1 Kings 18
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass after manyH7227 daysH3117, that the wordH1697 of Jehovah came to ElijahH452 in the thirdH7992 yearH8141, sayingH559, Go, shew thyself to AhabH256; and I will send rainH4306 upon the faceH6440 of the earthH127. 2And ElijahH452 went to shew himself to AhabH256. And the famineH7458 was severeH2389 in SamariaH8111. 3And AhabH256 calledH7121 ObadiahH5662, who wasH1961 the steward of his houseH1004 (now ObadiahH5662 feared Jehovah greatly; 4and it wasH1961 so, when JezebelH348 cutH3772 off the prophetsH5030 of Jehovah, that ObadiahH5662 tookH3947 a hundredH3967 prophetsH5030, and hidH2244 them by fiftyH2572 in a caveH4631, and maintained them with breadH3899 and waterH4325); 5and AhabH256 saidH559 to ObadiahH5662, Go through the landH776, to all the fountains of waterH4325 and to all the torrents, perhapsH194 we may findH4672 grassH2682 to save the horsesH5483 and the mulesH6505 aliveH2421, so that we may not have to destroy some of [our] beasts. 6And they dividedH2505 the landH776 between them to passH5674 through it: AhabH256 wentH1980 oneH259 wayH1870 by himself, and ObadiahH5662 wentH1980 another wayH1870 by himself. 7And as ObadiahH5662 wasH1961 on the wayH1870, behold, ElijahH452 met him; and he knew him, and fellH5307 on his faceH6440, and saidH559, Is it indeed thou, my lordH113 ElijahH452? 8And he saidH559 to him, I [am he]: go, sayH559 to thy lordH113, Behold ElijahH452! 9And he saidH559, What have I sinnedH2398, that thou givest thy servantH5650 into the handH3027 of AhabH256, to putH5414 me to deathH4191? 10As Jehovah thy 1GodH430 liveth, there is no nationH1471 or kingdomH4467 whither my lord has not sentH7971 to seekH1245 thee; and when they saidH559, He is not [here], he took an oathH7650 of the kingdomH4467 or nationH1471 that they foundH4672 thee not. 11And nowH6258 thou sayest, Go, sayH559 to thy lordH113, Behold ElijahH452! 12And it shall comeH935 to pass when I am goneH935 from thee, that the SpiritH7307 of Jehovah shall carryH5375 thee whither I knowH3045 not; and when I comeH935 and tellH5046 AhabH256, and he cannot findH4672 thee, he will killH2026 me; and I thy servantH5650 fearH3372 Jehovah from my youthH5271. 13Was it not toldH5046 my lord what I did whenH834 JezebelH348 slewH2026 the prophetsH5030 of Jehovah, how I hidH2244 a hundredH3967 menH376 of Jehovah's prophetsH5030 by fiftyH2572 in a caveH4631, and maintained them with breadH3899 and waterH4325? 14And nowH6258 thou sayest, Go, sayH559 to thy lordH113, Behold ElijahH452! and he will killH2026 me. 15And ElijahH452 saidH559, As Jehovah of hostsH6635 liveth, before whom I standH5975, I will certainly shew myself to him to-day. 16Then ObadiahH5662 went to meet AhabH256, and toldH5046 him. And AhabH256 went to meet ElijahH452. 17And it came to pass when AhabH256 sawH7200 ElijahH452, that AhabH256 saidH559 to him, Is it thou, the troubler of IsraelH3478? 18And he saidH559, I have not troubledH5916 IsraelH3478, but thou and thy father's houseH1004, in that ye have forsaken the commandmentsH4687 of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the BaalsH1168. 19And nowH6258 sendH7971, gatherH6908 to me all IsraelH3478 to mount CarmelH3760, and the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168 fourH702 hundredH3967 and fiftyH2572, and the prophetsH5030 of the AsherahH842 fourH702 hundredH3967, who eatH398 at Jezebel's tableH7979. 20So AhabH256 sentH7971 to all the children of IsraelH3478, and gatheredH6908 the prophetsH5030 togetherH6908 unto mount CarmelH3760. 21Then ElijahH452 drewH5066 near to all the peopleH5971, and saidH559, How long do ye halt between twoH8147 opinions? if Jehovah be 2GodH430, follow him; and if BaalH1168, follow him. And the peopleH5971 answered him not a wordH1697. 22And ElijahH452 saidH559 to the peopleH5971, I, onlyH905 I, remainH3498 a prophetH5030 of Jehovah; and Baal's prophetsH5030 are fourH702 hundredH3967 and fiftyH2572 menH376. 23Let them therefore giveH5414 us twoH8147 bullocks: and let them chooseH977 oneH259 bullock for themselves, and cutH5408 it in pieces, and putH5414 it on the woodH6086, and putH5414 no fireH784; and I will sacrifice the other bullock, and putH5414 it on the woodH6086, and putH5414 no fireH784. 24And callH7121 ye on the nameH8034 of your 3godsH430, and I will callH7121 on the nameH8034 of Jehovah; and the 4godH430 that answers by fireH784, let him beH1961 5GodH430. And all the peopleH5971 answered and saidH559, The wordH1697 is goodH2896. 25And ElijahH452 saidH559 to the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168, ChooseH977 oneH259 bullock for yourselves, and sacrifice it firstH7223; for ye are the manyH7227; and callH7121 on the nameH8034 of your 6godH430, but putH7760 no fireH784. 26And they tookH3947 the bullock which had been givenH5414 them, and sacrificed it, and calledH7121 on the nameH8034 of BaalH1168 from morningH1242 until noonH6672, sayingH559, O BaalH1168, answerH6030 us! But there was no voiceH6963, and none answered. And they leaped about the altarH4196 that had been madeH6213. 27And it came to pass at noonH6672 that ElijahH452 mocked them and saidH559, Cry aloud; for he is a 7godH430; for he is meditating, or gone aside, or he is on a journeyH1870; perhapsH194 he sleeps, and will awake. 28And they cried aloud, and cutH1413 themselves after their manner with swordsH2719 and spearsH7420, till the bloodH1818 gushed out upon them. 29And it came to passH5674 when midday was past, that they prophesiedH5012 until the [time] of the offeringH4503 up of the oblation; but there was neither voiceH6963, nor any that answeredH6030, nor any attentionH7182. 30Then ElijahH452 saidH559 to all the peopleH5971, DrawH5066 near to me. And all the peopleH5971 drewH5066 near to him. And he repairedH7495 the altarH4196 of Jehovah which was brokenH2040 downH2040. 31And ElijahH452 tookH3947 twelve stonesH68, according to the numberH4557 of the tribesH7626 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, to whom the wordH1697 of Jehovah came sayingH559, IsraelH3478 shall beH1961 thy nameH8034; 32and with the stonesH68 he builtH1129 an altarH4196 in the nameH8034 of Jehovah, and madeH6213 a trench roundH5439 about the altarH4196, of the capacity of two measures of seedH2233; 33and he putH7760 the woodH6086 in order, and cutH5408 the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the woodH6086. And he said, Fill four pitchers with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the woodH6086. 34And he saidH559, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he saidH559, Do it the thirdH8027 time. And they did it the thirdH8027 time. 35And the waterH4325 ran roundH5439 about the altarH4196; and he filledH4390 the trench alsoH1571 with waterH4325. 36And it came to pass at [the time of] the offeringH4503 up of the oblation, that ElijahH452 the prophetH5030 drewH5066 near, and saidH559, Jehovah, 8GodH430 of AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327 and IsraelH3478, let it beH1961 knownH3045 this dayH3117 that thou art 9GodH430 in IsraelH3478, and that I am thy servantH5650, and that I have done all these thingsH1697 by thy wordH1697. 37AnswerH6030 me, Jehovah, answerH6030 me, that this peopleH5971 may knowH3045 that thou Jehovah art 10GodH430, and [that] thou hast turnedH5437 their heartH3820 back again. 38And the fireH784 of Jehovah fellH5307, and consumedH398 the burnt-offering, and the woodH6086, and the stonesH68, and the dustH6083, and lickedH3897 up the waterH4325 that was in the trench. 39And all the peopleH5971 sawH7200 [it], and they fellH5307 on their facesH6440 and saidH559, Jehovah, he is 11GodH430! Jehovah, he is 12GodH430! 40And ElijahH452 saidH559 to them, SeizeH8610 the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168; let not oneH376 of them escapeH4422! And they seizedH8610 them; and ElijahH452 broughtH3381 them downH3381 to the torrent of KishonH7028, and slaughteredH7819 them there. 41And ElijahH452 saidH559 to AhabH256, GoH5927 up, eatH398 and drinkH8354; for there is a soundH6963 of abundanceH1995 of rainH1653. 42And AhabH256 wentH5927 up to eatH398 and to drinkH8354. And ElijahH452 wentH5927 up to the topH7218 of CarmelH3760; and he bowed down on the earthH776, and putH7760 his faceH6440 between his knees. 43And he saidH559 to his servantH5288, GoH5927 up now, lookH5027 toward the seaH3220. And he wentH5927 up and lookedH5027, and saidH559, [There is] nothingH369. And he saidH559, GoH5927 again sevenH7651 timesH6471. 44And it came to pass at the seventhH7637 time that he saidH559, Behold there is a cloudH5645, smallH6996 as a man's handH3709, arising out of the seaH3220. And he saidH559, GoH5927 up, sayH559 to AhabH256, HarnessH631 and goH5927 down, that the pour of rainH1653 stop thee not. 45And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heavensH8064 becameH1961 black [with] cloudsH5645 and windH7307, and there wasH1961 a greatH1419 pour of rainH1653. And AhabH256 got on the chariot, and went to Jizreel. 46And the handH3027 of Jehovah wasH1961 upon ElijahH452; and he girded up his loinsH4975, and ranH7323 before AhabH256 to the entrance of Jizreel.
