2 Chronicles 25

American Standard Version

1AmaziahH558 was twentyH6242 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 old when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 twentyH6242 and nineH8672 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389: and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was JehoaddanH3086, of JerusalemH3389. 2And he did that which was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of Jehovah, but not with a perfectH8003 heartH3824. 3Now it came to pass, when the kingdomH4467 wasH1961 established unto him, that he slewH2026 his servantsH5650 that had killedH2026 the kingH4428 his fatherH1. 4But he putH4191 not their children to deathH4191, but did according to that which is writtenH3789 in the lawH8451 in the bookH5612 of MosesH4872, as Jehovah commandedH6680, sayingH559, The fathersH1 shall not dieH4191 for the children, neither shall the children dieH4191 for the fathersH1; but every manH376 shall dieH4191 for his own sinH2399.

5Moreover AmaziahH558 gatheredH6908 JudahH3063 togetherH6908, and ordered them according to their fathers’H1 housesH1004, under captains of thousandsH505 and captains of hundredsH3967, even all JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144: and he numbered them from twentyH6242 yearsH8141 old and upwardH4605, and foundH4672 them threeH7969 hundredH3967 thousandH505 chosen menH970, able to goH3318 forthH3318 to warH6635, that could handle spearH7420 and shieldH6793. 6He hiredH7936 also a hundredH3967 thousandH505 mightyH1368 menH1368 of valor out of IsraelH3478 for a hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701. 7But there cameH935 a manH376 of GodH430 to him, sayingH559, O kingH4428, let not the armyH6635 of IsraelH3478 goH935 with thee; for Jehovah is not with IsraelH3478, to wit, with all the children of EphraimH669. 8But if thou wilt goH935, do valiantly, be strongH2388 for the battleH4421: GodH430 will cast thee down before the enemyH341; for GodH430 hath powerH3581 to helpH5826, and to cast down. 9And AmaziahH558 saidH559 to the manH376 of GodH430, But what shall we do for the hundredH3967 talentsH3603 which I have givenH5414 to the army of IsraelH3478? And the manH376 of GodH430 answered, Jehovah is able to giveH5414 thee muchH7235 more than this. 10Then AmaziahH558 separatedH914 them, to wit, the army that was comeH935 to him out of EphraimH669, to goH935 home again: wherefore their angerH639 was greatly kindled against JudahH3063, and they returnedH7725 home in fierce angerH639. 11And AmaziahH558 tookH2388 courage, and ledH5090 forth his peopleH5971, and went to the ValleyH1516 of SaltH4417, and smote of the children of SeirH8165 tenH6235 thousandH505. 12And other tenH6235 thousandH505 did the children of JudahH3063 carry awayH7993 aliveH2416, and broughtH935 them unto the topH7218 of the rockH5553, and castH7993 them downH7993 from the topH7218 of the rockH5553, so that they were all brokenH1234 in pieces. 13But the men of the army whom AmaziahH558 sent backH7725, that they should not goH7725 with him to battleH4421, fell upon the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, from SamariaH8111 even unto Beth-horonH1032, and smote of them threeH7969 thousandH505, and tookH962 muchH7227 spoilH962.

14Now it cameH935 to pass, after that AmaziahH558 wasH1961 comeH935 from the slaughter of the EdomitesH130, that he broughtH935 the godsH430 of the children of SeirH8165, and setH5975 them up to beH1961 his godsH430, and bowedH7812 downH5221 himself before them, and burned incenseH6999 unto them. 15Wherefore the angerH639 of Jehovah was kindled against AmaziahH558, and he sentH7971 unto him a prophetH5030, who saidH559 unto him, WhyH4100 hast thou soughtH1875 after the godsH430 of the peopleH5971, which have not deliveredH5337 their own peopleH5971 out of thy handH3027? 16And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the kingH4428 saidH559 unto him, Have we madeH6213 thee of the king’sH4428 counselH6098? forbear; whyH4100 shouldest thou beH1961 smitten? Then the prophetH5030 forbare, and saidH559, I knowH3045 that GodH430 hath determined to destroyH7843 thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counselH6098.

17Then AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 took advice, and sentH7971 to JoashH3101, the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 the sonH1121 of JehuH3058, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, ComeH1980, let us lookH7200 one another in the faceH6440. 18And JoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971 to AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, sayingH559, The thistle that was in LebanonH3844 sentH7971 to the cedarH730 that was in LebanonH3844, sayingH559, GiveH5414 thy daughterH1323 to my sonH1121 to wifeH802: and there passedH5674 by a wild beast that was in LebanonH3844, and trod down the thistle. 19Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten EdomH123; and thy heartH3820 lifteth thee up to boast: abide nowH6258 at home; whyH4100 shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fallH5307, even thou, and JudahH3063 with thee?

20But AmaziahH558 would not hearH8085; for it was of GodH430, that he might deliver them into the handH3027 of their enemies, because they had soughtH1875 after the godsH430 of EdomH123. 21So JoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH5927 up; and he and AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 lookedH7200 one another in the faceH6440 at Beth-shemeshH1053, which belongeth to JudahH3063. 22And JudahH3063 was put to the worse before IsraelH3478; and they fledH5127 every manH376 to his tentH168. 23And JoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 took AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059, at Beth-shemeshH1053, and broughtH935 him to JerusalemH3389, and brake down the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 from the gateH8179 of EphraimH669 unto the corner gateH8179, fourH702 hundredH3967 cubitsH520. 24And he took all the goldH2091 and silverH3701, and all the vesselsH3627 that were foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of GodH430 with Obed-edomH5654, and the treasuresH214 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, the hostages also, and returnedH7725 to SamariaH8111.

25And AmaziahH558 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 livedH2421 after the deathH4191 of JoashH3101 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 fifteen yearsH8141. 26Now the restH3499 of the acts of AmaziahH558, firstH7223 and lastH314, behold, are they not writtenH3789 in the bookH5612 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478? 27Now from the timeH6256 that AmaziahH558 did turnH5493 awayH5493 from following Jehovah they made a conspiracyH7195 against him in JerusalemH3389; and he fledH5127 to LachishH3923: but they sentH7971 after him to LachishH3923, and slew him there. 28And they brought him upon horsesH5483, and buriedH6912 him with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of JudahH3063.
