2 Samuel 13

Amnon and Tamar

1Now it was afterH310 thisH3651 that 1AbsalomH53 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 had a beautifulH3303 sisterH269 whose nameH8034 was 2TamarH8559, and 3AmnonH550 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 lovedH157 her. 2AmnonH550 was so frustratedH6887 becauseH5668 of his sisterH269 TamarH8559 that he madeH2470 himself illH2470, for she was a virginH1330, and it seemedH6381 4hardH6381 to AmnonH550 to doH6213 anythingH3972 to her. 3But AmnonH550 had a friendH7453 whose nameH8034 was JonadabH3082, the sonH1121 of 56ShimeahH8093, David’sH1732 brotherH251; and JonadabH3082 was a veryH3966 shrewdH2450 manH376. 4He saidH559 to him, “O sonH1121 of the kingH4428, whyH4069 are you soH3602 depressedH1800 morningH1242 after morningH1242? Will you not tellH5046 me?” Then AmnonH550 saidH559 to him, “I am in loveH157 with TamarH8559, the sisterH269 of my brotherH251 AbsalomH53.” 5JonadabH3082 then saidH559 to him, “LieH7901 downH7901 on your bedH4904 and pretendH2470 to be illH2470; when your fatherH1 comesH935 to seeH7200 you, sayH559 to him, ‘PleaseH4994 let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935 and give me some foodH3899 to eatH1262, and let her prepareH6213 the foodH1279 in my sightH5869, that I may seeH7200 it and eatH398 from her handH3027.’” 6So AmnonH550 layH7901 downH7901 and pretendedH2470 to be illH2470; when the kingH4428 cameH935 to seeH7200 him, AmnonH550 saidH559 to the kingH4428, “PleaseH4994 let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935 and 7makeH3823 me a coupleH8147 of cakesH3834 in my sightH5869, that I may eatH1262 from her handH3027.”

7Then DavidH1732 sentH7971 to the houseH1004 for TamarH8559, sayingH559, “GoH1980 nowH4994 to your brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 houseH1004, and prepareH6213 foodH1279 for him.” 8So TamarH8559 wentH1980 to her brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 houseH1004, and he was lyingH7901 downH7901. And she tookH3947 doughH1217, kneadedH3888 it, madeH3823 cakesH3823 in his sightH5869, and bakedH1310 the cakesH3834. 9She tookH3947 the panH4958 and 8dishedH3332 them out beforeH6440 him, but he refusedH3985 to eatH398. And AmnonH550 saidH559, “9Have everyoneH3605H376 goH3318 out from me.” So everyoneH3605H376 wentH3318 out from him. 10Then AmnonH550 saidH559 to TamarH8559, “BringH935 the foodH1279 into the 10bedroomH2315, that I may eatH1262 from your handH3027.” So TamarH8559 tookH3947 the cakesH3834 whichH834 she had madeH6213 and broughtH935 them into the bedroomH2315 to her brotherH251 AmnonH550. 11When she broughtH5066 them to him to eatH398, he 11tookH2388 holdH2388 of her and saidH559 to her, “ComeH935, lieH7901 with me, my sisterH269.” 12But she answeredH559 him, “NoH408, my brotherH251, do not violateH6031 me, for 12suchH3651 a thingH3651 is not doneH6213 in IsraelH3478; do not doH6213 thisH2088 13disgracefulH5039 thingH5039! 13As for me, whereH575 could I 14getH1980 ridH1980 of my reproachH2781? And as for you, you will be like oneH259 of the 15foolsH5036 in IsraelH3478. NowH6258 therefore, pleaseH4994 speakH1696 to the kingH4428, for 16he will not withholdH4513 me from you.” 14However, he wouldH14 not listenH8085 to 17her; since he was strongerH2388 thanH4480 she, he 18violatedH6031 her and layH7901 with her.

15Then AmnonH550 hatedH8130 her with a veryH3966 greatH1419 hatredH8135; for the hatredH8135 with whichH834 he hatedH8130 her was greaterH1419 thanH4480 the loveH160 with whichH834 he had lovedH157 her. And AmnonH550 saidH559 to her, “GetH6965 up, goH1980 away!” 16But she saidH559 to him, “NoH408, becauseH182 thisH2088 wrongH7463 in sendingH7971 me awayH7971 is greaterH1419 thanH4480 the otherH312 that you have doneH6213 to me!” Yet he wouldH14 not listenH8085 to her. 17Then he calledH7121 his youngH5288 manH5288 who attendedH8334 him and saidH559, “NowH4994 throwH7971 thisH2088 womanH2088 out of my presence, and lockH5274 the doorH1817 behindH310 her.” 18Now she had on 19a 20long-sleevedH6446 garmentH3801; for in thisH3651 mannerH3651 the virginH1330 daughtersH1323 of the kingH4428 dressedH3847 themselves in robesH4598. Then his attendantH8334 tookH3318 her out and lockedH5274 the doorH1817 behindH310 her. 1921TamarH8559 putH3947 22ashesH665 on her headH7218 and 23toreH7167 her 24long-sleevedH6446 garmentH3801 whichH834 was on her; and 25she putH7760 her handH3027 on her headH7218 and wentH1980 away, cryingH2199 aloudH2199 as she wentH1980.

20Then AbsalomH53 her brotherH251 saidH559 to her, “Has AmnonH550 your brotherH251 beenH1961 with you? But nowH6258 keepH2790 silentH2790, my sisterH269, he is your brotherH251; do not takeH7896 thisH2088 matterH1697 to heartH3820.” So TamarH8559 remainedH3427 and was desolateH8074 in her brotherH251 Absalom’sH53 houseH1004. 21Now when KingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085 of allH3605 theseH428 mattersH1697, he was veryH3966 angryH2734. 22But AbsalomH53 did not speakH1696 to AmnonH550 26eitherH5704 goodH2896 orH5704 badH7451; for 27AbsalomH53 hatedH8130 AmnonH550 becauseH5921H1697H834 he had violatedH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559.

23Now it cameH1961 about after two fullH3117 yearsH8141 that AbsalomH53 28hadH1961 sheepshearersH1494 in Baal-hazorH1178, whichH834 is nearH5973 EphraimH669, and AbsalomH53 invitedH7121 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121.

Absalom Avenges Tamar

24AbsalomH53 cameH935 to the kingH4428 and saidH559, “BeholdH2009 nowH4994, your servantH5650 has sheepshearersH1494; pleaseH4994 let the kingH4428 and his servantsH5650 goH1980 with your servantH5650.” 25But the kingH4428 saidH559 to AbsalomH53, “NoH408, my sonH1121, we should not allH3605 goH1980, for we will be burdensomeH3513 to you.” Although he 29urgedH6555 him, he wouldH14 not goH1980, but blessedH1288 him. 26Then 30AbsalomH53 saidH559, “If not, pleaseH4994 let my brotherH251 AmnonH550 goH1980 with us.” And the kingH4428 saidH559 to him, “WhyH4100 should he goH1980 with you?” 27But when AbsalomH53 31urgedH6555 him, he letH7971 AmnonH550 and allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 goH7971 with him.

28AbsalomH53 commandedH6680 his servantsH5288, sayingH559, “SeeH7200 nowH4994, 32when Amnon’sH550 heartH3820 is merryH2895 with wineH3196, and when I sayH559 to you, ‘StrikeH5221 AmnonH550,’ then putH4191 him to deathH4191. Do not fearH3372; have not I myselfH595 commandedH6680 you? Be courageousH2388 and be 33valiantH1121H2428.” 29The servantsH5288 of AbsalomH53 didH6213 to AmnonH550 justH3512 as AbsalomH53 had commandedH6680. Then allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 aroseH6965 and eachH376 mountedH7392 34his muleH6505 and fledH5127.

30Now it was while they were on the wayH1870 that the reportH8052 cameH935 to DavidH1732, sayingH559, “AbsalomH53 has struckH5221 downH5221 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and not oneH259 of them is leftH3498.” 31Then the kingH4428 aroseH6965, 35toreH7167 his clothesH899 and 36layH7901 on the groundH776; and allH3605 his servantsH5650 were standingH5324 by with clothesH899 tornH7167. 3237JonadabH3082, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093, David’sH1732 brotherH251, 38respondedH6030H559, “Do not let my lordH113 39supposeH559 they have putH4191 to deathH4191 allH3605 the youngH5288 menH5288, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, for AmnonH550 aloneH905 is deadH4191; becauseH3588 by the 40intentH6310 of AbsalomH53 this has beenH1961 determinedH7760 sinceH4480 the dayH3117 that he violatedH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 33NowH6258 therefore, do not let my lordH113 the kingH4428 41takeH7760 the reportH1697 to 42heartH3820, namelyH559, ‘allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 are deadH4191,’ for onlyH905 AmnonH550 is deadH4191.”

34Now 43AbsalomH53 had fledH1272. And 44the youngH5288 manH5288 who was the watchmanH6822 raisedH5375 his eyesH5869 and lookedH7200, and beholdH2009, manyH7227 peopleH5971 were comingH1980 from the roadH1870 behindH310 him by the sideH6654 of the mountainH2022. 35JonadabH3082 saidH559 to the kingH4428, “BeholdH2009, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 have comeH935; according to your servant’sH5650 wordH1697, soH3651 it happenedH1961.” 36As soon as he had finishedH3615 speakingH1696, beholdH2009, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 cameH935 and liftedH5375 their voicesH6963 and weptH1058; and alsoH1571 the kingH4428 and allH3605 his servantsH5650 weptH1058 45veryH3966 bitterlyH1419H1065.

37Now 46AbsalomH53 fledH1272 and wentH1980 to 47TalmaiH8526 the sonH1121 of AmmihudH5989, the kingH4428 of 48GeshurH1650. And David mournedH56 for his sonH1121 everyH3605 dayH3117. 3849So AbsalomH53 had fledH1272 and goneH1980 to GeshurH1650, and was thereH8033 threeH7969 yearsH8141. 39The heart of KingH4428 DavidH1732 longedH3615 to goH3318 out to AbsalomH53; for 50he was comfortedH5162 concerningH5921 AmnonH550, sinceH3588 he was deadH4191.
