1 Samuel 16

Revised Webster's Bible

1And the LORDH3068 saidH559 to SamuelH8050, How long wilt thou mournH56 for SaulH7586, seeing I have rejectedH3988 him from reigningH4427 over IsraelH3478? fillH4390 thy hornH7161 with oilH8081, and goH3212, I will sendH7971 thee to JesseH3448 the BethlehemiteH1022: for I have providedH7200 me a kingH4428 among his sonsH1121. 2And SamuelH8050 saidH559, How can I goH3212? if SaulH7586 shall hearH8085 it, he will killH2026 me. And the LORDH3068 saidH559, TakeH3947 an heiferH1241H5697 with theeH3027, and sayH559, I have comeH935 to sacrificeH2076 to the LORDH3068.1 3And callH7121 JesseH3448 to the sacrificeH2077, and I will showH3045 thee what thou shalt doH6213: and thou shalt anointH4886 to me him whom I nameH559 to thee. 4And SamuelH8050 didH6213 that which the LORDH3068 spokeH1696, and cameH935 to BethlehemH1035. And the eldersH2205 of the townH5892 trembledH2729 at his comingH7125, and saidH559, ComestH935 thou peaceablyH7965?2 5And he saidH559, PeaceablyH7965: I have comeH935 to sacrificeH2076 to the LORDH3068: sanctifyH6942 yourselves, and comeH935 with me to the sacrificeH2077. And he sanctifiedH6942 JesseH3448 and his sonsH1121, and calledH7121 them to the sacrificeH2077.

6And it came to pass, when they had comeH935, that he lookedH7200 on EliabH446, and saidH559, Surely the LORD’SH3068 anointedH4899 is before him.3 7But the LORDH3068 saidH559 to SamuelH8050, LookH5027 not on his countenanceH4758, or on the heightH1364 of his statureH6967; because I have refusedH3988 him: for the LORD seeth not as manH120 seethH7200; for manH120 lookethH7200 on the outward appearanceH5869, but the LORDH3068 lookethH7200 on the heartH3824.4 8Then JesseH3448 calledH7121 AbinadabH41, and made him passH5674 beforeH6440 SamuelH8050. And he saidH559, Neither hath the LORDH3068 chosenH977 this. 9Then JesseH3448 made ShammahH8048 to pass byH5674. And he saidH559, Neither hath the LORDH3068 chosenH977 this.5 10Again, JesseH3448 made sevenH7651 of his sonsH1121 to passH5674 beforeH6440 SamuelH8050. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to JesseH3448, The LORDH3068 hath not chosenH977 these. 11And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to JesseH3448, Are here allH8552 thy childrenH5288? And he saidH559, There remainethH7604 yet the youngestH6996, and, behold, he keepethH7462 the sheepH6629. And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to JesseH3448, SendH7971 and bringH3947 him: for we will not sit downH5437 till he hath comeH935 hereH6311.6 12And he sentH7971, and brought him inH935. Now he was ruddyH132, and alsoH5973 of a beautifulH3303 countenanceH5869, and a good appearanceH2896H7210. And the LORDH3068 saidH559, AriseH6965, anointH4886 him: for this is he.7 13Then SamuelH8050 tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081, and anointedH4886 him in the midstH7130 of his brethrenH251: and the SpiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 cameH6743 upon DavidH1732 from that dayH3117 onwardH4605. So SamuelH8050 aroseH6965, and wentH3212 to RamahH7414.

14But the SpiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 departedH5493 from SaulH7586, and an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from the LORDH3068 troubledH1204 him.8 15And Saul’sH7586 servantsH5650 saidH559 to him, Behold now, an evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 troublethH1204 thee. 16Let our lordH113 now commandH559 thy servantsH5650, who are beforeH6440 thee, to seekH1245 a manH376, who is a skilfulH3045 playerH5059 on an harpH3658: and it shall come to pass, when the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from GodH430 is upon thee, that he shall playH5059 with his handH3027, and thou shalt be wellH2895. 17And SaulH7586 saidH559 to his servantsH5650, ProvideH7200 me now a manH376 that can playH5059 wellH3190, and bringH935 him to me. 18Then answeredH6030 oneH259 of the servantsH5288, and saidH559, Behold, I have seenH7200 a sonH1121 of JesseH3448 the BethlehemiteH1022, that is skilfulH3045 in playingH5059, and a mightyH1368 valiant manH2428, and a manH376 of warH4421, and prudentH995 in mattersH1697, and a handsomeH8389 personH376, and the LORDH3068 is with him.9 19Therefore SaulH7586 sentH7971 messengersH4397 to JesseH3448, and saidH559, SendH7971 to me DavidH1732 thy sonH1121, who is with the sheepH6629. 20And JesseH3448 tookH3947 a donkeyH2543 laden with breadH3899, and a bottleH4997 of wineH3196, and aH259 kidH1423H5795, and sentH7971 them byH3027 DavidH1732 his sonH1121 to SaulH7586. 21And DavidH1732 cameH935 to SaulH7586, and stoodH5975 beforeH6440 him: and he lovedH157 him greatlyH3966; and he became his armourbearerH5375H3627. 22And SaulH7586 sentH7971 to JesseH3448, sayingH559, Let DavidH1732, I pray thee, standH5975 beforeH6440 me; for he hath foundH4672 favourH2580 in my sightH5869. 23And it came to pass, when the evil spiritH7307 from GodH430 was upon SaulH7586, that DavidH1732 tookH3947 an harpH3658, and playedH5059 with his handH3027: so SaulH7586 was refreshedH7304, and was wellH2895, and the evilH7451 spiritH7307 departedH5493 from him.
