1 Timothy 5
Darby Bible
1Rebuke not an elderG4245 sharply, but exhortG3870 [him] as a fatherG3962, younger [men] as brethren, 2elderG4245 women as mothersG3384, younger women as sistersG79, with all purityG47. 3Honour widowsG5503 who are really widowsG5503; 4but if any widowG5503 have childrenG5043 or descendants, let them learnG3129 first to beG1510 pious as regards their ownG2398 houseG3624, and to renderG591 a return on their side to [their] parents; for this isG1510 acceptable in the sight of 1GodG2316. 5NowG1161 she who [is] a widowG5503 indeed, and is left alone, has put [her] hopeG1679 in 2GodG2316, and continuesG4357 in supplications and prayersG4335 nightG3571 and dayG2250. 6But she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead [while] livingG2198. 7And these thingsG3778 enjoin, that they may beG1510 irreproachable. 8But if any oneG5100 does not provide for his ownG2398, and specially for those of [his] house, he has deniedG720 the faithG4102, and isG1510 worse than the unbelieverG571. 9Let a widowG5503 be put upon the list, being of not less than sixtyG1835 yearsG2094, [having been] wifeG1135 of oneG1520 manG435, 10borne witnessG3140 to in goodG18 worksG2041, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washedG3538 saints' feetG4228, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every goodG18 workG2041. 11But younger widowsG5503 decline; for whenG3752 they grow wanton against ChristG5547, they desireG2309 to marryG1060, 12being guilty, because they have cast off their firstG4413 faithG4102. 13And, at the sameG260 timeG260, they learnG3129 alsoG2532 [to be] idleG692, going about to people's housesG3614; and not onlyG3440 idleG692, but alsoG2532 gossipers and meddlers, speakingG2980 things not becoming. 14I will thereforeG3767 that the younger marryG1060, bear children, rule the house, giveG1325 no occasionG874 to the adversary in respect of reproach. 15For alreadyG2235 some have turnedG1624 asideG1624 after SatanG4567. 16If any believing man or woman have widowsG5503, let them impart relief to them, and let not the assemblyG1577 be charged, that it may impart relief to those [that are] widowsG5503 indeed. 17Let the eldersG4245 who take the lead [among the saints] wellG2573 be esteemed worthyG515 of doubleG1362 honour, specially those labouring in wordG3056 and teachingG1319; 18for the scriptureG1124 saysG3004, Thou shalt not muzzleG5392 an oxG1016 that treadeth out corn, and, The workmanG2040 [is] worthyG514 of his hire. 19Against an elderG4245 receiveG3858 not an accusationG2724 unless where there are twoG1417 or threeG5140 witnessesG3144. 20Those that sinG264 convictG1651 before all, that the restG3062 alsoG2532 may have fearG5401. 21I testifyG1263 before 3GodG2316 and ChristG5547 JesusG2424 and the electG1588 angelsG32, that thou keepG5442 these thingsG3778 without prejudice, doing nothingG3367 by favour. 22Lay handsG5495 quickly on no man, nor partake in others' sinsG266. KeepG5083 thyself pureG53. 23Drink noG3371 longerG3371 only water, but useG5530 a littleG3641 wineG3631 on accountG1223 of thy stomach and thy frequent illnesses. 24Of some menG444 the sinsG266 areG1510 manifest beforehand, goingG4254 before to judgmentG2920, and some alsoG2532 they follow after. 25In like manner goodG2570 worksG2041 alsoG2532 are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidG2928.
