Amaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 14:1–7)
1AmaziahH558 was twenty-fiveH6242H2568 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 twenty-nineH6242H8672 yearsH8141. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was JehoaddanH3086; she was from JerusalemH3389. 2And he didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068, butH7535 notH3808 wholeheartedlyH3824H8003.
As soon asH834 the kingdomH4467 was firmlyH2388 in his graspH5921, Amaziah executedH2026 the servantsH5650 who had murderedH5221 his fatherH1 the kingH4428. 4YetH853 he did notH3808 put their sonsH1121 to deathH4191, butH3588 acted according to what is writtenH3789 in the LawH8451, in the BookH5612 of MosesH4872, whereH834 the LORDH3068H559 commandedH6680: “FathersH1 must notH3808 be put to deathH4191 forH5921 their childrenH1121, and childrenH1121 must notH3808 be put to deathH4191 forH5921 their fathersH1; eachH376 is to dieH4191 for his own sinH2399.”1
Amaziah’s Victories
5Then AmaziahH558 gatheredH6908 the people of JudahH3063H5975 and assigned them according to their familiesH1H1004 to commandersH8269 of thousandsH505 and of hundredsH3967. And he numberedH6485 those twentyH6242 years of ageH1121H8141 or olderH4605 throughoutH3605 JudahH3063 and BenjaminH1144 and foundH4672 300,000H7969H3967H505 chosenH977 men able to serveH3318 in the armyH6635, bearingH270 the spearH7420 and shieldH6793.
6He also hiredH7936 100,000H3967H505 mighty menH1368 of valorH2428 from IsraelH3478 for a hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701.2 7But a manH376 of GodH430 cameH935 to himH413 and saidH559, “O kingH4428, do not letH408 the armyH6635 of IsraelH3478 goH935 with youH5973, forH3588 the LORDH3068 is notH369 withH5973 IsraelH3478—not with anyH3605 of the EphraimitesH1121H669. 8EvenH3588 ifH518 youH859 goH935 and fightH6213 bravelyH2388 in battleH4421, GodH430 will overthrow youH3782 beforeH6440 the enemyH341, forH3588 GodH430 hasH3426 powerH3581 to helpH5826 and power to overthrowH3782.”
9AmaziahH558 askedH559 the manH376 of GodH430, “WhatH4100 should I doH6213 about the hundredH3967 talentsH3603 I have givenH5414 to the troopsH1416 of IsraelH3478?”
And the manH376 of GodH430H3426 repliedH559, “The LORDH3068 is able to giveH5414 you much moreH7235 than thisH2088.”
10So AmaziahH558 dismissedH914 the troopsH1416 whoH834 had comeH935 to himH413 from EphraimH669 and sent themH1980 homeH4725. And they were furiousH2734H639H3966 with JudahH3063 and returnedH7725 homeH4725 in greatH2750 angerH639.
11Amaziah, howeverH558, summoned his strengthH2388 and ledH5090 his troopsH5971H1980 to the Valley of SaltH1516H4417, where he struck downH5221 10,000H6235H505 menH1121 of SeirH8165, 12and the armyH1121 of JudahH3063 also capturedH7617 10,000H6235H505 men aliveH2416. They took themH935 to the topH7218 of a cliffH5553H7218 and threw them downH7993 so that allH3605 were dashed to piecesH1234.
13MeanwhileH1121 the troopsH1416 thatH834 AmaziahH558 had dismissedH7725 from battleH1980H5973H4421 raidedH6584 the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, from SamariaH8111 toH5704 Beth-horonH1032. They struck downH5221 3,000H7969H505 people and carried offH962 a great deal ofH7227 plunderH961.
Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry
WhenH310 AmaziahH558 returnedH935 from the slaughterH5221 ofH853 the EdomitesH130, he brought backH935 the godsH430 of the SeiritesH1121H8165, set them upH5975 as his own godsH430, bowedH7812 before themH6440, and burned sacrificesH6999 to them. 15Therefore the angerH639 of the LORDH3068 burnedH2734 against AmaziahH558, and He sentH7971 himH413 a prophetH5030, who saidH559, “WhyH4100 have you soughtH1875 this people’sH5971 godsH430, whichH834 could notH3808 deliverH5337 them from your handH3027?”
While he was still speakingH1696, the king askedH559, “Have we made youH5414 the counselorH3289 to the kingH4428? StopH2308! WhyH4100 be struck downH5221?”
So the prophetH5030 stoppedH2308, but he saidH559, “I knowH3045 thatH3588 GodH430 has determinedH3289 to destroy youH7843, becauseH3588 you have doneH6213 thisH2063 and have notH3808 heededH8085 my adviceH6098.”
Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
(2 Kings 14:8–14)
17Then AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 took counselH3289 and sentH7971 word toH413 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 JehoashH31013 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059, the sonH1121 of JehuH3058. “ComeH1980, let us meetH7200 face to faceH6440,” he saidH559.
18But JehoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 repliedH7971 toH413 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063: “A thistleH2336 in LebanonH3844 sentH7971 a message toH413 a cedarH730 in LebanonH3844, sayingH559, ‘GiveH5414 your daughterH1323 to my sonH1121 in marriageH802.’ Then a wildH7704 beastH2416 in LebanonH3844 came alongH5674 and trampledH7429 the thistleH2336. 19You have saidH559, ‘LookH2009, I have defeatedH5221 EdomH123,’ and your heartH3820 has become proudH5375 and boastfulH3513. NowH6258 stayH3427 at homeH1004. WhyH4100 should you stir upH1624 troubleH7451 so that you fallH859—youH5307 and JudahH3063 with youH5973?”
20But AmaziahH558 would notH3808 listenH8085, forH3588 thisH1931 had come from GodH430 in order toH4616 deliver themH5414 into the handH3027 of Jehoash, becauseH3588 they had soughtH1875 the godsH430 of EdomH123. 21So JehoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 advancedH5927, and heH1931 and AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 facedH6440 each otherH7200 at Beth-shemeshH1053 in JudahH3063. 22And JudahH3063 was routedH5062 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, and every manH376 fledH5127 to his own homeH168.
There at Beth-shemeshH1053, JehoashH3101 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 capturedH8610 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, the sonH1121 of JoashH3101, the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059.4
Then Jehoash brought himH935 to JerusalemH3389 and broke downH6555 the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 from the EphraimH669 GateH8179 toH5704 the CornerH6437 GateH8179—a section of fourH702 hundredH3967 cubitsH520.5 24He took allH3605 the goldH2091 and silverH3701 andH853 allH3605 the articlesH3627 foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of GodH430 withH5973 Obed-edomH5654 andH853 in the treasuriesH214 of the royalH4428 palaceH1004, as well asH853 some hostagesH1121H8594. Then he returnedH7725 to SamariaH8111.
The Death of Amaziah
(2 Kings 14:17–20)
25AmaziahH558 sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 livedH2421 for fifteenH2568H6240 yearsH8141 afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoashH3101 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478. 26As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of AmaziahH558, from beginningH7223 to endH314, are they notH3808H2005 writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and IsraelH3478?
27From the timeH6256 thatH834 AmaziahH558 turnedH5493 from followingH310 the LORDH3068, a conspiracyH7195 was formedH7194 against himH5921 in JerusalemH3389, and he fledH5127 to LachishH3923. But men were sentH7971 after himH310 to LachishH3923, and they killed himH4191 thereH8033. 28They carried him backH5375 onH5921 horsesH5483 and buriedH6912 himH853 withH5973 his fathersH1 in the CityH5892 of JudahH3063.6
