Isaiah 49

The Servant and Light to the Gentiles

(Acts 13:42–52)

1ListenH8085 to MeH413, O islandsH339;1pay attentionH7181, O distantH7350 peoplesH3816:
The LORDH3068 called MeH7121 from the wombH990;from the bodyH4578 of My motherH517 He named MeH2142H8034.2He madeH7760 My mouthH6310 like a sharpH2299 swordH2719;He hid MeH2244 in the shadowH6738 of His handH3027.He made MeH7760 like a polishedH1305 arrowH2671;He hid MeH5641 in His quiverH827.3He saidH559 to Me, “YouH859 are My ServantH5650, IsraelH3478,in whomH834 I will display My gloryH6286.”
4But IH589 saidH559, “I have laboredH3021 in vainH7385,I have spentH3615 My strengthH3581 in futilityH8414 and vanityH1892;yetH403 My vindicationH4941 is withH854 the LORDH3068,and My rewardH6468 is withH854 My GodH430.”
5And nowH6258 saysH559 the LORDH3068,who formed MeH3335 from the wombH990 to be His ServantH5650,to bring JacobH3290 backH7725 to HimH413,that IsraelH3478H3808 might be gathered to HimH622—for I am honoredH3513 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068,and My GodH430 isH1961 My strengthH5797—6He saysH559: “It is not enoughH7043 for You to beH1961 My ServantH5650,to raise upH6965 the tribesH7626 of JacobH3290,and to restoreH7725 the protectedH5336 ones of IsraelH3478.I will also makeH5414 You a lightH216 for the nationsH1471,to bringH1961 My salvationH3444 toH5704 the endsH7097 of the earthH776.”2
7ThusH3541 saysH559 the LORDH3068,the RedeemerH1350 and Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478,to Him whoH5315 was despisedH959 and abhorredH8581 by the nationH1471,to the ServantH5650 of rulersH4910:
“KingsH4428 will see YouH7200 and riseH6965,and princesH8269 will bow downH7812,because ofH4616 the LORDH3068, whoH834 is faithfulH539,the HolyH6918 One of IsraelH3478, who has chosen YouH977.”

8This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559:

“In the timeH6256 of favorH7522 I will answer YouH6030,and in the dayH3117 of salvationH3444 I will help YouH5826;3I will keep YouH5341 and appoint YouH5414to be a covenantH1285 for the peopleH5971,to restoreH6965 the landH776,to apportionH5157 its desolateH8074 inheritancesH5159,9to sayH559 to the prisonersH631, ‘Come outH3318,’and to thoseH834 in darknessH2822, ‘Show yourselvesH1540.’They will feedH7462 alongH5921 the pathwaysH1870,and find pastureH4830 on everyH3605 barren hillH8205.10They will notH3808 hungerH7456 or thirstH6770,nor willH3808 scorching heatH8273 or sunH8121 beat down on themH5221.4ForH3588 He who has compassion on themH7355 will guide themH5090and lead themH5095 besideH5921 springsH4002 of waterH4325.11I will turnH7760 allH3605 My mountainsH2022 into roadsH1870,and My highwaysH4546 will be raised upH7311.12BeholdH2009, theyH428 will comeH935 from far awayH7350H2009H428,from the northH6828 and from the westH3220,5and fromH428 the landH776 of AswanH5515.6”
13Shout for joyH7442, O heavensH8064; rejoiceH1523, O earthH776;break forthH6476 in songH7440, O mountainsH2022!ForH3588 the LORDH3068 has comfortedH5162 His peopleH5971,and He will have compassionH7355 on His afflicted onesH6041.
14But ZionH6726 saidH559, “The LORDH3068 has forsaken meH5800;the LordH136 has forgotten meH7911!”
15“Can a womanH802 forgetH7911 her nursing childH5764,or lack compassionH7355 for the sonH1121 of her wombH990?Even ifH1571 sheH428 could forgetH7911,I willH595 notH3808 forget youH7911!16BeholdH2005, I have inscribed youH2710 onH5921 the palms of My handsH3709;your wallsH2346 are everH8548 before MeH5048.17Your buildersH11217 hasten backH4116;your destroyersH2040 and wreckersH2717 departH3318 from youH4480.18Lift upH5375 your eyesH5869 and lookH7200 aroundH5439.They allH3605 gather togetherH6908; they comeH935 to you.As surely as IH589 liveH2416,” declaresH5002 the LORDH3068,“you will wear themH3847 allH3605 as jewelryH5716and put them onH7194 like a brideH3618.19ForH3588 your ruinedH2723 and desolate placesH8074and your ravaged landH776H2035will nowH6258 indeedH3588 be too smallH3334 for your peopleH3427,and those who devoured youH1104 will be far awayH7368.20YetH5750 the childrenH1121 of your bereavementH7923will sayH559 in your hearingH241,‘This placeH4725 is too small for usH6862;make roomH5066 for us to live hereH3427.’
21Then you will sayH559 in your heartH3824,‘WhoH4310 has begottenH3205 theseH428 for me?IH589 was bereavedH7909 and barrenH1565;I was exiledH1540 and rejectedH5494.So whoH4310 has reared themH428H1431?LookH2005, IH589 was leftH7604 all aloneH905,soH428 whereH375 did they come fromH1992?’”

22This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559:

“BeholdH2009, I will lift upH5375 My handH3027 toH413 the nationsH1471,and raiseH7311 My bannerH5251 toH413 the peoplesH5971.They will bringH935 your sonsH1121 in their armsH26848and carryH5375 your daughtersH1323 onH5921 their shouldersH3802.23KingsH4428 will beH1961 your foster fathersH539,and their queensH8282 your nursing mothersH3243.They will bowH7812 to you facedownH639H776and lickH3897 the dustH6083 at your feetH7272.Then you will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068;those whoH834 hope in MeH6960 will neverH3808 be put to shameH954.”
24Can the plunderH4455 be snatchedH3947 from the mightyH1368,orH518 the captivesH7628 of a tyrantH66629 be deliveredH4422?

25IndeedH3588, this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559:

“EvenH1571 the captivesH7628 of the mightyH1368 will be taken awayH3947,and the plunderH4455 of the tyrantH6184 will be retrievedH4422;IH595 will contendH7378 withH854 those who contend with youH3401,and IH595 will saveH3467 your childrenH1121.26I will make your oppressorsH3238 eatH398 their own fleshH1320;they will be drunkH7937 on their own bloodH1818, as with wineH6071.Then allH3605 mankindH1320 will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589, the LORDH3068,am your SaviorH3467 and your RedeemerH1350,the MightyH46 One of JacobH3290.”
