The Burden against Damascus
(Jeremiah 49:23–27)
1This is the burdenH4853 against DamascusH1834:
“BeholdH2009, DamascusH1834 is no longerH5493 a cityH5892;it has becomeH1961 a heapH4596 of ruinsH4654.2The citiesH5892 of AroerH6177 are forsakenH5800;they will be leftH1961 to the flocksH5739,which will lie downH7257 with no oneH369 to fearH2729.3The fortressH4013 will disappearH7673 from EphraimH669,1and the sovereigntyH4467 from DamascusH1834.The remnantH7605 of AramH758 will beH1961like the splendorH3519 of the IsraelitesH1121H3478,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635.4“InH1961 thatH1931 dayH3117 the splendorH3519 of JacobH3290 will fadeH1809,and the fatH4924 of his bodyH1320 will waste awayH7329,5asH1961 the reaperH7105 gathersH622 the standing grainH7054and harvestsH7114H1961 the earsH7641 with his armH2220,as one gleansH3950 heads of grainH7641in the ValleyH6010 of RephaimH7497.6Yet gleaningsH5955 will remainH7604,like an olive treeH2132 that has been beatenH5363—twoH8147 or threeH7969 berriesH1620 atop the treeH7218H534,fourH702 or fiveH2568 on its fruitfulH6509 branchesH5585,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478.7In thatH1931 dayH3117 menH120 will lookH8159 toH5921 their MakerH6213and turn their eyesH5869 toH413 the HolyH6918 One of IsraelH3478H7200.8They will notH3808 lookH8159 toH413 the altarsH4196they have fashionedH4639 with their handsH3027or to the AsherahsH842 and incense altarsH2553they have madeH6213 with their fingersH676H3808H7200.
9In thatH1931 dayH3117 their strongH4581 citiesH5892will be likeH1961 forsakenH5800 thicketsH2793 and summitsH534,abandonedH5800 to the IsraelitesH1121H3478and to utterH1961 desolationH8077.
10ForH3588 you have forgottenH7911 the GodH430 of your salvationH3468and failedH3808 to rememberH2142 the RockH6697 of your refugeH4581.ThereforeH5921H3651, though you cultivateH5193 delightfulH5282 plotsH5194and set out cuttingsH2232 from exoticH2114 vinesH2156—11though on the dayH3117 you plantH5194you make them growH7735,and on that morningH1242you help your seedH2233 sproutH6524—yet the harvestH7105 will vanishH5067on the dayH3117 of diseaseH2470 and incurableH605 painH3511.
12AlasH1945, the tumultH1995 of manyH7227 peoplesH5971;they rageH1993 like the roaringH1993 seasH3220 and clamoringH7588 nationsH3816;they rumbleH7588 like the crashingH7582 of mightyH3524 watersH4325.13The nationsH3816 rageH7582 like the rushH7588 of manyH7227 watersH4325.He rebukesH1605 them, and they fleeH5127 far awayH4801,drivenH7291 beforeH6440 the windH7307 like chaffH4671 on the hillsH2022,like tumbleweedsH1534 beforeH6440 a galeH5492.14In the eveningH6153, there isH2009 sudden terrorH1091!BeforeH2962 morningH1242, they are no moreH369!ThisH2088 is the portionH2506 of those who loot usH8154and the lotH1486 of those who plunder usH962.
