Amaziah Succeeds Joash in Judah
11AmaziahH558 was twenty-fiveH6242H2568 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he becameH4427 kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 for twenty-nineH6242H8672 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389. And his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was JehoaddanH3086 of JerusalemH3389. 2He didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068, 2onlyH7534 not wholeheartedlyH8003H3824. 3Now 3it cameH1961 aboutH1961, asH3512 soonH3512 asH3512 the kingdomH4467 wasH2388 4firmlyH2388 in his graspH5921, that he killedH2026 his servantsH5650 who had killedH5221 his fatherH1 the kingH4428. 4However, he did not putH4191 their childrenH1121 toH4191 deathH4191, but did as it is writtenH3789 in the LawH8451 in the BookH5612 of MosesH4872, whichH834 the LordH3068 commandedH6680, sayingH559, “5FathersH1 shall not be putH4191 toH4191 deathH4191 for sonsH1121, norH3808 sonsH1121 be putH4191 toH4191 deathH4191 for fathersH1; but eachH376 shall be putH4191 toH4191 deathH4191 for his own sinH2399.”
Amaziah Defeats Edomites
5Moreover, AmaziahH558 assembledH6908 JudahH3063 and appointedH5975 them according to their fathers’H1 householdsH1004 under commandersH8269 of thousandsH505 and commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967 throughoutH3605 JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144; and he 6tookH6485 aH6485 censusH6485 of those 7from twentyH6242 yearsH8141 oldH1121 and upwardH4605 and foundH4672 them to be 8threeH7969 hundredH3967 thousandH505 choiceH970 menH970, able to goH3318 to warH6635 and handleH270 spearH7420 and shieldH6793. 6He also hiredH7936 a hundredH3967 thousandH505 valiantH2428 warriorsH1368 from IsraelH3478 for 9a hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701. 7But 10a manH376 of GodH430 cameH935 to him sayingH559, “O kingH4428, do not let the armyH6635 of IsraelH3478 comeH935 with you, for the LordH3068 is not with IsraelH3478 nor with anyH3605 of the sonsH1121 of EphraimH669. 8But ifH518 you do goH935, doH6213 it, be strongH2388 for the battleH4421; yet GodH430 will 11bringH3782 you downH3782 beforeH6440 the enemyH340, 12for GodH430 hasH3426 the powerH3581 to helpH5826 and to 13bringH3782 downH3782.” 9AmaziahH558 saidH559 to the manH376 of GodH430, “But whatH4100 are we to doH6213 about the 14hundredH3967 talentsH3603 whichH834 I have givenH5414 to the troopsH1416 of IsraelH3478?” And the manH376 of GodH430 answeredH559, “15The LordH3068 hasH3426 muchH7235 moreH7235 to giveH5414 you thanH4480 thisH2088.” 10Then AmaziahH558 16dismissedH914 the troopsH1416 whichH834 cameH935 to him from EphraimH669, to goH1980 homeH4725; so their angerH639 burnedH2734 against JudahH3063, and they returnedH7725 17homeH4725 in fierceH2750 angerH639.
11Now AmaziahH558 gatheredH2388 his courageH2388 and ledH5090 his peopleH5971 outH5090, and wentH1980 to 18the ValleyH1516 of SaltH4417, and struckH5221 andH5221 killedH5221 tenH6235 thousandH505 of the sonsH1121 of SeirH8165. 12The sonsH1121 of JudahH3063 also capturedH7617 tenH6235 thousandH505 aliveH2416 and broughtH935 them to the topH7218 of the cliffH5553, and threwH7993 them downH7993 from the topH7218 of the cliffH5553 so that they were allH3605 dashedH1234 toH1234 piecesH1234. 13But the 19troopsH1121H1416 whomH834 AmaziahH558 sentH7725 backH7725, those not goingH1980 with him to battleH4421, raidedH6584 the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 from SamariaH8111 to Beth-horonH1032, and struckH5221 andH5221 killedH5221 threeH7969 thousandH505 of them, and plunderedH962 a largeH7227 amountH7227 of spoilsH961.
Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry
14Now afterH310 AmaziahH558 cameH1961 from slaughteringH5221 the EdomitesH130, 20he broughtH935 the godsH430 of the sonsH1121 of SeirH8165 and setH5975 them up as his godsH430. Then he bowedH2331 downH2331 beforeH6440 them and burnedH6999 incenseH6999 to them. 15So the angerH639 of the LordH3068 burnedH2734 against AmaziahH558, and He sentH7971 him a prophetH5030 who saidH559 to him, “WhyH4100 have you soughtH1875 the godsH430 of the peopleH5971 21whoH834 have not savedH5337 their own peopleH5971 from your handH3027?” 16As he was talkingH1696 with him, 22the king saidH559 to him, “Have we appointedH5414 you to be a royalH4428 counselorH3289? StopH2308! WhyH4100 should 23you be putH5221 toH5221 deathH5221?” Then the prophetH5030 stoppedH2308 and saidH559, “I knowH3045 that GodH430 has plannedH3289 to destroyH7843 you, becauseH3588 you have doneH6213 thisH2088 and have not listenedH8085 to my counselH6098.”
Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel
1724Then AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 tookH3289 counselH3289 and sentH7971 word to JoashH3060 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 the sonH1121 of JehuH3058, the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, “ComeH1980, let’s faceH7200H6440 each other.” 18But JoashH3060 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971 a reply to AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, sayingH559, “25The thornH2336 bushH2336 that was in LebanonH3844 sentH7971 word to the cedarH730 that was in LebanonH3844, sayingH559, ‘GiveH5414 your daughterH1323 to my sonH1121 in marriageH802.’ But a wildH7704 beastH2421 that was in LebanonH3844 passedH5674 byH5674 and trampledH7429 the thornH2336 bushH2336. 19You saidH559, ‘BeholdH2009, you have 26defeatedH5221 EdomH112.’ And 27your heartH3820 has liftedH5375 you upH5375 in boastingH3513. NowH6258 stayH3427 homeH1004; whyH4100 should you provokeH1624 troubleH7463 so that you, would fallH5307, you and JudahH3063 with you?”
20But AmaziahH558 would not listenH8085, for it was from GodH430, so that He might handH5414H3027 them overH5414 to Joash, becauseH3588 they had soughtH1875 the godsH430 of EdomH112. 21So JoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 wentH5927 upH5927, and he and AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 facedH7200H6440 each other at Beth-shemeshH1053, whichH834 belonged to JudahH3063. 22And JudahH3063 was defeatedH5062 28by IsraelH3478, and they fledH5127, everyH376 manH376 to his tentH168. 23Then JoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 capturedH8610 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, the sonH1121 of JoashH3060 the sonH1121 of 29JehoahazH3059, at Beth-shemeshH1053, and broughtH935 him to JerusalemH3389 and toreH6555 downH6555 the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 from the GateH8179 of EphraimH669 to the CornerH6438 GateH8179, 30fourH702 hundredH3967 cubitsH520. 24He took allH3605 the goldH2091 and silverH3701 and allH3605 the utensilsH3627 which were foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of GodH430 with 31Obed-edomH5654, and the treasuresH214 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, the hostagesH1121H8594 too, and returnedH7725 to SamariaH8111.
2532And AmaziahH558, the sonH1121 of JoashH3060 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, livedH2421 fifteenH2568H6240 yearsH8141 afterH310 the deathH4194 of JoashH3060, sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478. 26Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of AmaziahH558, from the firstH7223 to the lastH314, beholdH2009, are they not writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478? 27From the timeH6256 that AmaziahH558 turnedH5493 awayH5493 from followingH310 the LordH3068 they conspiredH7194 againstH5921 him in JerusalemH3389, and he fledH5127 to LachishH3923; but they sentH7971 men afterH310 him to LachishH3923, and they killedH4191 him thereH8033. 28Then they broughtH5375 him on horsesH5483 and buriedH6912 him with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of JudahH3063.
