Revised Version 1895

1NowH3117 kingH4428 DavidH1732 was oldH2204 and stricken in yearsH3117; and they coveredH3680 him with clothesH899, but he gat noH3808 heat. 2Wherefore his servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, LetH1961 there be soughtH1245 for my lordH113 the kingH4428 a youngH5291 virginH1330: and letH1961 herH1961 standH5975 beforeH6440 the kingH4428, and cherishH2436 him; and letH1961 herH1961 lieH7901 in thy bosomH2436, that my lordH113 the kingH4428 may get heatH2552. 3SoH935 they soughtH1245 for a fairH3303 damsel throughoutH3605 allH3605 the coasts of IsraelH3478, and foundH4672 AbishagH49 the ShunammiteH7767, and broughtH935 herH3605 to the kingH4428. 4And the damsel was veryH3966 fairH3303; and sheH3808 cherished the kingH4428, and ministeredH8334 to him; but the kingH4428 knewH3045 herH1961 notH3808. 5Then AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 exalted himselfH6440, sayingH559, I will be kingH4427: and he preparedH6213 him chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571, and fiftyH2572 menH376 to runH7323 beforeH6440 him. 6And his fatherH1 had notH3808 displeased him at anyH1571 time in sayingH559, WhyH4069 hast thou doneH6213 soH6213? and he was also a veryH3966 goodly man; and he was bornH3205 afterH310 AbsalomH53. 7And he conferredH1697 with JoabH3097 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, and with AbiatharH54 the priestH3548: and they followingH310 AdonijahH138 helpedH5826 him. 8But ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and ShimeiH8096, and ReiH7472, and the mightyH1368 menH1368 whichH834 belongedH1961 to DavidH1732, were notH3808 with AdonijahH138. 9And AdonijahH138 slew sheepH6629 and oxenH1241 and fatlingsH4806 by the stoneH68 of ZohelethH2120, whichH834 is besideH681 En-rogelH5883; and he calledH7121 allH3605 his brethrenH251 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and allH3605 the menH376 of JudahH3063 the king’sH4428 servantsH5650: 10but NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141, and the mightyH1368 menH1368, and SolomonH8010 his brotherH251, he calledH7121 notH3808. 11Then NathanH5416 spake unto Bath-sheba the motherH517 of SolomonH8010, sayingH559, Hast thou notH3808 heardH8085 that AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 doth reignH4427, and DavidH1732 our lordH113 knoweth it notH3808? 12NowH6258 therefore comeH4994, letH4994 meH4994, I prayH4994 thee, giveH3289 thee counselH6098, that thou mayest saveH4422 thine ownH5315 lifeH5315, and the lifeH5315 of thy sonH1121 SolomonH8010. 13GoH935 and getH935 thee in unto kingH4428 DavidH1732, and sayH559 unto him, Didst notH3808 thou, my lordH113, O kingH4428, swearH7650 unto thine handmaidH519, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 afterH310 meH413, and he shall sitH3427 uponH5921 my throneH3678? whyH4069 then doth AdonijahH138 reignH4427? 14BeholdH2009, whileH5750 thou yet talkest there with the kingH4428, I also will comeH935 in afterH310 thee, and confirmH4390 thy wordsH1697. 15And Bath-sheba wentH935 in unto the kingH4428 intoH413 the chamberH2315: and the kingH4428 was veryH3966 oldH2204; and AbishagH49 the ShunammiteH7767 ministeredH8334 unto the kingH4428. 16And Bath-sheba bowedH7812, and didH4100 obeisance unto the kingH4428. And the kingH4428 saidH559, WhatH4100 wouldest thou? 17And sheH1931 saidH559 unto him, My lordH3068, thou swarest by the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 unto thine handmaidH519, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 afterH310 meH5921, and he shah sitH3427 uponH5921 my throneH3678. 18And nowH6258, beholdH2009, AdonijahH138 reigneth; and thou, my lordH113 the kingH4428, knowest it notH3808: 19and he hath slain oxenH7794 and fatlingsH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and hath calledH7121 allH3605 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428, and AbiatharH54 the priestH3548, and JoabH3097 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635: but SolomonH8010 thy servantH5650 hath he notH3808 calledH7121. 20And thou, my lordH113 the kingH4428, the eyesH5869 of allH3605 IsraelH3478 are uponH5921 thee, that thou shouldest tellH5046 them who shall sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 afterH310 him. 21Otherwise it shall comeH1961 to passH1961, when my lordH113 the kingH4428 shall sleepH7901 with his fathersH1, that I and my sonH1121 SolomonH8010 shall be counted offendersH2400. 22And, loH2009, whileH5750 sheH5973 yet talkedH1696 with the kingH4428, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 cameH935 in. 23And they toldH5046 the kingH4428, sayingH559, BeholdH2009, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030. And when he was comeH935 in beforeH6440 the kingH4428, he bowedH7812 himselfH7812 beforeH6440 the kingH4428 with his faceH6440 to the groundH776. 24And NathanH5416 saidH559, My lordH113, O kingH4428, hast thou saidH559, AdonijahH138 shall reignH4427 afterH310 meH5921, and he shall sitH3427 uponH5921 my throneH3678? 25For he is goneH3381 downH3381 this dayH3117, and hath slain oxenH7794 and fatlingsH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and hath calledH7121 allH3605 the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and the captainsH8269 of the hostH6635, and AbiatharH54 the priestH3548; and, beholdH2009, they eatH398 and drinkH8354 beforeH6440 him, and sayH559, GodH559 save kingH4428 AdonijahH138. 26But meH7121, evenH3808 meH7121 thy servantH5650, and ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and thy servantH5650 SolomonH8010, hath he notH3808 calledH7121. 27Is this thingH1697 doneH1961 by my lordH113 the kingH4428, and thou hast notH3808 shewed unto thy servantsH5650 who should sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 afterH310 him? 28Then kingH4428 DavidH1732 answeredH559 and saidH559, CallH7121 meH6440 Bath-sheba. And sheH7121 cameH935 intoH935 the king’sH4428 presenceH6440, and stoodH5975 beforeH6440 the kingH4428. 29And the kingH4428 sware, and saidH559, As the LORDH3068 liveth, who hath redeemedH6299 my soulH5315 outH3605 of allH3605 adversityH6869, 30verily as I sware unto thee by the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 afterH310 meH5921, and he shall sitH3427 uponH5921 my throneH3678 in my steadH8478; verily soH3651 will I doH6213 this dayH3117: 31Then Bath-sheba bowedH7812 with herH559 faceH639 to the earthH776, and didH7812 obeisance to the kingH4428, and saidH559, Let my lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732 liveH2421 for everH5769. 32And kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559, CallH7121 meH6440 ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077. And they cameH935 beforeH6440 the kingH4428. 33And the kingH4428, saidH559 unto them, TakeH3947 with youH834 the servantsH5650 of your lordH113, and causeH7392 SolomonH8010 my sonH1121 to rideH7392 uponH5921 mineH5973 ownH5973 mute, and bringH3381 him downH3381 to GihonH1521: 34and let ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 anointH4886 him there kingH4428 over IsraelH3478: and blowH8628 ye with the trumpetH7782, and sayH559, GodH559 save kingH4428 SolomonH8010. 35Then ye shall comeH935 upH5927 afterH310 him, and he shall comeH935 and sitH3427 uponH5921 my throneH3678; for he shall be kingH4427 in my steadH8478: and I have appointedH6680 him to be princeH5057 over IsraelH3478 and over JudahH3063. 36And BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 answeredH559 the kingH4428, and saidH559, AmenH543: the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of my lordH3068 the kingH4428, sayH559 soH3651 too. 37As the LORDH3068 hath been with my lordH3068 the kingH4428, evenH3651 soH3651 be he with SolomonH8010, and makeH1431 his throneH3678 greaterH1431 thanH4428 the throneH3678 of my lordH3068 kingH4428 DavidH1732. 38SoH3381 ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and the Cherethites and the PelethitesH6432, wentH3381 downH3381, and caused SolomonH8010 to rideH7392 uponH5921 kingH4428 David’sH1732 muleH6506, and broughtH3381 him to GihonH1521. 39And ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081 outH4480 of the TentH168, and anointedH4886 SolomonH8010. And they blewH8628 the trumpetH7782; and allH3605 the peopleH5971 saidH559, GodH559 save kingH4428 SolomonH8010. 40And allH3605 the peopleH5971 cameH5927 upH5927 afterH310 him, and the peopleH5971 piped with pipes, and rejoicedH8056 with greatH1419 joyH8057, soH5927 that the earthH776 rent with the soundH6963 of them. 41And AdonijahH138 and allH3605 the guestsH7121 that were with him heardH8085 it as they had madeH7121 an endH3615 of eatingH398. And when JoabH3097 heardH8085 the soundH6963 of the trumpetH7782, he saidH559, Wherefore is this noiseH6963 of the cityH7151 being in an uproarH1993? 42WhileH5750 he yet spake, beholdH2009, JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of AbiatharH54 the priestH3548 cameH935: and AdonijahH138 saidH559, ComeH935 in; for thou art a worthyH2428 manH376, and bringest goodH2896 tidingsH1319. 43And JonathanH3129 answeredH559 and saidH559 to AdonijahH138, Verily our lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732 hath made SolomonH8010 kingH4428: 44and the kingH4428 hath sentH7971 with him ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and the CherethitesH3774 and the PelethitesH6432, and they have causedH854 him to rideH7392 uponH5921 the king’sH4428 muleH6506: 45and ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 have anointedH4886 him kingH4428 in GihonH1521: and they are comeH5927 upH5927 from thence rejoicingH8056, soH5927 that the cityH7151 rang again. This is the noiseH6963 that ye have heardH8085. 46And also SolomonH8010 sitteth on the throneH3678 of the kingdomH4410. 47And moreoverH1571 the king’sH4428 servantsH5650 cameH935 to blessH1288 our lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732, sayingH559, Thy GodH430 makeH1431 the nameH8034 of SolomonH8010 betterH3190 thanH5921 thy nameH8034, and makeH1431 his throneH3678 greaterH1431 thanH5921 thy throneH3678, and the kingH4428 bowedH7812 himselfH7812 uponH5921 the bedH4904. 48And also thusH3602 saidH559 the kingH4428, BlessedH1288 be the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, whichH834 hath givenH5414 one to sitH3427 on my throneH3678 this dayH3117, mine eyesH5869 evenH1571 seeingH7200 it. 49And allH3605 the guestsH7121 of AdonijahH138 were afraidH2729, and roseH6965 upH6965, and wentH6965 everyH3605 manH376 his wayH1870. 50And AdonijahH138 fearedH3372 becauseH6440 of SolomonH8010; and he aroseH6965, and wentH6965, and caughtH2388 holdH2388 on the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196. 51And it was toldH5046 SolomonH8010, sayingH559, BeholdH2009, AdonijahH138 feareth kingH4428 SolomonH8010: for, loH2009, he hath laid holdH270 on the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196, sayingH559, LetH5046 kingH4428 SolomonH8010 swearH7650 unto meH5046 this dayH3117 that he wilt notH518 slayH4191 his servantH5650 with the swordH2719. 52And SolomonH8010 saidH559, IfH518 he shall shew himselfH3808 a worthyH2428 manH1121, there shall notH3808 an hairH8185 of him fallH5307 to the earthH776: but ifH518 wickednessH7451 be foundH4672 in him, he shall dieH4191. 53SoH7971 kingH4428 SolomonH8010 sentH7971, and they broughtH935 him downH3381 from the altarH4196. And he cameH935 and didH7812 obeisance to kingH4428 SolomonH8010: and SolomonH8010 saidH559 unto him, GoH935 to thine houseH1004.
