Joseph’s Success in Egypt

1Now Josephוְיוֹסֵ֖ףve.yo.SefH3130had been takenH3381downהוּרַ֣דhu.RadH3381to Egyptמִצְרָ֑יְמָהmitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714;and Potipharפּוֹטִיפַר֩po.ti.FarH6318,an Egyptianמִצְרִ֔יmitz.RiH4713officerסְרִ֨יסse.RisH5631of Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֜הpar.'OhH6547,the captainשַׂ֤רsarH8269of the bodyguardהַטַּבָּחִים֙ha.ta.ba.ChimH2876,boughtוַיִּקְנֵ֡הוּvai.yik.Ne.huH7069him from theIshmaelitesהַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔יםhai.yish.me.'e.LimH3459,whoאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834had takenH3381him downהוֹרִדֻ֖הוּho.ri.Du.huH3381thereשָֽׁמָּה׃Sha.mahH8033.

2Andthe Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was with Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130,so he becameH1961asuccessfulמַצְלִ֑יחַmatz.Li.achH6743manאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376.And he was in the houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004of his masterאֲדֹנָ֖יו'a.do.NavH113,the Egyptianהַמִּצְרִֽי׃ha.mitz.RiH4713.

3Now his masterאֲדֹנָ֔יו'a.do.NavH113sawוַיַּ֣רְאvai.Yar'H7200that the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068was with him and thatthe Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068made allוְכֹל֙ve.KholH3605that he didעֹשֶׂ֔ה'o.SehH6213prosperמַצְלִ֥יחַmatz.Li.achH6743in his handבְּיָדֽוֹ׃be.ya.DoH3027.

4So Josephיוֹסֵ֥ףyo.SefH3130foundוַיִּמְצָ֨אvai.yim.Tza'H4672favorחֵ֛ןchenH2580in his sightבְּעֵינָ֖יוbe.'ei.NavH5869andbecameH8334his personalH8334servantH8334;and he madeH6485him overseerH6485overעַל־'al-H5921his houseבֵּית֔וֹbei.ToH1004, andputנָתַ֥ןna.TanH5414him in chargeבְּיָדֽוֹ׃be.ya.DoH3027ofallוְכָל־ve.kholH3605that he ownedיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426.

5It cameוַיְהִ֡יvay.HiH1961aboutוַיְהִ֞יvay.HiH1961that from the timeמֵאָז֩me.'AzH227he madeH6485him overseerH6485in his houseבְּבֵית֗וֹbe.vei.ToH1004and overוְעַל֙ve.'AlH5921allכָּל־kol-H3605that he ownedיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426,the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068blessedוַיְבָ֧רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288the Egyptian’sהַמִּצְרִ֖יha.mitz.RiH4713houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004on accountבִּגְלַ֣לbig.LalH1558of Josephיוֹסֵ֑ףyo.SefH3130; sothe Lord’sיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068blessingבִּרְכַּ֤תbir.KatH1293was upon allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605that he ownedיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426,in the houseבַּבַּ֖יִתba.Ba.yitH1004and in the fieldוּבַשָּׂדֶֽה׃u.va.sa.DehH7704.

6So he leftוַיַּעֲזֹ֣בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800Josephיוֹסֵף֒yo.SefH3130in chargeבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of everythingכָּל־kol-H3605that he owned; and with him there he did notconcernיָדַ֤עya.Da'H3045himself with anythingמְא֔וּמָהme.'U.mahH3972exceptכִּ֥י אִם־ki 'im-H3588 H518thefoodהַלֶּ֖חֶםha.Le.chemH3899whichH834heateאוֹכֵ֑ל'o.KhelH398.Now Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130washandsomeH3303in formתֹ֖אַרTo.'arH8389and appearanceמַרְאֶֽה׃mar.'EhH4758.

7And it cameH1961aboutH1961afterאַחַר֙'a.CharH310theseהָאֵ֔לֶּהha.'E.lehH428eventsהַדְּבָרִ֣יםha.de.va.RimH1697that his master’sאֲדֹנָ֛יו'a.do.NavH113wifeאֵֽשֶׁת־'e.shet-H802hadוַתִּשָּׂ֧אva.ti.Sa'H5375her eyesעֵינֶ֖יהָ'ei.Nei.haH5869on Josephיוֹסֵ֑ףyo.SefH3130,and she saidוַתֹּ֖אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Sleepשִׁכְבָ֥הshikh.VahH7901with me.”

8Buthe refusedוַיְמָאֵ֓ן׀vay.ma.'EnH3985and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to his master’sאֲדֹנָ֔יו'a.do.NavH113wifeאֵ֣שֶׁת'E.shetH802, “Lookהֵ֣ןhenH2005, with me here,my masterאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113does not concernיָדַ֥עya.Da'H3045himself with anythingמַה־mah-H4100in the houseבַּבָּ֑יִתba.Ba.yitH1004, and he hasputנָתַ֥ןna.TanH5414me in chargeבְּיָדִֽי׃be.ya.DiH3027of allוְכֹ֥לve.KholH3605that he ownsיֶשׁ־yesh-H3426.

9ThereH369isH369noH369one greaterגָד֜וֹלga.DolH1419in thisH2088houseבַּבַּ֣יִתba.Ba.yitH1004thanH4480I, and he has withheldחָשַׂ֤ךְcha.SakhH2820nothingוְלֹֽא־ מְא֔וּמָהve.lo'- me.'U.mahH3808 H3972from me exceptכִּ֥י אִם־ki 'im-H3588 H518you, becauseבַּאֲשֶׁ֣רba.'a.SherH834you are his wifeאִשְׁתּ֑וֹ'ish.ToH802.Howוְאֵ֨יךְve.'EikhH349then could I doאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֜ה'e.'e.SehH6213thisH2088greatהַגְּדֹלָה֙ha.ge.do.LahH1419evilH7463, andsinוְחָטָ֖אתִיve.cha.Ta.tiH2398against Godלֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃Le.lo.HimH430?”

10Though she spokeכְּדַבְּרָ֥הּke.da.be.RahH1696to Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130dayי֣וֹם׀YomH3117after dayי֑וֹםYomH3117,he did not listenשָׁמַ֥עsha.Ma'H8085to her to lieלִשְׁכַּ֥בlish.KavH7901besideאֶצְלָ֖הּ'etz.LahH681her or be with her.

11Now it happenedוַיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961oneהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088dayכְּהַיּ֣וֹםke.hai.YomH3117that he wentוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935into the houseהַבַּ֖יְתָהha.Bay.tahH1004to doלַעֲשׂ֣וֹתla.'a.SotH6213his workמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹme.lakh.ToH4399,and noneוְאֵ֨יןve.'EinH369 H376of the peopleH376of the householdהַבַּ֛יִתha.Ba.yitH1004was thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033insideבַּבָּֽיִת׃ba.Ba.yitH1004.

12So she grabbedוַתִּתְפְּשֵׂ֧הוּva.tit.pe.Se.huH8610him by his garmentבְּבִגְד֛וֹbe.vig.DoH899,sayingלֵאמֹ֖רle.MorH559, “Sleepשִׁכְבָ֣הshikh.VahH7901with me!” But he leftוַיַּעֲזֹ֤בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800his garmentבִּגְדוֹ֙big.DoH899in her handבְּיָדָ֔הּbe.ya.DahH3027and fledוַיָּ֖נָסvai.Ya.nosH5127,and wentוַיֵּצֵ֥אvai.ye.Tze'H3318outsideהַחֽוּצָה׃ha.Chu.tzahH2351.

13When she sawכִּרְאוֹתָ֔הּkir.'o.TahH7200that he had leftעָזַ֥ב'a.ZavH5800his garmentבִּגְד֖וֹbig.DoH899in her handבְּיָדָ֑הּbe.ya.DahH3027and had fledוַיָּ֖נָסvai.Ya.nosH5127outsideהַחֽוּצָה׃ha.Chu.tzahH2351,

14she calledוַתִּקְרָ֞אva.tik.Ra'H7121to the menאִ֥ישׁ'ishH376of her householdבֵיתָ֗הּvei.TahH1004and saidH559to them, “Seeרְא֗וּre.'UH7200,he has broughtH935inH935aHebrewעִבְרִ֖י'iv.RiH5680to us to makeH6711funH6711of us; he cameH935inH935to me to sleepלִשְׁכַּ֣בlish.KavH7901with me, and Iscreamedוָאֶקְרָ֖א בְּק֥וֹל גָּדֽוֹל׃va.'ek.Ra' be.Kol ga.DolH7121 H6963 H1419.

15When he heardכְשָׁמְע֔וֹkhe.sha.me.'OH8085that I raisedהֲרִימֹ֥תִיha.ri.Mo.tiH7311my voiceקוֹלִ֖יko.LiH6963andscreamedוָאֶקְרָ֑אva.'ek.Ra'H7121,he leftוַיַּעֲזֹ֤בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800his garmentבִּגְדוֹ֙big.DoH899besideאֶצְלִ֔י'etz.LiH681me and fledוַיָּ֖נָסvai.Ya.nosH5127and wentוַיֵּצֵ֥אvai.ye.Tze'H3318outsideהַחֽוּצָה׃ha.Chu.tzahH2351.”

16So sheleftוַתַּנַּ֥חva.ta.NachH5117his garmentבִּגְד֖וֹbig.DoH899besideאֶצְלָ֑הּ'etz.LahH681her untilעַד־'ad-H5704his masterאֲדֹנָ֖יו'a.do.NavH113cameבּ֥וֹאBo'H935homeבֵּיתֽוֹ׃bei.ToH1004.

17Then shespokeוַתְּדַבֵּ֣רva.te.da.BerH1696to himwith theseהָאֵ֖לֶּהha.'E.lehH428wordsכַּדְּבָרִ֥יםka.de.va.RimH1697: “The Hebrewהָֽעִבְרִ֛יha.'iv.RiH5680slaveהָעֶ֧בֶדha.'E.vedH5650,whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834you broughtH935to us, cameH935inH935to me to makeH6711funH6711of me;

18but when I raisedכַּהֲרִימִ֥יka.ha.ri.MiH7311my voiceקוֹלִ֖יko.LiH6963andscreamedוָאֶקְרָ֑אva.'ek.Ra'H7121,he leftוַיַּעֲזֹ֥בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800his garmentבִּגְד֛וֹbig.DoH899besideאֶצְלִ֖י'etz.LiH681me and fledוַיָּ֥נָסvai.Ya.nosH5127outsideהַחֽוּצָה׃ha.Chu.tzahH2351.”

19Now when his masterאֲדֹנָ֜יו'a.do.NavH113heardכִשְׁמֹ֨עַkhish.Mo.a'H8085the wordsH1697of his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834she spokeדִּבְּרָ֤הdi.be.RahH1696to him, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Thisהָאֵ֔לֶּהha.'E.lehH1697 H428is whatH1697your slaveעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ'av.De.khaH5650didעָ֥שָׂהּ'A.sahH6213to me,”his angerאַפּֽוֹ׃'a.PoH639burnedוַיִּ֖חַרvai.Yi.charH2734.

20So Joseph’sיוֹסֵ֜ףyo.SefH3130masterאֲדֹנֵ֨י'a.do.NeiH113tookוַיִּקַּח֩vai.yi.KachH3947him andputוַֽיִּתְּנֵ֙הוּ֙vai.yi.te.Ne.huH5414him into the prisonבֵּ֣ית הַסֹּ֔הַרbeit ha.So.harH1004 H5470,the placeמְק֕וֹםme.KomH4725whereאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the king’sהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428prisonersאֲסִירֵ֥י'a.su.reiH615were confinedאֲסוּרִ֑ים'a.su.RimH631;and he was thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033in the prisonבְּבֵ֥ית הַסֹּֽהַר׃be.Veit ha.So.harH1004 H5470.

21Butthe Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was with Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130and extendedוַיֵּ֥טvai.YetH5186kindnessחָ֑סֶדCha.sedH2617to him, andgaveוַיִּתֵּ֣ןvai.yi.TenH5414him favorחִנּ֔וֹchi.NoH2580in the sightבְּעֵינֵ֖יbe.'ei.NeiH5869of the wardenשַׂ֥רsarH8269of the prisonבֵּית־ הַסֹּֽהַר׃beit- ha.So.harH1004 H5470.

22And the wardenשַׂ֤רsarH8269of the prisonבֵּית־ הַסֹּ֙הַר֙beit- ha.So.harH1004 H5470putוַיִּתֵּ֞ןvai.yi.TenH5414Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130in chargeבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of allכָּל־kol-H3605the prisonersהָ֣אֲסִירִ֔םha.'a.si.RimH615whoאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834were in the prisonבְּבֵ֣ית הַסֹּ֑הַרbe.Veit ha.So.harH1004 H5470;so that whateverכָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֤רkol- 'a.SherH3605 H834was doneעֹשִׂים֙'o.SimH6213thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033, he wasresponsibleעֹשֶֽׂה׃'o.SehH6213for it.

23The wardenשַׂ֣רsarH8269of the prisonבֵּית־ הַסֹּ֗הַרbeit- ha.So.harH1004 H5470did not superviseרֹאֶ֤הro.'EhH7200anythingכָּל־ מְא֙וּמָה֙kol- me.'U.mahH3605 H3972under Joseph’s authorityבְּיָד֔וֹbe.ya.DoH3027,becauseבַּאֲשֶׁ֥רba.'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068was with him; and,the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068made whateverוַֽאֲשֶׁר־va.'a.Sher-H834he didעֹשֶׂ֖ה'o.SehH6213prosperמַצְלִֽיחַ׃ סmatz.Li.achH6743.
