 according to whatH834 is in My heartH3824 and My soulH5315; and 92I will buildH1129 him an enduringH539 houseH1004, and he will walkH1980 beforeH6440 93My anointedH4899 alwaysH3605H3117. 36And everyoneH3605 who is leftH3498 in your houseH1004 will comeH935 to bowH2331 downH2331 to him for a 94silverH3701 coinH95 or a loafH3603 of breadH3899 and sayH559, “PleaseH4994 95assignH5596 me to oneH259 of the priest’sH3550 officesH3550 so that I may eatH398 a pieceH6595 of breadH3899.”’”
