1 Samuel 16
Revised Version 1895
1And the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, HowH4970 longH5704 wiltH56 thou mournH56 for SaulH7586, seeingH7200 I have rejectedH3988 him from beingH1121 kingH4428 over IsraelH3478? fillH4390 thine hornH7161 with oilH8081, and goH7971, I will sendH7971 thee to JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite: for I have providedH7200 meH413 a kingH4428 among his sonsH1121. 2And SamuelH8050 saidH559, HowH349 canH349 I goH935? if SaulH7586 hearH8085 it, he will killH2026 meH935. And the LORDH3068 saidH559, TakeH3947 an heiferH5697 with thee, and sayH559, I am comeH935 to sacrificeH2076 to the LORDH3068. 3And callH7121 JesseH3448 to the sacrificeH2077, and I will shew thee whatH834 thou shalt doH6213: and thou shalt anointH4886 unto meH413 him whomH834 I nameH559 unto thee. 4And SamuelH8050 didH6213 that whichH834 the LORDH3068 spake, and cameH935 to Beth-lehem. And the eldersH2205 of the cityH5892 cameH935 to meetH7122 him tremblingH2729, and saidH559, Comest thou peaceablyH7965? 5And he saidH559, PeaceablyH7965: I am comeH935 to sacrificeH2077 unto the LORDH3068: sanctifyH6942 yourselves, and comeH935 with meH935 to the sacrificeH2077. And he sanctifiedH6942 JesseH3448 and his sonsH1121, and calledH7121 them to the sacrificeH2077. 6And it cameH935 to passH935, when they were comeH935, that he lookedH7200 on EliabH446, and saidH559, SurelyH389 the LORD’SH3068 anointedH4899 is beforeH5048 him. 7But the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, LookH7200 notH3808 on his countenance, or on the heightH6967 of his statureH6967; becauseH3588 I have rejectedH3988 him: for the LORDH3068 seeth notH3808 as manH120 seeth; for manH120 looketh on the outwardH5869 appearanceH4758, but the LORDH3068 looketh on the heartH3824. 8Then JesseH3448 calledH7121 AbinadabH41, and madeH3448 him passH5674 beforeH6440 SamuelH8050. And he saidH559, NeitherH3808 hath the LORDH3068 chosenH977 this. 9Then JesseH3448 madeH3448 ShammahH8048 to passH5674 by. And he saidH559, NeitherH3808 hath the LORDH3068 chosenH977 this. 10And JesseH3448 madeH3448 sevenH7651 of his sonsH1121 to passH5674 beforeH6440 SamuelH8050. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, The LORDH3068 hath notH3808 chosenH977 theseH428. 11And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, Are hereH6311 allH5704 thy childrenH5288? And he saidH559, There remaineth yet the youngestH6996, and, beholdH2009, he keepeth the sheepH6629. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto JesseH3448, SendH7971 and fetch him: for weH3588 will notH3808 sitH5437 downH7971 tillH5704 he comeH935 hither. 12And he sentH7971, and broughtH935 him in. NowH3588 he was ruddyH132, and withal of a beautifulH3303 countenance, and goodly to lookH5869 uponH935. And the LORDH3068 saidH559, AriseH6965, anointH4886 him: for this is he. 13Then SamuelH8050 tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081, and anointedH4886 him in the midstH7130 of his brethrenH251: and the spiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 cameH413 mightily uponH413 DavidH1732 from that dayH3117 forwardH4605. SoH3947 SamuelH8050 roseH6965 upH6965, and wentH6965 to RamahH7414. 14Now the spiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 had departedH5493 from SaulH7586, and an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from the LORDH3068 troubled him. 15And Saul’sH7586 servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, BeholdH2009 nowH4994, an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 troubleth thee. 16LetH4994 our lordH113 nowH4994 commandH3027 thy servantsH5650, whichH7307 are beforeH6440 thee, to seekH1245 outH3045 a manH376 who is a cunning playerH5059 on the harpH3658: and it shall comeH1961 to passH1961, when the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 is uponH5921 thee, that he shall playH5059 with his handH3027, and thou shalt be wellH2895. 17And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650, ProvideH7200 meH413 nowH4994 a manH376 that canH7200 playH5059 wellH3190, and bringH935 him to meH413. 18Then answeredH559 one of the youngH5288 menH376, and saidH559, BeholdH2009, I have seenH7200 a sonH1121 of JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playingH5059, and a mightyH1368 manH376 of valour, and a manH376 of warH4421, and prudentH995 in speechH1697, and a comely personH376, and the LORDH3068 is with him. 19Wherefore SaulH7586 sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto JesseH3448, and saidH559, SendH7971 meH413 DavidH1732 thy sonH1121, whichH834 is with the sheepH6629. 20And JesseH3448 tookH3947 an ass laden with breadH3899, and a bottleH4997 of wineH3196, and a kid, and sentH7971 them by DavidH1732 his sonH1121 unto SaulH7586. 21And DavidH1732 cameH935 to SaulH7586, and stoodH5975 beforeH6440 him: and he lovedH157 him greatlyH3966; and he becameH1961 his armourbearer. 22And SaulH7586 sentH7971 to JesseH3448, sayingH559, LetH7971 DavidH1732, I prayH4994 thee, standH5975 beforeH6440 meH413; for he hath foundH4672 favour in my sightH5869. 23And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 was uponH5921 SaulH7586, that DavidH1732 tookH3947 the harpH3658, and playedH5059 with his handH3027: soH3947 SaulH7586 was refreshedH7304, and was wellH2895, and the evilH7451 spiritH7307 departedH5493 from him.
