1 Samuel 25
Revised Version 1895
1And SamuelH8050 diedH4191; and allH3605 IsraelH3478 gatheredH6908 themselvesH6908 togetherH6908, and lamentedH5594 him, and buriedH6912 him in his houseH1004 at RamahH7414. And DavidH1732 aroseH6965, and wentH3381 downH3381 to the wildernessH4057 of ParanH6290. 2And there was a manH376 in MaonH4584, whoseH376 possessions were in CarmelH3760; and the manH376 was veryH3966 greatH1419, and he had threeH7969 thousandH505 sheepH6629, and a thousandH505 goatsH5795: and he was shearingH1494 his sheepH6629 in CarmelH3760. 3NowH802 the nameH8034 of the manH376 was NabalH5037; and the nameH8034 of his wifeH802 AbigailH26: and the womanH802 was of goodH2896 understandingH3820, and of a beautifulH3303 countenance: but the manH376 was churlish and evilH7451 in his doingsH4611; and he was of the house of Caleb. 4And DavidH1732 heardH8085 in the wildernessH4057 that NabalH5037 did shearH1494 his sheepH6629. 5And DavidH1732 sentH7971 tenH6235 youngH5288 menH5288, and DavidH1732 saidH559 unto the youngH5288 menH5288, GetH935 youH7971 upH5927 to CarmelH3760, and goH935 to NabalH5037, and greetH7965 him in my nameH8034: 6and thusH3541 shall ye sayH559 to him that liveth in prosperityH7965, PeaceH7965 be bothH3605 unto thee, and peaceH7965 be to thine houseH1004, and peaceH7965 be unto allH3605 that thou hast. 7And nowH6258 I have heardH8085 that thou hast shearersH1494: thy shepherdsH7462 have nowH6258 been with usH3588, and weH3588 didH834 them noH3808 hurt, neitherH3808 was there aught missingH6485 unto them, allH3605 the whileH1961 they were in CarmelH3760. 8AskH7592 thy youngH5288 menH5288, and they will tellH5046 thee: wherefore letH4994 the youngH5288 menH5288 findH4672 favour in thine eyesH5869; for weH3588 comeH935 in a goodH2896 dayH3117: giveH5414, I prayH4994 thee, whatsoever cometh to thine handH3027, unto thy servantsH5650, and to thy sonH1121 DavidH1732. 9And when David’sH1732 youngH5288 menH5288 cameH935, they spake to NabalH5037 accordingH413 to allH3605 thoseH428 wordsH1697 in the nameH8034 of DavidH1732, and ceased. 10And NabalH5037 answeredH559 David’sH1732 servantsH5650, and saidH559, Who is DavidH1732? and who is the sonH1121 of JesseH3448? there be manyH7235 servantsH5650 nowH3117 a daysH3117 that breakH6555 awayH6555 everyH376 manH376 from his masterH113. 11Shall I then takeH3947 my breadH3899, and my waterH4325, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearersH1494, and giveH5414 it unto menH376 of whomH834 I knowH3045 notH3808 whence they be? 12SoH935 David’sH1732 youngH5288 menH5288 turnedH2015 on their wayH1870, and wentH935 backH7725, and cameH935 and toldH5046 him according to allH3605 theseH428 wordsH1697. 13And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto his menH376, GirdH2296 ye on everyH376 manH376 his swordH2719. And they girdedH2296 on everyH376 manH376 his swordH2719; and DavidH1732 also girdedH2296 on his swordH2719: and there wentH5927 upH5927 afterH310 DavidH1732 aboutH5921 fourH702 hundredH3967 menH376; and twoH3427 hundredH3967 abodeH3427 by the stuff. 14But one of the youngH5288 menH5288 toldH5046 AbigailH26, Nabal’sH5037 wifeH802, sayingH559, BeholdH2009, DavidH1732 sentH7971 messengersH4397 outH7971 of the wildernessH4057 to saluteH1288 our masterH113; and he flew uponH802 them. 15But the menH376 were veryH3966 goodH2896 unto usH3117, and weH3117 were notH3808 hurt, neitherH3808 missedH6485 weH3117 anyH3605 thingH3605, as longH3117 as weH3117 were conversant with them, when weH3117 were in the fieldsH7704: 16they were a wallH2346 unto usH5921 bothH1571 by nightH3915 and by dayH3117, allH3605 the whileH1961 weH3117 were with them keeping the sheepH6629. 17NowH6258 therefore knowH3045 and considerH7200 whatH4100 thou wilt doH6213; for evilH7451 is determinedH3615 againstH5921 our masterH113, and againstH5921 allH3605 his houseH1004: for he is suchH1931 a sonH1121 of Belial, that one cannot speakH1696 to him. 18Then AbigailH26 madeH6213 hasteH4116, and tookH3947 twoH8147 hundredH3967 loavesH3899, and twoH8147 bottles of wineH3196, and fiveH2568 sheepH6629 ready dressed, and fiveH2568 measuresH5429 of parchedH7039 corn, and an hundredH3967 clustersH6778 of raisinsH6778, and twoH8147 hundredH3967 cakesH1690 of figsH1690, and laidH7760 them on asses. 19And sheH3808 saidH559 unto herH5046 youngH5288 menH376, GoH935 on beforeH6440 meH6440; beholdH2005, I comeH935 afterH310 youH6440. But sheH3808 toldH5046 notH3808 herH5046 husbandH376 NabalH5037. 20And it was soH1961, as sheH1931 rodeH7392 on herH5921 ass, and cameH1961 downH3381 by the covert of the mountainH2022, that, beholdH2009, DavidH1732 and his menH376 cameH1961 downH3381 againstH5921 herH5921; and sheH1931 metH6298 them. 21NowH2088 DavidH1732 had saidH559, SurelyH389 in vainH8267 have I keptH8104 allH3605 that this fellow hath in the wildernessH4057, soH3808 that nothingH3808 was missedH6485 of allH3605 that pertained unto him: and he hath returnedH7725 meH7725 evilH7451 for goodH2896. 22GodH430 doH6213 soH6213 unto the enemiesH341 of DavidH1732, and moreH3254 also, ifH518 I leaveH7604 of allH3605 that pertain to him by the morningH1242 light soH6213 muchH834 as one manH3605 child. 23And when AbigailH26 sawH7200 DavidH1732, sheH6440 hasted, and lighted offH5921 herH5921 ass, and fellH5307 beforeH6440 DavidH1732 on herH5921 faceH6440, and bowedH7812 herselfH7812 to the groundH776. 24And she fellH5307 at his feetH7272, and saidH559, UponH5921 meH4994, my lordH113, uponH5921 meH4994 be the iniquityH5771: and letH4994 thine handmaidH519, I prayH4994 thee, speakH1696 in thine earsH241, and hearH8085 thou the wordsH1697 of thine handmaidH519. 25LetH7971 notH3808 my lordH113, I prayH4994 thee, regardH7200 this manH376 of Belial, evenH3588 NabalH5037: for as his nameH8034 is, soH3651 is he; NabalH5037 is his nameH8034, and follyH5039 is with him: hut I thine handmaidH519 sawH7200 notH3808 the youngH5288 menH376 of my lordH113, whomH834 thou didst sendH7971. 26NowH6258 therefore, my lordH3068, as the LORDH3068 liveth, and as thy soulH5315 liveth, seeing the LORDH3068 hath withholden thee from bloodguiltinessH1818, and from avengingH3467 thyself with thine ownH1961 handH3027, nowH6258 therefore letH6258 thine enemiesH341, and them that seekH1245 evilH7451 to my lordH3068, be as NabalH5037. 27And nowH6258 this presentH5414 whichH834 thy servantH5288 hath broughtH935 unto my lordH113, letH5414 it be givenH5414 unto the youngH5288 menH5288 that followH1980 my lordH113. 28ForgiveH5375, I prayH4994 thee, the trespass of thine handmaidH519: for the LORDH3068 will certainlyH3588 makeH6213 my lordH3068 a sureH539 houseH1004, becauseH3588 my lordH3068 fighteth the battlesH4421 of the LORDH3068; and evilH7451 shall notH3808 be foundH4672 in thee allH3117 thy daysH3117. 29And though manH120 be risenH6965 upH6965 to pursueH7291 thee, and to seekH1245 thy soulH5315, yet the soulH5315 of my lordH3068 shall be bound in the bundle of lifeH5315 with the LORDH3068 thy GodH430; and the soulsH5315 of thine enemiesH341, them shall he sling outH1245, as from the hollowH3709 of a sling. 30And it shall comeH1961 to passH1961, when the LORDH3068 shall have doneH6213 to my lordH3068 accordingH5921 to allH3605 the goodH2896 that he hath spokenH1696 concerning thee, and shall have appointedH6680 thee princeH5057 over IsraelH3478; 31that this shall be noH3808 griefH6330 unto thee, norH3808 offence of heartH3820 unto my lordH3068, either that thou hast shedH8210 bloodH1818 causeless, or that my lordH3068 hath avengedH3467 himselfH3820: and when the LORDH3068 shall have dealt wellH3190 with my lordH3068, then rememberH2142 thine handmaidH519. 32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to AbigailH26, BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, whichH834 sentH7971 thee this dayH3117 to meetH7122 meH7971: 33and blessedH1288 be thy wisdom, and blessedH1288 be thou, whichH834 hast keptH3607 meH935 this dayH3117 from bloodguiltinessH1818, and from avengingH3467 myself with mine own handH3027. 34For in veryH5704 deedH7489, as the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, liveth, whichH834 hath withholden meH935 from hurting thee, exceptH518 thou hadst hasted and comeH935 to meetH7122 meH935, surelyH3588 there had notH518 been leftH3498 unto NabalH5037 by the morningH1242 lightH216 soH834 muchH834 as one man child. 35SoH3947 DavidH1732 receivedH3947 of herH3947 handH3027 that whichH834 sheH834 had broughtH935 him: and he saidH559 unto herH3947, GoH935 upH5927 in peaceH7965 to thine houseH1004; seeH7200, I have hearkened to thy voiceH6963, and have acceptedH3947 thy personH3027. 36And AbigailH26 cameH935 to NabalH5037; and, beholdH2009, he held a feastH4960 in his houseH1004, like the feastH4960 of a kingH4428; and Nabal’sH5037 heartH3820 was merry withinH5921 him, for he was veryH3966 drunkenH7910: wherefore sheH1931 toldH5046 him nothingH3808, lessH6996 or moreH3966, untilH5704 the morningH1242 lightH216. 37And it cameH1961 to passH1961 in the morningH1242, when the wineH3196 was goneH3318 outH3318 of NabalH5037, that his wifeH802 toldH5046 him theseH428 things, and his heartH3820 diedH4191 withinH7130 him, and he becameH1961 as a stoneH68. 38And it cameH1961 to passH1961 aboutH1961 tenH6235 daysH3117 afterH1961, that the LORDH3068 smoteH5062 NabalH5037, that he diedH4191. 39And when DavidH1732 heardH8085 that NabalH5037 was deadH4191, he saidH559, BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068, that hath pleadedH7378 the causeH7379 of my reproachH2781 from the handH3027 of NabalH5037, and hath keptH2820 backH7725 his servantH5650 from evilH7451: and the evil-doing of NabalH5037 hath the LORDH3068 returnedH7725 uponH802 his own headH7218. And DavidH1732 sentH7971 and spake concerning AbigailH26, to takeH3947 herH7971 to him to wifeH802. 40And when the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 were comeH935 to AbigailH26 to CarmelH3760, they spake unto herH413, sayingH559, DavidH1732 hath sentH7971 usH413 unto thee, to takeH3947 thee to him to wifeH802. 41And sheH6965 aroseH6965, and bowedH7812 herselfH7812 with herH559 faceH639 to the earthH776, and saidH559, BeholdH2009, thine handmaidH519 is a servantH5650 to washH7364 the feetH7272 of the servantsH5650 of my lordH113. 42And AbigailH26 hasted, and aroseH6965, and rodeH7392 uponH5921 an ass, with fiveH2568 damsels of hers that followedH310 herH5921; and sheH1980 wentH1980 afterH310 the messengersH4397 of DavidH1732, and becameH1961 his wifeH802. 43DavidH1732 also tookH3947 AhinoamH293 of JezreelH3157; and they becameH1961 bothH8147 of them his wivesH802. 44NowH5414 SaulH7586 had givenH5414 MichalH4324 his daughterH1323, David’sH1732 wifeH802, to PaltiH6406 the SonH1121 of Laish, whichH834 was of GallimH1554.
