2 Samuel 13

1After some timeH1961H310H3651, David’sH1732 sonH1121 AmnonH550 fell in loveH157 with TamarH8559, the beautifulH3303 sisterH269 of David’sH1732 sonH1121 AbsalomH53. 2AmnonH550 was sickH2470 with frustrationH3334 overH5668 his sisterH269 TamarH8559, forH3588 sheH1931 was a virginH1330, and it seemedH5869 implausibleH6381 forH550 him to doH6213 anythingH3972 to her.

3Now AmnonH550 had a friendH7453 namedH8034 JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of David’sH1732 brotherH251 ShimeahH8093.1 JonadabH3122 was a veryH3966 shrewdH2450 manH376, 4and he askedH559 Amnon, “WhyH4069 are youH859, the sonH1121 of the kingH4428, soH3602 depressedH1800 morningH1242 after morningH1242? Won’tH3808 you tellH5046 me?”

AmnonH550 repliedH559, “I amH589 in loveH157 with TamarH8559, my brotherH251 Absalom’sH53 sisterH269.”

5JonadabH3082 toldH559 him, “Lie downH7901 onH5921 your bedH4904 and pretend you are illH2470. When your fatherH1 comesH935 to see youH7200, sayH559 to himH413, ‘PleaseH4994 let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935 and give me somethingH1262 to eatH3899. Let her prepareH6213 it in my sightH5869 soH4616 I may watch herH7200 and eat itH398 from her handH3027.’”

6So AmnonH550 lay downH7901 and feigned illnessH2470. When the kingH4428 cameH935 to see himH7200, AmnonH550 saidH559, “PleaseH4994 let my sisterH269H3823 TamarH8559 comeH935 and make a coupleH8147 of cakesH3834 in my sightH5869, so that I may eatH1262 from her handH3027.”

7Then DavidH1732 sentH7971 word toH413 TamarH8559 at the palaceH1004H559: “PleaseH4994 goH1980 to the houseH1004 of AmnonH550 your brotherH251 and prepareH6213 a mealH1279 for him.”

8So TamarH8559 wentH1980 to the houseH1004 of her brotherH251 AmnonH550, who was lying downH7901. She tookH3947 some doughH1217, kneadedH3888 it, made cakesH3823 in his sightH5869, and bakedH1310 themH3834. 9Then she broughtH3947 the panH4958 and set it downH3332 before himH6440, but he refusedH3985 to eatH398. “Send everyoneH3605H376H5921 awayH3318!” saidH559 AmnonH550. And everyoneH3605H376H5921 went outH3318.

10Then AmnonH550 saidH559 toH413 TamarH8559, “BringH935 the foodH1279 into the bedroomH2315, so that I may eat itH1262 from your handH3027.”

TamarH8559 tookH3947 the cakesH3834 she had madeH6213 and wentH935 to her brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 bedroomH2315. 11And when she had broughtH5066 them to himH413 to eatH398, he took holdH2388 of her and saidH559, “ComeH935 lieH7901 with meH5973, my sisterH269!”

12“NoH408, my brotherH251!” she criedH559. “Do notH408 violate meH6031, forH3588 suchH3651 a thing should neverH3808 be doneH6213 in IsraelH3478. Do notH408 doH6213 thisH2063 disgraceful thingH5039! 13WhereH575 could IH589 ever takeH1980 my shameH2781? And youH859 would beH1961 like oneH259 of the foolsH5036 in IsraelH3478H6258! PleaseH4994 speakH1696 toH413 the kingH4428, forH3588 he will notH3808 withhold meH4513 from youH4480.”

14But Amnon refusedH3808H14 to listen to herH8085H6963, and being strongerH2388H4480, he violated herH6031 and lay withH7901 herH854.

15Then AmnonH550 hatedH8130 Tamar with such intensityH1419H3966 thatH3588 his hatredH8135H8130 was greater thanH1419H8135 the loveH160 he previously hadH157. “Get upH6965!” he saidH559 to her. “Be goneH1980!”

16“NoH408H182,” she repliedH559, “sending me awayH7971 is worse thanH312 thisH2063 greatH1419 wrongH7451 you have already doneH6213 to meH5973!”

But he refusedH3808H14 to listenH8085 to her. 17Instead, he calledH7121 to his attendantH5288H8334 and saidH559, “ThrowH7971H4994 thisH2063H5921 woman outH2351 and boltH5274 the doorH1817 behind herH310!”

18So Amnon’s attendantH8334 threwH3318 herH853 outH2351 and boltedH5274 the doorH1817 behind herH310. Now Tamar was wearingH5921 a robeH3801 of many colorsH6446,2 becauseH3588 this is whatH3651 the king’sH4428 virginH1330H4598 daughtersH1323 woreH3847. 19And TamarH8559 putH3947 ashesH665 onH5921 her headH7218 and toreH7167 herH834 robeH3801. And puttingH7760 her handH3027 onH5921 her headH7218, she went awayH1980 crying aloudH2199.

20Her brotherH251 AbsalomH53 saidH559 to herH413, “Has your brotherH251 AmnonH550 beenH1961 with youH5973? Be quietH2790 for nowH6258, my sisterH269. HeH1931 is your brotherH251. Do notH408 takeH7896 thisH2088 thingH1697 to heartH3820.”

So TamarH8559 livedH3427 as a desolateH8076 woman in the houseH1004 of her brotherH251 AbsalomH53.

21When KingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085 allH3605 thisH428, he was furiousH2734H3966.3 22And AbsalomH53 neverH3808 said a wordH1696 toH5973 AmnonH550, either goodH2896 or badH7451H5704, becauseH3588 heH53 hatedH8130 AmnonH550 forH5921H1697 violatingH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559.

Absalom’s Revenge on Amnon

23Two years laterH8141H3117H1961, when Absalom’sH53 sheepshearersH1178H1494 wereH1961 at Baal-hazorH1178 nearH5973 EphraimH669, he invitedH7121 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428. 24And heH53 wentH935 toH413 the kingH4428 and saidH559, “Your servantH5650 has justH2009 hired shearersH1494. Will the kingH4428 and his servantsH5650 pleaseH4994 comeH1980 withH5973 me?”

25“NoH408, my sonH1121,” the kingH4428 repliedH559, “we should notH408H4994 allH3605 goH1980, orH3808 we would be a burdenH3513 to youH5921.” Although Absalom urgedH6555 him, he was notH3808 willingH14 to goH1980, but gave him his blessingH1288.

26“If notH3808,” saidH559 AbsalomH53, “pleaseH4994 let my brotherH251 AmnonH550 goH1980 with usH854.”

“WhyH4100 should he goH1980 with youH5973?” the kingH4428 askedH559.

27But AbsalomH53 urgedH6555 him, so the king sentH7971H854 AmnonH550 and the restH3605 ofH4428 his sonsH1121.4

28Now AbsalomH53 had orderedH6680 his young menH5288, “WatchH7200 AmnonH550 untilH4994 his heartH3820 is merryH2895 with wineH3196, and when I orderH559 youH413 to strikeH5221 Amnon downH550, you are to kill himH4191. Do notH408 be afraidH3372. HaveH3588 IH595 notH3808 commandedH6680 youH853? Be courageousH2388 andH1961 valiantH2428!”

29So Absalom’sH53 young menH5288 didH6213 to AmnonH550 just asH834 AbsalomH53 had orderedH6680. Then allH3605 the other sonsH1121 of the kingH4428H7392 got upH6965, and each oneH376 fledH5127 onH5921 his muleH6505.

30While theyH1992 wereH1961 on the wayH1870, a reportH8052 reachedH935H413 DavidH1732H559: “AbsalomH53 has struck downH5221 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428; notH3808 oneH259 of them is leftH3498!”

31Then the kingH4428 stood upH6965, toreH7167 his clothesH899, and lay downH7901 on the groundH776. And allH3605 his servantsH5650 stoodH5324 by with their clothesH899 tornH7167.

32But JonadabH3122, the sonH1121 of David’sH1732 brotherH251 ShimeahH8093, spoke upH6030: “My lordH113 must notH408H559 thinkH559 they have killedH4191 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428, forH3588 onlyH905 AmnonH550 is deadH4191. In factH3588, AbsalomH53 has planned thisH7760 since the dayH3117 Amnon violatedH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 33So nowH6258, my lordH113 the kingH4428, do notH408 takeH7760 toH413 heartH3820 the report thatH1697H559 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428 are deadH4191H3588H518. OnlyH905 AmnonH550 is deadH4191.”

Absalom Flees to Geshur

34Meanwhile, AbsalomH53 had fledH1272. When the young manH5288 standing watchH6822 looked upH5375H5869, he sawH7200 manyH7227 peopleH5971 comingH1980 down the roadH1870 west of himH310,5 along the sideH6654 of the hill. And the watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hillH2022.”6

35So JonadabH3122 saidH559 toH413 the kingH4428, “LookH2009, the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428 have arrivedH935! It is just asH3651 your servantH5650H1961 saidH1697.”

36

And as he finishedH3615 speakingH1696H2009, the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428 came inH935, wailingH1058 loudlyH5375H6963. Then the kingH4428 and allH3605 his servantsH5650 alsoH1571 weptH1058H1065 veryH3966 bitterlyH1419.

37Now AbsalomH53 fledH1272 and wentH1980 toH413 TalmaiH8526 sonH1121 of AmmihudH5991, the kingH4428 of GeshurH1650. But David mournedH56 forH5921 his sonH1121 everyH3605 dayH3117.

38After AbsalomH53 had fledH1272 and goneH1980 to GeshurH1650, he stayedH1961 thereH8033 threeH7969 yearsH8141. 39And KingH4428 DavidH17327 longedH3615 to goH3318 toH413 AbsalomH53,8 forH3588 he had been consoledH5162 overH5921 Amnon’sH550H3588 deathH4191.
