Joseph Deals Kindly with His Brothers

1Then Josephיוֹסֵ֜ףyo.SefH3130couldיָכֹ֨לya.KholH3201not controlלְהִתְאַפֵּ֗קle.hit.'a.PekH662himself in front of everyoneלְכֹ֤לle.KholH3605standingהַנִּצָּבִים֙ha.ni.tza.VimH5324beforeH5921him, and he shoutedוַיִּקְרָ֕אvai.yik.Ra'H7121, “Have everyoneכָל־khol-H3605leaveהוֹצִ֥יאוּho.Tzi.'uH3318 H4480me!” So therewas noH3808oneH376with himwhen Josephיוֹסֵ֖ףyo.SefH3130madeH3045himself knownH3045to his brothersאֶחָֽיו׃'e.ChavH251.

2Then heweptוַיִּתֵּ֥ן בִּבְכִ֑יvai.yi.Ten biv.KhiH5414 H6963 H1065so loudlyH6963that the EgyptiansH4714heardוַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּvai.yish.me.'UH8085it,and the householdבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Pharaohפַּרְעֹֽה׃par.'OhH6547heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֖עvai.yish.Ma'H8085about it.

3And Josephיוֹסֵ֤ףyo.SefH3130saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his brothersאֶחָיו֙'e.ChavH251, “I am Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130!Is my fatherאָבִ֖י'a.ViH1stillהַע֥וֹדha.'odH5750aliveחָ֑יChaiH2416?”But his brothersאֶחָיו֙'e.ChavH251couldיָכְל֤וּya.khe.LuH3201not answerלַעֲנ֣וֹתla.'a.NotH6030him, forthey were terrifiedנִבְהֲל֖וּniv.ha.LuH926in his presenceמִפָּנָֽיו׃mi.pa.NavH6440.

4Then Josephיוֹסֵ֧ףyo.SefH3130saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his brothersאֶחָ֛יו'e.ChavH251, “Pleaseנָ֥אna'H4994comeH5066closerH5066to me.” And they cameH5066closerH5066.And he saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I am your brotherאֲחִיכֶ֔ם'a.chi.KhemH251Josephיוֹסֵ֣ףyo.SefH3130,whomאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834yousoldמְכַרְתֶּ֥םme.khar.TemH4376to Egyptמִצְרָֽיְמָה׃mitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714.

5Nowוְעַתָּ֣ה׀ve.'a.TahH6258do not be grievedתֵּעָ֣צְב֗וּte.'A.tze.VuH6087or angryיִ֙חַר֙yi.charH2734with yourselvesבְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔םbe.'Ei.nei.KhemH5869becauseH3588you soldמְכַרְתֶּ֥םme.khar.TemH4376me hereהֵ֑נָּהHe.nahH2008, forGodאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430sentשְׁלָחַ֥נִיshe.la.Cha.niH7971me aheadלִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃lif.nei.KhemH6440of youto saveH4241livesH4241.

6For the famineהָרָעָ֖בha.ra.'AvH7458has beenin the landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776theseזֶ֛הzehH2088two yearsשְׁנָתַ֥יִםshe.na.Ta.yimH8141,and there are stillוְעוֹד֙ve.'OdH5750fiveחָמֵ֣שׁcha.MeshH2568yearsשָׁנִ֔יםsha.NimH8141in whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834thereH369willH369beH369neitherH369plowingחָרִ֖ישׁcha.RishH2758norH369harvestingוְקָצִּֽיר׃ve.ka.TzirH7105.

7SoGodאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430sentוַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֤נִיvai.yish.la.Che.niH7971me aheadלִפְנֵיכֶ֔םlif.nei.KhemH6440of you to ensureלָשׂ֥וּםla.SumH7760for you a remnantשְׁאֵרִ֖יתshe.'e.RitH7611on the earthבָּאָ֑רֶץba.'A.retzH776, and tokeepH2421you aliveוּלְהַחֲי֣וֹתu.le.ha.cha.YotH2421by a greatגְּדֹלָֽה׃ge.do.LahH1419deliveranceלִפְלֵיטָ֖הlif.lei.TahH6413.

9Hurryמַהֲרוּ֮ma.ha.RuH4116and goוַעֲל֣וּva.'a.LuH5927upH5927to my fatherאָבִי֒'a.ViH1, andsayוַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣םva.'a.mar.TemH559to him, ‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541your sonבִּנְךָ֣bin.KhaH1121Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130saysאָמַר֙'a.MarH559: “Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430has madeשָׂמַ֧נִיsa.Ma.niH7760me lordלְאָד֖וֹןle.'a.DonH113of allלְכָל־le.kholH3605Egyptמִצְרָ֑יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714;comeרְדָ֥הre.DahH3381downH3381to me, do not delayתַּעֲמֹֽד׃ta.'a.ModH5975.

10For you shall liveוְיָשַׁבְתָּ֣ve.ya.shav.TaH3427in the landבְאֶֽרֶץ־ve.'e.retz-H776ofGoshenגֹּ֗שֶׁןGo.shenH1657,and you shall be nearקָרוֹב֙ka.rOvH7138me, you and your childrenH1121and yourgrandchildrenH1121,and your flocksוְצֹאנְךָ֥ve.tzo.ne.KhaH6629and your herdsוּבְקָרְךָ֖u.ve.ka.re.ChaH1241and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605that you have.

11Thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033I will alsoprovideוְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֤יve.khil.kal.TiH3557for you, for there are stillע֛וֹדodH5750fiveחָמֵ֥שׁcha.MeshH2568yearsשָׁנִ֖יםsha.NimH8141of famineרָעָ֑בra.'AvH7458to come,and you and your householdוּבֵֽיתְךָ֖u.vei.te.KhaH1004and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605that you have would be impoverishedתִּוָּרֵ֛שׁti.va.ReshH3423.”’

12Beholdוְהִנֵּ֤הve.hi.NehH2009,your eyesעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙'ei.nei.KhemH5869seeרֹא֔וֹתro.'otH7200,and the eyesוְעֵינֵ֖יve.'ei.NeiH5869of my brotherאָחִ֣י'a.ChiH251Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֑יןvin.ya.MinH1144see,that it is my mouthפִ֖יfiH6310which is speakingהַֽמְדַבֵּ֥רham.da.BerH1696to you.

13Now you must tellוְהִגַּדְתֶּ֣םve.hi.gad.TemH5046my fatherלְאָבִ֗יle.'a.ViH1of allכָּל־kol-H3605my splendorכְּבוֹדִי֙ke.vo.DiH3519in Egyptבְּמִצְרַ֔יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714,and allכָּל־kol-H3605that you have seenרְאִיתֶ֑םre.'i.TemH7200;and you must hurryוּמִֽהַרְתֶּ֛םu.mi.har.TemH4116andbringוְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֥םve.ho.rad.TemH3381my fatherאָבִ֖י'a.ViH1downH3381hereהֵֽנָּה׃He.nahH2008.”

14Then he fellוַיִּפֹּ֛לvai.yi.PolH5307on his brotherאָחִ֖יו'a.ChivH251Benjamin’sבִנְיָמִֽן־vin.ya.min-H1144neckצַוְּארֵ֥יtza.ve.ReiH6677andweptוַיֵּ֑בְךְּvai.Ye.vekH1058,and Benjaminוּבִנְיָמִ֔ןu.vin.ya.MinH1144weptבָּכָ֖הba.KhahH1058on his neckצַוָּארָֽיו׃tza.va.RavH6677.

15And he kissedוַיְנַשֵּׁ֥קvay.na.ShekH5401allלְכָל־le.kholH3605his brothersאֶחָ֖יו'e.ChavH251and weptוַיֵּ֣בְךְּvai.Ye.vekH1058on them, and afterwardוְאַ֣חֲרֵי כֵ֔ןve.'A.cha.rei KhenH310 H3651his brothersאֶחָ֖יו'e.ChavH251talkedדִּבְּר֥וּdi.be.RuH1696with him.

16Now when thenewsוְהַקֹּ֣לve.ha.KolH6963was heardנִשְׁמַ֗עnish.Ma'H8085in Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹה֙par.'OhH6547houseבֵּ֤יתbeitH1004that Joseph’sיוֹסֵ֑ףyo.SefH3130brothersאֲחֵ֣י'a.CheiH251had comeבָּ֖אוּBa.'uH935, itpleasedוַיִּיטַב֙vai.yi.TavH3190 H5869Pharaohפַרְעֹ֔הfar.'OhH6547and his servantsעֲבָדָֽיו׃'a.va.DavH5650.

17Then Pharaohפַּרְעֹה֙par.'OhH6547saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Josephיוֹסֵ֔ףyo.SefH3130, “Sayאֱמֹ֥ר'e.MorH559to your brothersאַחֶ֖יךָ'a.Chei.khaH251, ‘Doעֲשׂ֑וּ'a.SuH6213thisH2088:loadטַֽעֲנוּ֙ta.'a.NuH2943your livestockבְּעִ֣ירְכֶ֔םbe.'I.re.KhemH1165andgoוּלְכוּ־ בֹ֖אוּu.le.khu- Vo.'uH1980 H935to the landאַ֥רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Canaanכְּנָֽעַן׃ke.Na.'anH3667,

18and takeוּקְח֧וּu.ke.ChuH3947your fatherאֲבִיכֶ֛ם'a.vi.KhemH1and your householdsבָּתֵּיכֶ֖םba.tei.KhemH1004and comeוּבֹ֣אוּu.Vo.'uH935to me; andI will giveוְאֶתְּנָ֣הve.'e.te.NahH5414you thebestטוּב֙tuvH2898of the landאֶ֣רֶץ'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,and you will eatוְאִכְל֖וּve.'ikh.LuH398the fatחֵ֥לֶבChe.levH2459of the landהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776.’

19Now you are orderedצֻוֵּ֖יתָהtzu.Vei.tahH6680, ‘Doעֲשׂ֑וּ'a.SuH6213thisH2088:takeקְחוּ־ke.chu-H3947wagonsעֲגָל֗וֹתa.ga.LotH5699from the landמֵאֶ֨רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֜יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714for your littleלְטַפְּכֶם֙le.ta.pe.KhemH2945onesH2945and for your wivesוְלִנְשֵׁיכֶ֔םve.lin.shei.KhemH802,and bringוּנְשָׂאתֶ֥םu.ne.sa.TemH5375your fatherאֲבִיכֶ֖ם'a.vi.KhemH1and comeוּבָאתֶֽם׃u.va.TemH935.

20And do notconcernתָּחֹ֖סta.ChosH2347 H5869yourselvesH5869with your propertyכְּלֵיכֶ֑םke.lei.KhemH3627, for thebestט֛וּבtuvH2898of allכָּל־kol-H3605the landאֶ֥רֶץ'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֖יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714is yours.’”

21Then the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478didוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־vai.ya.'a.su-H6213soכֵן֙khenH3651;and Josephיוֹסֵ֛ףyo.SefH3130gaveוַיִּתֵּ֨ןvai.yi.TenH5414themwagonsעֲגָל֖וֹתa.ga.LotH5699accordingעַל־'al-H5921to thecommandפִּ֣יpiH6310of Pharaohפַרְעֹ֑הfar.'OhH6547,and gaveוַיִּתֵּ֥ןvai.yi.TenH5414them provisionsצֵדָ֖הtze.DahH6720for the journeyלַדָּֽרֶךְ׃la.Da.rekhH1870.

25Then they wentH5927upH5927from Egyptמִמִּצְרָ֑יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714,and cameוַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙vai.ya.Vo.'uH935to the landאֶ֣רֶץ'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667,to their fatherאֲבִיהֶֽם׃'a.vi.HemH1Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290.

26And they toldוַיַּגִּ֨דוּvai.ya.Gi.duH5046him, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, “Josephיוֹסֵ֣ףyo.SefH3130is stillע֚וֹדodH5750aliveחַ֔יChaiH2416,and indeedH3588he is rulerמֹשֵׁ֖לmo.ShelH4910over allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the landאֶ֣רֶץ'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרָ֑יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714.” Buthe was stunnedוַיָּ֣פָגvai.Ya.fogH6313, forhe did not believeהֶאֱמִ֖יןhe.'e.MinH539them.

28Then Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “It is enoughרַ֛בravH7227;my sonבְּנִ֖יbe.NiH1121Josephיוֹסֵ֥ףyo.SefH3130is stillעוֹד־'od-H5750aliveחָ֑יChaiH2416.I will goאֵֽלְכָ֥ה'e.le.KhahH1980and seeוְאֶרְאֶ֖נּוּve.'er.'E.nuH7200him beforeבְּטֶ֥רֶםbe.Te.remH2962I dieאָמֽוּת׃'a.MutH4191.”
