1 Kings 18
American Standard Version
1And it came to pass after manyH7227 daysH3117, that the wordH1697 of Jehovah came to ElijahH452, in the thirdH7992 yearH8141, sayingH559, Go, showH7200 thyself unto AhabH256; and I will send rainH4306 upon the earthH127. 2And ElijahH452 went to showH7200 himself unto AhabH256. And the famineH7458 was sore in SamariaH8111. 3And AhabH256 calledH7121 ObadiahH5662, who wasH1961 over the householdH1004. (Now ObadiahH5662 feared Jehovah greatly: 4for it wasH1961 so, when JezebelH348 cutH3772 off the prophetsH5030 of Jehovah, that ObadiahH5662 tookH3947 a hundredH3967 prophetsH5030, and hidH2244 them by fiftyH2572 in a caveH4631, and fed them with breadH3899 and waterH4325.) 5And AhabH256 saidH559 unto ObadiahH5662, Go through the landH776, unto all the fountains of waterH4325, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may findH4672 grassH2682 and save the horsesH5483 and mulesH6505 aliveH2421, that we lose not all the beasts. 6So they dividedH2505 the landH776 between them to passH5674 throughout it: AhabH256 wentH1980 oneH259 wayH1870 by himself, and ObadiahH5662 wentH1980 another wayH1870 by himself.
7And as ObadiahH5662 wasH1961 in the wayH1870, behold, ElijahH452 met him: and he knew him, and fellH5307 on his faceH6440, and saidH559, Is it thou, my lordH113 ElijahH452? 8And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lordH113, Behold, ElijahH452 is hereH2009. 9And he saidH559, Wherein have I sinnedH2398, that thou wouldest deliver thy servantH5650 into the handH3027 of AhabH256, to slay me? 10As Jehovah thy GodH430 liveth, there is no nationH1471 or kingdomH4467, whither my lord hath not sentH7971 to seekH1245 thee: and when they saidH559, He is not here, he took an oathH7650 of the kingdomH4467 and nationH1471, that they foundH4672 thee not. 11And nowH6258 thou sayest, Go, tell thy lordH113, Behold, ElijahH452 is hereH2009. 12And it will comeH935 to pass, as soon as I am goneH935 from thee, that the SpiritH7307 of Jehovah will carryH5375 thee whither I knowH3045 not; and so when I comeH935 and tellH5046 AhabH256, and he cannot findH4672 thee, he will slayH2026 me: but I thy servantH5650 fearH3372 Jehovah from my youthH5271. 13Was it not toldH5046 my lord what I did whenH834 JezebelH348 slewH2026 the prophetsH5030 of Jehovah, how I hidH2244 a hundredH3967 menH376 of Jehovah’s prophetsH5030 by fiftyH2572 in a caveH4631, and fed them with breadH3899 and waterH4325? 14And nowH6258 thou sayest, Go, tell thy lordH113, Behold, ElijahH452 is hereH2009; and he will slayH2026 me. 15And ElijahH452 saidH559, As Jehovah of hostsH6635 liveth, before whom I standH5975, I will surely showH7200 myself unto him to-day.
16So ObadiahH5662 went to meet AhabH256, and toldH5046 him; and AhabH256 went to meet ElijahH452. 17And it came to pass, when AhabH256 sawH7200 ElijahH452, that AhabH256 saidH559 unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of IsraelH3478? 18And he answered, I have not troubledH5916 IsraelH3478; but thou, and thy father’sH1 houseH1004, in that ye have forsaken the commandmentsH4687 of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim. 19NowH6258 thereforeH6258 sendH7971, and gatherH6908 to me all IsraelH3478 unto mount CarmelH3760, and the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168 fourH702 hundredH3967 and fiftyH2572, and the prophetsH5030 of the AsherahH842 fourH702 hundredH3967, that eatH398 at Jezebel’s tableH7979.
20So AhabH256 sentH7971 unto all the children of IsraelH3478, and gatheredH6908 the prophetsH5030 togetherH6908 unto mount CarmelH3760. 21And ElijahH452 came near unto all the peopleH5971, and saidH559, How long go ye limping between the twoH8147 sides? if Jehovah be GodH430, follow him; but if BaalH1168, then follow him. And the peopleH5971 answered him not a wordH1697. 22Then saidH559 ElijahH452 unto the peopleH5971, I, even I onlyH905, am leftH3498 a prophetH5030 of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophetsH5030 are fourH702 hundredH3967 and fiftyH2572 menH376. 23Let them therefore giveH5414 us twoH8147 bullocks; and let them chooseH977 oneH259 bullock for themselves, and cutH5408 it in pieces, and lay it on the woodH6086, and putH5414 no fireH784 under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the woodH6086, and putH5414 no fireH784 under. 24And callH7121 ye on the nameH8034 of your godH430, and I will callH7121 on the nameH8034 of Jehovah; and the GodH430 that answereth by fireH784, let him beH1961 GodH430. And all the peopleH5971 answered and saidH559, It is well spoken.
25And ElijahH452 saidH559 unto the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168, ChooseH977 you oneH259 bullock for yourselves, and dress it firstH7223; for ye are manyH7227; and callH7121 on the nameH8034 of your godH430, but putH7760 no fireH784 under. 26And they tookH3947 the bullock which was givenH5414 them, and they dressed it, and calledH7121 on the nameH8034 of BaalH1168 from morningH1242 even until noonH6672, sayingH559, O BaalH1168, hear us. But there was no voiceH6963, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altarH4196 which was madeH6213. 27And it came to pass at noonH6672, that ElijahH452 mocked them, and saidH559, Cry aloud; for he is a godH430: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journeyH1870, or peradventure he sleepeth and must beH1961 awaked. 28And they cried aloud, and cutH1413 themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the bloodH1818 gushed out upon them. 29And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesiedH5012 until the time of the offeringH4503 of the evening oblation; but there was neither voiceH6963, nor any to answerH6030, nor any that regarded.
30And ElijahH452 saidH559 unto all the peopleH5971, Come near unto me; and all the peopleH5971 came near unto him. And he repairedH7495 the altarH4196 of Jehovah that was thrown downH2040. 31And ElijahH452 tookH3947 twelve stonesH68, according to the numberH4557 of the tribesH7626 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, unto whom the wordH1697 of Jehovah came, sayingH559, IsraelH3478 shall beH1961 thy nameH8034. 32And with the stonesH68 he builtH1129 an altarH4196 in the nameH8034 of Jehovah; and he madeH6213 a trench about the altarH4196, as great as would contain two measures of seedH2233. 33And he putH7760 the woodH6086 in order, and cutH5408 the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the woodH6086. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the woodH6086. 34And he saidH559, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he saidH559, Do it the thirdH8027 time; and they did it the thirdH8027 time. 35And the waterH4325 ran roundH5439 about the altarH4196; and he filledH4390 the trench alsoH1571 with waterH4325. 36And it came to pass at the time of the offeringH4503 of the evening oblation, that ElijahH452 the prophetH5030 came near, and saidH559, O Jehovah, the GodH430 of AbrahamH85, of IsaacH3327, and of IsraelH3478, let it beH1961 knownH3045 this dayH3117 that thou art GodH430 in IsraelH3478, and that I am thy servantH5650, and that I have done all these thingsH1697 at thy wordH1697. 37Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this peopleH5971 may knowH3045 that thou, Jehovah, art GodH430, and that thou hast turnedH5437 their heartH3820 back again. 38Then the fireH784 of Jehovah fellH5307, and consumedH398 the burnt-offering, and the woodH6086, and the stonesH68, and the dustH6083, and lickedH3897 up the waterH4325 that was in the trench. 39And when all the peopleH5971 sawH7200 it, they fellH5307 on their facesH6440: and they saidH559, Jehovah, he is GodH430; Jehovah, he is GodH430. 40And ElijahH452 saidH559 unto them, Take the prophetsH5030 of BaalH1168; let not oneH376 of them escapeH4422. And they took them; and ElijahH452 broughtH3381 them downH3381 to the brook KishonH7028, and slew them there.
41And ElijahH452 saidH559 unto AhabH256, Get thee up, eatH398 and drinkH8354; for there is the soundH6963 of abundanceH1995 of rainH1653. 42So AhabH256 wentH5927 up to eatH398 and to drinkH8354. And ElijahH452 wentH5927 up to the topH7218 of CarmelH3760; and he bowed himself down upon the earthH776, and putH7760 his faceH6440 between his knees. 43And he saidH559 to his servantH5288, GoH5927 up now, lookH5027 toward the seaH3220. And he wentH5927 up, and lookedH5027, and saidH559, There is nothingH369. And he saidH559, GoH5927 again sevenH7651 timesH6471. 44And it came to pass at the seventhH7637 time, that he saidH559, Behold, there ariseth a cloudH5645 out of the seaH3220, as smallH6996 as a man’sH376 handH3709. And he saidH559, GoH5927 up, sayH559 unto AhabH256, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee downH3381, that the rainH1653 stop thee not. 45And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavensH8064 grew black with cloudsH5645 and windH7307, and there wasH1961 a greatH1419 rainH1653. And AhabH256 rodeH7392, and went to JezreelH3157: 46and the handH3027 of Jehovah wasH1961 on ElijahH452; and he girded up his loinsH4975, and ranH7323 before AhabH256 to the entrance of JezreelH3157.
