Psalm 56

Revised Version 1895

For the Chief Musician; set to Jonath elem rehokim. A Psalm of David: Michtam: when the Philistines took him in Gath.

Be merciful unto meH5921, O God; for man would swallow meH5921 upH5921: all the day longH7350 he fighting oppresseth meH5921.
Mine enemies would swallow meH3605 upH3605 allH3605 the dayH3117 longH3117: for they be many that fightH3898 proudly againstH3898 meH3605.
WhatH3588 time I am afraid, I will put my trust in thee.
In GodH413 I will praise his word: in GodH413 have I putH982 my trustH982, I will not be afraidH3372; whatH3372 can flesh doH589 unto meH413?
AllH1697 the day longH4100 they wrest my wordsH1697: allH1697 their thoughtsH1697 are againstH1697 meH1697 for evil.
They gather themselvesH7451 togetherH5921, they hide themselvesH7451, they mark my steps, evenH5921 as they have waited for my soul.
Shall they escape by iniquity? in anger cast down the peoples, O God.
Thou tellest my wanderings: putH3381 thou my tears intoH5921 thy bottle; are they not in thy book?
Then shall mine enemies turnH7760 back in the day that I call: this I know, that GodH3808 is for meH7760.
In GodH430 will I praiseH3588 his word: in the LORD will I praiseH3588 his word.
In GodH430 have I put my trust, I will not be afraid; whatH1697 can man do unto meH1697?
Thy vows are upon meH3808, O GodH430: I will render thank offerings unto thee.
For thou hast delivered my soul from death: hast thou not delivered my feet from falling? that I may walk beforeH5921 GodH430 in the light of the living.
