2 Samuel 13
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass after this, that AbsalomH53 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 having a beautifulH3303 sisterH269, whose nameH8034 was TamarH8559, AmnonH550 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 lovedH157 her. 2And AmnonH550 was so vexed, that he fell sickH2470 for his sisterH269 TamarH8559; for she was a virginH1330; and it seemed difficultH6381 for AmnonH550 to do the least thing to her. 3And AmnonH550 had a friendH7453 whose nameH8034 was JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093 David's brotherH251; and JonadabH3122 was a veryH3966 shrewd manH376. 4And he saidH559 to him, WhyH4069 dost thou, the king's sonH1121, get thinner from morningH1242 to morningH1242? Wilt thou not tellH5046 me? And AmnonH550 saidH559 to him, I loveH157 TamarH8559, my brotherH251 Absalom's sisterH269. 5And JonadabH3082 saidH559 to him, LayH7901 thee downH7901 on thy bedH4904 and feign thyself sickH2470; and whenH834 thy fatherH1 comesH935 to seeH7200 thee, sayH559 to him, I pray thee, let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935, and give me foodH3899, and dress the foodH3899 in my sight, that I may seeH7200 it, and eatH398 it from her handH3027. 6So AmnonH550 layH7901 downH7901 and feigned himself sickH2470; and the kingH4428 cameH935 to seeH7200 him, and AmnonH550 saidH559 to the kingH4428, I pray thee, let TamarH8559 my sisterH269 comeH935, and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eatH1262 from her handH3027. 7And DavidH1732 sentH7971 home to TamarH8559, sayingH559, GoH7971, I pray thee, to thy brotherH251 Amnon's houseH1004, and dress him foodH1279. 8And TamarH8559 went to her brotherH251 Amnon's houseH1004; and he had lainH7901 downH7901. And she tookH3947 flour and kneadedH3888 it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. 9And she tookH3947 the pan, and pouredH3332 them out before him; but he refusedH3985 to eatH398. And AmnonH550 saidH559, Put every manH376 out from me. And they wentH3318 out every manH376 from him. 10And AmnonH550 saidH559 to TamarH8559, BringH935 the dish into the chamberH2315, that I may eatH1262 of thy handH3027. And TamarH8559 tookH3947 the cakes that she had madeH6213, and broughtH935 them into the chamberH2315 to AmnonH550 her brotherH251. 11And she presented them to him to eatH398; and he tookH2388 holdH2388 of her, and saidH559 to her, ComeH935, lieH7901 with me, my sisterH269. 12And she saidH559 to him, No, my brotherH251, do not humble me; for no such thing is done in IsraelH3478: do not this infamy. 13And I, whither shall I carry my reproachH2781? and thou wouldest beH1961 as oneH259 of the infamous in IsraelH3478. And nowH6258, I pray thee, speakH1696 to the kingH4428; for he will not withholdH4513 me from thee. 14But he wouldH14 not hearken to her voiceH6963, and was strongerH2388 than she, and humbled her and layH7901 with her. 15And AmnonH550 hatedH8130 her with an exceeding greatH1419 hatredH8135, for the hatredH8135 with which he hatedH8130 her was greaterH1419 than the loveH157 with which he had lovedH157 her. And AmnonH550 saidH559 to her, AriseH6965, be gone. 16And she saidH559 to him, There is no cause for this evilH7451 in sendingH7971 me awayH7971, [which] is greaterH1419 than the otherH312 that thou didst to me. But he wouldH14 not hearken to her. 17Then he calledH7121 his youngH5288 manH5288 that attended upon him, and saidH559, Put now this [woman] out from me, and bolt the doorH1817 after her. 18Now she had a vest of many colours upon her; for soH3651 were the king's daughtersH1323 that were virginsH1330 apparelled. And his attendant broughtH3318 her out, and bolted the doorH1817 after her. 19And TamarH8559 putH7760 ashesH665 on her headH7218, and rent her vest of many colours which was on her, and laid her handH3027 on her headH7218, and wentH1980 away, cryingH2199 out as she wentH1980. 20And AbsalomH53 her brotherH251 saidH559 to her, Has AmnonH550 thy brotherH251 beenH1961 with thee? and nowH6258, my sisterH269, beH1961 still: he is thy brotherH251; take not this thingH1697 to heartH3820. And TamarH8559 remainedH3427, and [that] desolateH8076, in her brotherH251 Absalom's houseH1004. 21And kingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085 of all these thingsH1697, and he was veryH3966 angryH2734. 22And AbsalomH53 spokeH1696 to AmnonH550 neither goodH2896 nor badH7451; for AbsalomH53 hatedH8130 AmnonH550, because he had humbled his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 23And it came to pass after two full yearsH8141, that AbsalomH53 had sheepshearers in Baal-Hazor, which is beside EphraimH669; and AbsalomH53 invited all the king's sonsH1121. 24And AbsalomH53 cameH935 to the kingH4428, and saidH559, Behold, now, thy servantH5650 has sheepshearers; let the kingH4428, I pray thee, and his servantsH5650 goH935 with thy servantH5650. 25And the kingH4428 saidH559 to AbsalomH53, No, my sonH1121, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to thee. And he urged him, but he wouldH14 not go; and he blessedH1288 him. 26And AbsalomH53 saidH559, If not, I pray thee, let my brotherH251 AmnonH550 go with us. And the kingH4428 saidH559 to him, WhyH4100 should he go with thee? 27But AbsalomH53 pressed him; and he let AmnonH550 and all the king's sonsH1121 goH7971 with him. 28And AbsalomH53 commandedH6680 his servantsH5288, sayingH559, Mark ye now when Amnon's heartH3820 is merry with wineH3196, and when I sayH559 to you, Smite AmnonH550; then slay him, fearH3372 not: have not I commandedH6680 you? beH1961 courageous, and beH1961 valiant. 29And the servantsH5288 of AbsalomH53 did to AmnonH550 as AbsalomH53 had commandedH6680. Then all the king's sonsH1121 aroseH6965, and they rodeH7392 each upon his muleH6505 and fledH5127. 30And it cameH935 to pass, while they wereH1961 in the wayH1870, that tidings cameH935 to DavidH1732, sayingH559, AbsalomH53 has smitten all the king's sonsH1121, and there is not oneH259 of them leftH3498. 31Then the kingH4428 aroseH6965, and rent his garmentsH899, and layH7901 on the earthH776; and all his servantsH5650 stoodH5324 by with their garmentsH899 rent. 32And JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093 David's brotherH251, answered and saidH559, Let not my lordH113 suppose that they have slain all the youngH5288 menH5288 the king's sonsH1121; for AmnonH550 onlyH905 is deadH4191; for by the appointment of AbsalomH53 this has beenH1961 determined from the dayH3117 that he humbled his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 33And nowH6258 let not my lordH113 the kingH4428 take the thingH1697 to heartH3820, to sayH559, All the king's sonsH1121 are deadH4191; for AmnonH550 onlyH905 is deadH4191. 34And AbsalomH53 fledH1272. And the youngH5288 manH5288 that watched liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869 and lookedH7200, and behold, there cameH1980 muchH7227 peopleH5971 from the wayH1870 behind him, from the hill-side. 35And JonadabH3122 saidH559 to the kingH4428, Behold, the king's sonsH1121 comeH935: as thy servantH5650 saidH559, so it is. 36And as soon as he had endedH3615 speakingH1696, behold, the king's sonsH1121 cameH935, and liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963 and weptH1058; and the kingH4428 alsoH1571 and all his servantsH5650 weptH1058 veryH3966 bitterly. 37And AbsalomH53 fledH1272, and went to TalmaiH8526, the sonH1121 of Ammihud, kingH4428 of GeshurH1650. And [David] mournedH56 for his sonH1121 every dayH3117. 38Now AbsalomH53 fledH1272, and went to GeshurH1650, and wasH1961 there threeH7969 yearsH8141. 39And kingH4428 DavidH1732 longed to goH3318 forthH3318 to AbsalomH53; for he was comfortedH5162 concerning AmnonH550, seeing he was deadH4191.
