1NowSaraiוְשָׂרַי֙ve.sa.RaiH8297,Abram’sאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87wifeאֵ֣שֶׁת'E.shetH802,had not borneH3205him aH3205childH3205, but she hadan Egyptianמִצְרִ֖יתmitz.RitH4713slaveH8198womanH8198whose nameוּשְׁמָ֥הּu.she.MahH8034was Hagarהָגָֽר׃ha.GarH1904.

2So Saraiשָׂרַ֜יsa.RaiH8297saidוַתֹּ֨אמֶרva.To.merH559to Abramאַבְרָ֗ם'av.RamH87, “Seeהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009nowנָ֞אna'H4994,the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068has preventedעֲצָרַ֤נִי'a.tza.Ra.niH6113me from bearingמִלֶּ֔דֶתmi.Le.detH3205children.Pleaseנָא֙na'H4994haveH935relationsH935withH935my slaveH8198womanH8198;perhapsאוּלַ֥י'u.LaiH194I willobtainH1129childrenH1129throughמִמֵּ֑נָּהmi.Me.nahH4480her.” And Abramאַבְרָ֖ם'av.RamH87listenedוַיִּשְׁמַ֥עvai.yish.Ma'H8085to the voiceלְק֥וֹלle.KolH6963of Saraiשָׂרָֽי׃sa.RaiH8297.

3And soafterH4480Abramאַבְרָ֗ם'av.RamH87had livedלְשֶׁ֥בֶתle.She.vetH3427tenעֶ֣שֶׂר'E.serH6235yearsשָׁנִ֔יםsha.NimH8141in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנָ֑עַןke.Na.'anH3667,Abram’sאַבְרָ֖ם'av.RamH87wifeאֵֽשֶׁת־'e.shet-H802Saraiשָׂרַ֣יsa.RaiH8297tookוַתִּקַּ֞חva.ti.KachH3947Hagarהָגָ֤רha.GarH1904the Egyptianהַמִּצְרִית֙ha.mitz.RitH4713,her slaveH8198womanH8198,and gaveוַתִּתֵּ֥ןva.ti.TenH5414her to her husbandאִישָׁ֖הּ'i.ShahH376Abramלְאַבְרָ֥םle.'av.RamH87as his wifeלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.

4Then he hadH935relationsH935withH935Hagarהָגָ֖רha.GarH1904,and she conceivedוַתַּ֑הַרva.Ta.harH2029; and when HagarbecameH7200awareH7200that she had conceivedהָרָ֔תָהha.Ra.tahH2029,her mistressגְּבִרְתָּ֖הּge.vir.TahH1404wasH7043insignificantוַתֵּקַ֥לva.te.KalH7043in her sightבְּעֵינֶֽיהָ׃be.'ei.Nei.haH5869.

5So Saraiשָׂרַ֣יsa.RaiH8297saidוַתֹּ֨אמֶרva.To.merH559to Abramאַבְרָם֮'av.RamH87, “May the wrongחֲמָסִ֣יcha.ma.SiH2555done to me be upon you! I putנָתַ֤תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414my slaveH8198womanH8198into yourarmsבְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָbe.chei.Ke.chaH2436,but when she sawוַתֵּ֙רֶא֙va.Te.re'H7200that she had conceivedהָרָ֔תָהha.Ra.tahH2029,I wasH7043insignificantוָאֵקַ֖לva.'e.KalH7043in hersightבְּעֵינֶ֑יהָbe.'ei.Nei.haH5869.May the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068judgeיִשְׁפֹּ֥טyish.PotH8199betweenH996you and me.”

6But Abramאַבְרָ֜ם'av.RamH87saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Saraiשָׂרַ֗יsa.RaiH8297, “Lookהִנֵּ֤הhi.NehH2009,your slaveH8198womanH8198is in yourpowerבְּיָדֵ֔ךְbe.ya.DekhH3027;doעֲשִׂי־'a.si-H6213to her whatH2896isH2896goodהַטּ֣וֹבha.TovH2896in yoursightבְּעֵינָ֑יִךְbe.'ei.Na.yikhH5869.”So Saraiשָׂרַ֔יsa.RaiH8297treatedH6031her harshlyH6031, andshe fledוַתִּבְרַ֖חva.tiv.RachH1272from her presenceמִפָּנֶֽיהָ׃mi.pa.Nei.haH6440.

7Nowthe angelמַלְאַ֧ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068foundוַֽיִּמְצָאָ֞הּvai.yim.tza.'AhH4672her by a springH5871of waterהַמַּ֖יִםha.Ma.yimH4325in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֑רba.mid.BarH4057,by the springH5871on the wayבְּדֶ֥רֶךְbe.De.rekhH1870toShurשֽׁוּר׃ShurH7793.

8He saidוַיֹּאמַ֗רvai.yo.MarH559, “Hagarהָגָ֞רha.GarH1904,Sarai’sשָׂרַ֛יsa.RaiH8297slaveH8198womanH8198,from whereאֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֥ה'ei- mi.ZehH335 H2088have you comeבָ֖אתvatH935,and whereוְאָ֣נָהve.'A.nahH575are you goingתֵלֵ֑כִיte.Le.khiH1980?”And she saidוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559, “I am fleeingבֹּרַֽחַת׃bo.Ra.chatH1272from the presenceמִפְּנֵי֙mi.pe.NeiH6440of my mistressגְּבִרְתִּ֔יge.vir.TiH1404Saraiשָׂרַ֣יsa.RaiH8297.”

9So the angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “Returnשׁ֖וּבִיShu.viH7725to your mistressגְּבִרְתֵּ֑ךְge.vir.TekhH1404,and submitוְהִתְעַנִּ֖יve.hit.'a.NiH6031to her authorityיָדֶֽיהָ׃ya.Dei.haH3027.”

10Theangelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068also saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her, “I will greatlyהַרְבָּ֥הhar.BahH7235multiplyאַרְבֶּ֖ה'ar.BehH7235yourdescendantsזַרְעֵ֑ךְzar.'EkhH2233so thatthey will be tooוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808manyמֵרֹֽב׃me.RoH7230to countיִסָּפֵ֖רyi.sa.FerH5608.”

11The angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her further, “Beholdהִנָּ֥ךְhi.NakhH2009,you are pregnantהָרָ֖הha.RahH2030,And you will giveH3205birthH3205to a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121;And you shall nameוְקָרָ֤את שְׁמוֹ֙ve.ka.Rat she.MoH7121 H8034himIshmaelיִשְׁמָעֵ֔אלyish.ma.'ElH3458,Becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068has heardשָׁמַ֥עsha.Ma'H8085your afflictionעָנְיֵֽךְ׃'a.ne.YekhH6040.

12But he will be awildפֶּ֣רֶאPe.re'H6501donkeyH6501of a manאָדָ֔ם'a.DamH120;His handיָד֣וֹya.DoH3027will beagainst everyoneבַכֹּ֔לva.KolH3605,And everyone’sכֹּ֖לkolH3605handוְיַ֥דve.YadH3027will be against him;And he will liveיִשְׁכֹּֽן׃yish.KonH7931inH5921 H6440defianceH5921 H6440of allכָל־khol-H3605his brothersאֶחָ֖יו'e.ChavH251.”

13Then she calledוַתִּקְרָ֤אva.tik.Ra'H7121the nameשֵׁם־shem-H8034of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068who spokeהַדֹּבֵ֣רha.do.VerH1696to her, “You area Godאֵ֣ל'elH410whoH7210seesרָאִ֖יתִיra.'I.tiH7200me”; for she saidאָֽמְרָ֗ה'a.me.RahH559, “Have I evenהֲגַ֥םha.GamH1571seenרֹאִֽי׃ro.'IH7200Himhereהֲלֹ֛םha.LomH1988and livedafterאַחֲרֵ֥י'a.cha.ReiH310He sawH7210me?”

14Thereforeעַל־ כֵּן֙'al- kenH5921 H3651the wellלַבְּאֵ֔רla.be.'ErH875was calledקָרָ֣אka.Ra'H7121Beer-lahai-roiH883;beholdהִנֵּ֥הhi.NehH2009,it is betweenH996Kadeshקָדֵ֖שׁka.DeshH6946and Beredבָּֽרֶד׃Ba.redH1260.

15So Hagarהָגָ֛רha.GarH1904boreH3205a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121to Abramלְאַבְרָ֖םle.'av.RamH87;and Abramאַבְרָ֧ם'av.RamH87namedוַיִּקְרָ֨א שֶׁם־vai.yik.Ra' shem-H7121 H8034his sonבְּנ֛וֹbe.NoH1121,to whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834Hagarהָגָ֖רha.GarH1904gaveH3205birthH3205,Ishmaelיִשְׁמָעֵֽאל׃yish.ma.'ElH3458.

16AbramH87waseighty-sixשְׁמֹנִ֥יםshe.mo.NimH8084yearsH8141oldבֶּן־ben-H1121when Hagarהָגָ֥רha.GarH1904boreבְּלֶֽדֶת־be.le.det-H3205Ishmaelיִשְׁמָעֵ֖אלyish.ma.'ElH3458to him.
