The Widow’s Oil

1Now the wifeH802 of oneH259 of the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 cried outH6817 toH413 ElishaH477H559, “Your servantH5650, my husbandH376, is deadH4191, and youH859 knowH3045 thatH3588 your servantH5650 fearedH3373 the LORDH3068. And now his creditorH5383 is comingH935 to takeH3947 my twoH8147 childrenH3206 as his slavesH5650!”

2“HowH4100 can IH6213 help you?” askedH559 ElishaH477H413. “TellH5046 me, whatH4100 do you haveH3426 in the houseH1004?”

She answeredH559, “Your servantH8198 has nothingH369H3605 in the houseH1004 butH3588H518 a jarH610 of oilH8081.”

3“GoH1980,” saidH559 Elisha, “borrowH7592 emptyH7386 jarsH3627 fromH4480 allH2351H854H3605 your neighborsH7934. Do notH408 gather just a fewH4591. 4Then go insideH935, shutH5462 the doorH1817 behind youH1157 andH1157 your sonsH1121, and pourH3332 oil intoH5921 allH3605 theseH428 jarsH3627, setting the full onesH4392 asideH5265.”

5So she leftH1980 himH854, and after she had shutH5462 the doorH1817 behind herH1157 andH1157 her sonsH1121, theyH1992 kept bringingH5066 jars to herH413, and sheH1931 kept pouringH3332. 6WhenH1961 all the jarsH3627 were fullH4390, she saidH559 toH413 her sonH1121, “Bring meH5066H413 anotherH5750H3627.”

But he repliedH559H413, “There are noH369 moreH5750 jarsH3627.” Then the oilH8081 stopped flowingH5975.

7She wentH935 and toldH5046 the manH376 of GodH430, and he saidH559, “GoH1980, sellH4376 the oilH8081, and payH7999 your debtH5386. Then youH859 and your sonsH1121 can liveH2421 on the remainderH3498.”

The Shunammite Woman

(Matthew 10:40–42)

One dayH3117 ElishaH477 wentH5674 toH413 ShunemH7766, and a prominentH1419 womanH802 who lived thereH8033 persuadedH2388 him to have a mealH398H3899. So wheneverH1961H1767 he would pass byH5674, he would stopH5493 thereH8033 to eatH398H3899.

9Then the woman saidH559 toH413 her husbandH376, “BeholdH2009, nowH4994 I knowH3045 thatH3588 the oneH1931 who oftenH8548 comes our wayH5674H5921 is a holyH6918 manH376 of GodH430. 10PleaseH4994 let us makeH6213 a smallH6996 room upstairsH5944H7023 and putH7760 in itH8033 a bedH4296, a tableH7979, a chairH3678, and a lampH4501 for him. Then whenH1961 he comesH935 to usH413, he can stayH5493 thereH8033.”

11

One dayH3117 Elisha came to visitH935H8033 and wentH5493 toH413 his upper roomH5944 to lie downH7901H8033. 12And he saidH559 toH413 GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, “CallH7121 theH2063 Shunammite womanH7767.”

And when he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 before himH6440, 13and Elisha saidH559 to Gehazi, “NowH4994 tellH559 herH413, ‘LookH2009, you have gone to allH3605 thisH2063 troubleH2729H2731 for usH413. WhatH4100 can we doH6213 for youH3426? Can we speakH1696 on your behalf toH413 the kingH4428 orH176 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635?’”

“IH595 have a homeH3427 amongH8432 my own peopleH5971,” she repliedH559.

14So he askedH559, “Then whatH4100 should be doneH6213 for her?”

“WellH61, she has noH369 sonH1121,” GehaziH1522 repliedH559, “and her husbandH376 is oldH2204.”

15“CallH7121 her,” said ElishaH559.

So Gehazi calledH7121 her, and she stoodH5975 in the doorwayH6607. 16And Elisha declaredH559, “At thisH2088 timeH4150 next yearH6256H2416, youH859 will holdH2263 a son in your armsH1121.”

“NoH408, my lordH113,” she saidH559. “Do notH408 lieH3576 to your maidservantH8198, O manH376 of GodH430.”

17But the womanH802 did conceiveH2029, and at thatH2088 timeH4150 the next yearH6256H2416 she gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, just asH834 ElishaH477 had toldH1696 herH413.

Elisha Raises the Shunammite’s Son

(Acts 20:7–12)

18AndH1961 the childH3206 grewH1431, and one dayH3117 he went outH3318 toH413 his fatherH1, who was withH413 the harvestersH7114.

19“My headH7218! My headH7218!” he complainedH559 toH413 his fatherH1.

So his father toldH559 a servantH5288, “Carry himH5375H413 toH413 his motherH517.”

20After the servant had picked him upH5375 and carried himH935 toH413 his motherH517, the boy satH3427 onH5921 her lapH1290 untilH5704 noonH6672, and then he diedH4191. 21And she went upH5927 and laid himH7901 onH5921 the bedH4296 of the manH376 of GodH430. Then she shutH5462H1157 the door and went outH3318.

22And the woman calledH7121H413 her husbandH376 and saidH559, “PleaseH4994 sendH7971 me oneH259 ofH4480 the servantsH5288 and oneH259 of the donkeysH860, that I may go quicklyH7323 toH5704 the manH376 of GodH430 and returnH7725.”

23“WhyH4069 would youH859 goH1980 to himH413 todayH3117?” he repliedH559. “It is notH3808 a New MoonH2320 or a SabbathH7676.”

“Everything is all rightH7965,” she saidH559.

24Then she saddledH2280 the donkeyH860 and toldH559H413 her servantH5288, “DriveH5090 onwardH1980; do notH408 slowH6113 the paceH7392 for me unlessH518 I tellH559 you.” 25So she set outH1980 and wentH935 toH413 the manH376 of GodH430 atH413 MountH2022 CarmelH3760H1961.

When the manH376 of GodH430 sawH7200 herH853 at a distanceH5048, he saidH559 toH413 his servantH5288 GehaziH1522, “LookH2009, there isH1975 the Shunammite womanH7767. 26PleaseH4994 run outH7323 nowH6258 to meet herH7122 and askH559, ‘Are you all rightH7965? Is your husbandH376 all rightH7965? Is your childH3206 all rightH7965?’”

And she answeredH559, “Everything is all rightH7965.”

27When she reachedH935H413 the manH376 of GodH430 atH413 the mountainH2022, she clungH2388 to his feetH7272. GehaziH1522 came overH5066 to push her awayH1920, but the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559, “Leave her aloneH7503, forH3588 her soulH5315 is in deep distressH4843, and the LORDH3068 has hiddenH5956 it from meH4480 and has notH3808 toldH5046 me.”

28Then she saidH559, “Did I ask youH7592 for a sonH1121H854, my lordH113? Didn’tH3808 I sayH559, ‘Do notH3808 deceive meH7952?’”

29So Elisha saidH559 to GehaziH1522, “Tie upH2296 your garmentH4975,1 takeH3947 my staffH4938 in your handH3027, and goH1980! IfH3588 you meetH4672 anyoneH376, do notH3808 greet himH1288, and ifH3588 anyoneH376 greets youH1288, do notH3808 answer himH6030. Then layH7760 my staffH4938 onH5921 the boy’sH5288 faceH6440.”

30And the motherH517 of the boyH5288 saidH559, “As surely as the LORDH3068 livesH2416 and as you yourselfH5315 liveH2416, I will notH518 leave youH5800.” So he got upH6965 and followedH1980 herH310.

31GehaziH1522 went onH5674 ahead of themH6440 and laidH7760 the staffH4938 onH5921 the boy’sH5288 faceH6440, but there was noH369 soundH6963 or responseH7182. So he went backH7725 to meetH7122 Elisha and toldH5046 himH559, “The boyH5288 has notH3808 awakenedH6974.”

32When ElishaH477 reachedH935 the houseH1004, there wasH2009 the boyH5288 lyingH7901 deadH4191 onH5921 his bedH4296. 33So he went inH935, closedH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 the two of themH8147, and prayedH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068.

34Then Elisha got on the bedH5927 and layH7901 onH5921 the boyH3206, mouthH6310 toH5921 mouthH6310, eyeH5869 toH5921 eyeH5869, and handH3709 toH5921 handH3709. As he stretched himself outH1457 over himH5921, the boy’sH3206 bodyH1320 became warmH2552. 35Elisha turned awayH7725 and pacedH1980 back and forthH259H2008 across the roomH1004. Then he got on the bedH5927 and stretched himself outH1457 over the boy againH5921, and the boyH5288H5704 sneezedH2237 sevenH7651 timesH6471 and openedH6491H5288 his eyesH5869.

36Elisha summonedH7121H413 GehaziH1522 and saidH559, “CallH7121 theH2063 Shunammite womanH7767.” So he called herH7121H413 and she cameH935H413.

Then Elisha saidH559, “Pick upH5375 your sonH1121.”

37She came inH935, fellH5307 atH5921 his feetH7272, and bowedH7812 to the groundH776. Then she picked upH5375 her sonH1121 and went outH3318.

Elisha Purifies the Poisonous Stew

38When ElishaH477 returnedH7725 to GilgalH1537, there was a famineH7458 in the landH776. As the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 were sittingH3427 at his feetH6440, he saidH559 to his attendantH5288, “Put onH8239 the largeH1419 potH5518 and boilH1310 some stewH5138 for the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030.”

39OneH259 of them went outH3318 toH413 the fieldH7704 to gatherH3950 herbsH219, and he foundH4672 a wildH7704 vineH1612 fromH4480 which he gatheredH3950 as many wildH7704H4393 gourdsH6498 as his garmentH899 could hold. Then he came backH935 and cut them upH6398 intoH413 the potH5518 of stewH5138, thoughH3588 no oneH3808 knewH3045 what they were.

40And they poured it outH3332 for the menH582 to eatH398H1961, but when they tastedH398 the stewH5138 theyH1992 cried outH6817H559, “There is deathH4194 in the potH5518, O manH376 of GodH430!” And they could notH3808H3201 eatH398 it.

41Then Elisha saidH559, “GetH3947 some flourH7058.” He threwH7993 it intoH413 the potH5518 and saidH559, “Pour it outH3332 for the peopleH5971 to eatH398.” And there wasH1961 nothingH3808H1697 harmfulH7451 in the potH5518.

Feeding a Hundred Men

(Matthew 15:29–39; Mark 8:1–10)

42Now a manH376 from Baal-shalishahH1190H935 cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 with a sackH6861 of twentyH6242 loavesH3899 of barleyH8184 breadH3899 from the firstH1061 ripe grainH3759.

“GiveH5414 it to the peopleH5971 to eatH398,” said ElishaH559.

43But his servantH8334 askedH559, “HowH4100 am I to setH5414 twenty loavesH2088 beforeH6440 a hundredH3967 menH376?”

“GiveH5414 it to the peopleH5971 to eatH398,” said ElishaH559, “forH3588 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: ‘They will eatH398 and have some left overH3498.’”

44So he setH5414 it before themH6440, and they ateH398 and had some left overH3498, according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068.
