Psalm 55
Revised Version 1895
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. Maschil of David.
Attend unto me, and answer me: I am restless in my complaint, and moan;
Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked; for they cast iniquity upon meH6030, and in anger they persecute meH6030.
My heart is sore pained withinH5921 meH6440: and the terrors of death are fallen uponH5921 meH6440.
Fearfulness and trembling are comeH5307 uponH5921 meH5921, and horror hath overwhelmedH5307 meH5921.
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongue: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go about uponH7200 the walls thereof: iniquity also and mischief are in the midst of it.
WickednessH205 is in the midstH7130 thereof: oppression and guile depart not from herH5921 streets.
For it was notH3808 an enemy that reproached meH3808; then I could have borne it: neitherH3808 was it he that hated meH3808 that didH3808 magnify himselfH3808 against meH3808; then I would have hid myself from him:
LetH1980 death comeH1980 suddenly upon them, letH1980 them goH1980 downH1980 alive intoH1980 the pit: for wickedness is in their dwelling, in the midst of them.
Evening, and morning, and at noonday, will I complain, and moan: and he shall hear my voice.
He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against meH6963: for they were many that strove with meH6963.
God shall hear, and answer them, evenH3588 he that abideth of old, Selahthe men who have no changes, and who fear notH1961 God.
He hath put forthH8085 his hands againstH3427 suchH834 as were at peace with him: he hath profaned his covenant.
His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
