Joshua 9
Revised Version 1895
1And it cameH1961 to passH1961 when allH3605 the kingsH4428 whichH834 were beyondH5676 JordanH3383, in the hillH2022 countryH2022, and in the lowlandH8219, and on allH3605 the shore of the greatH1419 seaH3220 in frontH4136 of LebanonH3844, the HittiteH2850, and the AmoriteH567, the CanaaniteH3669, the PerizziteH6522, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983, heardH8085 thereof; 2that they gatheredH6908 themselvesH6908 togetherH3162, to fightH3898 with JoshuaH3091 and with IsraelH3478, with one accordH6310. 3But when the inhabitantsH3427 of GibeonH1391 heardH8085 whatH834 JoshuaH3091 had doneH6213 unto JerichoH3405 and to AiH5857, 4they also didH6213 work wilily, and went and madeH6213 as if they had been ambassadors, and tookH3947 old sacksH8242 upon their asses, and wineskinsH4997, old and rent and bound upH1234; 5and old shoesH5275 and clouted uponH5921 their feetH7272, and old garmentsH8008 uponH5921 them; and allH3605 the breadH3899 of their provisionH3899 was dryH3001 and was becomeH1961 mouldy. 6And they wentH935 to JoshuaH3091 unto the campH4264 at GilgalH1537, and saidH559 unto him, and to the menH376 of IsraelH3478, WeH6258 are comeH935 from a farH7350 countryH776: nowH6258 therefore makeH3772 ye a covenantH1285 with usH413. 7And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto the HivitesH2340, Peradventure ye dwellH3427 among usH413; and howH349 shall weH7130 makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with youH859? 8And they saidH559 unto JoshuaH3091, WeH587 are thy servantsH5650. And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 unto them, Who are ye? and from whence comeH935 ye? 9And they saidH559 unto him, From a veryH3966 farH7350 countryH776 thy servantsH5650 are comeH935 becauseH3588 of the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 thy GodH430: for weH3588 have heardH8085 the fameH8034 of him, and allH3605 that he didH6213 in EgyptH4714, 10and allH3605 that he didH6213 to the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567, that were beyondH5676 JordanH3383, to SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and to OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316, whichH834 was at AshtarothH6252. 11And our eldersH2205 and allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of our countryH776 spake to usH413 sayingH559, TakeH3947 provision in your handH3027 for the journeyH1870 and go to meetH7125 them, and sayH559 unto them, WeH587 are your servantsH5650: and nowH6258 makeH3772 ye a covenantH1285 with usH413. 12This our breadH3899 weH3117 tookH3318 hotH2525 for our provisionH3899 outH3318 of our housesH1004 on the dayH3117 weH3117 cameH1961 forthH3318 to goH3318 unto youH3117; but nowH6258, beholdH2009, it is dryH3001, and is becomeH1961 mouldy: 13and theseH428 wineskinsH4997, whichH834 weH834 filledH4390, were newH2319; and, beholdH2009, they be rent: and theseH428 our garmentsH8008 and our shoesH5275 are becomeH1086 oldH1086 by reasonH834 of the veryH3966 longH7230 journeyH1870. 14And the menH376 tookH3947 of their provision, and askedH7592 notH3808 counselH6310 at the mouthH6310 of the LORDH3068. 15And JoshuaH3091 madeH6213 peaceH7965 with them, and madeH6213 a covenantH1285 with them, to let them liveH2421: and the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 sware unto them. 16And it cameH1961 to passH1961 at the endH7097 of threeH7969 daysH3117 afterH310 they had madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with them, that they heardH8085 that they were their neighbours, and that they dweltH3427 among them. 17And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 journeyedH5265, and cameH935 unto their citiesH5892 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117. NowH3117 their citiesH5892 were GibeonH1391, and Chephirah, and BeerothH881, and Kiriath-jearimH7157. 18And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 smoteH5221 them notH3808, becauseH3588 the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 had swornH7650 unto them by the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478. And allH3605 the congregationH5712 murmuredH3885 againstH5921 the princesH5387. 19But allH3605 the princesH5387 saidH559 unto allH3605 the congregationH5712, WeH587 have swornH7650 unto them by the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478: nowH6258 therefore weH587 may notH3808 touchH5060 them. 20This weH834 will doH6213 to them, and letH1961 them liveH2421; lest wrathH7110 be uponH5921 usH5921, becauseH5921 of the oathH7621 whichH834 weH834 sware unto them. 21And the princesH5387 saidH559 unto them, LetH1961 them liveH2421: soH1961 they becameH1961 hewersH2404 of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 unto allH3605 the congregationH5712; as the princesH5387 had spokenH1696 unto them. 22And JoshuaH3091 calledH7121 for them, and he spake unto them, sayingH559, Wherefore have ye beguiled usH413, sayingH559, WeH587 are veryH3966 farH7350 from youH859; when ye dwellH3427 among usH413? 23NowH6258 therefore ye are cursedH779, and there shall neverH3808 failH3772 to be of youH859 bondmen, bothH4480 hewersH2404 of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the houseH1004 of my GodH430. 24And they answeredH559 JoshuaH3091, and saidH559, BecauseH3588 it was certainlyH3588 toldH5046 thy servantsH5650, howH834 that the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 commandedH6680 his servantH5650 MosesH4872 to giveH5414 youH834 allH3605 the landH776, and to destroyH8045 allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 from beforeH6440 youH834; therefore weH3588 were sore afraidH3372 for our livesH5315 becauseH3588 of youH834, and have doneH6213 this thingH1697. 25And nowH6258, beholdH2005, weH6258 are in thine handH3027: as it seemeth goodH2896 and rightH3477 unto thee to doH6213 unto usH5869, doH6213. 26And soH3651 didH6213 he unto them, and deliveredH5337 them outH3027 of the handH3027 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, that they slewH2026 them notH3808. 27And JoshuaH3091 madeH5414 them that dayH3117 hewersH2404 of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the congregationH5712, and for the altarH4196 of the LORDH3068, unto this dayH3117, in the placeH4725 whichH834 he should chooseH977.
