1 Samuel 11
Revised Version 1895
1Then NahashH5176 the AmmoniteH5984 cameH5927 upH5927, and encampedH2583 againstH5921 Jabesh-gilead: and allH3605 the menH376 of JabeshH3003 saidH559 unto NahashH5176, MakeH3772 a covenantH1285 with usH413, and weH3605 will serveH5647 thee. 2And NahashH5176 the AmmoniteH5984 saidH559 unto them, On this condition will I makeH7760 it with youH3605, that allH3605 your rightH3225 eyesH5869 be putH7760 outH5921; and I will layH7760 it for a reproachH2781 uponH5921 allH3605 IsraelH3478. 3And the eldersH2205 of JabeshH3003 saidH559 unto him, Give usH413 sevenH7651 days’H3117 respite, that weH518 may sendH7971 messengersH4397 unto allH3605 the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478: and then, ifH518 there be noneH369 to saveH3467 usH413, weH518 will comeH3318 outH3318 to thee. 4Then cameH935 the messengersH4397 to GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586, and spake theseH1696 wordsH1697 in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971: and allH3605 the peopleH5971 liftedH5375 upH5375 their voiceH6963, and weptH1058. 5And, beholdH2009, SaulH7586 cameH935 followingH310 the oxenH1241 outH4480 of the fieldH7704; and SaulH7586 saidH559, WhatH4100 aileth the peopleH5971 that they weepH1058? And they toldH559 him the wordsH1697 of the menH376 of JabeshH3003. 6And the spiritH7307 of GodH430 cameH7307 mightily uponH5921 SaulH7586 when he heardH8085 thoseH428 wordsH1697, and his angerH639 was kindledH2734 greatlyH3966. 7And he tookH3947 a yokeH6776 of oxenH1241, and cutH5408 them in piecesH5408, and sentH7971 them throughoutH3605 allH3605 the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478 by the handH3027 of messengersH4397, sayingH559, Whosoever cometh notH369 forthH3318 afterH310 SaulH7586 and afterH310 SamuelH8050, soH6213 shall it be doneH6213 unto his oxenH1241. And the dreadH6343 of the LORDH3068 fellH5307 on the peopleH5971, and they cameH3318 outH3318 as one manH376. 8And he numberedH6485 them in BezekH966; and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 were threeH7969 hundredH3967 thousandH505, and the menH376 of JudahH3063 thirtyH7970 thousandH505. 9And they saidH559 unto the messengersH4397 that cameH935, ThusH3541 shall ye sayH559 unto the menH376 of Jabesh-gilead, TomorrowH4279, by the time the sunH8121 is hotH2527, ye shall have deliveranceH8668. And the messengersH4397 cameH935 and toldH5046 the menH376 of JabeshH3003; and they were gladH8055. 10Therefore the menH376 of JabeshH3003 saidH559, TomorrowH4279 weH3605 will comeH3318 outH3318 unto youH3605, and ye shall doH6213 with usH413 allH3605 that seemeth goodH2896 unto youH3605. 11And it was soH1961 on the morrow, that SaulH7586 putH7760 the peopleH5971 in threeH7969 companiesH7218; and they cameH935 intoH935 the midstH8432 of the campH4264 in the morningH1242 watchH821, and smoteH5221 the AmmonitesH5983 untilH5704 the heatH2527 of the dayH3117: and it cameH935 to passH935, that they which remainedH7604 were scatteredH6327, soH1961 that twoH8147 of them were notH3808 leftH7604 togetherH3162. 12And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, Who is he that saidH559, Shall SaulH7586 reignH4427 over usH5414? bringH5414 the menH376, that weH4191 may putH5414 them to deathH4191. 13And SaulH7586 saidH559, There shall notH3808 a manH376 be putH4191 to deathH4191 this dayH3117: for todayH3117 the LORDH3068 hath wrought deliveranceH8668 in IsraelH3478. 14Then saidH559 SamuelH8050 to the peopleH5971, Come and let usH413 go to GilgalH1537, and renewH2318 the kingdomH4410 there. 15And allH3605 the peopleH5971 wentH376 to GilgalH1537; and there they madeH8055 SaulH7586 kingH4427 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 in GilgalH1537; and there they sacrificedH2076 sacrificesH2077 of peaceH8002 offeringsH8002 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068; and there SaulH7586 and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 rejoicedH8055 greatlyH3966.
