2 Samuel 13

1And it came to pass after this, that AbsalomH53 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 had a fair sisterH269, whose nameH8034 was TamarH8559; and AmnonH550 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 lovedH157 her. 2And AmnonH550 was so vexed that he fell sickH2470 because of his sisterH269 TamarH8559; for she was a virginH1330; and it seemed hardH6381 to AmnonH550 to do anythingH3972 unto her. 3But AmnonH550 had a friendH7453, whose nameH8034 was JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093, David’s brotherH251: and JonadabH3122 was a veryH3966 subtle manH376. 4And he saidH559 unto him, WhyH4069, O sonH1121 of the kingH4428, art thou thusH3602 lean from day to day? wilt thou not tellH5046 me? And AmnonH550 saidH559 unto him, I loveH157 TamarH8559, my brotherH251 Absalom’s sisterH269. 5And JonadabH3082 saidH559 unto him, LayH7901 thee downH7901 on thy bedH4904, and feign thyself sickH2470: and whenH834 thy fatherH1 cometh to seeH7200 thee, sayH559 unto him, Let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935, I pray thee, and give me breadH3899 to eatH398, and dress the foodH3899 in my sight, that I may seeH7200 it, and eatH398 it from her handH3027. 6So AmnonH550 layH7901 downH7901, and feigned himself sickH2470: and when the kingH4428 was comeH935 to seeH7200 him, AmnonH550 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, Let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eatH1262 from her handH3027.

7Then DavidH1732 sentH7971 home to TamarH8559, sayingH559, GoH7971 now to thy brotherH251 Amnon’s houseH1004, and dress him foodH1279. 8So TamarH8559 went to her brotherH251 Amnon’s houseH1004; and he was laidH7901 downH7901. And she tookH3947 doughH1217, and kneadedH3888 it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes. 9And she tookH3947 the pan, and pouredH3332 them out before him; but he refusedH3985 to eatH398. And AmnonH550 saidH559, Have out all menH376 from me. And they wentH3318 out every manH376 from him. 10And AmnonH550 saidH559 unto TamarH8559, BringH935 the foodH1279 into the chamberH2315, that I may eatH1262 from thy handH3027. And TamarH8559 tookH3947 the cakes which she had madeH6213, and broughtH935 them into the chamberH2315 to AmnonH550 her brotherH251. 11And when she had broughtH935 them near unto him to eatH398, he tookH2388 holdH2388 of her, and saidH559 unto her, ComeH935, lieH7901 with me, my sisterH269. 12And she answered him, Nay, my brotherH251, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in IsraelH3478: do not thou this follyH5039. 13And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt beH1961 as oneH259 of the foolsH5036 in IsraelH3478. NowH6258 thereforeH6258, I pray thee, speakH1696 unto the kingH4428; for he will not withholdH4513 me from thee. 14Howbeit he wouldH14 not hearken unto her voiceH6963; but being strongerH2388 than she, he forced her, and layH7901 with her.

15Then AmnonH550 hatedH8130 her with exceeding greatH1419 hatredH8135; for the hatredH8135 wherewith he hatedH8130 her was greaterH1419 than the loveH157 wherewith he had lovedH157 her. And AmnonH550 saidH559 unto her, AriseH6965, be gone. 16And she saidH559 unto him, Not so, because this greatH1419 wrong in putting me forthH7971 is worseH7451 than the otherH312 that thou didst unto me. But he wouldH14 not hearken unto her. 17Then he calledH7121 his servantH5288 that ministered unto him, and saidH559, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the doorH1817 after her. 18And she had a garmentH3801 of divers colors upon her; for with such robesH4598 were the king’sH4428 daughtersH1323 that were virginsH1330 apparelled. Then his servantH8334 broughtH3318 her out, and bolted the doorH1817 after her. 19And TamarH8559 putH7760 ashesH665 on her headH7218, and rent her garmentH3801 of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her handH3027 on her headH7218, and wentH1980 her way, cryingH2199 aloud as she wentH1980.

20And AbsalomH53 her brotherH251 saidH559 unto her, Hath AmnonH550 thy brotherH251 beenH1961 with thee? but nowH6258 hold thy peace, my sisterH269: he is thy brotherH251; take not this thingH1697 to heartH3820. So TamarH8559 remainedH3427 desolateH8076 in her brotherH251 Absalom’s houseH1004. 21But when kingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085 of all these thingsH1697, he was veryH3966 wroth. 22And AbsalomH53 spake unto AmnonH550 neither goodH2896 nor badH7451; for AbsalomH53 hatedH8130 AmnonH550, because he had forced his sisterH269 TamarH8559.

23And it came to pass after two full yearsH8141, that AbsalomH53 had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside EphraimH669: and AbsalomH53 invited all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121. 24And AbsalomH53 cameH935 to the kingH4428, and saidH559, Behold now, thy servantH5650 hath sheep-shearers; let the kingH4428, I pray thee, and his servantsH5650 goH935 with thy servantH5650. 25And the kingH4428 saidH559 to AbsalomH53, Nay, my sonH1121, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he wouldH14 not go, but blessedH1288 him. 26Then saidH559 AbsalomH53, If not, I pray thee, let my brotherH251 AmnonH550 go with us. And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto him, WhyH4100 should he go with thee? 27But AbsalomH53 pressed him, and he let AmnonH550 and all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 goH7971 with him. 28And AbsalomH53 commandedH6680 his servantsH5288, sayingH559, Mark ye now, when Amnon’s heartH3820 is merry with wineH3196; and when I sayH559 unto you, Smite AmnonH550, then killH4191 him; fearH3372 not; have not I commandedH6680 you? beH1961 courageous, and beH1961 valiant. 29And the servantsH5288 of AbsalomH53 did unto AmnonH550 as AbsalomH53 had commandedH6680. Then all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 aroseH6965, and every manH376 gat him up upon his muleH6505, and fledH5127.

30And it cameH935 to pass, while they wereH1961 in the wayH1870, that the tidings cameH935 to DavidH1732, sayingH559, AbsalomH53 hath slain all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and there is not oneH259 of them leftH3498. 31Then the kingH4428 aroseH6965, and rent his garmentsH899, and layH7901 on the earthH776; and all his servantsH5650 stoodH5324 by with their clothesH899 rent. 32And JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093, David’s brotherH251, answered and saidH559, Let not my lordH113 suppose that they have killedH4191 all the youngH5288 menH5288 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121; for AmnonH550 onlyH905 is deadH4191: for by the appointment of AbsalomH53 this hath beenH1961 determined from the dayH3117 that he forced his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 33NowH6258 thereforeH6258 let not my lordH113 the kingH4428 take the thingH1697 to his heartH3820, to think that all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 are deadH4191; for AmnonH550 onlyH905 is deadH4191.

34But AbsalomH53 fledH1272. And the youngH5288 manH5288 that kept the watchH6822 liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869, and lookedH7200, and, behold, there cameH1980 muchH7227 peopleH5971 by the wayH1870 of the hill-side behind him. 35And JonadabH3122 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, Behold, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 are comeH935: as thy servantH5650 saidH559, so it is. 36And it cameH935 to pass, as soon as he had made an endH3615 of speakingH1696, that, behold, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 cameH935, and liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963, and weptH1058: and the kingH4428 alsoH1571 and all his servantsH5650 weptH1058 veryH3966 sore.

37But AbsalomH53 fledH1272, and went to TalmaiH8526 the sonH1121 of Ammihur, kingH4428 of GeshurH1650. And David mournedH56 for his sonH1121 every dayH3117. 38So AbsalomH53 fledH1272, and went to GeshurH1650, and wasH1961 there threeH7969 yearsH8141. 39And the soul of kingH4428 DavidH1732 longed to goH3318 forthH3318 unto AbsalomH53: for he was comfortedH5162 concerning AmnonH550, seeing he was deadH4191.
