Joshua 9
American Standard Version
1And it came to pass, when all the kingsH4428 that were beyond the JordanH3383, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the greatH1419 seaH3220 in frontH4136 of LebanonH3844, the HittiteH2850, and the AmoriteH567, the CanaaniteH3669, the PerizziteH6522, the HiviteH2340, and the JebusiteH2983, heardH8085 thereof; 2that they gatheredH6908 themselves togetherH3162, to fightH3898 with JoshuaH3091 and with IsraelH3478, with oneH259 accord.
3But whenH834 the inhabitantsH3427 of GibeonH1391 heardH8085 what JoshuaH3091 had done unto JerichoH3405 and to Ai, 4they alsoH1571 did work wilily, and went and madeH6213 as if they had been ambassadors, and tookH3947 old sacksH8242 upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up, 5and old and patched shoes upon their feetH7272, and old garmentsH8008 upon them; and all the breadH3899 of their provision wasH1961 dryH3001 and wasH1961 becomeH1961 mouldy. 6And they wentH935 to JoshuaH3091 unto the campH4264 at GilgalH1537, and saidH559 unto him, and to the menH376 of IsraelH3478, We are comeH935 from a farH7350 country: nowH6258 thereforeH6258 makeH3772 ye a covenantH1285 with us. 7And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwellH3427 among us; and howH349 shall we makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with you? 8And they saidH559 unto JoshuaH3091, We are thy servantsH5650. And JoshuaH3091 saidH559 unto them, Who are ye? and from whence comeH935 ye? 9And they saidH559 unto him, From a veryH3966 farH7350 country thy servantsH5650 are comeH935 because of the nameH8034 of Jehovah thy GodH430: for we have heardH8085 the fame of him, and all that he did in EgyptH4714, 10and all that he did to the twoH8147 kingsH4428 of the AmoritesH567, that were beyond the JordanH3383, to SihonH5511 kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, and to OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316, who was at AshtarothH6252. 11And our eldersH2205 and all the inhabitantsH3427 of our country spake to us, sayingH559, TakeH3947 provision in your handH3027 for the journeyH1870, and go to meet them, and sayH559 unto them, We are your servantsH5650: and nowH6258 makeH3772 ye a covenantH1285 with us. 12This our breadH3899 we took hot for our provision out of our housesH1004 on the dayH3117 we came forthH3318 to goH3318 unto you; but nowH6258, behold, it is dryH3001, and is becomeH1961 mouldy: 13and these wine-skins, which we filledH4390, were newH2319; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garmentsH8008 and our shoes are become old by reason of the veryH3966 long journeyH1870. 14And the menH376 tookH3947 of their provision, and askedH7592 not counsel at the mouthH6310 of Jehovah. 15And JoshuaH3091 madeH6213 peaceH7965 with them, and madeH6213 a covenantH1285 with them, to let them liveH2421: and the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 sware unto them.
16And it came to pass at the endH7097 of threeH7969 daysH3117 after they had madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with them, that they heardH8085 that they were their neighbors, and that they dweltH3427 among them. 17And the children of IsraelH3478 journeyed, and cameH935 unto their citiesH5892 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117. Now their citiesH5892 were GibeonH1391, and Chephirah, and BeerothH881, and Kiriath-jearimH7157. 18And the children of IsraelH3478 smote them not, because the princesH5387 of the congregationH5712 had swornH7650 unto them by Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478. And all the congregationH5712 murmured against the princesH5387. 19But all the princesH5387 saidH559 unto all the congregationH5712, We have swornH7650 unto them by Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478: nowH6258 thereforeH6258 we may not touchH5060 them. 20This we will do to them, and let them liveH2421; lest wrathH7110 beH1961 upon us, because of the oathH7621 which we sware unto them. 21And the princesH5387 saidH559 unto them, Let them liveH2421: so they becameH1961 hewers of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 unto all the congregationH5712, as the princesH5387 had spokenH1696 unto them.
22And JoshuaH3091 calledH7121 for them, and he spake unto them, sayingH559, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, sayingH559, We are veryH3966 farH7350 from you; when ye dwellH3427 among us? 23NowH6258 thereforeH6258 ye are cursedH779, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the houseH1004 of my GodH430. 24And they answered JoshuaH3091, and saidH559, Because it was certainly toldH5046 thy servantsH5650, how that Jehovah thy GodH430 commandedH6680 his servantH5650 MosesH4872 to giveH5414 you all the landH776, and to destroyH8045 all the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 from before you; therefore we were sore afraidH3372 for our livesH5315 because of you, and have done this thingH1697. 25And nowH6258, behold, we are in thy handH3027: as it seemeth goodH2896 and rightH3477 unto thee to do unto us, do. 26And soH3651 did he unto them, and deliveredH5337 them out of the handH3027 of the children of IsraelH3478, that they slewH2026 them not. 27And JoshuaH3091 madeH5414 them that dayH3117 hewers of woodH6086 and drawersH7579 of waterH4325 for the congregationH5712, and for the altarH4196 of Jehovah, unto this dayH3117, in the placeH4725 which he should chooseH977.
