2 Kings 4

American Standard Version

1Now there criedH6817 a certain womanH802 of the wivesH802 of the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 unto ElishaH477, sayingH559, Thy servantH5650 my husbandH376 is deadH4191; and thou knowest that thy servantH5650 did fearH3372 Jehovah: and the creditorH5383 is comeH935 to takeH3947 unto him my twoH8147 children to beH1961 bondmen. 2And ElishaH477 saidH559 unto her, What shall I do for thee? tellH5046 me; what hast thou in the houseH1004? And she saidH559, Thy handmaid hath not anything in the houseH1004, save a pot of oilH8081. 3Then he saidH559, Go, borrow thee vesselsH3627 abroad of all thy neighborsH7934, even emptyH7386 vesselsH3627; borrow not a fewH4591. 4And thou shalt goH935 in, and shutH5462 the doorH1817 upon thee and upon thy sonsH1121, and pourH3332 out into all those vesselsH3627; and thou shalt setH5265 aside that which is fullH4392. 5So she went from him, and shutH5462 the doorH1817 upon her and upon her sonsH1121; they broughtH5066 the vessels to her, and she pouredH3332 out. 6And it came to pass, when the vesselsH3627 wereH1961 fullH4390, that she saidH559 unto her sonH1121, BringH5066 me yetH5750 a vesselH3627. And he saidH559 unto her, There is not a vesselH3627 more. And the oilH8081 stayed. 7Then she cameH935 and toldH5046 the manH376 of GodH430. And he saidH559, GoH935, sellH4376 the oilH8081, and payH7999 thy debt, and liveH2421 thou and thy sonsH1121 of the rest.

8And it fell on a dayH3117, that ElishaH477 passedH5674 to ShunemH7766, where wasH1961 a greatH1419 womanH802; and she constrained him to eatH398 breadH3899. And so it wasH1961, that as oft as he passedH5674 by, he turnedH5493 in thither to eatH398 breadH3899. 9And she saidH559 unto her husbandH376, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holyH6918 manH376 of GodH430, that passeth by us continuallyH8548. 10Let us makeH7760, I pray thee, a littleH6996 chamberH5944 on the wallH7023; and let us setH7760 for him there a bedH4296, and a tableH7979, and a seatH3678, and a candlestick: and it shall beH1961, when he cometh to us, that he shall turnH5493 in thither. 11And it fell on a dayH3117, that he cameH935 thither, and he turnedH5493 into the chamberH5944 and layH7901 there. 12And he saidH559 to GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, CallH7121 this ShunammiteH7767. And when he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 before him. 13And he saidH559 unto him, SayH559 now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spokenH1696 for to the kingH4428, or to the captain of the hostH6635? And she answered, I dwellH3427 among mine own peopleH5971. 14And he saidH559, What then is to be done for her? And GehaziH1522 answered, Verily she hath no sonH1121, and her husbandH376 is old. 15And he saidH559, CallH7121 her. And when he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 in the doorH6607. 16And he saidH559, At this season, when the timeH6256 cometh round, thou shalt embraceH2263 a sonH1121. And she saidH559, Nay, my lordH113, thou manH376 of GodH430, do not lieH3576 unto thy handmaid.

17And the womanH802 conceivedH2029, and bare a sonH1121 at that season, whenH834 the timeH6256 came round, as ElishaH477 had saidH1696 unto her. 18And when the childH3206 wasH1961 grownH1431, it fell on a dayH3117, that he wentH3318 out to his fatherH1 to the reapers. 19And he saidH559 unto his fatherH1, My headH7218, my headH7218. And he saidH559 to his servantH5288, CarryH5375 him to his motherH517. 20And when he had takenH5375 him, and broughtH935 him to his motherH517, he satH3427 on her knees till noonH6672, and then diedH4191. 21And she wentH3318 up and laidH7901 him on the bedH4296 of the manH376 of GodH430, and shutH5462 the door upon him, and wentH3318 out. 22And she calledH7121 unto her husbandH376, and saidH559, SendH7971 me, I pray thee, oneH259 of the servantsH5288, and oneH259 of the asses, that I may runH7323 to the manH376 of GodH430, and come again. 23And he saidH559, Wherefore wilt thou goH1980 to him to-day? it is neither newH2320 moonH2320 nor sabbathH7676. And she saidH559, It shall be well. 24Then she saddledH2280 an ass, and saidH559 to her servantH5288, Drive, and go forward; slacken me not the ridingH7392, except I bid thee. 25So she wentH935, and cameH935 unto the manH376 of GodH430 to mount CarmelH3760.

And it cameH935 to pass, when the manH376 of GodH430 sawH7200 her afar off, that he saidH559 to GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, Behold, yonder is the ShunammiteH7767: 26runH7323, I pray thee, nowH6258 to meet her, and sayH559 unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husbandH376? is it well with the childH3206? And she answered, It is well. 27And when she cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 to the hillH2022, she caught holdH2388 of his feetH7272. And GehaziH1522 cameH935 near to thrust her away; but the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559, Let her alone: for her soulH5315 is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not toldH5046 me. 28Then she saidH559, Did I desire a sonH1121 of my lordH113? did I not sayH559, Do not deceive me? 29Then he saidH559 to GehaziH1522, GirdH2296 up thy loinsH4975, and takeH3947 my staffH4938 in thy handH3027, and go thy way: if thou meet any manH376, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answerH6030 him not again: and lay my staffH4938 upon the faceH6440 of the child. 30And the motherH517 of the child saidH559, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soulH5315 liveth, I will not leaveH5800 thee. And he aroseH6965, and followed her. 31And GehaziH1522 passedH5674 on before them, and laid the staffH4938 upon the faceH6440 of the child; but there was neither voiceH6963, nor hearing. Wherefore he returnedH7725 to meet him, and toldH5046 him, sayingH559, The child is not awaked.

32And when ElishaH477 was comeH935 into the houseH1004, behold, the child was deadH4191, and laidH7901 upon his bedH4296. 33He wentH935 in therefore, and shutH5462 the doorH1817 upon them twain, and prayedH6419 unto Jehovah. 34And he wentH5927 up, and layH7901 upon the childH3206, and putH7760 his mouthH6310 upon his mouthH6310, and his eyesH5869 upon his eyesH5869, and his handsH3709 upon his handsH3709: and he stretched himself upon him; and the fleshH1320 of the childH3206 waxed warmH2552. 35Then he returnedH7725, and walked in the houseH1004 once to and fro; and wentH5927 up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed sevenH7651 timesH6471, and the child openedH6491 his eyesH5869. 36And he calledH7121 GehaziH1522, and saidH559, CallH7121 this ShunammiteH7767. So he calledH7121 her. And when she was comeH935 in unto him, he saidH559, TakeH5375 up thy sonH1121. 37Then she wentH3318 in, and fellH5307 at his feetH7272, and bowedH7812 herself to the groundH776; and she tookH5375 up her sonH1121, and wentH3318 out.

38And ElishaH477 came again to GilgalH1537. And there was a dearth in the landH776; and the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 were sittingH3427 before him; and he saidH559 unto his servantH5288, Set on the greatH1419 potH5518, and boilH1310 pottage for the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030. 39And oneH259 wentH3318 out into the fieldH7704 to gatherH3950 herbs, and foundH4672 a wild vineH1612, and gatheredH3950 thereof wild gourds his lap full, and cameH935 and shred them into the potH5518 of pottage; for they knewH3045 them not. 40So they pouredH3332 out for the menH376 to eatH398. And it came to pass, as they wereH1961 eatingH398 of the pottage, that they criedH6817 out, and saidH559, O manH376 of GodH430, there is deathH4194 in the potH5518. And they could not eatH398 thereof. 41But he saidH559, Then bring meal. And he castH7993 it into the potH5518; and he saidH559, PourH3332 out for the peopleH5971, that they may eatH398. And there wasH1961 no harmH7451 in the potH5518.

42And there cameH935 a manH376 from Baal-shalishah, and broughtH935 the manH376 of GodH430 breadH3899 of the first-fruits, twentyH6242 loaves of barleyH8184, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he saidH559, GiveH5414 unto the peopleH5971, that they may eatH398. 43And his servantH8334 saidH559, What, should I setH5414 this before a hundredH3967 menH376? But he saidH559, GiveH5414 the peopleH5971, that they may eatH398; for thusH3541 saith Jehovah, They shall eatH398, and shall leaveH3498 thereof. 44So he setH5414 it before them, and they did eatH398, and leftH3498 thereof, according to the wordH1697 of Jehovah.
