The Widow’s Oil

1Now a certainH259 womanH802 of the wivesH802 of 1the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 criedH6817 out to 2ElishaH477, “Your servantH5650 my husbandH376 is deadH4191, and you knowH3045 that your servantH5650 fearedH3372 the LordH3068; and 3the creditorH5383 has comeH935 to takeH3947 my twoH8147 childrenH3206 to be his slavesH5650.” 2ElishaH477 saidH559 to her, “WhatH4100 shall I doH6213 for you? TellH5046 me, whatH4100 do you haveH3426 in the houseH1004?” And she saidH559, “Your maidservantH8198 hasH369 nothingH369H3605 in the houseH1004 exceptH3588H518 4a jarH610 of oilH8081.” 3Then he saidH559, “GoH1980, borrowH7592 vesselsH3627 at largeH2351 for yourself from allH3605 your neighborsH7934, even emptyH7386 vesselsH3627; do not getH4591 a fewH4591. 4And you shall goH935 in and shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 you and your sonsH1121, and pourH3332 out into allH3605 theseH428 vesselsH3627, and you shall setH5265 asideH5265 whatH4392 is fullH4392.” 5So she wentH1980 from him and shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 her and her sonsH1121; they were bringingH5066 the vessels to her and she pouredH3332. 6When 5the vesselsH3627 were fullH4390, she saidH559 to her sonH1121, “BringH5066 me anotherH5750 vesselH3627.” And he saidH559 to her, “ThereH369 is not oneH369 vesselH3627 moreH5750.” And the oilH8081 stoppedH5975. 7Then she cameH935 and toldH5046 6the manH376 of GodH430. And he saidH559, “GoH1980, sellH4376 the oilH8081 and payH7999 your debtH5386, and you and your sonsH1121 can liveH2421 on the restH3498.”

The Shunammite Woman

8Now there cameH1961 a dayH3117 when ElishaH477 passedH5674 overH5674 to 7ShunemH7766, whereH8033 there was a 8prominentH1419 womanH802, and she persuadedH2388 him to eatH398 9foodH3899. And so it was, as oftenH1767 as he passedH5674 by, he turnedH5493 in thereH8033 to eatH398 10foodH3899. 9She saidH559 to her husbandH376, “BeholdH2009 nowH4994, I perceiveH3045 that thisH1931 is a holyH6918 11manH376 of GodH430 passingH5674 by us continuallyH8548. 10PleaseH4994, let us 12makeH6213 a littleH6996 walledH7023 upperH5944 chamberH5944 and let us setH7760 a bedH4296 for him thereH8033, and a tableH7979 and a chairH3678 and a lampstandH4501; and it shall be, when he comesH935 to us, that he can turnH5493 in thereH8033.”

1113One dayH3117 he cameH935 thereH8033 and turnedH5493 in to the upperH5944 chamberH5944 and 14restedH7901H8033. 12Then he saidH559 to 15GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, “CallH7121 thisH2088 ShunammiteH7767.” And when he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 beforeH6440 him. 13He saidH559 to him, “SayH559 nowH4994 to her, ‘BeholdH2009, you have beenH2729 16carefulH2729 for us with allH3605 thisH2088 17careH2731; whatH4100 can I doH6213 for you? WouldH3426 you be spokenH1696 for to the kingH4428 orH176 to the captainH8269 of the armyH6635?’” And she 18answeredH559, “I liveH3427 amongH8432 my own peopleH5971.” 14So he saidH559, “WhatH4100 then is to be doneH6213 for her?” And GehaziH1522 19answeredH559, “TrulyH61 she hasH369 noH369 sonH1121 and her husbandH376 is oldH2204.” 15He saidH559, “CallH7121 her.” When he had calledH7121 her, she stoodH5975 in the doorwayH6607. 16Then he saidH559, “20At thisH2088 seasonH4150 21nextH2416 yearH6256 you will embraceH2263 a sonH1121.” And she saidH559, “NoH408, my lordH113, O manH376 of GodH430, 22do not lieH3576 to your maidservantH8198.”

17The womanH802 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 at that seasonH4150 23the nextH2416 yearH6256, as ElishaH477 had saidH1696 to her.

The Shunammite’s Son

18When the childH3206 was grownH1431, the dayH3117 cameH1961 that he wentH3318 out to his fatherH1 to the reapersH7114. 19He saidH559 to his fatherH1, “My headH7218, my headH7218.” And he saidH559 to his servantH5288, “CarryH5375 him to his motherH517.” 20When he had takenH5375 him and broughtH935 him to his motherH517, he satH3427 on her 24lapH1290 untilH5704 noonH6672, and then diedH4191. 21She wentH5927 up and 25laidH7901 him on the bedH4296 of 26the manH376 of GodH430, and shutH5462 the door behindH1157 him and wentH3318 out. 22Then she calledH7121 to her husbandH376 and saidH559, “PleaseH4994 sendH7971 me oneH259 of the servantsH5288 and oneH259 of the donkeysH860, that I may runH7323 to the manH376 of GodH430 and returnH7725.” 23He saidH559, “WhyH4069 will you goH1980 to him todayH3117? It is neitherH3808 27newH2320 moonH2320 norH3808 sabbathH7676.” And she saidH559, “It will be wellH7965.” 24Then she saddledH2280 a donkeyH860 and saidH559 to her servantH5288, “DriveH5090 and goH1980 forward; do not slowH6113 downH6113 28the paceH7392 for me unlessH3588H518 I tellH559 you.” 25So she wentH1980 and cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 to 29MountH2022 CarmelH3760.

When the manH376 of GodH430 sawH7200 her at a distanceH4480H5048, he saidH559 to GehaziH1522 his servantH5288, “BeholdH2009, 30thereH1975 is the ShunammiteH7767. 26PleaseH4994 runH7323 nowH6258 to meetH7122 her and sayH559 to her, ‘Is it wellH7965 with you? Is it wellH7965 with your husbandH376? Is it wellH7965 with the childH3206?’” And she 31answeredH559, “It is wellH7965.” 27When she cameH935 to the manH376 of GodH430 32to the hillH2022, she caughtH2388 holdH2388 of his feetH7272. And GehaziH1522 cameH5066 nearH5066 to pushH1920 her awayH1920; but the manH376 of GodH430 saidH559, “LetH7503 her aloneH7503, for her soulH5315 is 33troubledH4843 within her; and the LordH3068 has hiddenH5956 it from me and has not toldH5046 me.” 28Then she saidH559, “Did I askH7592 for a sonH1121 from my lordH113? Did I not sayH559, ‘34Do not deceiveH7951 me’?”

29Then he saidH559 to GehaziH1522, “35GirdH2296 up your loinsH4975 and 36takeH3947 my staffH4938 in your handH3027, and goH1980 your way; ifH3588 you meetH4672 anyH376 manH376, do not 37saluteH1288 him, and ifH3588 anyoneH376 salutesH1288 you, do not answerH6030 him; and 38layH7760 my staffH4938 on the lad’sH5288 faceH6440.” 30The motherH517 of the ladH5288 saidH559, “39As the LordH3068 livesH2416 and as you yourselfH5315 liveH2416, I will not leaveH5800 you.” And he aroseH6965 and followedH1980H310 her. 31Then GehaziH1522 passedH5674 on beforeH6440 them and laidH7760 the staffH4938 on the lad’sH5288 faceH6440, but thereH369 was noH369 soundH6963 orH369 40responseH7182. So he returnedH7725 to meetH7122 him and toldH5046 41him, “The ladH5288 42has not awakenedH7019.”

32When ElishaH477 cameH935 into the houseH1004, beholdH2009 the ladH5288 was deadH4191 and laidH7901 on his bedH4296. 33So he enteredH935 and 43shutH5462 the doorH1817 behindH1157 them bothH8147 and prayedH6419 to the LordH3068. 34And 44he wentH5927 up and layH7901 on the childH3206, and putH7760 his mouthH6310 on his mouthH6310 and his eyesH5869 on his eyesH5869 and his handsH3709 on his handsH3709, and he stretchedH1457 himself on him; and the fleshH1320 of the childH3206 becameH2552 warmH2552. 35Then he returnedH7725 and walkedH1980 in the houseH1004 onceH259 backH2008 and forthH2008, and wentH5927 up and 45stretchedH1457 himself on him; and the ladH5288 sneezedH2237 sevenH7651 timesH6471 and the ladH5288 openedH6491 his eyesH5869. 36He calledH7121 GehaziH1522 and saidH559, “CallH7121 thisH2088 ShunammiteH7767.” So he calledH7121 her. And when she cameH935 in to him, he saidH559, “TakeH5375 up your sonH1121.” 37Then she wentH935 in and fellH5307 at his feetH7272 and bowedH7812 herself to the groundH776, and 46she tookH5375 up her sonH1121 and wentH3318 out.

The Poisonous Stew

38When ElishaH477 returnedH7725 to 47GilgalH1537, there was 48a famineH7458 in the landH776. 49As 50the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 51were sittingH3427 beforeH6440 him, he saidH559 to his servantH5288, “52PutH8239 on the largeH1419 potH5518 and boilH1310 stewH5138 for the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030.” 39Then oneH259 wentH3318 out into the fieldH7704 to gatherH3950 herbsH219, and foundH4672 a wildH7704 vineH1612 and gatheredH3950 from it his lapH899 fullH4393 of wildH7704 gourdsH6498, and cameH935 and slicedH6398 them into the potH5518 of stewH5138, for they did not knowH3045 what they were. 40So they pouredH3332 it out for the menH376 to eatH398. And as they were eatingH398 of the stewH5138, they criedH6817 out and saidH559, “O manH376 of GodH430, there is 53deathH4194 in the potH5518.” And they were unableH3808H3201 to eatH398. 41But he saidH559, “Now bringH3947 mealH7058.” 54He threwH7993 it into the potH5518 and saidH559, “PourH3332 it out for the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398.” Then there was noH3808 harmH1697H7451 in the potH5518.

42Now a manH376 cameH935 from Baal-shalishahH1190, and broughtH935 the manH376 of GodH430 breadH3899 of the firstH1061 fruitsH1061, twentyH6242 loavesH3899 of barleyH8184 and freshH3759 earsH3759 of grainH3759 in his sackH6861. And he saidH559, “55GiveH5414 them to the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398.” 43His attendantH8334 saidH559, “WhatH4100, 56will I setH5414 thisH2088 beforeH6440 a hundredH3967 menH376?” But he saidH559, “GiveH5414 them to the peopleH5971 that they may eatH398, for thusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, ‘They shall eatH398 and have some leftH3498 overH3498.’” 44So he setH5414 it beforeH6440 them, and they ateH398 and 57had some leftH3498 overH3498, according to the wordH1697 of the LordH3068.
