Jacob Moves to Bethel

1Then Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290, “Ariseק֛וּםkumH6965,goעֲלֵ֥ה'a.LehH5927upH5927toBethelH1008and liveוְשֶׁב־ve.shev-H3427thereשָׁ֑םShamH8033,and makeוַעֲשֵׂה־va.'a.seh-H6213an altarמִזְבֵּ֔חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁ֣םshamH8033toGodלָאֵל֙la.'ElH410,who appearedהַנִּרְאֶ֣הha.nir.'EhH7200to youwhen you fledבְּבָרְחֲךָ֔be.va.re.cha.KhaH1272from your brotherאָחִֽיךָ׃'a.Chi.khaH251Esauעֵשָׂ֥ו'e.SavH6215.”

2So Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to hishouseholdבֵּית֔וֹbei.ToH1004and to allכָּל־kol-H3605whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were with him, “Removeהָסִ֜רוּha.Si.ruH5493the foreignהַנֵּכָר֙ha.ne.KharH5236godsאֱלֹהֵ֤י'e.lo.HeiH430whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834are amongבְּתֹכְכֶ֔םbe.to.khe.KhemH8432you, andpurifyוְהִֽטַּהֲר֔וּve.hi.ta.ha.RuH2891yourselves and changeוְהַחֲלִ֖יפוּve.ha.cha.Li.fuH2498your garmentsשִׂמְלֹתֵיכֶֽם׃sim.lo.tei.KhemH8071;

3and let’s ariseוְנָק֥וּמָהve.na.Ku.mahH6965and goוְנַעֲלֶ֖הve.na.'a.LehH5927upH5927to BethelH1008,and I will makeוְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ve.'e.'e.seh-H6213an altarמִזְבֵּ֗חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָּׁ֣םshamH8033to Godלָאֵ֞לla.'ElH410,who answeredהָעֹנֶ֤הha.'o.NehH6030me on the dayבְּי֣וֹםbe.YomH3117of my distressצָֽרָתִ֔יtza.ra.TiH6869andhas beenוַיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961with mewhereverבַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥רba.De.rekh 'a.SherH1870 H834I have goneהָלָֽכְתִּי׃ha.La.khe.tiH1980.”

4So they gaveוַיִּתְּנ֣וּvai.yi.te.NuH5414Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290allכָּל־kol-H3605the foreignהַנֵּכָר֙ha.ne.KharH5236godsאֱלֹהֵ֤י'e.lo.HeiH430whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they hadבְּיָדָ֔םbe.ya.DamH3027and the ringsהַנְּזָמִ֖יםha.ne.za.MimH5141whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were in their earsבְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑םbe.'a.ze.nei.HemH241,and Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290hidוַיִּטְמֹ֤ןvai.yit.MonH2934them underתַּ֥חַתTa.chatH8478theoakהָאֵלָ֖הha.'e.LahH424whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834was nearעִם־'im-H5973Shechemשְׁכֶֽם׃she.KhemH7927.

5As they journeyedוַיִּסָּ֑עוּvai.yi.Sa.'uH5265, there wasa greatאֱלֹהִ֗ים'E.lo.HimH430terrorחִתַּ֣תchi.TatH2847upon the citiesהֶֽעָרִים֙he.'a.RimH5892whichאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834were aroundסְבִיבֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔םse.vi.Vo.tei.HemH5439them, and they did not pursueרָֽדְפ֔וּra.de.FuH7291the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290.

6So Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290cameוַיָּבֹ֨אvai.ya.Vo'H935toLuzל֗וּזָהLu.zahH3870(that is, BethelH1008),whichאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834is in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667,he and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were with him.

7Thenhe builtוַיִּ֤בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֔חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁם֙shamH8033,and calledוַיִּקְרָא֙vai.yik.Ra'H7121the placeלַמָּק֔וֹםla.ma.KomH4725El-bethelH416,becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588thereשָׁ֗םShamH8033Godהָֽאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430had revealedנִגְל֤וּnig.LuH1540Himself to him when he fledבְּבָרְח֖וֹbe.va.re.ChoH1272from his brotherאָחִֽיו׃'a.ChivH251.

8NowDeborahדְּבֹרָה֙de.vo.RahH1683,Rebekah’sרִבְקָ֔הriv.KahH7259nurseמֵינֶ֣קֶתmei.Ne.ketH3243,diedוַתָּ֤מָתva.Ta.motH4191,and she was buriedוַתִּקָּבֵ֛רva.ti.ka.VerH6912belowמִתַּ֥חַתmi.Ta.chatH4480 H8478BethelH1008underתַּ֣חַתTa.chatH8478the oakהָֽאַלּ֑וֹןha.'a.LonH437;and it was namedוַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹvai.yik.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034Allon-bacuthH439.

9Then Godאֱלֹהִ֤ים'E.lo.HimH430appearedוַיֵּרָ֨אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290againע֔וֹדodH5750when he cameבְּבֹא֖וֹbe.vo.'OH935from Paddan-aramמִפַּדַּ֣ןmi.pa.DanH6307, and Heblessedוַיְבָ֖רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288him.

10Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּֽאמֶר־vai.yo.mer-H559to him, “Your nameH8034is Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290;You shall noלֹֽא־lo'-H3808longerע֜וֹדodH5750be calledיִקָּרֵא֩yi.ka.Re'H7121Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290,But Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478shall be your nameH8034.”So He calledוַיִּקְרָ֥אvai.yik.Ra'H7121him Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

11Godאֱלֹהִ֜ים'E.lo.HimH430also saidוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559to him, “I amGodאֵ֤ל'elH410Almightyשַׁדַּי֙sha.DaiH7706;BeH6509fruitfulפְּרֵ֣הpe.RehH6509and multiplyוּרְבֵ֔הu.re.VehH7235;A nationגּ֛וֹיGoyH1471and amultitudeוּקְהַ֥לu.ke.HalH6951of nationsגּוֹיִ֖םgo.YimH1471shallcomeיִהְיֶ֣הyih.YehH1961from you, Andkingsוּמְלָכִ֖יםu.me.la.KhimH4428shallcomeיֵצֵֽאוּ׃ye.Tze.'uH3318from you.

12Andthe landהָאָ֗רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I gaveנָתַ֛תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414to Abrahamלְאַבְרָהָ֥םle.'av.ra.HamH85and Isaacוּלְיִצְחָ֖קu.le.yitz.ChakH3327,I will giveאֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה'et.te.Ne.nahH5414to you,And I will giveאֶתֵּ֥ן'e.TenH5414the landהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776to yourdescendantsוּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֥u.le.zar.'a.KhaH2233after you.”

13ThenGodאֱלֹהִ֑ים'E.lo.HimH430wentH5927upH5927from him at the placeבַּמָּק֖וֹםba.ma.KomH4725whereאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834He had spokenדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696with him.

14So Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290setוַיַּצֵּ֨בvai.ya.TzevH5324upH5324a memorialH4676stoneH4676in the placeבַּמָּק֛וֹםba.ma.KomH4725whereאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834He had spokenדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696with him, a memorialH4676of stoneאָ֑בֶן'A.venH68,and he pouredוַיַּסֵּ֤ךְvai.ya.SekhH5258outH5258a drinkנֶ֔סֶךְNe.sekhH5262offeringH5262on it; he also pouredוַיִּצֹ֥קvai.yi.TzokH3332oilשָֽׁמֶן׃Sha.menH8081on it.

15And Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290namedוַיִּקְרָ֨א שֵׁ֣םvai.yik.Ra' shemH7121 H8034the placeהַמָּק֗וֹםha.ma.KomH4725whereאֲשֶׁר֩ שָׁ֛ם'a.Sher shamH834 H8033Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430had spokenדִּבֶּ֨רdi.BerH1696with him,BethelH1008.

16Then they journeyedH5265onH5265from BethelH1008;but when there was stillע֥וֹדodH5750someH3530distanceכִּבְרַת־ הָאָ֖רֶץkiv.rat- ha.'A.retzH3530 H776to goלָב֣וֹאla.Vo'H935toEphrathאֶפְרָ֑תָה'ef.Ra.tahH672,Rachelרָחֵ֖לra.ChelH7354began to giveH3205birthH3205and she sufferedH7185severeH7185difficultiesוַתְּקַ֥שׁva.te.KashH7185in her laborH3205.

17And when she was sufferingH7185severeH7185difficultiesבְהַקְשֹׁתָ֖הּve.hak.sho.TahH7185in her laborבְּלִדְתָּ֑הּbe.lid.TahH3205,the midwifeהַמְיַלֶּ֙דֶת֙ham.ya.Le.detH3205saidוַתֹּ֨אמֶרva.To.merH559to her, “Do not fearתִּ֣ירְאִ֔יtir.'IH3372, foryou have anotherגַם־gam-H1571sonבֵּֽן׃BenH1121!”

18And it cameH1961aboutH1961,as her soulנַפְשָׁהּ֙naf.ShahH5315was departingבְּצֵ֤אתbe.TzetH3318(for she diedמֵ֔תָהMe.tahH4191),that she namedוַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹva.tik.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034himBen-oniH1126;but his fatherוְאָבִ֖יוve.'a.VivH1calledקָֽרָא־ka.ra'-H7121himBenjaminבִנְיָמִֽין׃vin.ya.MinH1144.

19SoRachelרָחֵ֑לra.ChelH7354diedוַתָּ֖מָתva.Ta.motH4191and was buriedוַתִּקָּבֵר֙va.ti.ka.VerH6912on the wayבְּדֶ֣רֶךְbe.De.rekhH1870toEphrathאֶפְרָ֔תָה'ef.Ra.tahH672(that is, BethlehemH1035).

20And Jacobיַעֲקֹ֛בya.'a.KoH3290setוַיַּצֵּ֧בvai.ya.TzevH5324upH5324a memorialH4676stoneH4676overעַל־'al-H5921her graveקְבֻרָתָ֑הּke.vu.ra.TahH6900; that is thememorialH4676stoneH4676of Rachel’sרָחֵ֖לra.ChelH7354graveקְבֻֽרַת־ke.vu.rat-H6900to this dayהַיּֽוֹם׃hai.YomH3117.

21Then Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478journeyedH5265onH5265and pitchedוַיֵּ֣טvai.YetH5186his tentאָֽהֳל֔וֹ'o.ho.LoH168beyondמֵהָ֖לְאָהme.Hal.'ahH4480 H1973thetowerH4029ofH4029EderH4029.

24the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Rachelרָחֵ֔לra.ChelH7354wereJosephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130and Benjaminוּבִנְיָמִֽן׃u.vin.ya.MinH1144;

25andthe sonsוּבְנֵ֤יu.ve.NeiH1121of Bilhahבִלְהָה֙vil.HahH1090,Rachel’sרָחֵ֔לra.ChelH7354femaleH8198slaveH8198, wereDanדָּ֖ןdanH1835and Naphtaliוְנַפְתָּלִֽי׃ve.naf.ta.LiH5321;

28Now the daysיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117of Isaacיִצְחָ֑קyitz.ChakH3327were180מְאַ֥ת וּשְׁמֹנִ֥יםme.'At u.she.mo.NimH3967 H8084yearsH8141.
