2 Samuel 13

Amnon and Tamar

1Now it was afterH310 thisH3651 that 1AbsalomH53 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 had a beautifulH3303 sisterH269 whose nameH8034 was 2TamarH8559, and 3AmnonH550 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 was in loveH157 with her. 2But AmnonH550 wasH6887 so frustratedH6887 on accountH5668 of his sisterH269 TamarH8559 that he madeH2470 himself illH2470, forH3588 she was a virginH1330, and it 4seemedH6381H5869 tooH6381 difficultH6381 to AmnonH550 to doH6213 anythingH3972 to her. 3But AmnonH550 had a friendH7453 whose nameH8034 was JonadabH3082, the sonH1121 of 56ShimeahH8093, David’sH1732 brotherH251; and JonadabH3082 was a veryH3966 cleverH2450 manH376. 4And he saidH559 to him, “WhyH4069 are you, the king’sH4428 sonH1121, soH3602 depressedH1800 morningH1242 after morningH1242? Will you not tellH5046 me?” So AmnonH550 saidH559 to him, “I am in loveH157 with TamarH8559, the sisterH269 of my brotherH251 AbsalomH53.” 5JonadabH3082 then saidH559 to him, “LieH7901 downH7901 on your bedH4904 and pretendH2470 toH2470 beH2470 illH2470; when your fatherH1 comesH935 to seeH7200 you, sayH559 to him, ‘PleaseH4994 have my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935 and give me foodH3899 to eatH1262, and have her prepareH6213 the 7foodH1279 in my sightH5869, soH4616 thatH4616 I may seeH7200 it and eatH398 from her handH3027.’” 6So AmnonH550 layH7901 downH7901 and pretendedH2470 toH2470 beH2470 illH2470; when the kingH4428 cameH935 to seeH7200 him, AmnonH550 saidH559 to the kingH4428, “PleaseH4994 have my sisterH269 TamarH8559 comeH935 and 8makeH3823 me a coupleH8147 of pastriesH3834 in my sightH5869, so that I may eatH1262 from her handH3027.”

7Then DavidH1732 sentH7971 a messenger to the houseH1004 for TamarH8559, sayingH559, “GoH1980 nowH4994 to your brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 houseH1004, and prepareH6213 9foodH1279 for him.” 8So TamarH8559 wentH1980 to her brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 houseH1004, and he was lyingH7901 in bed. And she tookH3947 doughH1217, kneadedH3888 it, madeH3823 pastriesH3823 in his sightH5869, and bakedH1310 the pastriesH3834. 9Then she tookH3947 the trayH4958 and servedH3332 them to him, but he refusedH3985 to eatH398. And AmnonH550 saidH559, “10Have everyoneH3605H376 leaveH3318 me.” So everyoneH3605H376 leftH3318 him. 10Then AmnonH550 saidH559 to TamarH8559, “BringH935 the foodH1279 into the 11bedroomH2315, so that I may eatH1262 from your handH3027.” So TamarH8559 tookH3947 the pastriesH3834 whichH834 she had madeH6213 and broughtH935 them into the bedroomH2315 to her brotherH251 AmnonH550. 11When she broughtH5066 them to him to eatH398, he 12tookH2388 holdH2388 of her and saidH559 to her, “ComeH935, sleepH7901 with me, my sisterH269.” 12But she saidH559 to him, “NoH408, my brotherH251, do not violateH6031 me, for 13suchH3651 aH3651 thingH3651 is not doneH6213 in IsraelH3478; do not doH6213 thisH2088 14disgracefulH5039 sinH5039! 13As for me, whereH575 could I 15getH1980 ridH1980 of my shameH2781? And as for you, you will be like oneH259 of the 16foolsH5036 in IsraelH3478. NowH6258 then, pleaseH4994 speakH1696 to the kingH4428, for 17he will not 18withholdH4513 me from you.” 14However, he wouldH14 not listenH8085 to 19her; since he was strongerH2388 thanH4480 she, he 20violatedH6031 her and sleptH7901 with her.

15Then AmnonH550 hatedH8130 her with a veryH3966 greatH1419 hatredH8135; indeedH3588, the hatredH8135 with whichH834 he hatedH8130 her was greaterH1419 thanH4480 the loveH160 with whichH834 he had lovedH157 her. And AmnonH550 saidH559 to her, “GetH6965 upH6965, goH1980 away!” 16But she saidH559 to him, “NoH408, becauseH182 thisH2088 wrongH7463 in sendingH7971 me awayH7971 is greaterH1419 thanH4480 the otherH312 that you have doneH6213 to me!” Yet he wouldH14 not listenH8085 to her. 17Then he calledH7121 his youngH5288 manH5288 who attendedH8334 him and saidH559, “NowH4994 throwH7971 thisH2088 womanH2088 outH7971 of my presence, and lockH5274 the doorH1817 behindH310 her!” 18Now she had on 21a 22long-sleevedH6446 garmentH3801; for thisH3651 isH3651 howH3651 the virginH1330 daughtersH1323 of the kingH4428 dressedH3847 themselves in robesH4598. Then his attendantH8334 tookH3318 her outH3318 and lockedH5274 the doorH1817 behindH310 her. 1923TamarH8559 tookH3947 ashesH665 and put them on her headH7218, and 24toreH7167 her 25long-sleevedH6446 garmentH3801 whichH834 was on her; and 26she putH7760 her handH3027 on her headH7218 and wentH1980 on her way, cryingH2199 outH2199 as she wentH1980.

20Then AbsalomH53 her brotherH251 saidH559 to her, “Has AmnonH550 your brotherH251 beenH1961 with you? But nowH6258 keepH2790 silentH2790, my sisterH269, he is your brotherH251; do not takeH7896 thisH2088 matterH1697 to heartH3820.” So TamarH8559 remainedH3427 and wasH8074 isolatedH8074 in her brotherH251 Absalom’sH53 houseH1004. 21Now when KingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085 about allH3605 theseH428 mattersH1697, he becameH2734 veryH3966 angryH2734. 22But AbsalomH53 did not speakH1696 with AmnonH550 27eitherH5704 goodH2896 orH4480 badH7451; for 28AbsalomH53 hatedH8130 AmnonH550 becauseH5921H1697H834 he had violatedH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559.

23Now it cameH1961 aboutH1961 after two fullH3117 yearsH8141 that AbsalomH53 29hadH1961 sheepshearersH1494 in Baal-hazorH1178, whichH834 is nearH5973 EphraimH669, and AbsalomH53 invitedH7121 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 to celebrate.

Absalom Avenges Tamar

24And AbsalomH53 cameH935 to the kingH4428 and saidH559, “BeholdH2009 nowH4994, your servantH5650 has sheepshearersH1494; may the kingH4428 and his servantsH5650 pleaseH4994 goH1980 with your servantH5650.” 25But the kingH4428 saidH559 to AbsalomH53, “NoH408, my sonH1121, we should not allH3605 goH1980, so that we will not beH3513 aH3513 burdenH3513 to you.” Though he urgedH6555 him, he wouldH14 not goH1980; but he blessedH1288 him. 26Then 30AbsalomH53 saidH559, “If not, pleaseH4994 have my brotherH251 AmnonH550 goH1980 with us.” But the kingH4428 saidH559 to him, “WhyH4100 should he goH1980 with you?” 27Nevertheless AbsalomH53 urgedH6555 him, so he letH7971 AmnonH550 and allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 goH7971 with him.

28Then AbsalomH53 commandedH6680 his servantsH5288, sayingH559, “SeeH7200 nowH4994, 31when Amnon’sH550 heartH3820 is cheerfulH2895 with wineH3196, and I sayH559 to you, ‘StrikeH5221 AmnonH550,’ then putH4191 him toH4191 deathH4191. Do not fearH3372; have I not commandedH6680 you myselfH595? BeH2388 courageousH2388 and be 32valiantH1121H2428.” 29And the servantsH5288 of AbsalomH53 didH6213 to AmnonH550 justH3512 asH3512 AbsalomH53 had commandedH6680. Then allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 gotH6965 upH6965 and eachH376 mountedH7392 33his muleH6505 and fledH5127.

30Now it was while they were on the wayH1870 that the reportH8052 cameH935 to DavidH1732, sayingH559, “AbsalomH53 has struckH5221 andH5221 killedH5221 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and not oneH259 of them is leftH3498.” 31Then the kingH4428 stoodH6965 upH6965, 34toreH7167 his clothesH899, and 35layH7901 on the groundH776; and allH3605 his servantsH5650 were standingH5324 by with clothesH899 tornH7167. 3236And JonadabH3082, the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093, David’sH1732 brotherH251, 37respondedH6030H559, “Let my lordH113 not 38assumeH559 that they have putH4191 toH4191 deathH4191 allH3605 the youngH5288 menH5288, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, for onlyH905 AmnonH550 is deadH4191; becauseH3588 this has beenH1961 setH7760 upH7760 by the 39intentH6310 of AbsalomH53 sinceH4480 the dayH3117 that he violatedH6031 his sisterH269 TamarH8559. 33So nowH6258, may my lordH113 the kingH4428 not 40takeH7760 the reportH1697 to 41heartH3820, 42claimingH559, ‘allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 are deadH4191’; but onlyH905 AmnonH550 is deadH4191.”

34Now 43AbsalomH53 had fledH1272. And 44the youngH5288 manH5288 who was the watchmanH6822 raisedH5375 his eyesH5869 and lookedH7200, and beholdH2009, manyH7227 peopleH5971 were comingH1980 from the roadH1870 behindH310 him by the sideH6654 of the mountainH2022. 35And JonadabH3082 saidH559 to the kingH4428, “BeholdH2009, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 have comeH935; soH3651 it has happenedH1961 according to your servant’sH5650 wordH1697.” 36As soon as he had finishedH3615 speakingH1696, beholdH2009, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 cameH935 and raisedH5375 their voicesH6963 and weptH1058; and the kingH4428 and allH3605 his servantsH5650 alsoH1571 weptH1058 45veryH3966 profuselyH1419H1065.

37Now 46AbsalomH53 had fledH1272 and goneH1980 to 47TalmaiH8526 the sonH1121 of AmmihudH5989, the kingH4428 of 48GeshurH1650. And David mournedH56 for his sonH1121 everyH3605 dayH3117. 3849So AbsalomH53 had fledH1272 and goneH1980 to GeshurH1650, and was thereH8033 for threeH7969 yearsH8141. 39And the heart of KingH4428 DavidH1732 longedH3615 to goH3318 outH3318 to AbsalomH53; for 50he was comfortedH5162 regardingH5921 AmnonH550, sinceH3588 he was deadH4191.
