2 Samuel 11
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass, at the returnH8666 of the yearH8141, at the timeH6256 when kingsH4428 goH3318 forthH3318, that DavidH1732 sentH7971 JoabH3097, and his servantsH5650 with him, and all IsraelH3478; and they laid waste the [land of the] children of AmmonH5983, and besieged RabbahH7237. But DavidH1732 abode at JerusalemH3389. 2And it came to pass at eveningH6153 timeH6256 that DavidH1732 aroseH6965 from off his couch, and walkedH1980 upon the roofH1406 of the king's houseH1004; and from the roofH1406 he sawH7200 a womanH802 bathingH7364, and the womanH802 wasH1961 veryH3966 beautiful; 3and DavidH1732 sentH7971 and inquired after the womanH802. And one saidH559, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughterH1323 of EliamH463, the wifeH802 of Urijah the HittiteH2850? 4And DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397, and tookH3947 her; and she cameH935 in to him, and he layH7901 with her; and she had purified herself from her uncleannessH2932; and she returnedH7725 to her houseH1004. 5And the womanH802 conceivedH2029, and sentH7971 and toldH5046 DavidH1732, and saidH559, I am with child. 6And DavidH1732 sentH7971 to JoabH3097 [saying], SendH7971 me Urijah the HittiteH2850. And JoabH3097 sentH7971 Urijah to DavidH1732. 7And when Urijah had comeH935 to him, DavidH1732 askedH7592 how JoabH3097 prospered, and how the peopleH5971 prospered, and how the warH4421 prospered. 8And DavidH1732 saidH559 to Urijah, GoH3318 down to thy houseH1004 and washH7364 thy feetH7272. And Urijah departed out of the king's houseH1004, and there followed him presents from the kingH4428. 9And Urijah slept at the entranceH6607 of the king's houseH1004 with all the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, and wentH3381 not downH3381 to his houseH1004. 10And they had toldH5046 DavidH1732 sayingH559, Urijah did not goH935 down to his houseH1004; and DavidH1732 saidH559 to Urijah, Art thou not comeH935 from a journeyH1870? whyH4069 didst thou not goH935 down to thy houseH1004? 11And Urijah saidH559 to DavidH1732, The arkH727, and IsraelH3478, and JudahH3063 abide in boothsH5521; and my lordH113 JoabH3097, and the servantsH5650 of my lordH113, are encampedH2583 in the open fieldsH7704: shall I then goH935 into my houseH1004, to eatH398 and to drinkH8354, and to lieH7901 with my wifeH802? [As] thou livest, and [as] thy soulH5315 liveth, I will not do this thingH1697. 12And DavidH1732 saidH559 to Urijah, Abide hereH2088 to-day alsoH1571, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. And Urijah abode in JerusalemH3389 that dayH3117 and the morrow. 13And DavidH1732 invited him, and he ateH398 and drankH8354 before him; and he made him drunkH7937. And in the eveningH6153 he wentH3318 out to lieH7901 on his couch with the servantsH5650 of his lordH113, but did not goH3318 down to his houseH1004. 14And it came to pass in the morningH1242, that DavidH1732 wroteH3789 a letterH5612 to JoabH3097, and sentH7971 it by Urijah. 15And he wroteH3789 in the letterH5612 sayingH559, Set Urijah in the front of the thickest fight, and withdraw from him, that he may be smitten and dieH4191. 16And it came to pass as JoabH3097 watchedH8104 the cityH5892, that he assigned Urijah to a placeH4725 whereH834 he knewH3045 that the valiant menH376 were. 17And the menH376 of the cityH5892 wentH3318 out and foughtH3898 with JoabH3097; and there fellH5307 some of the peopleH5971, of the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732; and Urijah the HittiteH2850 diedH4191 alsoH1571. 18Then JoabH3097 sentH7971 and toldH5046 DavidH1732 all the mattersH1697 of the warH4421; 19and charged the messengerH4397, sayingH559, When thou hast endedH3615 telling the mattersH1697 of the warH4421 to the kingH4428, 20and if so beH1961 that the king's wrathH2534 arise, and he sayH559 to thee, WhyH4069 did ye goH5927 so near to the cityH5892 to fightH3898? did ye not knowH3045 that they would shootH3384 from the wallH2346? 21Who smote AbimelechH40 the sonH1121 of Jerubbesheth? did not a womanH802 castH7993 the upperH7393 stone of a handmill from the wallH2346, that he diedH4191 in ThebezH8405? whyH4100 did ye go near the wallH2346? — then sayH559 thou, Thy servantH5650 Urijah the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH1571. 22And the messengerH4397 wentH935; and he cameH935 and toldH5046 DavidH1732 all that JoabH3097 had sentH7971 him for. 23And the messengerH4397 saidH559 to DavidH1732, The menH376 prevailedH1396 against us, and came out against us into the fieldH7704, and we wereH1961 upon them as far as the entranceH6607 of the gateH8179. 24And the shooters shotH3384 from upon the wallH2346 against thy servantsH5650; and some of the king's servantsH5650 are deadH4191, and thy servantH5650 Urijah the HittiteH2850 is deadH4191 alsoH1571. 25Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the messengerH4397, ThusH3541 shalt thou sayH559 to JoabH3097: Let not this thingH1697 displease thee, for the swordH2719 devoursH398 oneH2088 as well as another: makeH2388 thy battleH4421 strongH2388 against the cityH5892, and overthrow it; — and encourageH2388 him. 26And the wifeH802 of Urijah heardH8085 that Urijah her husbandH376 was deadH4191, and she mournedH5594 for her husbandH376. 27And when the mourningH60 wasH1961 past, DavidH1732 sentH7971 and fetched her to his houseH1004, and she became his wifeH802, and boreH3205 him a sonH1121. But the thingH1697 that DavidH1732 had done wasH1961 evilH7489 in the sight of Jehovah.
