The Sons of Jacob

1Now when RachelH7354sawוַתֵּ֣רֶאva.Te.re'H7200thatshe had not borneH3205Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֔בle.ya.'a.KoH3290anychildrenH3205,she becameH7065jealousוַתְּקַנֵּ֥אva.te.ka.Ne'H7065of her sisterבַּאֲחֹתָ֑הּba.'a.cho.TahH269;and she saidוַתֹּ֤אמֶרva.To.merH559to Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290, “Giveהָֽבָה־ha.vah-H3051me childrenבָנִ֔יםva.NimH1121,or elseוְאִם־ אַ֖יִןve.'im- 'A.yinH518 H369I am going to dieמֵתָ֥הme.TahH4191.”

2Then Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290angerאַ֥ף'afH639burnedוַיִּֽחַר־vai.yi.char-H2734against Rachelבְּרָחֵ֑לbe.ra.ChelH7354,and he saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Am I inH8478the placeהֲתַ֤חַתha.Ta.chatH8478ofH8478Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430,whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834haswithheldמָנַ֥עma.Na'H4513from you the fruitפְּרִי־pe.ri-H6529of the wombבָֽטֶן׃Va.tenH990?”

3Then she saidוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Hereהִנֵּ֛הhi.NehH2009is my femaleH519slaveH519Bilhahבִלְהָ֖הvil.HahH1090:haveH935relationsH935withH935her that she maygiveH3205birthH3205on my kneesבִּרְכַּ֔יbir.KaiH1290, so thatby her I tooגַם־gam-H1571may obtainH1129a childH1129.”

4Soshe gaveוַתִּתֶּן־va.ti.ten-H5414him her slaveשִׁפְחָתָ֖הּshif.cha.TahH8198Bilhahבִּלְהָ֥הbil.HahH1090as a wifeלְאִשָּׁ֑הle.'i.ShahH802,and Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290hadH935relationsH935withH935her.

5Bilhahבִּלְהָ֔הbil.HahH1090conceivedוַתַּ֣הַרva.Ta.harH2029and boreוַתֵּ֥לֶדva.Te.ledH3205Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֖בle.ya.'a.KoH3290a sonבֵּֽן׃BenH1121.

6Then Rachelרָחֵל֙ra.ChelH7354saidוַתֹּ֤אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430hasvindicatedדָּנַ֣נִּיda.Na.niH1777me, and has indeedוְגַם֙ve.GamH1571heardשָׁמַ֣עsha.Ma'H8085my voiceבְּקֹלִ֔יbe.ko.LiH6963and has givenוַיִּתֶּן־vai.yi.ten-H5414me a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121.”Thereforeעַל־ כֵּ֛ן'al- kenH5921 H3651she namedקָרְאָ֥הka.re.'AhH7121himDanדָּֽן׃DanH1835.

7And Rachel’sרָחֵ֑לra.ChelH7354slaveשִׁפְחַ֣תshif.ChatH8198Bilhahבִּלְהָ֖הbil.HahH1090conceivedוַתַּ֣הַרva.Ta.harH2029againע֔וֹדodH5750and boreוַתֵּ֕לֶדva.Te.ledH3205Jacobלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃le.ya.'a.KoH3290a secondשֵׁנִ֖יshe.NiH8145sonבֵּ֥ןbenH1121.

8So Rachelרָחֵ֗לra.ChelH7354saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Withmightyאֱלֹהִ֧ים׀'E.lo.HimH430wrestlingנַפְתּוּלֵ֨יnaf.tu.LeiH5319I havewrestledנִפְתַּ֛לְתִּיnif.Tal.tiH6617with my sisterאֲחֹתִ֖י'a.cho.TiH269, andI have indeedגַּם־gam-H1571prevailedיָכֹ֑לְתִּיya.Kho.le.tiH3201.”And she namedוַתִּקְרָ֥אva.tik.Ra'H7121him Naphtaliנַפְתָּלִֽי׃naf.ta.LiH5321.

9When Leahלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812sawוַתֵּ֣רֶאva.Te.re'H7200that she had stoppedעָמְדָ֖ה'a.me.DahH5975havingH3205childrenH3205,she tookוַתִּקַּח֙va.ti.KachH3947her slaveשִׁפְחָתָ֔הּshif.cha.TahH8198Zilpahזִלְפָּ֣הzil.PahH2153and gaveוַתִּתֵּ֥ןva.ti.TenH5414her to Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֖בle.ya.'a.KoH3290as a wifeלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.

10And Leah’sלֵאָ֖הle.'AhH3812slaveשִׁפְחַ֥תshif.ChatH8198Zilpahזִלְפָּ֛הzil.PahH2153boreוַתֵּ֗לֶדva.Te.ledH3205Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֥בle.ya.'a.KoH3290a sonבֵּֽן׃BenH1121.

11Then Leahלֵאָ֖הle.'AhH3812saidוַתֹּ֥אמֶרva.To.merH559, “How fortunateבָּ֣אגָ֑דbe.be.//gadgadH1409!”So she namedוַתִּקְרָ֥אva.tik.Ra'H7121himGadגָּֽד׃GadH1410.

12And Leah’sלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812slaveשִׁפְחַ֣תshif.ChatH8198Zilpahזִלְפָּה֙zil.PahH2153boreוַתֵּ֗לֶדva.Te.ledH3205Jacobלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃le.ya.'a.KoH3290a secondשֵׁנִ֖יshe.NiH8145sonבֵּ֥ןbenH1121.

13Then Leahלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Happyבְּאָשְׁרִ֕יbe.'a.she.RiH837am I! For womenבָּנ֑וֹתba.NotH1323will callוַתִּקְרָ֥אva.tik.Ra'H7121me happyאִשְּׁר֖וּנִי'i.she.Ru.niH833.”So she namedH7121himAsherאָשֵֽׁר׃'a.SherH836.

14Now in the daysבִּימֵ֣יbi.MeiH3117of wheatחִטִּ֗יםchi.TimH2406harvestקְצִיר־ke.tzir-H7105Reubenרְאוּבֵ֜ןre.'u.VenH7205wentוַיֵּ֨לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980and foundוַיִּמְצָ֤אvai.yim.Tza'H4672mandrakeH1736fruitsH1736in the fieldבַּשָּׂדֶ֔הba.sa.DehH7704,and broughtוַיָּבֵ֣אvai.ya.Ve'H935them to his motherאִמּ֑וֹ'i.MoH517Leahלֵאָ֖הle.'AhH3812.Then Rachelרָחֵל֙ra.ChelH7354saidוַתֹּ֤אמֶרva.To.merH559to Leahלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812, “Pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994giveתְּנִי־te.ni-H5414me someH4480of your son’sבְּנֵֽךְ׃be.NekhH1121mandrakesH1736.”

15But she saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559to her, “Is it a smallהַמְעַט֙ham.'AtH4592matterH4592for you to takeקַחְתֵּ֣ךְkach.TekhH3947my husbandאִישִׁ֔י'i.ShiH376?And would you takeוְלָקַ֕חַתve.la.Ka.chatH3947my son’sבְּנִ֑יbe.NiH1121mandrakesדּוּדָאֵ֖יdu.da.'EiH1736alsoגַּ֥םgamH1571?”So Rachelרָחֵ֗לra.ChelH7354saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Thereforeלָכֵן֙la.KhenH3651he may sleepיִשְׁכַּ֤בyish.KavH7901with you tonightהַלַּ֔יְלָהha.Lay.lahH3915inH8478returnH8478forH8478your son’sבְנֵֽךְ׃ve.NekhH1121mandrakesדּוּדָאֵ֥יdu.da.'EiH1736.”

16When Jacobיַעֲקֹ֣בya.'a.KoH3290cameH935inH935from the fieldהַשָּׂדֶה֮ha.sa.DehH7704in the eveningבָּעֶרֶב֒ba.'e.RevH6153,Leahלֵאָ֜הle.'AhH3812wentH3318outH3318to meetלִקְרָאת֗וֹlik.ra.ToH7122him and saidוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙va.To.merH559, “You must haveH935relationsH935withH935me, for I have indeedשָׂכֹ֣רsa.KhorH7936hiredשְׂכַרְתִּ֔יךָse.khar.Ti.khaH7936you with my son’sבְּנִ֑יbe.NiH1121mandrakesבְּדוּדָאֵ֖יbe.du.da.'EiH1736.”So he sleptוַיִּשְׁכַּ֥בvai.yish.KavH7901with her that nightבַּלַּ֥יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915.

18Then Leahלֵאָ֗הle.'AhH3812saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430has givenנָתַ֤ןna.TanH5414me myrewardשְׂכָרִ֔יse.kha.RiH7939,becauseאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834I gaveנָתַ֥תִּיna.Ta.tiH5414my slaveשִׁפְחָתִ֖יshif.cha.TiH8198to my husbandלְאִישִׁ֑יle.'i.ShiH376.”So she namedוַתִּקְרָ֥אva.tik.Ra'H7121him Issacharיִשָּׂשכָֽר׃yi.so.sh.KharH3485.

19And Leahלֵאָ֔הle.'AhH3812conceivedוַתַּ֤הַרva.Ta.harH2029againעוֹד֙'OdH5750and boreוַתֵּ֥לֶדva.Te.ledH3205a sixthשִׁשִּׁ֖יshi.ShiH8345sonבֵּן־ben-H1121to Jacobלְּיַעֲקֹֽב׃le.ya.'a.KoH3290.

20Then Leahלֵאָ֗הle.'AhH3812saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Godאֱלֹהִ֥ים׀'E.lo.HimH430has endowedזְבָדַ֨נִיze.va.Da.niH2064me with a goodטוֹב֒tOvH2896giftזֵ֣בֶדZe.vedH2065;finallyהַפַּ֙עַם֙ha.Pa.'amH6471my husbandאִישִׁ֔י'i.ShiH376will acknowledgeיִזְבְּלֵ֣נִיyiz.be.Le.niH2082me as his wife,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588I have borneיָלַ֥דְתִּיya.Lad.tiH3205him sixשִׁשָּׁ֣הshi.ShahH8337sonsבָנִ֑יםva.NimH1121.”So she namedוַתִּקְרָ֥אva.tik.Ra'H7121him Zebulunזְבֻלֽוּן׃ze.vu.LunH2074.

21Afterwardוְאַחַ֖רve.'a.CharH310she gaveH3205birthH3205to a daughterבַּ֑תBatH1323,and namedוַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּva.tik.Ra' she.MahH7121 H8034her Dinahדִּינָֽה׃di.NahH1783.

22ThenGodאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430rememberedוַיִּזְכֹּ֥רvai.yiz.KorH2142Rachelרָחֵ֑לra.ChelH7354,and Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430listenedוַיִּשְׁמַ֤עvai.yish.Ma'H8085to her andopenedוַיִּפְתַּ֖חvai.yif.TachH6605her wombרַחְמָֽהּ׃rach.MahH7358.

23So she conceivedוַתַּ֖הַרva.Ta.harH2029and gaveH3205birthH3205to a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121,and saidוַתֹּ֕אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Godאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430hastakenH622awayH622my disgraceחֶרְפָּתִֽי׃cher.pa.TiH2781.”

24And she namedוַתִּקְרָ֧א שְׁמ֛וֹva.tik.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034him Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “May the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068giveיֹסֵ֧ףyo.SefH3254me anotherאַחֵֽר׃'a.CherH312sonבֵּ֥ןbenH1121.”

25Now it cameH1961aboutH1961,whenH3512Rachelרָחֵ֖לra.ChelH7354had givenH3205birthH3205to Josephיוֹסֵ֑ףyo.SefH3130,that Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Labanלָבָ֔ןla.VanH3837, “Sendשַׁלְּחֵ֙נִי֙sha.le.Che.niH7971me awayH7971,so that I may goוְאֵ֣לְכָ֔הve.'E.le.KhahH1980to my own placeמְקוֹמִ֖יme.ko.MiH4725and to my own countryוּלְאַרְצִֽי׃u.le.'ar.TziH776.

26Giveתְּנָ֞הte.NahH5414memy wivesנָשַׁ֣יna.ShaiH802and my childrenיְלָדַ֗יye.la.DaiH3206for whomאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834I have servedעָבַ֧דְתִּי'a.Vad.tiH5647you, and let me goוְאֵלֵ֑כָהve.'e.Le.khahH1980;for you yourselfאַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH859knowיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045my serviceעֲבֹדָתִ֖י'a.vo.da.TiH5656whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I haverenderedעֲבַדְתִּֽיךָ׃'a.vad.Ti.khaH5647you.”

27But Labanלָבָ֔ןla.VanH3837saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Ifאִם־'im-H518it pleasesמָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ןma.Tza.ti chenH4672 H2580you atH4994allH4994, stay with me;I have determinedH5172byH5172divinationנִחַ֕שְׁתִּיni.Chash.tiH5172that the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068has blessedוַיְבָרֲכֵ֥נִיvay.va.ra.Khe.niH1288me on your accountבִּגְלָלֶֽךָ׃big.la.Le.khaH1558.”

28Hecontinuedוַיֹּאמַ֑רvai.yo.MarH559, “Nameנָקְבָ֧הna.ke.VahH5344me your wagesשְׂכָרְךָ֛se.kha.re.KhaH7939,and I will giveוְאֶתֵּֽנָה׃ve.'e.Te.nahH5414them.”

29But Jacobsaidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “You yourselfאַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH859knowיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045howאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH854 H834I have servedעֲבַדְתִּ֑יךָ'a.vad.Ti.khaH5647you and howאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H854 H834your livestockמִקְנְךָ֖mik.ne.ChaH4735havefaredהָיָ֥הha.YahH1961with me.

30For you hadהָיָ֨הha.YahH1961littleמְעַט֩me.'AtH4592beforeלְפָנַי֙le.fa.NaiH6440I came, and it hasincreasedוַיִּפְרֹ֣ץvai.yif.RotzH6555to a multitudeלָרֹ֔בla.RoH7230,and the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068has blessedוַיְבָ֧רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288youwherever I turnedלְרַגְלִ֑יle.rag.LiH7272.But nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258,whenמָתַ֛יma.TaiH4970shall I provideאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה'e.'e.SehH6213for my own householdלְבֵיתִֽי׃le.vei.TiH1004alsoגַם־gam-H1571?”

31So he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמָ֣הmahH4100shall I giveאֶתֶּן־'e.ten-H5414you?” And Jacobיַעֲקֹב֙ya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “You shall not giveתִתֶּן־ti.ten-H5414me anythingמְא֔וּמָהme.'U.mahH3972.Ifאִם־'im-H518you will doתַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ta.'a.seh-H6213thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088onethingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697for me, I will againאָשׁ֛וּבָה'a.Shu.vahH7725pastureאֶרְעֶ֥ה'er.'EhH7462andkeepאֶשְׁמֹֽר׃'esh.MorH8104your flockצֹֽאנְךָ֖tzo.ne.KhaH6629:

32let me passאֶֽעֱבֹ֨ר'e.'e.VorH5674through your entireבְּכָל־be.kholH3605flockצֹֽאנְךָ֜tzo.ne.KhaH6629todayהַיּ֗וֹםhai.YomH3117,removingהָסֵ֨רha.SerH5493from thereמִשָּׁ֜םmi.ShamH8033everyכָּל־kol-H3605speckledנָקֹ֣דna.KodH5348or spottedוְטָל֗וּאve.ta.Lu'H2921sheepשֶׂ֣ה׀sehH7716and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605blackחוּם֙chumH2345sheepשֶׂה־seh-H7716among the lambsבַּכְּשָׂבִ֔יםba.ke.sa.VimH3775,and the spottedוְטָל֥וּאve.ta.Lu'H2921or speckledוְנָקֹ֖דve.na.KodH5348among the goatsבָּעִזִּ֑יםba.'i.ZimH5795; and thoseshall be my wagesשְׂכָרִֽי׃se.kha.RiH7939.

33So myhonestyצִדְקָתִי֙tzid.ka.TiH6666will answerוְעָֽנְתָה־ve.'a.ne.tah-H6030for me laterבְּי֣וֹם מָחָ֔רbe.Yom ma.CharH4279 H3117,whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588you comeתָב֥וֹאta.Vo'H935concerningעַל־'al-H5921mywagesשְׂכָרִ֖יse.kha.RiH7939.EveryH3605oneH3605that is not speckledנָקֹ֨דna.KodH5348or spottedוְטָל֜וּאve.ta.Lu'H2921among the goatsבָּֽעִזִּ֗יםba.'i.ZimH5795,or blackוְחוּם֙ve.ChumH2345among the lambsבַּכְּשָׂבִ֔יםba.ke.sa.VimH3775, if foundwith me, will be considered stolenגָּנ֥וּבga.NuvH1589.”

34Labanלָבָ֖ןla.VanH3837saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goodהֵ֑ןHenH2005,let it be according to your wordכִדְבָרֶֽךָ׃khid.va.Re.khaH1697.”

35So he removedוַיָּ֣סַרvai.Ya.sarH5493on that dayבַּיּוֹם֩bai.yOmH3117the stripedהָֽעֲקֻדִּ֣יםha.'a.ku.DimH6124or spottedוְהַטְּלֻאִ֗יםve.ha.te.lu.'ImH2921maleהַתְּיָשִׁ֜יםha.te.ya.ShimH8495goatsH8495,and allH3605the speckledהַנְּקֻדּ֣וֹתha.ne.ku.DotH5348or spottedוְהַטְּלֻאֹ֔תve.ha.te.lu.'OtH2921femaleהָֽעִזִּים֙ha.'i.ZimH5795goatsH5795,everyH3605oneH3605with whiteלָבָן֙la.VanH3836on it, and allH3605the blackH2345onesח֖וּםchumH2345among the sheepבַּכְּשָׂבִ֑יםba.ke.sa.VimH3775,and putוַיִּתֵּ֖ןvai.yi.TenH5414them in thecareבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of his sonsבָּנָֽיו׃ba.NavH1121.

36And he putוַיָּ֗שֶׂםvai.Ya.semH7760a distance ofthreeשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁתshe.Lo.shetH7969days’יָמִ֔יםya.MimH3117journeyדֶּ֚רֶךְDe.rekhH1870betweenH996himself and Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290,and Jacobוְיַעֲקֹ֗בve.ya.'a.KoH3290fedרֹעֶ֛הro.'EhH7462the restהַנּוֹתָרֹֽת׃ha.no.ta.RotH3498of Laban’sלָבָ֖ןla.VanH3837flocksצֹ֥אןtzonH6629.

37Then Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290tookוַיִּֽקַּֽח־vai.yi.kach-H3947freshלַ֖חlachH3892rodsמַקַּ֥לma.KalH4731of poplarלִבְנֶ֛הliv.NehH3839,almondוְל֣וּזve.LuzH3869,and planeוְעֶרְמ֑וֹןve.'er.MonH6196treesH6196,and peeledוַיְפַצֵּ֤לvay.fa.TzelH6478whiteלְבָנ֔וֹתle.va.NotH3836stripesפְּצָל֣וֹתpe.tza.LotH6479in them, exposingמַחְשֹׂף֙mach.SofH4286the whiteהַלָּבָ֔ןha.la.VanH3836that wasin the rodsהַמַּקְלֽוֹת׃ha.mak.LotH4731.

38He setוַיַּצֵּ֗גvai.ya.TzegH3322the rodsהַמַּקְלוֹת֙ha.mak.loTH4731whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had peeledפִּצֵּ֔לpi.TzelH6478in frontלְנֹ֣כַחle.No.khachH5227of the flocksהַצֹּ֤אןha.TzonH6629in the drinkingבָּרֳהָטִ֖יםbo.ro.ha.TimH7298troughsH7298, that is,in the wateringהַמָּ֑יִםha.Ma.yimH4325channelsבְּשִֽׁקֲת֣וֹתbe.shi.ka.TotH8268whereאֲשֶׁר֩'a.SherH834the flocksהַצֹּ֔אןha.TzonH6629cameתָּבֹ֨אןָta.Vo.naH935to drinkלִשְׁתּוֹת֙lish.toTH8354;and they matedוַיֵּחַ֖מְנָהvai.ye.Cham.nahH3179when they cameבְּבֹאָ֥ןbe.vo.'AnH935to drinkלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃lish.TotH8354.

39So the flocksהַצֹּ֖אןha.TzonH6629matedוַיֶּחֱמ֥וּvai.ye.che.MuH3179by the rodsהַמַּקְל֑וֹתha.mak.LotH4731,and the flocksהַצֹּ֔אןha.TzonH6629deliveredוַתֵּלַ֣דְןָva.te.Lad.naH3205stripedעֲקֻדִּ֥ים'a.ku.DimH6124,speckledנְקֻדִּ֖יםne.ku.DimH5348,and spottedוּטְלֻאִֽים׃u.te.lu.'ImH2921offspring.
