Jacob Is Buried

1Then Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130fellוַיִּפֹּ֥לvai.yi.PolH5307on his father’sאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1faceפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440,and weptוַיֵּ֥בְךְּvai.Ye.vekH1058overH5921him and kissedוַיִּשַּׁק־vai.yi.shak-H5401him.

2Josephיוֹסֵ֤ףyo.SefH3130commandedוַיְצַ֨וvay.TzavH6680his servantsעֲבָדָיו֙'a.va.DavH5650the physiciansהָרֹ֣פְאִ֔יםha.Ro.fe.'ImH7495to embalmלַחֲנֹ֖טla.cha.NotH2590his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1.So the physiciansהָרֹפְאִ֖יםha.ro.fe.'ImH7495embalmedוַיַּחַנְט֥וּvai.ya.chan.TuH2590Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

3Now fortyאַרְבָּעִ֣ים'ar.ba.'ImH705daysי֔וֹםYomH3117wererequiredוַיִּמְלְאוּ־vai.yim.le.'u-H4390for it, forsuchכֵּ֥ןkenH3651is the periodיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117requiredיִמְלְא֖וּyim.le.'UH4390for embalmingH2591.And the EgyptiansH4714weptוַיִּבְכּ֥וּvai.yiv.KuH1058for him seventyשִׁבְעִ֥יםshiv.'ImH7657daysיֽוֹם׃YomH3117.

4When the daysיְמֵ֣יye.MeiH3117ofmourningבְכִית֔וֹve.khi.ToH1068for him wereH5674pastH5674,Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֣רvay.da.BerH1696to the householdבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֖הpar.'OhH6547,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Ifאִם־'im-H518nowנָ֨אna'H4994I have foundמָצָ֤אתִיma.Tza.tiH4672favorחֵן֙chenH2580in your sightבְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔םbe.'Ei.nei.KhemH5869,pleaseנָ֕אna'H4994speakדַּבְּרוּ־da.be.ru-H1696to Pharaohפַרְעֹ֖הfar.'OhH6547,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

5‘My fatherאָבִ֞י'a.ViH1made me swearהִשְׁבִּיעַ֣נִיhish.bi.'A.niH7650,sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, “Beholdהִנֵּ֣הhi.NehH2009,I am about to dieמֵת֒metH4191;in my graveבְּקִבְרִ֗יbe.kiv.RiH6913whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834I dugכָּרִ֤יתִיka.Ri.tiH3738for myself in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667,thereשָׁ֖מָּהSha.mahH8033you shall buryתִּקְבְּרֵ֑נִיtik.be.Re.niH6912me.” Nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258then, pleaseנָּ֛אna'H4994let me goאֶֽעֱלֶה־'e.'e.leh-H5927upH5927and buryוְאֶקְבְּרָ֥הve.'ek.be.RahH6912my fatherאָבִ֖י'a.ViH1;then I will returnוְאָשֽׁוּבָה׃ve.'a.Shu.vahH7725.’”

6Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֑הpar.'OhH6547saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goעֲלֵ֛ה'a.LehH5927upH5927and buryוּקְבֹ֥רu.ke.VorH6912your fatherאָבִ֖יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1,as he made you swearהִשְׁבִּיעֶֽךָ׃hish.bi.'E.khaH7650.”

7So Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130wentH5927upH5927to buryלִקְבֹּ֣רlik.BorH6912his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1,and with him wentH5927upH5927allכָּל־kol-H3605the servantsעַבְדֵ֤י'av.DeiH5650of Pharaohפַרְעֹה֙far.'OhH6547,the eldersזִקְנֵ֣יzik.NeiH2205of his householdבֵית֔וֹvei.ToH1004and allוְכֹ֖לve.KholH3605the eldersזִקְנֵ֥יzik.NeiH2205of the landאֶֽרֶץ־'e.retz-H776of Egyptמִצְרָֽיִם׃mitz.Ra.yimH4714,

8and allוְכֹל֙ve.KholH3605the householdבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130and his brothersוְאֶחָ֖יוve.'e.ChavH251and his father’sאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1householdוּבֵ֣יתu.VeitH1004;they leftעָזְב֖וּ'a.ze.VuH5800onlyH7534their littleטַפָּם֙ta.PamH2945onesH2945and their flocksוְצֹאנָ֣םve.tzo.NamH6629and their herdsוּבְקָרָ֔םu.ve.ka.RamH1241in the landבְּאֶ֥רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Goshenגֹּֽשֶׁן׃Go.shenH1657.

9Chariotsרֶ֖כֶבRe.khevH7393with teamsH6571ofH6571horsesH6571also wentH5927upH5927with him; and it was a veryמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966greatכָּבֵ֥דka.VedH3515companyהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖הha.ma.cha.NehH4264.

10When they cameוַיָּבֹ֜אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to thethreshingH1637floorגֹּ֣רֶןGo.renH1637of Atadהָאָטָ֗דha.'a.TadH329,whichאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834is beyondבְּעֵ֣בֶרbe.'E.verH5676the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֔ןhai.yar.DenH3383, theymournedוַיִּ֨סְפְּדוּ־vai.Yis.pe.du-H5594thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033with a veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966greatגָּד֥וֹלga.DolH1419andsorrowfulוְכָבֵ֖דve.kha.VedH3515lamentationמִסְפֵּ֛דmis.PedH4553; and heobservedוַיַּ֧עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213sevenשִׁבְעַ֥תshiv.'AtH7651daysיָמִֽים׃ya.MimH3117of mourningאֵ֖בֶל'E.velH60for his fatherלְאָבִ֛יוle.'a.VivH1.

11Now when the inhabitantsיוֹשֵׁב֩yo.ShevH3427of the landהָאָ֨רֶץha.'A.retzH776,the Canaanitesהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669,sawוַיַּ֡רְאvai.Yar'H7200the mourningהָאֵ֗בֶלha.'E.velH60atthe threshingבְּגֹ֙רֶן֙be.Go.renH1637floorH1637of Atadהָֽאָטָ֔דha.'a.TadH329,they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Thisזֶ֖הzehH2088is agrievousכָּבֵ֥דka.VedH3515mourningאֵֽבֶל־'e.vel-H60for the Egyptiansלְמִצְרָ֑יִםle.mitz.Ra.yimH4714.”Thereforeעַל־ כֵּ֞ן'al- kenH5921 H3651it was namedקָרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ka.Ra' she.MahH7121 H8034Abel-mizraimH67,whichאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834is beyondבְּעֵ֥בֶרbe.'E.verH5676the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃hai.yar.DenH3383.

13for his sonsבָנָיו֙va.NavH1121carriedוַיִּשְׂא֨וּvai.yis.'UH5375him to the landאַ֣רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667and buriedוַיִּקְבְּר֣וּvai.yik.be.RuH6912him inthe caveבִּמְעָרַ֖תbim.'a.RatH4631of the fieldשְׂדֵ֣הse.DehH7704of Machpelahהַמַּכְפֵּלָ֑הha.makh.pe.LahH4375oppositeעַל־ פְּנֵ֥י'al- pe.NeiH5921 H6440Mamreמַמְרֵֽא׃mam.Re'H4471,whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֨ם'av.ra.HamH85had boughtקָנָה֩ka.NahH7069along with the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֜הha.sa.DehH7704as aburialקֶ֗בֶרKe.verH6913siteלַאֲחֻזַּת־la.'a.chu.zat-H272from Ephronעֶפְרֹ֥ן'ef.RonH6085the Hittiteהַחִתִּ֖יha.chi.TiH2850.

14And afterאַחֲרֵ֖י'a.cha.ReiH310he had buriedלִקְבֹּ֣רlik.BorH6912his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1,Josephיוֹסֵ֤ףyo.SefH3130returnedוַיָּ֨שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725to Egyptמִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙mitz.Ray.mahH4714,he and his brothersוְאֶחָ֔יוve.'e.ChavH251,and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605who had goneH5927upH5927with him to buryקָבְר֥וֹka.ve.RoH6912his fatherאָבִֽיו׃'a.VivH1.

15When Joseph’sיוֹסֵף֙yo.SefH3130brothersאֲחֵֽי־'a.chei-H251had seenוַיִּרְא֤וּvai.yir.'UH7200that their fatherאֲבִיהֶ֔ם'a.vi.HemH1was deadמֵ֣תmetH4191,they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “What if Josephיוֹסֵ֑ףyo.SefH3130holdsH7852aH7852grudgeיִשְׂטְמֵ֖נוּyis.te.Me.nuH7852againstH7852us and paysH7725us backH7725inH7725fullH7725for allכָּל־kol-H3605the wrongH7463whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834we didגָּמַ֖לְנוּga.Mal.nuH1580to him!”

16So they sentH6680instructionsH6680to Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Your fatherאָבִ֣יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1commandedH6680usbeforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440he diedמוֹת֖וֹmo.ToH4194,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

17‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541you shall sayתֹאמְר֣וּto.me.RuH559to Josephלְיוֹסֵ֗ףle.yo.SefH3130: “Pleaseנָ֠אna'H4994forgiveשָׂ֣אsa'H5375,I begאָ֣נָּ֡א'a.Na'H577you, the offenseפֶּ֣שַׁעPe.sha'H6588of your brothersאַחֶ֤יךָ'a.Chei.khaH251and their sinוְחַטָּאתָם֙ve.cha.ta.TamH2403,for they didגְמָל֔וּךָge.ma.Lu.khaH1580you wrongH7463.”’And nowוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258,pleaseנָ֔אNa'H4994forgiveשָׂ֣אsa'H5375the offenseלְפֶ֥שַׁעle.Fe.sha'H6588of the servantsעַבְדֵ֖י'av.DeiH5650of the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of your fatherאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1.”And Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130weptוַיֵּ֥בְךְּvai.Ye.vekH1058when they spokeבְּדַבְּרָ֥םbe.da.be.RamH1696to him.

18Then his brothersאֶחָ֔יו'e.ChavH251alsoגַּם־gam-H1571cameוַיֵּלְכוּ֙vai.ye.le.KhuH1980andfellH5307downH5307beforeלְפָנָ֑יוle.fa.NavH6440him and saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Beholdהִנֶּ֥נּֽוּhi.Ne.nuH2009,we are your servantsלַעֲבָדִֽים׃la.'a.va.DimH5650.”

19But Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Do not beH3372afraidH3372,for am I inH8478God’sאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430placeהֲתַ֥חַתha.Ta.chatH8478?

20As for you,you meantחֲשַׁבְתֶּ֥םcha.shav.TemH2803evilH7463againstעָלַ֖י'a.LaiH5921me, butGodאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430meantחֲשָׁבָ֣הּcha.sha.VahH2803it for goodH2899inH4616orderH4616toH4616bringH6213aboutH6213thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088presentכַּיּ֥וֹםkai.YomH3117result, to keepH2421manyרָֽב׃RavH7227peopleעַם־'am-H5971aliveלְהַחֲיֹ֥תle.ha.cha.YotH2421.

21Soוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258therefore, do not beH3372afraidH3372;I will provideאֲכַלְכֵּ֥ל'a.khal.KelH3557for you and your littleטַפְּכֶ֑םta.pe.KhemH2945onesH2945.”So he comfortedוַיְנַחֵ֣םvay.na.ChemH5162them and spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֖רvay.da.BerH1696kindlyלִבָּֽם׃li.BamH3820to them.

24Josephיוֹסֵף֙yo.SefH3130saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his brothersאֶחָ֔יו'e.ChavH251, “I am about to dieמֵ֑תMetH4191,but Godוֵֽאלֹהִ֞יםve.lo.HimH430will assuredlyH6485takeH6485careH6485ofH6485you and bringוְהֶעֱלָ֤הve.he.'e.LahH5927you upH5927from thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776to the landהָאָ֕רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834HepromisedH7650onH7650oathH7650toAbrahamלְאַבְרָהָ֥םle.'av.ra.HamH85, toIsaacלְיִצְחָ֖קle.yitz.ChakH3327, and toJacobוּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃u.le.ya.'a.koH3290.”

25Then Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130made the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478swearוַיַּשְׁבַּ֣עvai.yash.Ba'H7650,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430will assuredlyH6485takeH6485careH6485ofH6485you, andyou shall carryH5927my bonesעַצְמֹתַ֖י'atz.mo.TaiH6106upH5927from hereמִזֶּֽה׃mi.ZehH2088.”

26So Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130diedוַיָּ֣מָתvai.Ya.motH4191at the ageבֶּן־ben-H1121of 110מֵאָ֥ה וָעֶ֖שֶׂרme.'Ah va.'E.serH3967 H6235yearsשָׁנִ֑יםsha.NimH8141; and theyembalmedוַיַּחַנְט֣וּvai.ya.chan.TuH2590him and placedH7760him in a coffinבָּאָר֖וֹןba.'a.RonH727in Egyptבְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃be.mitz.Ra.yimH4714.
