Isaiah 37
(2 Kings 19:1–7)
1OnH1961 hearingH8085 this report, KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 toreH7167 his clothesH899, put onH3680 sackclothH8242, and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 2And he sentH7971 EliakimH471 the palaceH1004 administratorH834H5921, ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608, and the leadingH2205 priestsH3548, all wearingH3680 sackclothH8242, toH413 the prophetH5030 IsaiahH3470 sonH1121 of AmozH531 3to tellH559 himH413, “This is whatH3541 HezekiahH2396 saysH559: TodayH3117H2088 is a dayH3117 of distressH6869, rebukeH8433, and disgraceH5007; forH3588 childrenH1121 have comeH935 to the point ofH5704 birthH4866, but there is noH369 strengthH3581 to deliver themH3205. 4PerhapsH194 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 will hearH8085 the wordsH1697 of the RabshakehH7262, whomH834 his masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 has sentH7971 to defyH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430, and He will rebuke himH3198 for the wordsH1697 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 has heardH8085. Therefore lift upH5375 a prayerH8605 forH1157 the remnantH7611 that still survivesH4672.”
5So the servantsH5650 of KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 wentH935 toH413 IsaiahH3470, 6whoH3470 repliedH559, “TellH559H413 your masterH113 that this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: ‘Do notH408 be afraidH3372 ofH6440 the wordsH1697 you have heardH8085, with whichH834 the servantsH5288 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 have blasphemed MeH1442. 7BeholdH2005, I will putH5414 a spiritH7307 in him so that he will hearH8085 a rumorH8052 and returnH7725 toH413 his own landH776, whereH776 I will cause him to fallH5307 by the swordH2719.’”
Sennacherib’s Blasphemous Letter
(2 Kings 19:8–13)
8WhenH3588 the RabshakehH7262 heardH8085 thatH3588 the king of Assyria had leftH5265 LachishH3923, he withdrewH7725 and foundH4672 the kingH4428 fightingH3898 againstH5921 LibnahH3841.
9Now Sennacherib had been warnedH8085 aboutH5921 TirhakahH8640 kingH4428 of CushH3568:1 “He has set outH3318 to fightH3898 against youH854.”
On hearing thisH8085, Sennacherib sentH7971 messengersH4397 toH413 HezekiahH2396, sayingH559, 10“Give this messageH559H3541 toH413 HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063:
‘Do notH408 let your GodH430, in whomH834 youH859 trustH982, deceive youH5377 by sayingH559 that JerusalemH3389 will notH3808 be deliveredH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 11SurelyH2009 youH859 have heardH8085 whatH834 the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have doneH6213 to allH3605 the other countriesH776, devoting them to destructionH2763.2 Will you thenH859 be sparedH5337? 12Did the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 destroyedH7843 by my fathersH1 rescueH5337 those nations—the gods of GozanH1470, HaranH2771, and RezephH7530, and of the peopleH1121 of EdenH5729 in TelassarH8515? 13WhereH346 are the kingsH4428 of HamathH2574, ArpadH774, SepharvaimH5892H5617, HenaH2012, and IvvahH5755?’”
Hezekiah’s Prayer
(2 Kings 19:14–19)
14So HezekiahH2396 receivedH3947 the letterH5612 fromH3027 the messengersH4397, read itH7121, and went upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and spread it outH6566H2396 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 15And HezekiahH2396 prayedH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068H559:
16“O LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, GodH430 of IsraelH3478, enthronedH3427 above the cherubimH3742, YouH859 aloneH905H1931 are GodH430 over allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776. YouH859 madeH6213 the heavensH8064 and the earthH776. 17InclineH5186 Your earH241, O LORDH3068, and hearH8085; openH6491 Your eyesH5869, O LORDH3068, and seeH7200. Listen toH8085 allH3605 the wordsH1697 thatH834 SennacheribH5576 has sentH7971 to defyH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430.
18TrulyH551, O LORDH3068, the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have laid wasteH2717 allH3605 these countriesH776 and their landsH776. 19They have castH5414 their godsH430 into the fireH784 and destroyed themH6, forH3588 theyH1992 were notH3808 godsH430, but onlyH3588H518 woodH6086 and stoneH68—the workH4639 of humanH120 handsH3027.
20And nowH6258, O LORDH3068 our GodH430, save usH3467 from his handH3027, so that allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 thatH3588 YouH859 aloneH905, O LORD, are GodH3068.3”
Sennacherib’s Fall Prophesied
(2 Kings 19:20–34)
21Then IsaiahH3470 sonH1121 of AmozH531 sent a messageH7971 toH413 HezekiahH2396: “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: BecauseH834 you have prayedH6419 to MeH413 concerningH413 SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, 22thisH2088 is the wordH1697 thatH834 the LORDH3068 has spokenH1696 against himH5921:
30And thisH2088 will be a signH226 to you, O Hezekiah:
33SoH3651 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559 aboutH413 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804:
Jerusalem Delivered from the Assyrians
(2 Kings 19:35–37; 2 Chronicles 32:20–23)
36Then the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 went outH3318 and struck downH5221 185,000 menH3967H8084H2568H505 in the campH4264 of the AssyriansH804. When the people got upH79257 the next morningH1242, thereH2009 were allH3605 the deadH4191 bodiesH6297!
37So SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 broke campH5265 and withdrewH1980. He returnedH7725 to NinevehH5210 and stayed thereH3427. 38One dayH1961, while heH1931 was worshipingH7812 in the templeH1004 of his godH430 NisrochH5268, his sonsH1121 AdrammelechH152 and SharezerH8272 put himH5221 to the swordH2719 andH1992 escapedH4422 to the landH776 of AraratH780. And his sonH1121 Esar-haddonH634 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
