2 Kings 23
American Standard Version
1And the kingH4428 sentH7971, and they gatheredH622 unto him all the eldersH2205 of JudahH3063 and of JerusalemH3389. 2And the kingH4428 wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of Jehovah, and all the menH376 of JudahH3063 and all the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389 with him, and the priestsH3548, and the prophetsH5030, and all the peopleH5971, both smallH6996 and greatH1419: and he readH7121 in their earsH241 all the wordsH1697 of the bookH5612 of the covenantH1285 which was foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of Jehovah. 3And the kingH4428 stoodH5975 by the pillarH5982, and madeH3772 a covenantH1285 before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keepH8104 his commandmentsH4687, and his testimoniesH5715, and his statutesH2708, with all his heartH3820, and all his soulH5315, to confirm the wordsH1697 of this covenantH1285 that were writtenH3789 in this bookH5612: and all the peopleH5971 stoodH5975 to the covenantH1285.
4And the kingH4428 commandedH6680 HilkiahH2518 the high priestH3548, and the priestsH3548 of the secondH4932 order, and the keepersH8104 of the threshold, to bringH3318 forthH3318 out of the templeH1964 of Jehovah all the vesselsH3627 that were madeH6213 for BaalH1168, and for the AsherahH842, and for all the hostH6635 of heavenH8064, and he burnedH8313 them without JerusalemH3389 in the fieldsH7709 of the KidronH6939, and carriedH5375 the ashes of them unto Beth-el. 5And he putH5414 down the idolatrous priestsH3649, whom the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 had ordained to burn incenseH6999 in the highH1116 placesH1116 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and in the placesH1116 roundH4524 about JerusalemH3389; them also that burned incenseH6999 unto BaalH1168, to the sunH8121, and to the moonH3394, and to the planets, and to all the hostH6635 of heavenH8064. 6And he broughtH3318 out the AsherahH842 from the houseH1004 of Jehovah, without JerusalemH3389, unto the brook KidronH6939, and burnedH8313 it at the brook KidronH6939, and beat it to dustH6083, and castH7993 the dustH6083 thereof upon the gravesH6913 of the common peopleH5971. 7And he brake down the housesH1004 of the sodomites, that were in the houseH1004 of Jehovah, whereH834 the womenH802 wove hangings for the AsherahH842. 8And he broughtH935 all the priestsH3548 out of the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and defiledH2930 the highH1116 placesH1116 whereH834 the priestsH3548 had burned incenseH6999, from GebaH1387 to Beer-sheba; and he brake down the highH1116 placesH1116 of the gatesH8179 that were at the entranceH6607 of the gateH8179 of JoshuaH3091 the governor of the cityH5892, which were on a man’sH376 left handH8040 at the gateH8179 of the cityH5892. 9NeverthelessH389 the priestsH3548 of the highH1116 placesH1116 cameH5927 not up to the altarH4196 of Jehovah in JerusalemH3389, but they did eatH398 unleavenedH4682 breadH4682 among their brethren. 10And he defiledH2930 TophethH8612, which is in the valleyH1516 of the children of HinnomH2011, that no manH376 might makeH2930 his sonH1121 or his daughterH1323 to passH5674 through the fireH784 to MolechH4432. 11And he took away the horsesH5483 that the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 had givenH5414 to the sunH8121, at the entrance of the houseH1004 of Jehovah, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the precincts; and he burnedH8313 the chariotsH4818 of the sunH8121 with fireH784. 12And the altarsH4196 that were on the roofH1406 of the upperH5944 chamberH5944 of AhazH271, which the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 had madeH6213, and the altarsH4196 which ManassehH4519 had madeH6213 in the twoH8147 courts of the houseH1004 of Jehovah, did the kingH4428 breakH5422 down, and beat them downH5422 from thence, and castH7993 the dustH6083 of them into the brook KidronH6939. 13And the highH1116 placesH1116 that were before JerusalemH3389, which were on the rightH3225 handH3225 of the mount of corruption, which SolomonH8010 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 had builded for Ashtoreth the abominationH8441 of the SidoniansH6722, and for ChemoshH3645 the abominationH8441 of MoabH4124, and for MilcomH4445 the abominationH8441 of the children of AmmonH5983, did the kingH4428 defileH2930. 14And he brake in pieces the pillarsH4676, and cutH3772 down the Asherim, and filledH4390 their placesH4725 with the bonesH6106 of menH120.
15Moreover the altarH4196 that was at Beth-el, and the highH1116 placeH1116 which JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, who madeH6213 IsraelH3478 to sinH2398, had madeH6213, even that altarH4196 and the highH1116 placeH1116 he brake downH5422; and he burnedH8313 the highH1116 placeH1116 and beat it to dustH6083, and burnedH8313 the AsherahH842. 16And as JosiahH2977 turnedH6437 himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount; and he sentH7971, and tookH3947 the bonesH6106 out of the sepulchres, and burnedH8313 them upon the altarH4196, and defiledH2930 it, according to the wordH1697 of Jehovah which the manH376 of GodH430 proclaimedH7121, who proclaimedH7121 these thingsH1697. 17Then he saidH559, What monument is that which I seeH7200? And the menH376 of the cityH5892 told him, It is the sepulchre of the manH376 of GodH430, who cameH935 from JudahH3063, and proclaimedH7121 these thingsH1697 that thou hast done against the altarH4196 of Beth-el. 18And he saidH559, Let him be; let no manH376 move his bonesH6106. So they let his bonesH6106 alone, with the bonesH6106 of the prophetH5030 that cameH935 out of SamariaH8111. 19And all the housesH1004 alsoH1571 of the highH1116 placesH1116 that were in the citiesH5892 of SamariaH8111, which the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478 had madeH6213 to provokeH3707 Jehovah to angerH3707, JosiahH2977 took awayH5493, and did to them according to all the actsH6213 that he had done in Beth-el. 20And he slew all the priestsH3548 of the highH1116 placesH1116 that were there, upon the altarsH4196, and burnedH8313 men’sH120 bonesH6106 upon them; and he returnedH7725 to JerusalemH3389.
21And the kingH4428 commandedH6680 all the peopleH5971, sayingH559, Keep the passoverH6453 unto Jehovah your GodH430, as it is writtenH3789 in this bookH5612 of the covenantH1285. 22Surely there was not kept such a passoverH6453 from the daysH3117 of the judgesH8199 that judgedH8199 IsraelH3478, nor in all the daysH3117 of the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478, nor of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063; 23but in the eighteenth yearH8141 of kingH4428 JosiahH2977 was this passoverH6453 kept to Jehovah in JerusalemH3389.
24Moreover them that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the teraphimH8655, and the idolsH1544, and all the abominationsH8251 that were seenH7200 in the landH776 of JudahH3063 and in JerusalemH3389, did JosiahH2977 put away, that he might confirm the wordsH1697 of the lawH8451 which were writtenH3789 in the bookH5612 that HilkiahH2518 the priestH3548 foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of Jehovah. 25And like unto him wasH1961 there no kingH4428 before him, that turnedH7725 to Jehovah with all his heartH3824, and with all his soulH5315, and with all his might, according to all the lawH8451 of MosesH4872; neither after him aroseH6965 there any like him.
26Notwithstanding, Jehovah turnedH7725 not from the fierceness of his greatH1419 wrath, wherewith his angerH639 was kindled against JudahH3063, because of all the provocations wherewith ManassehH4519 had provokedH3707 him. 27And Jehovah saidH559, I will removeH5493 JudahH3063 alsoH1571 out of my sight, as I have removedH5493 IsraelH3478, and I will cast off this cityH5892 which I have chosenH977, even JerusalemH3389, and the houseH1004 of which I saidH559, My nameH8034 shall beH1961 there.
28Now the restH3499 of the acts of JosiahH2977, and all that he did, are they not writtenH3789 in the bookH5612 of the chronicles of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063? 29In his daysH3117 Pharaoh-necoh kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 wentH5927 up against the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 to the riverH5104 EuphratesH6578: and kingH4428 JosiahH2977 wentH5927 against him; and Pharaoh-necoh slew him at MegiddoH4023, when he had seenH7200 him. 30And his servantsH5650 carried him in a chariot deadH4191 from MegiddoH4023, and broughtH935 him to JerusalemH3389, and buriedH6912 him in his own sepulchre. And the peopleH5971 of the landH776 tookH3947 JehoahazH3059 the sonH1121 of JosiahH2977, and anointedH4886 him, and made him kingH4427 in his father’sH1 stead.
31JehoahazH3059 was twentyH6242 and threeH7969 yearsH8141 old when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 threeH7969 monthsH2320 in JerusalemH3389: and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was HamutalH2537 the daughterH1323 of JeremiahH3414 of LibnahH3841. 32And he did that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that his fathersH1 had done. 33And Pharaoh-necoh putH5414 him in bonds at RiblahH7247 in the landH776 of HamathH2574, that he might not reignH4427 in JerusalemH3389; and putH5414 the landH776 to a tribute of a hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701, and a talentH3603 of goldH2091. 34And Pharaoh-necoh made EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of JosiahH2977 kingH4427 in the room of JosiahH2977 his fatherH1, and changedH5437 his nameH8034 to JehoiakimH3079: but he tookH3947 JehoahazH3059 awayH3947; and he cameH935 to EgyptH4714, and diedH4191 there. 35And JehoiakimH3079 gaveH5414 the silverH3701 and the goldH2091 to PharaohH6547; but he taxed the landH776 to giveH5414 the moneyH3701 according to the commandment of PharaohH6547: he exacted the silverH3701 and the goldH2091 of the peopleH5971 of the landH776, of every oneH376 according to his taxation, to giveH5414 it unto Pharaoh-necoh.
36JehoiakimH3079 was twentyH6242 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 old when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 eleven yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389: and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was Zebidah the daughterH1323 of PedaiahH6305 of RumahH7316. 37And he did that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that his fathersH1 had done.
