Jacob’s Deception

1Now it cameH1961aboutH1961,whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588Isaacיִצְחָ֔קyitz.ChakH3327wasH2204oldזָקֵ֣ןza.KenH2204andhis eyesעֵינָ֖יו'ei.NavH5869were tooH4480dimוַתִּכְהֶ֥יןָva.tikh.Hei.naH3543to seeמֵרְאֹ֑תme.re.'OtH7200,that he calledוַיִּקְרָ֞אvai.yik.Ra'H7121hisolderהַגָּדֹ֗לha.ga.DolH1419sonבְּנ֣וֹbe.NoH1121Esauעֵשָׂ֣ו׀'e.SavH6215and saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “My sonבְּנִ֔יbe.NiH1121.”And he saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Hereהִנֵּֽנִי׃hi.Ne.niH2009I am.”

2ThenIsaac saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Beholdהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009nowנָ֖אna'H4994,I amH2204oldזָקַ֑נְתִּיza.Kan.tiH2204andI do not knowיָדַ֖עְתִּיya.Da'.tiH3045the dayי֥וֹםYomH3117of my deathמוֹתִֽי׃mo.TiH4194.

3Nowוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258then, pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994takeשָׂא־sa'-H5375your gearכֵלֶ֔יךָkhe.Lei.khaH3627,your quiverתֶּלְיְךָ֖tel.ye.KhaH8522and your bowוְקַשְׁתֶּ֑ךָve.kash.Te.chaH7198,and goוְצֵא֙ve.Tze'H3318outH3318to the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֔הha.sa.DehH7704andhuntוְצ֥וּדָהve.Tzu.dahH6679gameצָֽיִד׃tzeidH6718for me;

4and prepareוַעֲשֵׂה־va.'a.seh-H6213a deliciousH4303mealH4303for me suchH3512asH3512I loveאָהַ֛בְתִּי'a.Hav.tiH157,and bringוְהָבִ֥יאָהve.ha.Vi.'ahH935it to me that I may eatוְאֹכֵ֑לָהve.'o.Khe.lahH398,soH5668thatH5668my soulנַפְשִׁ֖יnaf.ShiH5315may blessתְּבָרֶכְךָ֥te.va.rekh.KhaH1288you beforeבְּטֶ֥רֶםbe.Te.remH2962I dieאָמֽוּת׃'a.MutH4191.”

5Now Rebekahוְרִבְקָ֣הve.riv.KahH7259was listeningשֹׁמַ֔עַתsho.Ma.'atH8085while Isaacיִצְחָ֔קyitz.ChakH3327spokeבְּדַבֵּ֣רbe.da.BerH1696to his sonבְּנ֑וֹbe.NoH1121Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215.So when Esauעֵשָׂו֙'e.SavH6215wentוַיֵּ֤לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֔הha.sa.DehH7704to huntלָצ֥וּדla.TzudH6679for gameצַ֖יִדTza.yidH6718to bringלְהָבִֽיא׃le.ha.Vi'H935home,

6Rebekahוְרִבְקָה֙ve.riv.KahH7259saidH559to her sonבְּנָ֖הּbe.NahH1121Jacobיַעֲקֹ֥בya.'a.KoH3290, “Beholdהִנֵּ֤הhi.NehH2009,I heardשָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙sha.Ma'.tiH8085your fatherאָבִ֔יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1speakמְדַבֵּ֛רme.da.BerH1696to your brotherאָחִ֖יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Esauעֵשָׂ֥ו'e.SavH6215,sayingH559,

7‘Bringהָבִ֨יאָהha.Vi.'ahH935me somegameצַ֛יִדTza.yidH6718and prepareוַעֲשֵׂה־va.'a.seh-H6213a deliciousH4303mealH4303for me, so that I may eatוְאֹכֵ֑לָהve.'o.Khe.lahH398,and blessוַאֲבָרֶכְכָ֛הva.'a.va.rekh.KhahH1288you in the presenceלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440my deathמוֹתִֽי׃mo.TiH4194.’

8So nowוְעַתָּ֥הve.'a.TahH6258,my sonבְנִ֖יve.NiH1121,listenשְׁמַ֣עshe.Ma'H8085to meas I commandמְצַוָּ֥הme.tza.VahH6680you.

9Goלֶךְ־lekh-H1980nowנָא֙na'H4994to the flockהַצֹּ֔אןha.TzonH6629andbringוְקַֽח־ve.kach-H3947me twoשְׁנֵ֛יshe.NeiH8147choiceטֹבִ֑יםto.VimH2896youngH1423 H5795goatsעִזִּ֖ים'i.ZimH1423 H5795from thereמִשָּׁ֗םmi.ShamH8033,so that I may prepareוְאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֨הve.'e.'e.SehH6213them asa deliciousH4303mealH4303for your fatherלְאָבִ֖יךָle.'a.Vi.khaH1,suchH3512asH3512he lovesאָהֵֽב׃'a.HevH157.

10Then you shall bringוְהֵבֵאתָ֥ve.he.ve.TaH935itto your fatherלְאָבִ֖יךָle.'a.Vi.khaH1,that he may eatוְאָכָ֑לve.'a.KhalH398,soH5668 H834thatH5668 H834he may blessיְבָרֶכְךָ֖ye.va.rekh.KhaH1288you beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440his deathמוֹתֽוֹ׃mo.ToH4194.”

11But Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his motherאִמּ֑וֹ'i.MoH517Rebekahרִבְקָ֖הriv.KahH7259, “Beholdהֵ֣ןhenH2005,my brotherאָחִי֙'a.ChiH251Esauעֵשָׂ֤ו'e.SavH6215is ahairyשָׂעִ֔רsa.'IrH8163manאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376and I am a smoothחָלָֽק׃cha.LakH2509manאִ֥ישׁ'ishH376.

12Perhapsאוּלַ֤י'u.LaiH194my fatherאָבִ֔י'a.ViH1will touchיְמֻשֵּׁ֙נִי֙ye.mu.She.niH4959me, then I will be like adeceiverכִּמְתַעְתֵּ֑עַkim.ta'.Te.a'H8591in his sightבְעֵינָ֖יוve.'ei.NavH5869,and I will bringוְהֵבֵאתִ֥יve.he.ve.TiH935upon myself a curseקְלָלָ֖הke.la.LahH7045and not a blessingבְרָכָֽה׃ve.ra.KhahH1293.”

13But his motherאִמּ֔וֹ'i.MoH517saidוַתֹּ֤אמֶרva.To.merH559to him, “Your curseקִלְלָתְךָ֖ki.la.te.ChaH7045be on me, my sonבְּנִ֑יbe.NiH1121;onlyאַ֛ךְ'akhH389obeyשְׁמַ֥עshe.Ma'H8085my voiceבְּקֹלִ֖יbe.ko.LiH6963,and goוְלֵ֥ךְve.LekhH1980,getקַֽח־kach-H3947the goats for me.”

14So he wentוַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙vai.Ye.lekhH1980and gotוַיִּקַּ֔חvai.yi.KachH3947them,and broughtוַיָּבֵ֖אvai.ya.Ve'H935themto his motherלְאִמּ֑וֹle.'i.MoH517;and his motherאִמּוֹ֙'i.MoH517madeוַתַּ֤עַשׂva.Ta.'asH6213a deliciousH4303mealH4303suchH3512asH3512his fatherאָבִֽיו׃'a.VivH1lovedאָהֵ֥ב'a.HevH157.

15Then Rebekahרִ֠בְקָהRiv.kahH7259tookוַתִּקַּ֣חva.ti.KachH3947thebestH2536garmentsבִּגְדֵ֨יbig.DeiH899of her elderהַגָּדֹל֙ha.ga.DolH1419sonבְּנָ֤הּbe.NahH1121Esauעֵשָׂ֜ו'e.SavH6215,whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834were with her in the houseבַּבָּ֑יִתba.Ba.yitH1004,and putH3847them onH3847her youngerהַקָּטָֽן׃ha.ka.TanH6996sonבְּנָ֥הּbe.NahH1121Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290.

16And she putהִלְבִּ֖ישָׁהhil.Bi.shahH3847the skinsעֹרֹת֙'o.RotH5785of theyoungH1423 H5795goatsהָֽעִזִּ֔יםha.'i.ZimH1423 H5795on his handsיָדָ֑יוya.DavH3027and on the smoothH2513partH2513of his neckצַוָּארָֽיו׃tza.va.RavH6677.

17She also gaveוַתִּתֵּ֧ןva.ti.TenH5414the deliciousH4303mealH4303and the breadהַלֶּ֖חֶםha.Le.chemH3899whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834she had madeעָשָׂ֑תָה'a.Sa.tahH6213to her sonבְּנָֽהּ׃be.NahH1121Jacobיַעֲקֹ֥בya.'a.KoH3290.

18Then he cameוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935to his fatherאָבִ֖יו'a.VivH1and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “My fatherאָבִ֑י'a.ViH1.”And he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Hereהִנֶּ֔נִּיhi.Ne.niH2009I am. Whoמִ֥יmiH4310are you, my sonבְּנִֽי׃be.NiH1121?”

19Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his fatherאָבִ֗יו'a.VivH1, “I am Esauעֵשָׂ֣ו'e.SavH6215your firstbornבְּכֹרֶ֔ךָbe.kho.Rekh.khaH1060;I have doneעָשִׂ֕יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213as you toldדִּבַּ֖רְתָּdi.Bar.taH1696me.Comeקֽוּם־kum-H6965nowנָ֣אna'H4994,sitשְׁבָ֗הshe.VahH3427and eatוְאָכְלָה֙ve.'a.khe.LahH398of my gameמִצֵּידִ֔יmi.tzei.DiH6718,soH5668thatH5668you may blessתְּבָרֲכַ֥נִּיte.va.ra.Kha.niH1288me.”

20Isaacיִצְחָק֙yitz.ChakH3327saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his sonבְּנ֔וֹbe.NoH1121, “Howמַה־mah-H4100is it that you haveלִמְצֹ֖אlim.Tzo'H4672itso quicklyמִהַ֥רְתָּmi.Har.taH4116,my sonבְּנִ֑יbe.NiH1121?”And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430madeH7136itcomeH7136to me.”

21Then Isaacיִצְחָק֙yitz.ChakH3327saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290, “Pleaseנָּ֥אna'H4994comeH5066closeH5066, so thatI may feelוַאֲמֻֽשְׁךָ֖va.'a.mush.KhaH4184you, my sonבְּנִ֑יbe.NiH1121,whether you are reallyזֶ֛הzehH2088my sonבְּנִ֥יbe.NiH1121Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215orאִם־'im-H518not.”

22So Jacobיַעֲקֹ֛בya.'a.KoH3290cameH5066closeH5066to his fatherאָבִ֖יו'a.VivH1Isaacיִצְחָ֥קyitz.ChakH3327,and he touchedוַיְמֻשֵּׁ֑הוּvay.mu.She.huH4959him and saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “The voiceהַקֹּל֙ha.KolH6963is the voiceק֣וֹלKolH6963of Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290,but the handsוְהַיָּדַ֖יִםve.hai.ya.Da.yimH3027are the handsיְדֵ֥יye.DeiH3027of Esauעֵשָֽׂו׃'e.SavH6215.”

23And he did not recognizeהִכִּיר֔וֹhi.ki.RoH5234him, becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588his handsיָדָ֗יוya.DavH3027werehairyשְׂעִרֹ֑תse.'i.RotH8163like his brotherאָחִ֖יו'a.ChivH251Esau’sעֵשָׂ֥ו'e.SavH6215handsכִּידֵ֛יki.DeiH3027;so he blessedוַֽיְבָרְכֵֽהוּ׃Vay.va.re.Khe.huH1288him.

24And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Are you reallyזֶ֖הzehH2088my sonבְּנִ֣יbe.NiH1121Esauעֵשָׂ֑ו'e.SavH6215?”And he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I am.”

25So he saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Bringהַגִּ֤שָׁהha.Gi.shahH5066itto me, and I will eatוְאֹֽכְלָה֙ve.'o.khe.LahH398of my son’sבְּנִ֔יbe.NiH1121gameמִצֵּ֣ידmi.TzeidH6718, thatI may blessתְּבָֽרֶכְךָ֖te.va.rekh.KhaH1288you.” And he broughtוַיַּגֶּשׁ־vai.ya.gesh-H5066itto him, and he ateוַיֹּאכַ֔לvai.yo.KhalH398;he also broughtוַיָּ֧בֵאvai.Ya.ve'H935him wineיַ֖יִןYa.yinH3196and he drankוַיֵּֽשְׁתְּ׃vai.Ye.shetH8354.

26Then his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1Isaacיִצְחָ֣קyitz.ChakH3327saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Pleaseנָּ֥אna'H4994comeH5066closeH5066and kissוּשְׁקָה־u.she.kah-H5401me, my sonבְּנִֽי׃be.NiH1121.”

27So he cameH5066closeH5066and kissedוַיִּשַּׁק־vai.yi.shak-H5401him; and when he smelledרֵ֥יחַRei.achH7381the smellרֵ֣יחַRei.achH7381of his garmentsבְּגָדָ֖יוbe.ga.DavH899, heblessedוַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֑הוּvay.va.ra.Khe.huH1288him and saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Seeרְאֵה֙re.'EhH7200,the smellכְּרֵ֣יחַke.Rei.achH7381of my sonבְּנִ֔יbe.NiH1121Is like the smellH7381of a fieldשָׂדֶ֔הsa.DehH7704whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068has blessedבֵּרֲכ֖וֹbe.ra.KhoH1288;

28Now mayGodהָאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430giveוְיִֽתֶּן־ve.yi.ten-H5414you of the dewמִטַּל֙mi.TalH2919of heavenהַשָּׁמַ֔יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064, And of thefatnessH8082of the earthהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,And an abundanceוְרֹ֥בve.RoH7230of grainדָּגָ֖ןda.GanH1715and newוְתִירֹֽשׁ׃ve.ti.RoshH8492wineH8492;

29May peoplesעַמִּ֗ים'a.MimH5971serveיַֽעַבְד֣וּךָya.'av.Du.khaH5647you,And nationsלְאֻמִּ֔יםle.'u.MimH3816bowH2331downH2331to you;Be masterגְבִיר֙ge.VirH1376of your brothersלְאַחֶ֔יךָle.'a.Chei.khaH251,And may your mother’sאִמֶּ֑ךָ'i.Me.khaH517sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121bowH2331downH2331to you.Cursedאֹרְרֶ֣יךָ'o.re.Rei.khaH779be those who curseאָר֔וּר'a.RurH779you,And blessedוּֽמְבָרֲכֶ֖יךָu.me.va.ra.Khei.khaH1288be those who blessבָּרֽוּךְ׃ba.RukhH1288you.”

The Stolen Blessing

30Now it cameוַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961aboutוַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961,asH3512soonH3512asH3512Isaacיִצְחָק֮yitz.ChakH3327had finishedכִּלָּ֣הki.LahH3615blessingלְבָרֵ֣ךְle.va.RekhH1288Jacobיַעֲקֹב֒ya.'a.KoH3290,and Jacobיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290had hardlyאַ֣ךְ'akhH389 H3318goneH3318outH3318from the presenceפְּנֵ֖יpe.NeiH6440of his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1Isaacיִצְחָ֣קyitz.ChakH3327,that his brotherאָחִ֔יו'a.ChivH251Esauוְעֵשָׂ֣וve.'e.SavH6215cameH935inH935from his huntingמִצֵּידֽוֹ׃mi.tzei.DoH6718.

31Then he alsoגַּם־gam-H1571madeוַיַּ֤עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213a deliciousH4303mealH4303,and broughtוַיָּבֵ֖אvai.ya.Ve'H935it to his fatherלְאָבִ֑יוle.'a.VivH1;and he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his fatherלְאָבִ֗יוle.'a.VivH1, “Let my fatherאָבִי֙'a.ViH1ariseיָקֻ֤םya.KumH6965and eatוְיֹאכַל֙ve.yo.KhalH398of his son’sבְּנ֔וֹbe.NoH1121gameמִצֵּ֣ידmi.TzeidH6718, thatyou may blessתְּבָרֲכַ֥נִּיte.va.ra.Kha.niH1288me.”

32His fatherאָבִ֖יו'a.VivH1Isaacיִצְחָ֥קyitz.ChakH3327saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Whoמִי־mi-H4310are you?” And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I am your sonבִּנְךָ֥bin.KhaH1121,your firstbornבְכֹֽרְךָ֖ve.kho.re.KhaH1060,Esauעֵשָֽׂו׃'e.SavH6215.”

33Then Isaacיִצְחָ֣קyitz.ChakH3327trembledוַיֶּחֱרַ֨דvai.ye.che.RadH2729violentlyחֲרָדָה֮ גְּדֹלָ֣ה עַד־ מְאֹד֒cha.ra.Dah ge.do.Lah 'ad- me.'OdH2731 H1419 H5704 H3966,and saidוַיֹּ֡אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whoמִֽי־mi-H4310thenאֵפ֡וֹא'e.Fo'H645was he who huntedהַצָּֽד־ha.tzad-H6679gameצַיִד֩tza.YidH6718and broughtוַיָּ֨בֵאvai.Ya.ve'H935itto me, so that I ateוָאֹכַ֥לva.'o.KhalH398from allמִכֹּ֛לmi.KolH3605of itbeforeבְּטֶ֥רֶםbe.Te.remH2962you cameתָּב֖וֹאta.Vo'H935,and blessedוָאֲבָרֲכֵ֑הוּva.'a.va.ra.Khe.huH1288him?Yesגַּם־gam-H1571, andhe shall be blessedבָּר֖וּךְba.RukhH1288.”

34When Esauעֵשָׂו֙'e.SavH6215heardכִּשְׁמֹ֤עַkish.Mo.a'H8085the wordsדִּבְרֵ֣יdiv.ReiH1697of his fatherאָבִ֔יו'a.VivH1,he criedH6817outH6817with an exceedinglyמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966greatגְּדֹלָ֥הge.do.LahH1419and bitterוּמָרָ֖הu.ma.RahH4751cryצְעָקָ֔הtze.'a.KahH6818,and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his fatherלְאָבִ֔יוle.'a.VivH1, “Blessבָּרֲכֵ֥נִיba.ra.Khe.niH1288me, me asH1571wellH1571,my fatherאָבִֽי׃'a.ViH1!”

35And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Your brotherאָחִ֖יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251cameבָּ֥אba'H935deceitfullyבְּמִרְמָ֑הbe.mir.MahH4820and has takenוַיִּקַּ֖חvai.yi.KachH3947away your blessingבִּרְכָתֶֽךָ׃bir.kha.Te.khaH1293.”

36Then Esausaidוַיֹּ֡אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Is he not rightly namedקָרָ֨א שְׁמ֜וֹka.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290,for he has betrayedוַֽיַּעְקְבֵ֙נִי֙vai.ya'.ke.Ve.niH6117me theseזֶ֣הzehH2088twoפַעֲמַ֔יִםfa.'a.Ma.yimH6471timesH6471?He tookלָקָ֔חla.KachH3947away my birthrightבְּכֹרָתִ֣יbe.kho.ra.TiH1062,and beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009,nowעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258he has takenלָקַ֣חla.KachH3947away my blessingבִּרְכָתִ֑יbir.kha.TiH1293.”And he saidוַיֹּאמַ֕רvai.yo.MarH559, “Have you not reservedאָצַ֥לְתָּ'a.Tzal.taH680a blessingבְּרָכָֽה׃be.ra.KhahH1293for me?”

37But Isaacיִצְחָ֜קyitz.ChakH3327repliedוַיַּ֨עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030to Esauלְעֵשָׂ֗וle.'e.SavH6215, “Beholdהֵ֣ןhenH2005,I have madeשַׂמְתִּ֥יוsam.TivH7760himyour masterגְּבִ֞ירge.VirH1376,and I have givenנָתַ֤תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414to him allכָּל־kol-H3605his relativesאֶחָ֗יו'e.ChavH251as servantsלַעֲבָדִ֔יםla.'a.va.DimH5650;and with grainוְדָגָ֥ןve.da.GanH1715and newוְתִירֹ֖שׁve.ti.RoshH8492wineH8492I have sustainedסְמַכְתִּ֑יוse.makh.TivH5564him. Whatמָ֥הmahH4100thenאֵפ֔וֹא'e.Fo'H645can I doאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה'e.'e.SehH6213for you, my sonבְּנִֽי׃be.NiH1121?”

38Esauעֵשָׂ֜ו'e.SavH6215saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his fatherאָבִ֗יו'a.VivH1, “Do you have only oneאַחַ֤ת'a.ChatH259blessingהַֽבְרָכָ֨הhav.ra.KhahH1293,my fatherאָבִ֔י'a.ViH1?Blessבָּרֲכֵ֥נִיba.ra.Khe.niH1288me, me asH1571wellH1571,my fatherאָבִ֑י'a.ViH1.”So Esauעֵשָׂ֛ו'e.SavH6215raisedוַיִּשָּׂ֥אvai.yi.Sa'H5375his voiceקֹל֖וֹko.LoH6963andweptוַיֵּֽבְךְּ׃vai.Ye.vekH1058.
