Joshua 9
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass when all the kingsH4428 who were on this sideH5676 the JordanH3383, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coastH2348 of the greatH1419 seaH3220 as far as oppositeH4136 to LebanonH3844, the HittiteH2850, and the AmoriteH567, the CanaaniteH3669, the PerizziteH6522, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983, heardH8085 [of it], 2that they assembledH6908 togetherH3162, to fightH3898 with JoshuaH3091 and with IsraelH3478, with oneH259 accord. 3And whenH834 the inhabitantsH3427 of GibeonH1391 heardH8085 what JoshuaH3091 had done to JerichoH3405 and to Ai, 4then they alsoH1571 actedH6213 with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and tookH3947 old sacksH8242 upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up; 5and old and patched sandalsH5275 upon their feetH7272, and old garmentsH8008 upon them; and all the breadH3899 of their provision wasH1961 dryH3001 [and] mouldy. 6And they wentH935 to JoshuaH3091 unto the campH4264 at GilgalH1537, and saidH559 to him, and to the menH376 of IsraelH3478, From a farH7350 country are we comeH935; and nowH6258 makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with us. 7And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 to the HiviteH2340, PerhapsH194 thou dwellest in the midstH7130 of us, and howH349 should I makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with thee? 8And they saidH559 unto JoshuaH3091, We are thy servantsH5650. And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 to them, Who are ye? and from whence comeH935 ye? 9And they saidH559 to him, From a veryH3966 farH7350 country are thy servantsH5650 comeH935, because of the nameH8034 of Jehovah thy 1GodH430; for we have heardH8085 the fame of him, and all that he did in EgyptH4714, 10and all that he did to the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567 that were beyond JordanH3383, to SihonH5511 the kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and to OgH5747 the kingH4428 of BashanH1316, who was at AshtarothH6252. 11And our eldersH2205 and all the inhabitantsH3427 of our country spoke to us, sayingH559, TakeH3947 victuals in your handH3027 for the wayH1870, and go to meet them, and sayH559 to them, We are your servantsH5650, and nowH6258 makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with us. 12This our breadH3899 we took warm for our provision out of our housesH1004 on the dayH3117 we came forthH3318 to goH3318 unto you; and nowH6258, behold, it is dryH3001, and is becomeH1961 mouldy. 13And these flasks of wineH3196 which we filledH4390 newH2319, behold, they are rent; and these our garmentsH8008 and our sandalsH5275 are become old by reason of the veryH3966 long journeyH1870. 14And the menH376 tookH3947 of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouthH6310 of Jehovah. 15And JoshuaH3091 madeH6213 peaceH7965 with them, and madeH6213 a covenantH1285 with them, to let them liveH2421; and the princesH5387 of the assemblyH5712 sworeH7650 unto them. 16And it came to pass at the endH7097 of threeH7969 daysH3117 after they had madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with them, that they heardH8085 that they were their neighbours, and that they dweltH3427 in their midstH7130. 17And the children of IsraelH3478 journeyed, and cameH935 to their citiesH5892 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117; and their citiesH5892 were GibeonH1391, and Chephirah, and BeerothH881, and Kirjath-jearim. 18And the children of IsraelH3478 did not smite them, because the princesH5387 of the assemblyH5712 had swornH7650 unto them by Jehovah the 2GodH430 of IsraelH3478. Then all the assemblyH5712 murmured against the princesH5387. 19And all the princesH5387 saidH559 to all the assemblyH5712, We have swornH7650 unto them by Jehovah the 3GodH430 of IsraelH3478, and nowH6258 we may not touchH5060 them. 20This we will do to them, and let them liveH2421, lest wrathH7110 come upon us, because of the oathH7621 which we sworeH7650 unto them. 21And the princesH5387 saidH559 to them, Let them liveH2421. And they were hewers of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for all the assemblyH5712; as the princesH5387 had saidH559 to them. 22And JoshuaH3091 calledH7121 for them, and he spokeH1696 to them, sayingH559, WhyH4100 have ye deceived us, sayingH559, We are veryH3966 farH7350 from you; whereas ye dwellH3427 in our midstH7130? 23And nowH6258 ye are cursedH779, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of woodH6086, and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the houseH1004 of my 4GodH430. 24And they answered JoshuaH3091 and saidH559, Because it was certainly toldH5046 thy servantsH5650 how that Jehovah thy 5GodH430 commandedH6680 his servantH5650 MosesH4872 to giveH5414 you all the landH776, and to destroyH8045 all the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 from before you; and we fearedH3372 greatly for our livesH5315 because of you, and did this thingH1697. 25And nowH6258 behold, we are in thy handH3027: as it is goodH2896 and rightH3477 in thine eyesH5869 to do to us, do. 26And he did soH3651 to them, and deliveredH5337 them out of the handH3027 of the children of IsraelH3478, and they did not slayH2026 them. 27And JoshuaH3091 madeH5414 them that dayH3117 hewers of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the assemblyH5712, and for the altarH4196 of Jehovah, to this dayH3117, in the placeH4725 which he should chooseH977.
