Psalm 44

Revised Version 1895

For the Chief Musician; a Psalm of the sons of Korah. Maschil.

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the days of oldH1121.
Thou didst drive outH6466 the nations with thy hand, and plantedst them in; thou didst afflict the peoples, and didst spread them abroad.
For they gat not the land in possessionH3423 by their own sword, neither did their own armH3027 save them: but thy right handH3027, and thine armH3027, and the light of thy countenance, becauseH3027 thou hadst a favour unto them.
Thou art my King, O GodH3808: command deliveranceH3467 for Jacob.
Through thee will we push downH6680 our adversaries: through thy name will we tread them under that rise upH4428 againstH3290 us.
For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save meH6965.
But thou hast savedH3467 usH3588 from our adversaries, and hast putH982 them to shame that hate usH3588.
In God have weH3588 made our boast allH954 the day long, and weH3588 will give thanks unto thy name for ever. Selah
But nowH3117 thou hast cast usH3117 off, and brought usH3117 to dishonour; and goest not forth with our hosts.
Thou makest us to turnH637 backH3318 from the adversary: and they whichH6635 hate us spoil for themselves.
Thou hast given usH7725 like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered usH7725 among the nations.
Thou sellest thy peopleH1471 for nought, and hast not increased thy wealth by their price.
Thou makest usH5971 a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about usH5971.
Thou makest usH7760 a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
All the day long is my dishonour before meH7760, and the shame of my face hath covered meH7760,
For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger.
All this is come upon usH6440; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
Our heart is notH3808 turned backH935, neitherH3808 have our steps declined from thy wayH2063;
That thou hast sore broken usH4480 in the place of jackals, and covered usH4480 with the shadow of death.
IfH3588 weH3588 have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god;
Shall notH518 GodH430 search this outH6566? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
YeaH3588, for thy sake are weH3588 killed allH3045 the day long; weH3588 are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Awake, whyH3588 sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast usH5921 notH3588 offH5921 for ever.
Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
For our soul is bowed downH6440 to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
Rise up for our help, and redeem usH3588 for thy lovingkindness’ sake.
