Abram Promised a Son

1Afterאַחַ֣ר׀'a.CharH310theseהָאֵ֗לֶּהha.'E.lehH428thingsהַדְּבָרִ֣יםha.de.va.RimH1697the wordדְבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068cameהָיָ֤הha.YahH1961to Abramאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87in a visionבַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖הba.ma.cha.ZehH4236,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Do not fearתִּירָ֣אti.Ra'H3372,Abramאַבְרָ֗ם'av.RamH87, I ama shieldמָגֵ֣ןma.GenH4043to you; Yourrewardשְׂכָרְךָ֖se.kha.re.KhaH7939shall beH7235veryמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966greatהַרְבֵּ֥הhar.BehH7235.”

2But Abramאַבְרָ֗ם'av.RamH87saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Lordאֲדֹנָ֤י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068,whatמַה־mah-H4100will You giveתִּתֶּן־ti.ten-H5414me, since Iamהוֹלֵ֣ךְho.LekhH1980childlessעֲרִירִ֑י'a.ri.RiH6185, and theheirוּבֶן־ מֶ֣שֶׁקu.ven- Me.shekH1121 H4943of my houseבֵּיתִ֔יbei.TiH1004is Eliezerאֱלִיעֶֽזֶר׃'e.li.'E.zerH461of Damascusדַּמֶּ֥שֶׂקda.Me.sekH1834?”

3Abramאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87also saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Sinceהֵ֣ןhenH2005You have givenנָתַ֖תָּהna.Ta.tahH5414me noלֹ֥אlo'H3808sonזָ֑רַעZa.ra'H2233,oneH1121who has beenbornH1121in my houseבֵּיתִ֖יbei.TiH1004isH3423my heirH3423.”

4Then beholdוְהִנֵּ֨הve.hi.NehH2009,the wordדְבַר־de.var-H1697of the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068came to him, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Thisזֶ֑הZehH2088man will not beH3423your heirH3423;but one whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834will comeיֵצֵ֣אye.Tze'H3318fromH3318your ownbodyמִמֵּעֶ֔יךָmi.me.'Ei.khaH4578shall beH3423your heirH3423.”

5And He tookוַיּוֹצֵ֨אvai.yo.Tze'H3318him outsideהַח֗וּצָהha.Chu.tzahH2351and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “Nowנָ֣אna'H4994lookהַבֶּט־ha.bet-H5027toward the heavensהַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָהha.sha.May.mahH8064andcountוּסְפֹר֙u.se.ForH5608the starsהַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔יםha.Ko.kha.VimH3556,ifאִם־'im-H518you areH3201ableתּוּכַ֖לtu.KhalH3201to countלִסְפֹּ֣רlis.PorH5608them.” And He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Soכֹּ֥הkohH3541shall yourdescendantsזַרְעֶֽךָ׃zar.'E.khaH2233be.”

6Then he believedוְהֶאֱמִ֖ןve.he.'e.MinH539in the Lordבַּֽיהוָ֑הba.Yah.wehH3068; and Hecreditedוַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָvai.yach.she.Ve.haH2803it to him as righteousnessצְדָקָֽה׃tze.da.KahH6666.

7And He saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “I am the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068whoאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834broughtH3318you outH3318ofUrמֵא֣וּרme.'UrH218of the Chaldeansכַּשְׂדִּ֔יםkas.DimH3778, togiveלָ֧תֶתLa.tetH5414you thisH2088landהָאָ֥רֶץha.'A.retzH776topossessלְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃le.rish.TahH3423it.”

8But he saidוַיֹּאמַ֑רvai.yo.MarH559, “Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068,howבַּמָּ֥הba.MahH4100may I knowאֵדַ֖ע'e.Da'H3045that I willpossessאִֽירָשֶֽׁנָּה׃'I.ra.She.nahH3423it?”

9So He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Bringקְחָ֥הke.ChahH3947Me a three-year-oldמְשֻׁלֶּ֔שֶׁתme.shu.Le.shetH8027heiferעֶגְלָ֣ה'eg.LahH5697,a three-year-oldמְשֻׁלֶּ֖שֶׁתme.shu.Le.shetH8027femaleH5795goatוְעֵ֥זve.'EzH5795,a three-year-oldמְשֻׁלָּ֑שׁme.shu.LashH8027ramוְאַ֣יִלve.'A.yilH352,a turtledoveוְתֹ֖רve.TorH8449,and a youngוְגוֹזָֽל׃ve.go.ZalH1469pigeonH1469.”

10Then hebroughtוַיִּֽקַּֽח־vai.yi.kach-H3947allכָּל־kol-H3605theseאֵ֗לֶּה'E.lehH428to Him andcutוַיְבַתֵּ֤רvay.va.TerH1334themin twoבַּתָּ֔וֶךְba.Ta.vekhH8432,and laidוַיִּתֵּ֥ןvai.yi.TenH5414eachאִישׁ־'ish-H376halfבִּתְר֖וֹbit.RoH1335oppositeלִקְרַ֣אתlik.RatH7122the otherרֵעֵ֑הוּre.'E.huH7453; but hedid not cutבָתָֽר׃va.TarH1334the birdsהַצִפֹּ֖רha.tzi.PorH6833.

11And birdsהָעַ֖יִטha.'A.yitH5861ofH5861preyH5861cameH3381downוַיֵּ֥רֶדvai.Ye.redH3381upon the carcassesהַפְּגָרִ֑יםha.pe.ga.RimH6297,and Abramאַבְרָֽם׃'av.RamH87droveH5380them awayH5380.

12Now when the sunהַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ha.She.meshH8121was goingלָב֔וֹאla.Vo'H935down,a deepוְתַרְדֵּמָ֖הve.tar.de.MahH8639sleepH8639fellנָפְלָ֣הna.fe.LahH5307upon Abramאַבְרָ֑ם'av.RamH87;and beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009,terrorאֵימָ֛ה'ei.MahH367andgreatגְדֹלָ֖הge.do.LahH1419darknessחֲשֵׁכָ֥הcha.she.KhahH2825fellנֹפֶ֥לֶתno.Fe.letH5307upon him.

13Then Godsaidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Abramלְאַבְרָ֗םle.'av.RamH87, “KnowH3045forH3045certainH3045that yourdescendantsזַרְעֲךָ֗zar.'a.KhaH2233will be strangersגֵ֣ר׀gerH1616in a landבְּאֶ֙רֶץ֙be.'E.retzH776that is not theirsH1992, wherethey will be enslavedוַעֲבָד֖וּםva.'a.va.DumH5647and oppressedוְעִנּ֣וּve.'i.NuH6031forfourאַרְבַּ֥ע'ar.Ba'H702hundredמֵא֖וֹתme.'otH3967yearsשָׁנָֽה׃sha.NahH8141.

14But I will alsoוְגַ֧םve.GamH1571judgeדָּ֣ןdanH1777the nationהַגּ֛וֹיha.GoyH1471whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834they will serveיַעֲבֹ֖דוּya.'a.Vo.duH5647,and afterwardוְאַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֥ןve.'a.cha.rei- khenH310 H3651they will comeיֵצְא֖וּye.tze.'UH3318outH3318withmanyגָּדֽוֹל׃ga.DolH1419possessionsבִּרְכֻ֥שׁbir.KhushH7399.

15As for you,you shall goתָּב֥וֹאta.Vo'H935to your fathersאֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ'a.vo.Tei.khaH1in peaceבְּשָׁל֑וֹםbe.sha.LomH7965;you will be buriedתִּקָּבֵ֖רti.ka.VerH6912at a goodטוֹבָֽה׃to.VahH2896oldבְּשֵׂיבָ֥הbe.sei.VahH7872ageH7872.

16Then inthe fourthרְבִיעִ֖יre.vi.'IH7243generationוְד֥וֹרve.DorH1755they will returnיָשׁ֣וּבוּya.Shu.vuH7725hereהֵ֑נָּהHe.nahH2008, forthe wrongdoingעֲוֹ֥ן'a.VonH5771of the Amoriteהָאֱמֹרִ֖יha.'e.mo.RiH567is not yetעַד־ הֵֽנָּה׃'ad- He.nahH5704 H2008completeשָׁלֵ֛םsha.LemH8003.”

17Now it cameוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961aboutהָיָ֑הha.YahH1961,when the sunהַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ha.She.meshH8121had setבָּ֔אָהBa.'ahH935,that it was veryH5939darkH5939,and beholdוְהִנֵּ֨הve.hi.NehH2009,a smokingעָשָׁן֙'a.ShanH6227ovenתַנּ֤וּרta.NurH8574and a flamingאֵ֔שׁ'EshH784torchוְלַפִּ֣ידve.la.PidH3940appearedwhichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834passedעָבַ֔ר'a.VarH5674betweenבֵּ֖יןbeinH996theseהָאֵֽלֶּה׃ha.'E.lehH428piecesהַגְּזָרִ֥יםha.ge.za.RimH1506.

18On that dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068madeכָּרַ֧תka.RatH3772a covenantבְּרִ֣יתbe.RitH1285with Abramאַבְרָ֖ם'av.RamH87,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “To yourdescendantsלְזַרְעֲךָ֗le.zar.'a.KhaH2233I have givenנָתַ֙תִּי֙na.Ta.tiH5414thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776, Fromthe riverמִנְּהַ֣רmi.ne.HarH5104of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714as farעַד־'ad-H5704as the greatהַגָּדֹ֖לha.ga.DolH1419riverהַנָּהָ֥רha.na.HarH5104,the riverנְהַר־ne.har-H5104Euphratesפְּרָֽת׃pe.RatH6578:

19the land of theKeniteהַקֵּינִי֙ha.kei.NiH7017,the Kenizziteהַקְּנִזִּ֔יha.ke.ni.ZiH7074,the Kadmoniteהַקַּדְמֹנִֽי׃ha.kad.mo.NiH6935,

20the Hittiteהַחִתִּ֥יha.chi.TiH2850,the Perizziteהַפְּרִזִּ֖יha.pe.ri.ZiH6522,the Rephaimהָרְפָאִֽים׃ha.re.fa.'ImH7497,

21the Amoriteהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ha.'e.mo.RiH567,the Canaaniteהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669,the Girgashiteהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖יha.gir.ga.ShiH1622,and the Jebusiteהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ סhay.vu.SiH2983.”
