Jacob Leaves Secretly for Canaan

1NowJacob heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֗עvai.yish.Ma'H8085the wordsדִּבְרֵ֤יdiv.ReiH1697of Laban’sלָבָן֙la.VanH3837sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290has takenלָקַ֣חla.KachH3947away allכָּל־kol-H3605that was our father’sלְאָבִ֑ינוּle.'a.Vi.nuH1,and from whatH834belonged to our fatherלְאָבִ֔ינוּle.'a.Vi.nuH1he has madeעָשָׂ֕ה'a.SahH6213allכָּל־kol-H3605thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088wealthהַכָּבֹ֖דha.ka.VodH3519.”

2And Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290sawוַיַּ֥רְאvai.Yar'H7200theattitudeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440of Labanלָבָ֑ןla.VanH3837,and beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009, it was not friendlytowardעִמּ֖וֹi.MoH5973him as it had beenbeforeכִּתְמ֥וֹלkit.MolH8543.

3Then the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290, “Returnשׁ֛וּבshuvH7725to the landאֶ֥רֶץ'E.retzH776of your fathersאֲבוֹתֶ֖יךָ'a.vo.Tei.khaH1and to your relativesוּלְמוֹלַדְתֶּ֑ךָu.le.mo.lad.Te.khaH4138, and I will be with you.”

4So Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971wordand calledוַיִּקְרָ֖אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Rachelלְרָחֵ֣לle.ra.ChelH7354and Leahוּלְלֵאָ֑הu.le.le.'AhH3812to his flockצֹאנֽוֹ׃tzo.NoH6629in the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֖הha.sa.DehH7704,

5and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “I seeרֹאֶ֤הro.'EhH7200your father’sאֲבִיכֶ֔ן'a.vi.KhenH1attitudeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440, that it is not friendlytowardאֵלַ֖י'e.LaiH413me as it wasbeforeכִּתְמֹ֣לkit.MolH8543, butthe Godוֵֽאלֹהֵ֣יve.lo.HeiH430of my fatherאָבִ֔י'a.ViH1has beenהָיָ֖הha.YahH1961with me.

6You knowיְדַעְתֶּ֑ןye.da'.TenH3045that I have servedעָבַ֖דְתִּי'a.Vad.tiH5647your fatherאֲבִיכֶֽן׃'a.vi.KhenH1with allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605my strengthכֹּחִ֔יko.ChiH3581.

7Yet your fatherוַאֲבִיכֶן֙va.'a.vi.KhenH1hascheatedH8524me andchangedוְהֶחֱלִ֥ףve.he.che.LifH2498my wagesמַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖יmas.kur.TiH4909tenעֲשֶׂ֣רֶת'a.Se.retH6235timesמֹנִ֑יםmo.NimH4489; however,Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430did not allowנְתָנ֣וֹne.ta.NoH5414him to doH7489me harmלְהָרַ֖עle.ha.Ra'H7489.

8Ifאִם־'im-H518he saidיֹאמַ֗רyo.MarH559thisכֹּ֣הkohH3541: ‘The speckledנְקֻדִּים֙ne.ku.DimH5348shall be your wagesשְׂכָרֶ֔ךָse.kha.Re.khaH7939,’then allכָל־khol-H3605the flockהַצֹּ֖אןha.TzonH6629deliveredוְיָלְד֥וּve.yal.DuH3205speckledנְקֻדִּ֑יםne.ku.DimH5348;and ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518he saidיֹאמַ֗רyo.MarH559thisכֹּ֣הkohH3541: ‘The stripedעֲקֻדִּים֙'a.ku.DimH6124shall be your wagesשְׂכָרֶ֔ךָse.kha.Re.khaH7939,’then allכָל־khol-H3605the flockהַצֹּ֖אןha.TzonH6629deliveredוְיָלְד֥וּve.yal.DuH3205stripedעֲקֻדִּֽים׃'a.ku.DimH6124.

9So Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430hastakenH5337awayוַיַּצֵּ֧לvai.ya.TzelH5337your father’sאֲבִיכֶ֖ם'a.vi.KhemH1livestockמִקְנֵ֥הmik.NehH4735and givenוַיִּתֶּן־vai.yi.ten-H5414them to me.

10And it cameH1961aboutH1961at the timeבְּעֵת֙be.'EtH6256when the flockH6629was breedingיַחֵ֣םya.ChemH3179that I raisedוָאֶשָּׂ֥אva.'e.Sa'H5375my eyesעֵינַ֛י'ei.NaiH5869and sawוָאֵ֖רֶאva.'E.re'H7200in a dreamבַּחֲל֑וֹםba.cha.LomH2472--and beholdוְהִנֵּ֤הve.hi.NehH2009--the maleהָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ha.'a.tu.DimH6260goatsH6260that werematingהָעֹלִ֣יםha.'o.LimH5927werestripedעֲקֻדִּ֥ים'a.ku.DimH6124,speckledנְקֻדִּ֖יםne.ku.DimH5348,or mottledוּבְרֻדִּֽים׃u.ve.ru.DimH1261.

11Thenthe angelמַלְאַ֧ךְmal.'AkhH4397of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֛יםha.'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to me in the dreamבַּחֲל֖וֹםba.cha.LomH2472, ‘Jacobיַֽעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290’;and I saidוָאֹמַ֖רva.'o.MarH559, ‘Hereהִנֵּֽנִי׃hi.Ne.niH2009I am.’

12He saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, ‘Nowנָ֨אna'H4994raiseשָׂא־sa'-H5375your eyesעֵינֶ֤יךָ'ei.Nei.khaH5869and seeוּרְאֵה֙u.re.'EhH7200thatallכָּל־kol-H3605the maleהָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ha.'a.tu.DimH6260goatsH6260that arematingהָעֹלִ֣יםha.'o.LimH5927are stripedעֲקֻדִּ֥ים'a.ku.DimH6124,speckledנְקֻדִּ֖יםne.ku.DimH5348,or mottledוּבְרֻדִּ֑יםu.ve.ru.DimH1261; forI have seenרָאִ֔יתִיra.'I.tiH7200everythingכָּל־kol-H3605that Labanלָבָ֖ןla.VanH3837has been doingעֹ֥שֶׂה'O.sehH6213to you.

13I amthe Godהָאֵל֙ha.'ElH410ofBethelH1008,whereאֲשֶׁ֨ר שָּׁם֙'a.Sher shamH834 H8033youanointedמָשַׁ֤חְתָּma.Shach.taH4886a memorialH4676stoneH4676,whereאֲשֶׁ֨ר שָׁ֖ם'a.Sher shamH834 H8033you madeנָדַ֥רְתָּna.Dar.taH5087a vowנֶ֑דֶרNe.derH5088to Me; nowעַתָּ֗ה'a.TahH6258ariseק֥וּםkumH6965,leaveצֵא֙ מִן־tze' min-H3318 H4480thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776, andreturnוְשׁ֖וּבve.ShuvH7725to the landאֶ֥רֶץ'E.retzH776of your birthמוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃mo.lad.Te.khaH4138.’”

14Rachelרָחֵל֙ra.ChelH7354and Leahוְלֵאָ֔הve.le.'AhH3812saidוַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָהva.to.Mar.nahH559to him, “Do we stillהַע֥וֹדha.'odH5750have any shareחֵ֥לֶקChe.lekH2506or inheritanceוְנַחֲלָ֖הve.na.cha.LahH5159in our father’sאָבִֽינוּ׃'a.Vi.nuH1houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004?

15Are we not regardedנֶחְשַׁ֥בְנוּnech.Shav.nuH2803by him as foreignersנָכְרִיּ֛וֹתna.khe.ri.YotH5237? Forhe has soldמְכָרָ֑נוּme.kha.Ra.nuH4376us, and has alsoגַּם־gam-H1571entirelyוַיֹּ֥אכַלvai.Yo.khalH398consumedאָכ֖וֹל'a.KholH398ourpurchaseH3701priceH3701.

16Surelyכִּ֣יkiH3588allכָל־khol-H3605the wealthהָעֹ֗שֶׁרha.'O.sherH6239whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430has takenH5337awayהִצִּ֤ילhi.TzilH5337from our fatherמֵֽאָבִ֔ינוּme.'a.Vi.nuH1belongs to us and our childrenוּלְבָנֵ֑ינוּu.le.va.Nei.nuH1121;nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258then, doעֲשֵֽׂה׃'a.SehH6213whateverכֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨רkol 'a.SherH3605 H834Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430has toldאָמַ֧ר'a.MarH559you.”

17Then Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290stoodH6965upH6965and putוַיִּשָּׂ֛אvai.yi.Sa'H5375his childrenבָּנָ֥יוba.NavH1121and his wivesנָשָׁ֖יוna.ShavH802on camelsהַגְּמַלִּֽים׃ha.ge.ma.LimH1581;

18and he droveH5090awayH5090allכָּל־kol-H3605his livestockמִקְנֵ֗הוּmik.Ne.huH4735and allכָּל־kol-H3605his propertyרְכֻשׁוֹ֙re.khu.ShoH7399whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had acquiredרָכָ֔שׁra.KhashH7408,the livestockמִקְנֵה֙mik.NehH4735he possessedקִנְיָנ֔וֹkin.ya.NoH7075whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834he had acquiredרָכַ֖שׁra.KhashH7408in Paddan-aramבְּפַדַּ֣ןbe.fa.DanH6307,to goלָב֛וֹאla.Vo'H935to the landאַ֥רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Canaanכְּנָֽעַן׃ke.Na.'anH3667to his fatherאָבִ֖יו'a.VivH1Isaacיִצְחָ֥קyitz.ChakH3327.

19Labanוְלָבָ֣ןve.la.VanH3837had goneהָלַ֔ךְha.LakhH1980to shearלִגְזֹ֖זlig.ZozH1494his flockצֹאנ֑וֹtzo.NoH6629,and Rachelרָחֵ֔לra.ChelH7354stoleוַתִּגְנֹ֣בva.tig.NoH1589thehouseholdH8655idolsH8655that were her father’sלְאָבִֽיהָ׃le.'a.Vi.haH1.

20And Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290deceivedוַיִּגְנֹ֣בvai.yig.NoH1589Labanלָבָ֖ןla.VanH3837the Arameanהָאֲרַמִּ֑יha.'a.ra.MiH761by not tellingהִגִּ֣ידhi.GidH5046him that he was fleeingבֹרֵ֖חַvo.Re.achH1272.

21So he fledוַיִּבְרַ֥חvai.yiv.RachH1272with allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605that he had; and he gotH6965upH6965and crossedוַיַּעֲבֹ֣רvai.ya.'a.VorH5674the EuphratesRiverהַנָּהָ֑רha.na.HarH5104,and setוַיָּ֥שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760out for the hillהַ֥רharH2022countryH2022ofGileadהַגִּלְעָֽד׃ha.gil.'AdH1568.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22When Labanלְלָבָ֖ןle.la.VanH3837was informedוַיֻּגַּ֥דvai.yu.GadH5046on the thirdהַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑יha.she.li.ShiH7992dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117that Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290had fledבָרַ֖חva.RachH1272,

23he tookוַיִּקַּ֤חvai.yi.KachH3947his kinsmenאֶחָיו֙'e.ChavH251with him and pursuedוַיִּרְדֹּ֣ףvai.yir.DofH7291him a distance ofsevenשִׁבְעַ֣תshiv.'AtH7651days’יָמִ֑יםya.MimH3117journeyדֶּ֖רֶךְDe.rekhH1870,and he overtookוַיַּדְבֵּ֥קvai.yad.BekH1692him in the hillבְּהַ֥רbe.HarH2022countryH2022of Gileadהַגִּלְעָֽד׃ha.gil.'AdH1568.

24However,Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430cameוַיָּבֹ֧אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Labanלָבָ֥ןla.VanH3837the Arameanהָאֲרַמִּ֖יha.'a.ra.MiH761in adreamבַּחֲלֹ֣םba.cha.LomH2472of the nightהַלָּ֑יְלָהha.La.ye.lahH3915and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “BeH8104carefulH8104that you do not speakתְּדַבֵּ֥רte.da.BerH1696to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290eitherH4480goodמִטּ֥וֹבmi.TovH2896orעַד־'ad-H5704badרָֽע׃Ra'H7451.”

25And Labanלָבָ֖ןla.VanH3837caughtH5381upH5381with Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290.Now Jacobוְיַעֲקֹ֗בve.ya.'a.KoH3290had pitchedתָּקַ֤עta.Ka'H8628his tentאָהֳלוֹ֙'o.ho.LoH168in the hillבָּהָ֔רba.HarH2022countryבְּהַ֥רbe.HarH2022,and Labanוְלָבָ֛ןve.la.VanH3837with his kinsmenאֶחָ֖יו'e.ChavH251campedתָּקַ֥עta.Ka'H8628in the hillH2022countryH2022of Gileadהַגִּלְעָֽד׃ha.gil.'AdH1568.

26Then Labanלָבָן֙la.VanH3837saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֔בle.ya.'a.KoH3290, “Whatמֶ֣הmehH4100have you doneעָשִׂ֔יתָ'a.Si.taH6213by deceivingוַתִּגְנֹ֖בva.tig.NoH1589me and carryingH5090awayוַתְּנַהֵג֙va.te.na.HegH5090my daughtersבְּנֹתַ֔יbe.no.TaiH1323like captivesכִּשְׁבֻי֖וֹתkish.vu.YotH7617of the swordחָֽרֶב׃Cha.revH2719?

27Whyלָ֤מָּהLa.mahH4100did you fleeלִבְרֹ֔חַliv.Ro.achH1272secretlyנַחְבֵּ֙אתָ֙nach.Be.taH2244anddeceiveוַתִּגְנֹ֖בva.tig.NoH1589me, and did not tellהִגַּ֣דְתָּhi.Gad.taH5046me, so that I might have sentH7971you awayוָֽאֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ֛va.'a.sha.le.cha.KhaH7971with joyבְּשִׂמְחָ֥הbe.sim.ChahH8057and with songsוּבְשִׁרִ֖יםu.ve.shi.RimH7892, withtambourineבְּתֹ֥ףbe.TofH8596and withlyreוּבְכִנּֽוֹר׃u.ve.khi.NorH3658;

28and did not allowנְטַשְׁתַּ֔נִיne.tash.Ta.niH5203meto kissלְנַשֵּׁ֥קle.na.ShekH5401mygrandchildrenלְבָנַ֖יle.va.NaiH1121and my daughtersוְלִבְנֹתָ֑יve.liv.no.TaiH1323?Nowעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258you have doneעֲשֽׂוֹ׃a.SoH5528 H6213foolishlyהִסְכַּ֥לְתָּֽhis.Kal.taH5528.

29It is inmy powerיָדִ֔יya.DiH3027to doלַעֲשׂ֥וֹתla.'a.SotH6213you harmרָ֑עRa'H7451, butthe Godוֵֽאלֹהֵ֨יve.lo.HeiH430of your fatherאֲבִיכֶ֜ם'a.vi.KhemH1spokeאָמַ֧ר'a.MarH559to me lastאֶ֣מֶשׁ׀'E.meshH570nightH570,sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, ‘BeH8104carefulH8104not to speakמִדַּבֵּ֥רmi.da.BerH1696eitherH4480goodמִטּ֥וֹבmi.TovH2896orעַד־'ad-H5704badרָֽע׃Ra'H7451to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290.’

30Nowוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258you have indeedהָלֹ֣ךְha.LokhH1980goneהָלַ֔כְתָּha.Lakh.taH1980away becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588you longedנִכְסֹ֥ףnikh.SofH3700greatlyנִכְסַ֖פְתָּהnikh.Saf.tahH3700for your father’sאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1houseלְבֵ֣יתle.VeitH1004; butwhyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100did you stealגָנַ֖בְתָּga.Nav.taH1589my godsאֱלֹהָֽי׃'e.lo.HaiH430?”

31Then Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290repliedוַיַּ֥עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030to Labanלְלָבָ֑ןle.la.VanH3837, “BecauseH3588I wasH3372afraidיָרֵ֔אתִיya.Re.tiH3372,for I thoughtH559that you would takeH1497your daughtersבְּנוֹתֶ֖יךָbe.no.Tei.khaH1323from me byH1497forceH1497.

32The one with whomאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834you findתִּמְצָ֣אtim.Tza'H4672your godsאֱלֹהֶיךָ֮'e.lo.hei.KhaH430shall not liveיִֽחְיֶה֒yich.YehH2421;in the presenceנֶ֣גֶדNe.gedH5048of our relativesאַחֵ֧ינוּ'a.Chei.nuH251pointH5234outH5234whatמָ֥הmahH4100is yoursamongH5973my belongingsH5973and takeוְקַֽח־ve.kach-H3947itfor yourself.” Now Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290did not knowיָדַ֣עya.Da'H3045that Rachelרָחֵ֖לra.ChelH7354had stolenגְּנָבָֽתַם׃ge.na.Va.tamH1589them.

33So Labanלָבָ֜ןla.VanH3837wentוַיָּבֹ֨אvai.ya.Vo'H935into Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֣ב׀ya.'a.KoH3290tentבְּאֹ֥הֶלbe.'O.helH168,and into Leah’sלֵאָ֗הle.'AhH3812tentוּבְאֹ֣הֶלu.ve.'O.helH168,and into the tentוּבְאֹ֛הֶלu.ve.'O.helH168of the twoשְׁתֵּ֥יshe.TeiH8147slaveH519womenH519,but he did not findמָצָ֑אma.Tza'H4672them.Then he wentH3318outH3318of Leah’sלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812tentמֵאֹ֣הֶלme.'O.helH168and enteredוַיָּבֹ֖אvai.ya.Vo'H935Rachel’sרָחֵֽל׃ra.ChelH7354tentבְּאֹ֥הֶלbe.'O.helH168.

34Now Rachelוְרָחֵ֞לve.ra.ChelH7354had takenלָקְחָ֣הla.ke.ChahH3947thehouseholdH8655idolsH8655and putוַתְּשִׂמֵ֛םva.te.si.MemH7760them in the camel’sהַגָּמָ֖לha.ga.MalH1581saddlebagבְּכַ֥רbe.KharH3733,and she satוַתֵּ֣שֶׁבva.Te.shevH3427on them. So Labanלָבָ֛ןla.VanH3837searchedוַיְמַשֵּׁ֥שׁvay.ma.SheshH4959throughH4959allכָּל־kol-H3605the tentהָאֹ֖הֶלha.'O.helH168,but did not findמָצָֽא׃ma.Tza'H4672them.

35And she saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559to her fatherאָבִ֗יהָ'a.Vi.haH1, “May my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113not beH2734angryH2734that I cannotאוּכַל֙'u.KhalH3201 H3808standלָק֣וּםla.KumH6965in your presenceמִפָּנֶ֔יךָmi.pa.Nei.khaH4480 H6440,becauseH3588thewayדֶ֥רֶךְDe.rekhH1870of womenנָשִׁ֖יםna.ShimH802is upon me.” So he searchedוַיְחַפֵּ֕שׂvay.cha.PesH2664but did not findמָצָ֖אma.Tza'H4672thehouseholdH8655idolsH8655.

36Then Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֖בle.ya.'a.KoH3290becameH2734angryH2734and arguedוַיָּ֣רֶבvai.Ya.revH7378with Labanבְּלָבָ֑ןbe.la.VanH3837;and Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Labanלְלָבָ֔ןle.la.VanH3837, “Whatמַה־mah-H4100is my offenseפִּשְׁעִי֙pish.'IH6588?Whatמַ֣הmahH4100is my sinחַטָּאתִ֔יcha.ta.TiH2403that you have hotlyH1814pursuedאַחֲרָֽי׃'a.cha.RaiH310 H1814me?

37Thoughכִּֽי־ki-H3588you have searchedמִשַּׁ֣שְׁתָּmi.Shash.taH4959throughH4959allכָּל־kol-H3605my propertyכֵּלַ֗יke.LaiH3627,whatמַה־mah-H4100have you foundמָּצָ֙אתָ֙ma.Tza.taH4672of allמִכֹּ֣לmi.KolH3605your householdבֵיתֶ֔ךָvei.Te.khaH1004propertyכְּלֵי־ke.lei-H3627?Setשִׂ֣יםsimH7760ithereכֹּ֔הKohH3541in frontנֶ֥גֶדNe.gedH5048of my relativesאַחַ֖י'a.ChaiH251and your relativesוְאַחֶ֑יךָve.'a.Chei.khaH251,so that they may decideוְיוֹכִ֖יחוּve.yo.Khi.chuH3198betweenבֵּ֥יןbeinH996the twoשְׁנֵֽינוּ׃she.Nei.nuH8147of us.
