The Widow’s Oil
1Now a womanH802 of the wivesH802 of 1the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 criedH6817 outH6817 to ElishaH477, sayingH559, “Your servantH5650 my husbandH376 is deadH4191, and you knowH3045 that your servantH5650 fearedH3372 the LordH3068; and 2the creditorH5383 has comeH935 to takeH3947 my twoH8147 childrenH3206 to be his slavesH5650.” 2So ElishaH477 saidH559 to her, “WhatH4100 shall I doH6213 for you? TellH5046 me, whatH4100 do you haveH3426 in the houseH1004?” And she saidH559, “Your servantH8198 hasH369 nothingH369H3605 in the houseH1004 exceptH3588H518 3a jarH610 of oilH8081.” 3Then he saidH559, “GoH1980, 4borrowH7592 containersH3627 5elsewhereH2351 for yourself, emptyH7386 containersH3627 from allH3605 your neighborsH7934--do not getH4591 too fewH4591. 4Then you shall comeH935 inH935 and shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 you and your sonsH1121, and pourH3332 into allH3605 theseH428 containersH3627; and you shall setH5265 asideH5265 what is fullH4392.” 5So she leftH1980H4480 him and shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 her and her sonsH1121; they began bringingH5066 the containers to her, and she pouredH3332 the oil. 6When 6the containersH3627 were fullH4390, she saidH559 to her sonH1121, “BringH5066 me anotherH5750 containerH3627.” But he saidH559 to her, “ThereH369 7areH369 noH369 moreH5750 containersH3627.” Then the oilH8081 stoppedH5975. 7So she cameH935 and toldH5046 8the manH376 of GodH430. And he saidH559, “GoH1980, sellH4376 the oilH8081 and payH7999 your debtH5386, and you and your sonsH1121 can liveH2421 on the restH3498.”
The Shunammite Woman
8Now a dayH3117 cameH1961 when ElishaH477 wentH5674 overH5674 to 9ShunemH7766, whereH8033 there was a 10prominentH1419 womanH802, and she urgedH2388 him to eatH398 11foodH3899. And so it was, as oftenH1767 as he passedH5674 byH5674, that he turnedH5493 inH5493 thereH8033 to eatH398 12foodH3899. 9And she saidH559 to her husbandH376, “BeholdH2009 nowH4994, I amH3045 awareH3045 that thisH1931 is a holyH6918 13manH376 of GodH430 passingH5674 by us repeatedlyH8548. 10PleaseH4994, let’s 14makeH6213 a littleH6996 walledH7023 upperH5944 roomH5944, and let’s setH7760 upH7760 a bedH4296 for him thereH8033, and a tableH7979, a chairH3678, and a lampstandH4501; then it shall be, when he comesH935 to us, that he can turnH5493 inH5493 thereH8033.”
11Now 15one dayH3117 he cameH935 thereH8033, and turnedH5493 inH5493 to the upperH5944 roomH5944 and 16restedH7901H8033. 12Then he saidH559 to his servantH5288 17GehaziH1522, “CallH7121 thisH2088 ShunammiteH7767.” And when he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 beforeH6440 him. 13And he saidH559 to him, “SayH559 nowH4994 to her, ‘BeholdH2009, you have takenH2729 troubleH2729 for us with allH3605 thisH2088 18careH2731; whatH4100 can I doH6213 for you? 19WouldH3426 you likeH3426 me to speakH1696 for you to the kingH4428 orH176 to the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635?’” But she 20answeredH559, “I liveH3427 amongH8432 my own peopleH5971.” 14So he saidH559, “WhatH4100 then is to be doneH6213 for her?” And GehaziH1522 21answeredH559, “It is a factH61 that she hasH369 noH369 sonH1121, and her husbandH376 isH2204 oldH2204.” 15He then saidH559, “CallH7121 her.” When he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 in the doorwayH6607. 16Then he saidH559, “22At thisH2088 seasonH4150 23nextH2416 yearH6256, you are going to embraceH2263 a sonH1121.” And she saidH559, “NoH408, my lordH113, you manH376 of GodH430, 24do not lieH3576 to your servantH8198.”
17Now the womanH802 conceivedH2029 and gaveH3205 birthH3205 to a sonH1121 at that seasonH4150 25the nextH2416 yearH6256, as ElishaH477 had toldH1696 her.
The Shunammite’s Son
18When the childH3206 was grownH1431, the dayH3117 cameH1961 that he wentH3318 outH3318 to his fatherH1, to the reapersH7114. 19And he saidH559 to his fatherH1, “My headH7218, my headH7218!” And his father saidH559 to his servantH5288, “CarryH5375 him to his motherH517.” 20When he had carriedH5375 him and broughtH935 him to his motherH517, he satH3427 on her 26lapH1290 untilH5704 noonH6672, and then he diedH4191. 21And she wentH5927 upH5927 and 27laidH7901 him on the bedH4296 of 28the manH376 of GodH430, and shutH5462 the door behindH1157 him and leftH3318. 22Then she calledH7121 to her husbandH376 and saidH559, “PleaseH4994 sendH7971 me oneH259 of the servantsH5288 and oneH259 of the donkeysH860, so that I may runH7323 to the manH376 of GodH430 and returnH7725.” 23But he saidH559, “WhyH4069 are you goingH1980 to him todayH3117? It is neitherH3808 29newH2320 moonH2320 norH3808 SabbathH7676.” So she just saidH559, “It will be fineH7965.” 24Then she saddledH2280 the donkeyH860 and saidH559 to her servantH5288, “DriveH5090 the donkey and goH1980 on; do not slowH6113 downH6113 30the paceH7392 for me unlessH3588H518 I tellH559 you.” 25So she wentH1980 on and cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 at 31MountH2022 CarmelH3760.
When the manH376 of GodH430 sawH7200 her at a distanceH4480H5048, he saidH559 to GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, “BeholdH2009, thatH1975 personH1975 thereH1975 is the ShunammiteH7767. 26PleaseH4994 runH7323 nowH6258 to meetH7122 her and sayH559 to her, ‘Is it going wellH7965 for you? Is it going wellH7965 for your husbandH376? Is it going wellH7965 for the childH3206?’” Then she 32answeredH559, “It is going wellH7965.” 27But she cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 33at the hillH2022 and tookH2388 holdH2388 of his feetH7272. And GehaziH1522 cameH5066 upH5066 to pushH1920 her awayH1920, but the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559, “LeaveH7503 her aloneH7503, for her soulH5315 isH4843 34troubledH4843 within her; and the LordH3068 has concealedH5956 it from me and has not informedH5046 me.” 28Then she saidH559, “Did I askH7592 for a sonH1121 from my lordH113? Did I not sayH559, ‘35Do not giveH7951 me falseH7951 hopeH7951’?”
29Then he saidH559 to GehaziH1522, “3637GetH2296H4975 readyH2296H4975 and 38takeH3947 my staffH4938 in your handH3027, and goH1980; ifH3588 you meetH4672 anyoneH376, do not 3940greetH1288 him, and ifH3588 anyoneH376 41greetsH1288 you, do not replyH6030 to him. And 42layH7760 my staffH4938 on the boy’sH5288 faceH6440.” 30The motherH517 of the boyH5288 saidH559, “43As surely as the LordH3068 livesH2416 and you yourselfH5315 liveH2416, I will not leaveH5800 you.” So he gotH6965 upH6965 and followedH1980H310 her. 31Then GehaziH1522 wentH5674 onH5674 aheadH6440 of them and laidH7760 the staffH4938 on the boy’sH5288 faceH6440, but thereH369 wasH369 noH369 soundH6963 orH369 44responseH7182. So he returnedH7725 to meetH7122 him and informedH5046 him, sayingH559, “The boyH5288 45has not awakenedH7019.”
32When ElishaH477 enteredH935 the houseH1004, beholdH2009 the boyH5288 was deadH4191, laidH7901 on his bedH4296. 33So he enteredH935 and 46shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 them bothH8147, and he prayedH6419 to the LordH3068. 34Then 47he gotH5927 upH5927 on the bed and layH7901 on the childH3206, and putH7760 his mouthH6310 on his mouthH6310, his eyesH5869 on his eyesH5869, his handsH3709 on his handsH3709, and he bentH1457 downH1457 on him; and the fleshH1320 of the childH3206 becameH2552 warmH2552. 35Then he returnedH7725 and walkedH1980 in the houseH1004 backH2008 and forthH2008 onceH259, and wentH5927 upH5927 and 48bentH1457 downH1457 on him; and the boyH5288 sneezedH2237 sevenH7651 timesH6471, then the boyH5288 openedH6491 his eyesH5869. 36And he calledH7121 GehaziH1522 and saidH559, “CallH7121 thisH2088 ShunammiteH7767.” So he calledH7121 her. And when she cameH935 to him, he saidH559, “PickH5375 upH5375 your sonH1121.” 37Then she cameH935 inH935 and fellH5307 at his feetH7272 and bowedH2331 downH2331 to the groundH776, and 49she pickedH5375 upH5375 her sonH1121 and leftH3318.
The Poisonous Stew
38When ElishaH477 returnedH7725 to 50GilgalH1537, there was 51a famineH7458 in the landH776. 52As 53the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 54were sittingH3427 in frontH6440 of him, he saidH559 to his servantH5288, “55PutH8239 on the largeH1419 potH5518 and boilH1310 stewH5138 for the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030.” 39Then oneH259 wentH3318 outH3318 into the fieldH7704 to gatherH3950 mallowH219, and foundH4672 a wildH7704 vineH1612 and gatheredH3950 from it his lapH899 fullH4393 of wildH7704 gourdsH6498; and he cameH935 and slicedH6398 them into the potH5518 of stewH5138, becauseH3588 they did not knowH3045 what they were. 40So they pouredH3332 it outH3332 for the menH376 to eatH398. But as they were eatingH398 the stewH5138, they criedH6817 outH6817 and saidH559, “You manH376 of GodH430, there is 56deathH4194 in the potH5518!” And they wereH3201 unableH3808H3201 to eatH398. 41Then he saidH559, “BringH3947 flourH7058.” 57And he threwH7993 it into the potH5518, and saidH559, “PourH3332 it outH3332 for the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398.” Then there was nothingH3808H1697 harmfulH7451 in the potH5518.
42Now a manH376 cameH935 from Baal-shalishahH1190, and broughtH935 the manH376 of GodH430 breadH3899 of the firstH1061 fruitsH1061, twentyH6242 loavesH3899 of barleyH8184 and freshH3759 grainH3759 in his sackH6861. And Elisha saidH559, “58GiveH5414 them to the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398.” 43But his attendantH8334 saidH559, “HowH4100 59am I to serveH5414H6440 thisH2088 to a hundredH3967 menH376?” Nevertheless he saidH559, “GiveH5414 them to the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398, for thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068 saysH559: ‘They shall eatH398 and have some leftH3498 overH3498.’” 44So he servedH5414H6440 it to them, and they ateH398 and 60had some leftH3498 overH3498, in accordance with the wordH1697 of the LordH3068.
