Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help
1Now 1when KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 heardH8085 the report, he toreH7167 his clothesH899, coveredH3680 himself with sackclothH8242, and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 2Then he sentH7971 2EliakimH471, whoH834 was inH5921 chargeH5921 ofH5921 the householdH1004, with 3ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5613 and the eldersH2205 of the priestsH3548, coveredH3680 with sackclothH8242, to 4IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030, the sonH1121 of AmozH531. 3And they saidH559 to him, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 HezekiahH2396 saysH559: ‘ThisH2088 dayH3117 is a 5dayH3117 of distressH6869, rebukeH8433, and humiliationH5007; for 6childrenH1121 have comeH935 to the pointH4866 ofH4866 birthH4866, and thereH369 isH369 noH369 strengthH3581 to 7deliverH3205 them. 4PerhapsH194 the LordH3068 your GodH430 will hearH8085 the wordsH1697 of RabshakehH7262, whomH834 his masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 has sentH7971 to 8tauntH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430, and will avengeH3198 the wordsH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 your GodH430 has heardH8085. Therefore, offerH5375 a prayerH8605 for 9the remnantH7611 that is leftH4672.’”
5So the servantsH5650 of KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 cameH935 to IsaiahH3470. 6And IsaiahH3470 saidH559 to them, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 you shall sayH559 to your masterH113: ‘ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: “10Do not beH3372 afraidH3372 becauseH4480H6440 of the wordsH1697 that you have heardH8085, with whichH834 the servantsH5288 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 have blasphemedH1442 Me. 7BeholdH2009, I am going to putH5414 a spiritH7307 in him so that he will 11hearH8085 newsH8052 and 12returnH7725 to his own landH776. And I will make him fallH5307 by the swordH2719 in his own landH776.”’”
8Then RabshakehH7262 returnedH7725 and foundH4672 the king of AssyriaH804 fightingH3898 againstH5921 13LibnahH3841, for he had heardH8085 that 14the king had leftH5265 15LachishH3923. 9Now he 16heardH8085 them sayH559 regardingH5921 TirhakahH8640 kingH4428 of 1718CushH3568, “He has comeH3318 outH3318 to fightH3898 againstH854 you,” and when he heardH8085 it he sentH7971 messengersH4397 to HezekiahH2396, sayingH559, 10“ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 you shall sayH559 to HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of 19JudahH3063: ‘20Do not let your GodH430 in whomH834 you trustH982 deceiveH5378 you by sayingH559, “JerusalemH3389 will not be handedH5414H3027 overH5414 to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.” 1121BeholdH2009, you yourselfH859 have heardH8085 whatH834 the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have doneH6213 to allH3605 the landsH776, destroyingH2763 them completelyH2763. So will you be savedH5337? 12Did the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 whichH834 my fathersH1 destroyedH7843 saveH5337 them: 22GozanH1470, 23HaranH2771, RezephH7530, and the sonsH1121 of EdenH5729 whoH834 were in TelassarH8515? 13WhereH346 is the kingH4428 of HamathH2574, the kingH4428 of ArpadH774, the kingH4428 of the cityH5892 of SepharvaimH5617, and of HenaH2012 and IvvahH5755?’”
Hezekiah’s Prayer in the Temple
14Then HezekiahH2396 tookH3947 the 24letterH5612 from the handH3027 of the messengersH4397 and readH7121 it, and he wentH5927 upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and 25spreadH6566 it outH6566 beforeH6440 the LordH3068. 15HezekiahH2396 prayedH6419 to the LordH3068, sayingH559, 16“LordH3068 of armiesH6635, GodH430 of IsraelH3478, 26who is enthronedH3427 above the cherubimH3742, You are the 27GodH430, You aloneH905, of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776. 28You madeH6213 heavenH8064 and earthH776. 1729InclineH5186 Your earH241, LordH3068, and hearH8085; openH6491 Your eyesH5869, LordH3068, and seeH7200; and 30listenH8085 to allH3605 the wordsH1697 of SennacheribH5576, who sentH7971 them to 31tauntH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430. 18TrulyH551, LordH3068, the 32kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have laidH2717 wasteH2717 allH3605 the countriesH776 and their landsH776, 19and have thrownH5414 their godsH430 into the fireH784, for they were not godsH430 but only the 33workH4639 of humanH120 handsH3027, woodH6086 and stoneH68. So they have 34destroyedH6 them. 20But nowH6258 LordH3068, our GodH430, 35saveH3467 us from his handH3027, so that 36allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 that You aloneH905, 37LordH3068, are GodH430.”
God Answers through Isaiah
21Then 38IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531 sentH7971 word to HezekiahH2396, sayingH559, “ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saysH559: ‘BecauseH834 you have prayedH6419 to Me aboutH413 SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, 22thisH2088 is the wordH1697 that the LordH3068 has spokenH1696 againstH5921 him: “She has shownH959 contemptH959 for you and deridedH3932 you, The 39virginH1330 40daughterH1323 of ZionH6726; The daughterH1323 of JerusalemH3389 has 41shakenH5128 her headH7218 behindH310 you!23WhomH4310 have you 42tauntedH2778 and blasphemedH1442? And againstH5921 whomH4310 have you raisedH7311 your voiceH6963 And 43haughtilyH4791 44raisedH5375 your eyesH5869? AgainstH413 the 45HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478!24ThroughH3027 your servantsH5650 you have tauntedH2778 the LordH136, And you have saidH559, ‘With my manyH7230 chariotsH7393 I cameH5927 upH5927 to the heightsH4791 of the mountainsH2022, To the remotestH3411 partsH3411 of 46LebanonH3844; And I cutH3772 downH3772 its tallH6967 47cedarsH730 and its choiceH4004 junipersH1265. And I will comeH935 to its 48highestH4791 peakH7093, its thickestH3759 49forestH3293.25I dugH6979 wells and drankH8354 watersH4325, And 50with the soleH3709 of my feetH6471 I driedH2717 upH2717 AllH3605 the canalsH2975 of 51EgyptH4693.’2652Have you not heardH8085? LongH7350 agoH7350 I didH6213 it, From ancientH6924 timesH3117H6924 I 53plannedH3335 it. NowH6258 54I have broughtH935 it aboutH935 That 55you would turnH7582 fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 into 56ruinedH5327 heapsH1530.27Therefore their inhabitantsH3427 were 57powerlessH7116H3027, They were shatteredH2865 and putH954 toH954 shameH954; They were like the 58vegetationH6212 of the fieldH7704 and the greenH3419 grassH1877, Like 59grassH2682 on the housetopsH1406 60that is scorchedH7710 beforeH6440 it has grownH7054.28But I 61knowH3045 your sittingH3427 downH3427, Your goingH3318 outH3318, your comingH935 inH935, And your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me.29BecauseH3282 of your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me And because your 62complacencyH7600 has comeH5927 upH5927 to My earsH241, I will putH7760 My 63hookH2397 in your noseH639 And My 64bridleH4964 in your lipsH8193, And I will turnH7725 you backH7725 65by the wayH1870 that you cameH935.
30“Then thisH2088 shall be the signH226 for you: 66you will eatH398 this yearH8141 whatH5599 67growsH5599 ofH5599 itselfH5599, in the secondH8145 yearH8141 whatH5501 growsH5501 from the same, and in the thirdH7992 yearH8141 sowH2232, harvestH7114, plantH5193 vineyardsH3754, and eatH398 their fruitH6529. 31The 68survivorsH6413 that are 69leftH7604 of the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 will againH3254 70take rootH8328 downwardH4295 and bearH6213 fruitH6529 upwardH4605. 32For outH3318 of JerusalemH3389 a 71remnantH7611 will goH3318, and out of MountH2022 ZionH6726 survivorsH6413. The 72zealH7068 of the LordH3068 of armiesH6635 will performH6213 thisH2088.”’
33“ThereforeH3651, thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559 aboutH413 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804: ‘He will not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892 norH3808 shootH3384 an arrowH2671 thereH8033; and he will not comeH6923 beforeH6923 it with a shieldH4043, norH3808 heapH8210 upH8210 an 73assaultH5550 rampH5550 againstH5921 it. 3474By the wayH1870 that he cameH935, by the same he will returnH7725, and he will not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892,’ declaresH5002 the LordH3068. 35‘For I will 75protectH1598 thisH2088 cityH5892 to saveH3467 it 76for My own sakeH4616, and for My servantH5650 David’sH1732 sakeH4616.’”
Assyrians Destroyed
36Then the 77angelH4397 of the LordH3068 wentH3318 outH3318 and struckH5221 185,000H3967H8084H2568H505 in the campH4264 of the AssyriansH804; and when the rest gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, beholdH2009, allH3605 of 78the 185,000 were 79deadH4191H6297. 37So SennacheribH5576 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 departedH5265 and 80returnedH7725 home and livedH3427 in 81NinevehH5210. 38Then it cameH1961 aboutH1961, as he was worshipingH2331 in the houseH1004 of NisrochH5268 his godH430, that his sonsH1121 AdrammelechH152 and SharezerH8272 killedH5221 him with the swordH2719; and they escapedH4422 to the landH776 of 82AraratH780. And his sonH1121 83EsarhaddonH634 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
