Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

(2 Kings 20:1–11; 2 Chronicles 32:24–31)

1In thoseH1992 daysH3117 HezekiahH2396 became mortallyH4191 illH2470. The prophetH5030 IsaiahH3470 sonH1121 of AmozH531 cameH935 to himH413 and saidH559H413, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: ‘Put your houseH1004 in orderH6680, forH3588 youH859 are about to dieH4191; you will notH3808 recoverH2421.’”

2Then HezekiahH2396 turnedH5437 his faceH6440 toH413 the wallH7023 and prayedH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068, 3sayingH559, “PleaseH577, O LORDH3068, rememberH2142H4994 howH834 I have walkedH1980 before YouH6440 faithfullyH571 and with wholeheartedH3820 devotionH8003; I have doneH6213 what is goodH2896 in Your sightH5869.” And HezekiahH2396H1065 weptH1058 bitterlyH1419.

4And the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 toH413 IsaiahH3470, sayingH559, 5“GoH1980 and tellH559H413 HezekiahH2396 that this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of your fatherH1 DavidH1732, saysH559: ‘I have heardH8085 your prayerH8605; I have seenH7200 your tearsH1832. BeholdH2005, I will addH3254 fifteenH2568H6240 yearsH8141 toH5921 your lifeH3117. 6And I will deliver youH5337 and thisH2063 cityH5892 from the handH3709 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. I will defendH1598H5921 thisH2063 cityH5892.1 7ThisH2088 will be a signH226 to you fromH854 the LORDH3068 thatH834 HeH3068 will doH6213 whatH1697H2088 He has promisedH1696: 8I will makeH7725 the sun’sH8121 shadowH6738 thatH834 fallsH3381 on the stairwayH4609 of AhazH271 go backH322 tenH6235 stepsH4609.’”

So the sunlightH8121 went backH7725 the tenH6235H4609 stepsH4609 it had descendedH3381.

Hezekiah’s Song of Thanksgiving

9This is a writingH4385 by HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 after his illnessH2470 and recoveryH2421H2483:

10IH589 saidH559, “In the primeH18242 of my lifeH3117I must goH1980 through the gatesH8179 of SheolH7585and be deprivedH6485 of the remainderH3499 of my yearsH8141.”11I saidH559, “I will never againH3808 seeH7200 the LORDH3050,even the LORDH3050, in the landH776 of the livingH2416;I will noH3808 longerH5750 look onH5027 mankindH120withH5973 those who dwellH3427 in this worldH2309.12My dwellingH1755 has been picked upH5265 and removedH1540 from meH4480like a shepherd’sH7462 tentH168.I have rolled upH7088 my lifeH2416 like a weaverH707;He cuts me offH1214 from the loomH1803;from dayH3117 untilH5704 nightH3915 You make an end of meH7999.13I composed myselfH77373 untilH5704 the morningH1242.Like a lionH738H3651 He breaksH7665 allH3605 my bonesH6106;from dayH3117 untilH5704 nightH3915 You make an end of meH7999.14I chirpH6850 like a swallowH5483 or craneH5693H3651;I moanH1897 like a doveH3123.My eyesH5869 grow weakH1809 as I look upwardH4791.O LordH136, I am oppressedH6234; be my securityH6148.”
15WhatH4100 can I sayH1696?He has spokenH559 to me, and He HimselfH1931 has done thisH6213.I will walk slowlyH1718 allH3605 my yearsH8141because ofH5921 the anguishH4751 of my soulH5315.16O LordH136, byH5921 such things men liveH2421,and in allH3605 of them my spiritH7307 finds lifeH2416.You have restored me to healthH2492and have let me liveH2421.17SurelyH2009 for my own welfareH7965I had such greatH4751 anguishH4843;but YourH859 loveH2836 has delivered meH5315 from the pitH7845 of oblivionH1097,forH3588 You have castH7993 allH3605 my sinsH2399 behindH310 Your backH1460.18ForH3588 SheolH7585 cannotH3808 thank YouH3034;DeathH4194 cannot praise YouH1984.Those who descendH3381 to the PitH953cannotH3808 hopeH7663 forH413 Your faithfulnessH571.19The livingH2416, only the livingH2416H1931, can thank YouH3034,as I do todayH3644H3117;fathersH1 will tellH3045 their childrenH1121aboutH413 Your faithfulnessH571.20The LORDH3068 will save meH3467;we will play songsH5059 on stringed instrumentsH5058allH3605 the daysH3117 of our livesH2416inH5921 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

21Now IsaiahH3470 had saidH559, “PrepareH5375 a lumpH1690 of pressed figsH8384 and applyH4799 it toH5921 the boilH7822, and he will recoverH2421.”

22And HezekiahH2396 had askedH559, “WhatH4100 will be the signH226 thatH3588 I will go upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068?”
