11At that 2timeG2540 3HerodG2264 the tetrarchG5068 heardG191 the newsG189 about JesusG2424, 2and saidG3004 to his servantsG3816, “4ThisG3778 is JohnG2491 the BaptistG910; 5he has risenG1453 from the deadG3498, and that is whyG1223 miraculousG1411 powersG1411 are at workG1754 in him.”
3For when 6HerodG2264 had JohnG2491 arrestedG2902, he boundG1210 him and putG659 him 7in prisonG5438 becauseG1223 of 8HerodiasG2266, the wifeG1135 of his brotherG80 PhilipG5376. 4For JohnG2491 had been sayingG3004 to him, “9It is not lawfulG1832 for you to haveG2192 her.” 5Although Herod wantedG2309 to putG615 him to deathG615, he fearedG5399 the crowdG3793, becauseG3754 they regardedG2192 10JohnG846 as 11a prophetG4396.
6But when Herod’sG2264 birthdayG1077 cameG1096, the daughterG2364 of 12HerodiasG2266 dancedG3738 13beforeG1722G3319 them and pleasedG700 14HerodG2264, 7soG3606 much that he promisedG3670 with an oathG3727 to giveG1325 her whateverG3739G1437 she askedG154. 8Having been promptedG4264 by her motherG3384, she saidG5346, “GiveG1325 me hereG5602 on a platterG4094 the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG910.” 9Although he was grievedG3076, the kingG935 commandedG2753 it to be givenG1325 becauseG1223 of his oathsG3727, and because of 15his dinnerG4873 guestsG4873. 10He sentG3992 and had JohnG2491 beheadedG607 in the prisonG5438. 11And his headG2776 was broughtG5342 on a platterG4094 and givenG1325 to the girlG2877, and she broughtG5342 it to her motherG3384. 12His disciplesG3101 cameG4334 and tookG142 awayG142 the bodyG4430 and buriedG2290 16it; and they wentG2064 and reportedG518 to JesusG2424.
